Festival voor nieuwe muziek | New music festivaltransitAs it does every year, Transit stands for adventure and discovery, for believing in the creative impulses of today, for new works by established names and for young talent hoping to be established themselves one day. The programme o!ers a mix of generations, ensembles and aesthetic perspectives that brings together the wonderful diversity of the newest new music in a single weekend. Come hear the phenomenal sound of the retuned string instruments of Tim Mariën, the bravado of Jennifer Walshe, Claude Ledoux and his LAPS ensemble’s hybrid dialogue with laptops, Peter Ablinger’s inner rocker unchained, the theatrical madness of Alexander Khubeev and Alexander Schubert. While there’s no lack of daring choices here, there is also a place for the solid craftsmanship and ambitious concentration of Pierluigi Billone, Frédéric D’Haene, Vykintas Baltakas, Frederik Neyrinck or Mark André. With Georges Aperghis and Helmut Lachenmann, we have two familiar figureheads on the programme, who may be 75 and 80 respectively, but bring brand-new music that has the same degree of inventiveness as the pieces by the young striplings. World premieres, Belgian premieres, ensembles and composers making their Transit debuts: Transit o!ers a look at music as it is now: international, diverse, daring and imaginative.

Transit staat ook dit jaar voor avontuur en ontdekking, voor geloof in de creatieve impulsen van vandaag, voor nieuw werk van gevestigde waarden en voor jonge talenten die hopelijk ooit gevestigde waarden zullen blijken te zijn. Het programma biedt een mix van generaties, ensembles en esthetische invalshoeken die de heerlijke verscheidenheid van de nieuwste muziek in één weekend samenbrengt. Zoals de fenomenale sound van de herstemde snaarinstrumenten van Tim Mariën, de branie van Jennifer Walshe, de hybride dialoog met laptops van Claude Ledoux en zijn laps ensemble, de ontketende rock-kant van Peter Ablinger, de theatrale waanzin van Alexander Khubeev en Alexander Schubert. Aan gedurfde keuzes is er dus geen gebrek, maar er is even goed plaats voor het doorwrochte vakmanschap en de ambitieuze concentratie van Pierluigi Billone, Frédéric D’Haene, Vykintas Baltakas, Frederik Neyrinck of Mark André. Met Georges Aperghis en Helmut Lachenmann staan er dit jaar ook twee vertrouwde boegbeelden op het programma, respectievelijk 75 en 80 jaar oud, maar met gloednieuwe muziek die qua inventiviteit voor geen enkele jonge snaak moet onderdoen. Wereldpremières, Belgische creaties, Transit-debuten van ensembles en componisten: Transit biedt een blik op de muziek zoals die nu is: internationaal, divers, gedurfd en fantasierijk.

What would a Transit opening concert be without a few stark contrasts? The Talea Ensemble from New York will give this programme a trans-Atlantic charac-ter, presenting composers from several generations and from both sides of the ocean. We are eagerly looking forward to the world premiere by contemporary European figurehead Georges Aperghis (who is celebrating his 75th birthday this year). He wrote Wild Romance for the combined talents of Talea and his favou-rite soprano Donatienne Michel-Dansac. The Americans will bring something from home, by Anthony Cheung (also the ensemble’s pianist), while Luc Bre-waeys will give the programme a Fle-mish accent. Pièce de résistance is the phenomenal percussion concerto !"#$.Wall by Pierluigi Billone, one of new music’s rising stars, who will have his Transit debut as well.

After making his Transit debut in the opening concert, the Italian composer Pierluigi Billone will be the central feature at this lecture-recital. Percussionist Tom De Cock is working on a Doctor of Arts degree centred around Billone’s solo percussion works. Here, in conversation with musicologist Klaas Coulembier, he will discuss this music and he will let us hear how Billone makes great music, even from automobile shock absorbers. Musical refinement meets the scrap heap in Mani.De Leonardis.

