‘De generale repetitie is achter de rug.’ Zo noemt LOC-voorzitter Cees Snijders de eerste twee dagen van de EHL. ‘We konden nog aanpassingen doorvoeren, bijvoorbeeld om het parkeren soepeler te laten verlopen. In het weekend moet alles kloppen.’ Al maanden wordt keihard gewerkt door de acht leden van het Local Or-ganizing Committee. ‘Onze club heeft een mooie reputatie opgebouwd als EHL-organisator’, vertelt Cees. ‘Bloe-mendaal trekt met de EHL net even meer bezoekers dan andere clubs. Misschien door de mooie omgeving, onze trouwe aanhang of het hockey, maar we zetten ook een solide or-ganisatie neer, met ruim aandacht voor een goed financieel resultaat.’

Als voorzitter van de LOC houdt Cees van duidelijkheid: ‘We zijn op alles voorbereid. Hierdoor ontstaat ruimte voor improvisatie en die heb je nodig. Er gebeurt immers altijd wel iets onverwachts.’ Het LOC heeft een waar leger van zeer betrokken vrijwil-ligers ter beschikking. ‘Fantastisch, want het is een grote organisatieklus. Natuurlijk kunnen er mensen op het laatste moment toch niet en moeten gaten worden opgevuld.’

In de voorverkoop zijn voor zaterdag, zondag en maandag al 3.000 kaarten per dag verkocht, maar de organi-satie rekent op 5.000 bezoekers per dag. ‘We richten ons sterk op hore-caopbrengst, vandaar het prachtig gesitueerde promodorp van waaruit je niets mist van de wedstrijd. Op dag één overtrof de foodomzet al onze verwachting.’ Al voegt Cees lachend toe: ‘Het hielp natuurlijk wel dat Bloemendaal rond etenstijd speelde.’ Clubvoorzitter Hendrik Goeman Borgesius is enorm trots dat zijn club opnieuw de EHL host en nog wel tijdens het 120-jarig bestaan. ‘Het is indrukwekkend dat zoveel vrijwil-ligers al dat werk verzetten om het toernooi tot een succes te maken. We hoeven daar niets voor te doen. Het is hier vanzelfsprekend dat je mee-helpt.’ (CC)

Welkom bij Bloemendaal

The dress rehearsal is over! That is how LOC Chairman Cees Snijders refers to the two quieter days of the EHL. ‘It allowed us to make some improvements, for example to ensure more efficiency with parking. In the weekend, everything has to go smoothly.’

For months, the eight members of the Local Organizing Committee(LOC) have worked very hard. ‘Our club has a strong reputation to uphold when organizing the EHL’, Cees explains. ‘With the EHL, Bloemendaal manages to attract a bit more visitors than other clubs. This may well be due to the beautiful surroundings, our faithful supporters or our fine hockey. However, we also know how to provide solid organization, whilst keeping an eye on the financial result.’ As chairman of the LOC, Cees likes clarity: ‘We are prepared for everything. This allows us to improvise when needed. Something unexpected al-ways happens.’ The LOC has at its disposal an army of volunteers. ‘Fantastic, but this also requires a lot of organization. Of course some volunteers need to cancel at the last minute and then we need to find adequate replacement.’

Already, 3000 tickets per day have been pre-sold for matches on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The organization expects 5000 visitors per day. ‘We have a strong focus on food and beverage services. Hence the well-situated expo from which you can also follow the matches. On the first day, the food sale revenue exceeded our expectation. ‘Although’, Cees adds with a smile ‘it helped that Bloemendaal was playing around dinner time.’ (CC)

Hans-Erik Tuijtnieuwe voorzitter EHLBloemendaler Hans-Erik Tuijt volgt Jons Hensel op als voorzitter van de Euro Hockey League. Hij heeft de functie vooral uit enthousiasme voor het hockey geaccepteerd. ‘Het is een uitdaging om de EHL nóg groter te maken’, aldus Tuijt, die in het dagelijks leven director global sponsoring is bij Heineken. ‘Er zijn wereldwijd miljoenen hockeylief-hebbers die graag willen kijken naar mooie EHL-beelden. De beste spelers van de wereld doen mee. We stellen alles in het werk om het hockey spectaculair in beeld te gaan brengen.’ De komende dagen is hij nog niet in functie: het voor-zitterschap van Tuijt begint dinsd-agochtend. St. Germain HC-Club Egara 1-1 (4-5 so)Club Egara became the first side through to the KO8 as they won a dramatic shoot-out as Quico Cortes saved the final penalty from Guillaume Samson after nine perfect efforts beforehand. It means the Spanish side are through to the last eight of the competition for the first time since 2009, enjoying their return to the EHL after a lengthy absence.

