Today we bid farewell to our exchange student Allis. Here are her parting words as she presented a

slide show of her year in review to the Club ….

When I step on the plane that will take me back to Sweden I will have spent 360 days here in

Australia as a Rotary exchange student. That is more or less the longest one can stay in a

country as an exchange student.

When I was about 8 years old we had two exchange students from Australia and New Zealand

stay with my family in Sweden. That was my first real encounter with Rotary youth exchange

and I have loved every exchange student that have lived with my family ever since.

When I was around 12 years old we had a boy from Gold Coast and a girl from Dubbo stay

with us and from that moment on I have been wanting to go to Australia on exchange.

Standing here today, on the final week of my exchange that I have been wanting to do for

about six years, if not more, feels a bit unreal.

The moment I stepped of the plane here in Melbourne I was handed an Essendon footy scarf

and welcomed as one in the family. Quite frankly I had no idea what was going on and Aussie

rules football was something I had never heard of.

School The first day of school was very exciting even though, as you might have seen in that weeks

Contact, that I wasn’t really fond of my school uniform.

School here is quite different from how it is in Sweden and since I didn’t know my way

around Aitken College I was a bit nervous. But all the teachers and all of the students were

very welcoming and helpful so it didn’t take long until I felt like a part of the school.

The first major event with the school was the presentation ball held at the end of August.

Since I got to Aitken in the middle of the school year I had to have extra dance lessons to catch

up with the other students. It was a very different and new experience, both for me and my

dance partner.

During my time at Aitken I have been in various school performances, two of them I was

singing with some of my friends but the biggest one I did was when my theatre studies class

did a quirky version of Alice of Wonderland. No, I was not Alice.

I have done different subject here then what I can do back at home and that have given me a

broader perspective on how the Australian society works and how different school here is

compared to Sweden.

Rotary Camps

I have been to two camps with Rotary one was the introduction camp at Camp Getaway,

outside of Bendigo, and one was Rotex camp in Anglesea and that was with the outbounds as

well.

The first one I got to meet all the other exchange students that I would later go on safari

with. The other camp was more relaxed and it was a chance for us inbounds to meet the

outbounds that were going to our respective countries.

Vic Travels I have had the chance to travel a lot during this year. My first trip was to Ballarat Wildlife park

with the Bakers, this was only a few days into my exchange and I got to cuddle koalas! My

second trip was with my first host mum Barbara and that time we went to Echuca and the

paddle steamers and it was also the first time I entered another state.

Barbara also took me to Warmambool and over to the blue lake in South Australia, my

second state outside of Victoria!

Steve and Kerry, who also was my second host family, took me and a friend to Halls Gap

where we went hiking for a few days. We saw a lot of cockatoo and we were even hand-

feeding them.

The last trip I did was last week with my last host family Neil and Mary, this time we went

to Metung and Lakes Entrance. So I can truly say that I have seen a lot of the state.

Interstate

I have also done a lot of travelling outside Victoria. I got to see the Gold Coast and the

Sunshine Coast quite early in my year and later on I got to see Adelaide, so now I don’t have

to go there again. Sydney has been my second favourite big city, after Melbourne of course,

and I have got the chance to go there three times during the past year.

Friends I have gotten a lot of aussie mates who have made my exchange to what it is. I know for sure

that I have made friends for a life time both amongst Australians and other exchange students.

My friends have performed with me, had many fun moments in class, showed me the city and

together we have created many memories.

Rotary

I have learnt a lot about rotary during this year. I have learnt how much Rotary do for other

people around the world and locally, not just youth exchange.

At the district conference, that was held on the gold coast, I got the chance to see how Rotary

works and all of the good things the district do for the community and people in need. It was a

chance for us exchange students to catch up as well.

Another trip I did with rotary was to the World Convention in Sydney which was amazing. It

was amazing to see so many Rotarians and also exchange students that were attending the

conference and that we all were given the chance to listen to all the fantastic speakers and

attend a lot of break-out sessions. It was a great opportunity for me as an exchange student to

catch up with other exchange students and also listen to former students about their

experiences.

Safari My big trip around Australia was an amazing experience that I shared with 26 girls and 9 boys.

It was a way of really getting to understand how big this country really is and how much of

nothing there is in the outback...

Our longest day on the bus was when we drove from Adelaide to Cobra Pedy, it took us

around 13 hours and it wasn’t much to see on the way... Our first long stop was at Uluru where

we stayed for two nights, it was pretty warm during the day but the nights got cold. It would

have been alright but someone forgot to pack sleeping-madrases for everyone so most of us

were sleeping strait on the tent floor. Not very nice...

On the next day we walked through the Olgars (Kata Tjuta), when we went to our next stop

the next day we stopped at Kings Canyon and went on a three our hike there as well.

The night we were sleeping under the stars, at Barkley Homestead, I had a close encounter

with a scorpion. It decided to crawl out of my sleeping bag as I was getting into it.

My all time favourite place was Great Keppel Island, we had three days to do more or less

what we wanted on this amazing island and I can say that we didn’t do much else then lying

on the beach. It was a great break from the bus and the perfect place to stay before we made

our way down to Sydney and then back to Melbourne again.

Thanks

When you stand on the airport in your home country one year feels like the longest time

possible. It’s a bit scary, you’re nervous but excited, this is the year when you grow up a bit,

when you learn how to take care of yourself and places you’ve never been to and people

you’ve never met will become your home and family.