Frédéric D’Haene and Vykintas Baltakas have long been familiar favourites with Transit audiences. D’Haene had written Fluxus-Static-Friction for het Collectief two years ago, but until now, the work had not been performed in Belgium. This shortcoming had to be remedied, and Transit is happy to take on the task, because this is a sizzling, fascinating work. A world premiere by Baltic ‘Leuvenaar’ Vykintas Baltakas, whose Recitativo was recently the required piece for semi-finalists in Belgium’s Queen Elisabeth Competition, occupies the second half of the programme.

Na het openingsconcert staat de Italiaanse componist Pierluigi Billone ook centraal op het Lecture + Recital. Percussionist Tom De Cock maakt een doctoraat in de kunsten waarin de solo percussiewerken van Billone een hoofdrol spelen. In gesprek met musicoloog Klaas Coulembier, onthult Tom De Cock de geheimen van de partituur en laat hij horen hoe Billone zelfs uit schokdempers van auto’s geweldige muziek haalt. Muzikaal raDnement ontmoet autokerkhof in Mani.De Leonardis.

Voor het Transit-publiek zijn Frédéric D’Haene en Vykintas Baltakas al lang geen onbekenden meer. Twee jaar geleden schreef D’Haene Fluxus-Static-Friction voor het Collectief, maar tot nu toe werd het nog nooit uitgevoerd in België. Een euvel dat Transit met veel plezier verhelpt, want het is een zinderend, fascinerend werk. Baltische Leuvenaar Vykintas Baltakas vult de tweede helE van het programma. Zijn Recitativo was pas nog verplichte kost voor de halve Fnalisten van de Elisabethwedstrijd. Zijn nieuwste werk krijgt de wereldcreatie op Transit.

Composing today

Several of the composers present will slide over on the sofa in the STUKcafé. They will discuss the duty and challenges of a contemporary composer.

The “deconstruction of a rock concert” is how Peter Ablinger describes his Black Series, written for clarinettist Gareth Davis and the Dutch rock trio The Julie Mittens. The influential music magazine The Wire called it “this year’s most intriguing and successful genre-crossing collaboration”. Contemporary avant-garde that intelligently and in its very own way goes to work with clarinet, guitar, bass and drums. Turn up the amps all the way, and let’s rock ‘n roll!

Wat zou nieuwe muziek zijn zonder een gezonde dosis Unheimlichkeit? In dit concert staat technologie centraal, de spanning tussen mens en machine, het no man’s land waar ons leven wordt aangevuld - of is het overgenomen? - door onpersoonlijke apparaten. Vier jonge componisten tonen hun visie op die thematiek. Alexander Schubert en Alexander Khubeev ondermijnen de normale rol van de dirigent en kiezen zo voor een theatrale aanpak. Gebeurde dat bij Schubert nog vrolijk, dan loert bij Khubeev de dystopie om de hoek. Simon Steen-Andersen zweert in %&'( bij obsessieve herhalingen en Jennifer Walshe zorgt voor een wereldcreatie. Dit concert is een spannend snijpunt van uitdagende ideeën, visuele elementen en gedurfde muzikale keuzes en is dus op het lijf geschreven van het Nadar ensemble.

It wouldn’t be new music without a good measure of alienation and Unheimlichkeit. This concert is all about technology, the tension between man and machine, the ‘no man’s land’ where our lives are complemented – or is it taken over? – by impersonal devices. Alexander Schubert and Alexander Khubeev will direct their energies to undermining the usual role of the conductor. This may be a cheerful task with Schubert, but with Khubeev dystopia is lurking around the corner. The obsessive repetitions in Simon Steen-Andersen’s !"#$ and a world premiere by Jennifer Walshe complete this cross-section of the condition humaine as seen by four young composers in 2015. This exciting intersection of challenging ideas, visual and dramatic elements and daring musical choices is perfectly suited for the Nadar ensemble.

Three years ago, Guy De Bièvre wrote a work for guitar ensemble for the MATRIX youth project. Because this score contains so much more than just plucking strings, we are presenting it again this year with a diverse and large ensemble, in which the percussion has a thing or two to say as well.