Dinamo Kazan-UHC Hamburg 0-1Tom Mieling’s 25th minute goal was all that stood between three-time champions UHC Ham-burg and Russia’s Dinamo Kazan as they took a tentative step into the KO8. He unleashed a superb backhand finish after intercepting a loose ball out of defence to win the game.

Harvestehuder THC-KHC Dragons 2-6EHL specialists KHC Dragons (photo) once again saved their best form for the competition with a superb dismantling of reigning champions Harvestehuder THC to reach the KO8. Florent van Aubel’s stunning first goal was augmented by second half goals from Matthew Cobbaert and Kyle Good saw them run out impressive 5-2 win-ners. HTHC’s corner machine failed to function, meanwhile, as their reign as champions came to an end.

KS Pomorzanin Torun-HC Bloemendaal 2-14Bloemendaal proved far too strong for a hapless Pomorzanin Torun as they eased their way into the KO8 in front of their noisy home fans. The tie was effectively won in the first eight minutes when Tom Boon netted twice with Diede van Puffelen making it 0-3. By half-time, it was 0-8 and they got up to 0-11 before Torun rallied with goals from Michal Nowakowski and Michal Kunklewski. But Bloemendaal continued to run up the goals, ending up 2-14 victors by the end with Boon ending up with five of them.

Reigning champions already out

Real Club de Polo-Rot Weiss Köln 1-2Tom and Mats Grambusch helped turn things around to hand Rot Weiss Koln a place in Saturday’s quarter-finals as they came from a goal down to defeat Real Club de Polo in a huge tussle. In the second half both sides had their chances to take the lead as time wore on with Xavi Lleonart pushing Polo forward while Rot Weiss also drew good stops from Oriol Fabregas. Mats Grambusch won it with seven minutes to go when he cut in from the right sideline before unleashing an angle reverse-stick shot that snuck through the goalkeeper’s defences.

Promodorp met topuitzicht

Samen met een team van 15 daadkrachtige vrijwilligers heeft Jan Aart Kruiswijk een indruk-wekkend promodorp neergezet. Hij is tevreden als alle lijntjes en kabels goed liggen en alle ‘mussenbekjes’ zijn gevoed. Al maanden geleden maakte Jan Aart de plannen voor de EHL: ‘Je moet echt iets moois neerzetten om het

evenement binnen te kunnen slepen. En dat is gelukt! We hebben een heel hockeyveld ingericht als promo-dorp. Nieuw is dat de tenten zo zijn opgesteld, dat je prachtig zicht hebt op de club en op het wedstrijdveld.’ Het promodorp ligt centraal op het EHL-terrein. Bezoek-ers komen er langs voor ze de tribune op gaan. Het is aangelegd op een waterveld en zo’n veld is natuurlijk kwetsbaar. Jan Aart: ‘We hebben de ondergrond zo vlak mogelijk gemaakt met platen. Hier overheen ligt een nieuwe lap gras. We doen er alles aan om het wa-terveld te beschermen!’ Midden in het promodorp ligt het food court. Tijdens het toernooi werken hier zo’n 200 vrijwilligers in shifts van vier uur. Bezoekers kunnen kiezen uit een ruim aanbod, van hamburger tot broodje zalm. Ook de frietkar en de koffiecorner ontbreken niet.

Achter het food court staat een grote tent met genoeg ruimte voor een feestje. Een biertje is er zo gehaald bij één van de vijf tappunten en iedere middag staat DJ Yogi achter zijn draaitafel. Op zaterdagavond gaat het dak er af, want dan gaat het feest door tot mid-dernacht! (CC)

Beeston HC-Royal Daring 2-2 (2-4 so)Royal Daring’s debut EHL season marches on as they prevailed in the KO16, just about, in a shoot-out ahead of English champions Beeston after normal time had ended in a tempestuous 2-2 draw. That left the shoot-out and ultimate glory for Daring as Cosyns, Fabian Wegnez, Manu Brunet and Sergi Enrique scored while Beeston missed twice.