I would like to thank both Rotary International and the Rotary club of Essendon that have

made my amazing exchange possible. It has been a lot of ups and downs but now that I look

back at my twelve months here in Australia that I have had the best time of my life and that I

have memories that I will have with me forever. Thank you.

From President Lisa …

I have just received confirmation that Cathy Nicou has been accepted as a Police Mentor in the 2014-

15 Victoria Police Leaders Mentoring Programme.

This is quite an achievement as this year the programme was opened to all clubs in our district, and

for the first time to clubs outside of our district, and further to that the amount of police officers

offered participation in the programme was limited.

Those interested had to complete a very comprehensive application form – just like a job application!

There were 15 applications with only 9 selected.

We are yet to receive the name and position of the police officer but will update you in due course.

I want to congratulate Cathy on this selection and know that she will be a top class representative of

our club in this elite programme.

From Youth/Vocational …

We have nominated two local students: Caitlin Minney (Lowther Hall) and Lillian Brown (PEGS -

daughter of past Rotarian Russell) to the District Selection committee to attend National Youth

Science Forum (NYSF) in Canberra. Many of you will remember this as the same Forum Andrew Ha’s

son James attended 18 months ago. They will participate in District selection process in coming

month. Only approximately 1/3 of nominated candidates are chosen for this prestigious Forum.

Western Health enters Donations In Kind partnership

Western Health is delighted to announce its partnership with local international aid organisation, Donations In

Kind Project (or DIK).

DIK’s core principle is that donated goods be given to people in genuine need for free.

Western Health sees DIK as a practical solution to improve its corporate social responsibility.

The partnership offers many beneficial outcomes:

• Dealing with a well reputed international aid organisation with demonstrated outcomes over 13 years

• A streamlined process for donation of functional medical equipment and consumables, when WH wish

to discard of it

• DIK offers direction to staff wishing to get involved in or support an international volunteer project via

its auspice body, Rotary International

• Confidence that the all items WH donate will benefit the success of particular projects

• Manages issues of liability when due process is followed

• Reduced waste

• Good corporate citizenship on behalf of WH

For more details on the DIK partnership, email Catherine O’Shea at [email protected] or David Dippie at

Coming Soon : A session to further develop our Club’s Vision …

Club Vision facilitation helps a Rotary Club design its own VISION, and then sets out the steps necessary to achieve

that vision. The result is not a vision decided by the Rotary District or by Rotary International, it is a vision designed

and endorsed by the Club’s own members that will help to ensure continuity and consistency in its leadership &

programming, to set the stage for future progress.

By starting with the end in mind, successful clubs:

• Sustain and increase membership

• Implement successful service projects

• Support the Rotary Foundation

• Develop leaders in the club and beyond

And develop a long-range plan which creates;

• Continuity of leadership, vision and process

• Consistency in programming

• Consensus, solidarity & unanimity in purpose and action

During the session the Members of the Rotary Club of Essendon will review every aspect of the Club’s functions and

determine the way forward for the Club.

During the coming weeks all Members of the Rotary Club of Essendon will be invited to participate in an online

survey, which should take between 15 and 20 minutes to complete. This will allow for a current benchmark of your

Club to be achieved. The results of your anonymous survey will be forwarded to Club President, Lisa Lowcock prior

to your Club Vision session.

The information gathered in the survey will be used as a starting point for the Club Vision facilitation on Saturday

30th

August 2014 which will commence at 2 pm and go for 4 hours. At the end of the 4 hour process the members

will have a clear vision of:

• What the Club stands for in its community

• The Club’s target membership size in 5 years

• Identification of the Clubs attributes

• Top 3 objectives for each Avenue of Service

• Ways to improve the Club’s leadership development

• Understanding of the Club’s Leadership Plan

It is anticipated that a good representation of your Members will volunteer to attend the facilitation session. Once

the facilitation is completed, various responsibilities will be allocated and implemented at the Club. The entire

membership will be given a summary of the outcomes of the session and the plan will then be implemented in the

coming month.

The District Club Vision Facilitation Team is looking forward to assisting the Rotary Club of Essendon with this very

important facilitation session.

If you have any questions please contact Pres. Lisa Lowcock or Pres. Elect/Club Vision Coordinator Peter Halaseh

Here’s what others have had to say...

“We are truly on a new adventure, with a fresh sense of excitement and possibility. Thank you for making this

happen”.

“If other clubs experience the same level of progress that we are enjoying, this truly ranks among the most

significant contributions to Rotary that I will experience”.

“It’s so simple, it actually works; the process is sound and easy to follow”.

“The session generated a great deal of enthusiasm and gave the club a point from which to rebuild and progress”.

ROTARY MEMBERSHIP

New members are vital,

For Rotary’s survival,

Especially, with our aging, population,

To fill places, we need,

We look, for the lead,

To the members of this generation.

We need good workers,

Not, knife and forkers,

The quality, of members, does count,

We know they’re out there,

Those people, who care,

For Rotary’s, future, is paramount.

Develop a plan,

Find them, where you can,

It is really, up to you,

To give others, the chance,

Will help enhance,

Those Ideals of Rotary, so true.

As, we all know,

It’s the way to go,

They did it, for us, we say,

It gave us, the pleasure,

And memories to treasure,

Do something, about it, today.