Tim Mariën’s sound world is unique in Flanders and far outside its borders as well. They must have realised this as well in Darmstadt, where he was awarded a Stipendienpreis or stipend award in 2010. In this portrait concert, the young Flemish ensemble Tiptoe Company will play his most important recent works and will add a world premiere. Using microtonal string instruments, re-tuned pianos and alternative playing techniques, Mariën balances between delicacy and exuberance, poetry and e!ervescence. Di!erent in tone, but equally inventive is the music of the young Dutch composer Nicoline Soeter. A world première of hers will round out the programme nicely.

Drie jaar geleden schreef Guy De Bièvre voor het matrix-jongerenproject een werk voor gitaarensemble. Omdat er zoveel meer in deze partituur zit dan getokkel alleen, hernemen we het dit jaar in een bonte en grote bezetting, waarin ook percussie een aardig woordje zal meespreken.


De klankwereld van Tim Mariën is uniek in Vlaanderen en ver daarbuiten. Dat moeten ze ook beseE hebben in Darmstadt, waar hij in 2010 een Stipendienpreis kreeg. In dit portretconcert verzamelt het jonge Vlaamse Tiptoe ensemble zijn belangrijkste recente werken en voegt daar nog de creatie van een gloednieuw werk aan toe. Met microtonale snaarinstrumenten, herstemde piano’s en alternatieve speeltechnieken balanceert Mariën tussen delicaat en exuberant, poëtisch en wervelend. Anders van toonspraak, maar even inventief is de muziek van de jonge Nederlandse componiste Nicoline Soeter. Ook van haar staat een wereldcreatie op het programma.

Five musicians and two laptops: the LAPS ensemble’s sound is that of a modern, electronic world. The Walloon ensemble, founded by composer and conductor Claude Ledoux, will present music by a selection of young compo-sers. They all share a fascination with the digital sound world and interactive applications in which the laptops can, as they see fit, transform and expand the sounds of the instruments and even of each other. Vijf muzikanten en twee laptops: het laps ensemble kiest resoluut voor de klank van een moderne, elektronische wereld. Het Waalse ensemble rond componist en dirigent Claude Ledoux brengt in dit programma jonge componisten bij elkaar. Zij delen een fascinatie voor de digitale klankwereld en interactieve toepassingen waarbij de laptops de klank van de instrumenten en zelfs elkaar naar believen kunnen beïnvloeden, transformeren en uitbreiden. laps ensemble neemt je mee op een trip naar de uithoeken van een vreemd akoestisch-digitaal universum.

This year’s Transit festival ends in a certain sense the way it began: with a meeting of di!erent generations of composers. Helmut Lachenmann is also celebrating an important birthday (he will be 80 this year), but even if he weren’t, this giant of new music has earned a place on the Transit programme. In the experienced hands of pianist Yukiko Sugawara and the American soprano Elisabeth Keusch, Lachenmann’s breathtakingly beautiful song cycle Got Lost is the perfect proof that the most exciting new music is not necessarily produced by a new generation of composers. With two impressive piano works, Mark André and Frederik Neyrinck (world premiere!) will provide a musical riposte to the great German master. This will be an intimate closing concert, throwing all the expressive facets of voice and piano into the ring.

Transit 2015 eindigt in zekere zin zoals het begonnen is: met een ontmoeting tussen verschillende generaties componisten. Ook Helmut Lachenmann viert een belangrijke verjaardag (hij wordt dit jaar 80), maar zelfs zonder die aanleiding verdient deze reus van de nieuwe muziek zijn plaats in het programma van Transit. In de ervaren handen van pianiste Yukiko Sugawara en de Amerikaanse sopraan Elisabeth Keusch is Lachenmanns adembenemende liedcyclus Got Lost het perfecte bewijs dat de meest opwindende muziek van nu niet enkel een zaak hoeE te zijn van een jonge generatie componisten. Met twee imposante pianowerken bieden Mark André en Frederik Neyrinck (wereldcreatie!) de Duitse grootmeester fraai muzikaal weerwerk. Een intimistisch slotconcert waarin alle expressieve facetten van stem en piano in de strijd worden geworpen.