MHC Oranje Zwart-HC Arminen 2-0Oranje Zwart made hard work of it but eventual-ly got the better of Austria’s SV Arminen – play-ing in their first KO16 tie – to reach the quarter-finals with a 2-0 win courtesy of Niek van der Schoot and Mink van der Weerden. The first half proved even enough in terms of chances with Arminen looking dangerous on the counter attack while Oranje Zwart spurned a quartet of penalty corners. It was rough on the goal-keeper who was superb throughout, especially in a helter-skelter second half. He made one incredible triple save while Jelle Galema and Rob Reckers missed out on some gilt-edge chances. The game was made safe inside the final two minutes when Mink van der Weerden took down a diagonal ball, beating a player in the process, and then smashing home with a thud.

Waterloo Ducks HC-SV Kampong 0-2Robbert Kemperman and Loick Luypaert supplied a goal in each half to see Kampong complete the quarter-final line-up as they produced a solid 2-0 win over Waterloo Ducks. The Utrecht side had the greater cutting edge while the Ducks’ best efforts were confounded by David Harte who made some key interventions from their best attacks. Kampong’s first goal was a thing of beauty, Thierry Brinkman providing a delicious back-door pass to Rutger Marres who angled a pass to Kemperman to tip in. Loick Luypaert killed off the tie in the 59th minute: 2-0.

Red Army goed bij stemSUPPORTERS

‘Komaan mannen! Komaan!’. ‘Schoon!’. ‘Goe geklopt!’ Zelfs als ze ‘sjiet’ zeggen na een tegen-valler, dan klinkt het melodieus. Hun luide aan-moediging komt minder fanatiek over dan van de Duitse fans, maar schijn bedriegt. De D-side, of Red Army, hoort met hart en ziel bij de Dragons, dat je uitspreekt op z’n Frans.

Their Flemish encouragements are oddly charming to the Dutch. Even their shouts of ‘Sjiet’ after a disappointing pass sound melodious. At first, their loud cheers seem less fanati-cal than those of the German fans. But that is deceptive. The D-side, also known as the Red Army, is completely dedicated to the Dragons.

These supporters master a volume, articulation and tremolo that could just as well belong in an opera house. Their songs are often adaptations of popular and catchy tunes such as ‘Hey Jude’ and ‘Oh when the Saints…’. The supporters of Harvestehuder try to challenge them in song but lack the numbers and lung capacity to match them. They concede in applause when the 2-4 score is announced.

A group of Dutch children joins the Belgians in song. But when the boys get bold and start singing ‘Alles ist vorbei’ they are quickly repri-manded by the men from Brasschaat: no negative or unsportsmanlike behavior. After the match the Dragons players thank their supporters and when the Harvestehuder players go to their supporters to thank them, the D-side also applauds the opposing team.

The Dragons look forward to a rematch against Bloemendaal. Tony: ‘In the EHL final in 2013, the Dragons supporters were spread out and in the back of the bleachers. That way they could not form a united front to support their team. Hopefully that will be different this time.’ As of Saturday their youth team will join them, so we can still expect a lot from the red corral! (WK)

Match ends in a tie? Shoot-outs!

Results KO16 Todays matches

In the EHL KO16, KO8 and Final 4, matches ending in a tie will be determined by penalty shoot-outs. In that case, an attacking player will have 8 seconds to pass the goal-keeper and score. It is a longstand-ing tradition that the EHL experi-ments with new rules. One of these new rules relates to how a long

corner shot is taken. If a ball goes over the back-line, the attacking team will take a 23-meter free-hit at the point that is in a straight line from where the ball crossed the back-line. Game time is 2 x 35 min-utes, but every half is interrupted after 17,5 minutes for a 2,5 minute time-out. (FH)

Deze supporters hebben een volume, tremolo en articu-latie die bij de opera niet zouden misstaan. Hun liederen zijn veelal aanpassingen van bekende, aanstekelijke liedjes, zoals ‘Hey Jude’ en ‘Oh, when the Saints...’. De supporters van Harvestehuder proberen er nog tegenin te gaan, maar kunnen door hun geringere aantal en long-inhoud de impact niet evenaren. Ze gaan maar over op applaus als de 2-4 valt.

Een pluk Nederlandse kinderen zingt mee met de Belgen. Als de jongetjes overmoedig worden, en ‘Alles ist vorbei’ gaan zingen, worden ze meteen teruggefloten door de mannen uit Brasschaat: geen negativiteit, sportief blijven. Na de wedstrijd komen eerst de Dragons-spelers hun aanhang bedanken, maar als Harvestehuder ver-volgens naar zijn supporters komt, wordt er ook geklapt vanaf de D-side.

Er wordt uitgekeken naar een revanche op Bloemendaal. Tony: ‘In de EHL-finale van 2013 werden de Dragons sup-porters helaas een beetje verspreid en achteraf geplaatst, waardoor we niet als één verenigd front ons team konden steunen. Hopelijk is dat dit keer anders.’ Vanaf zaterdag komt in elk geval ook hun jeugd er nog bij, dus dan valt er nog heel wat te verwachten uit het rode vak! (WK)

De mascotte van Bloemendaal Dames 1 is nu meer dan ooit een Mus on a mission, namelijk voor de Stichting Sport Helpt. Sport Helpt is opgericht door de Olympische sporters en Bloemendaal-hockeyers Rogier Hofman en Tim Jenniskens.

De stichting organiseert droom-ontmoetingen voor ernstig zieke kinderen in het ziekenhuis met een (Olympische) topsporter uit zijn of haar favoriete sport. Sport Helpt werkt daarbij nauw samen met de Nederlandse Vereniging voor Kindergeneeskunde (NVK), het NOC*NSF (de overkoepelende organisatie voor alle Olympische sporters), en verschillende voetbal-clubs uit de eredivisie. Inmiddels

zijn er al meer dan 250 atleten aan verbonden en dit worden er steeds meer.

En vergeet natuurlijk niet wat in de collectebus te doen, want dit levert heel veel plezier op voor kinderen die het hard verdienen! Mus on a mission

The ladylike sparrow is the mascot of the Bloemendaal Women’s 1 Team and now, more than ever, it has a mission. Missy is dedicated to aiding the Sport Helps Foundation founded by Olympic Bloemendaal hockey players Rogier Hofman and Tim Jenniskens.

The Foundation organises dream meetings in hospitals for children with serious ill-nesses with their favorite (Olympic) athlete. It closely collaborates with the Dutch As-sociation for Children’s Medicine, the Dutch Olympic Committee and Sports Foundation (NOC*NSF) and various Dutch Major League Soccer clubs. More than 250 athletes sup-port the Foundation and more keep joining.

Take a picture together with Missy when you see her and share it on social media with the hash tag #sporthelpt #EHL15. Ik start de woensdag-morgen zoals ik hem de laatste maanden altijd start. Ik sta op, te laat, om dat kleine beetje extra

slaap te pakken. Douche, ontbijt en vervolgens hijs ik me in mijn pak met das. Maar zodra ik op-sta voel ik het toch nog een klein beetje... It’s a game day!

Ik vergis me bijna, want mijn lichaam wil dat pak vandaag helemaal niet aan. Mijn lichaam schreeuwt om een oranje shirt met nr. 6, een hagel witte broek en witte sokken. Ik vergeet mijn aktetas bijna en wil mijn stick meenemen.

Ik stap op het fietsje om naar mijn werk te gaan - wat een toeval, het is ook nog eens de hoofdsponsor. Warming-up gedaan.

Ik kom aan op werk en ga zitten, de werkdag begint. Maar ik merk al snel dat ik weer afdwaal naar 2009 en 2013, toen we de cup ‘mee naar huis brachten’.

Ik besef me weer hoe onbe-schrijfelijk mooi het is om vandaag voor eigen publiek te mogen vlam-men! Ik droom verder en zie Boon er vijf maken... Ik droom nog even verder en zie dat het pas een opwarmertje is voor wat komen gaat.
