Het AIESEC bestuur

Beste lezer,

Liefs,DaphneVoorzitter AIESEC Nijmegen

Qing, Rober-to and Serena tell about their experiences in the Netherlands. What do they think about the Dutch?

Page 9: Terra Cognita Nr 2

Name: QingNationality: ChineseHere since: May 2010Company: Tweede Golf

Did you notice some typical Dutch traditions?“I noticed that there are bags hanging on top of the fl ag poles of some houses. A friend told me the meaning: a student in that house just fi nished high school. Is it the celebration of being grown up or a new life started? It would be nice to know!”“I noticed another thing re-lated to hanging something outside the house: a big bird carrying a baby. I guess that means that a baby is going to be born or is already born.”

What do you fi nd weird about the Dutch? “A strange thing for me is that people still discriminate prostitutes and homosexuals in the Netherlands, while they are both legal in the country for decades. Quite confl ict-ing...”

What habit is characteristic for the Dutch everyday life? “Lunch! People here only eat a couple of slices of bread. It was rather strange and I did not enjoy it in the beginning, but now I am used to it. Prob-ably I will do it as well when I go back to China!”

Name: Roberto Nationality: SpanishHere since: June 2010Company: NoXqs

Have you noticed an unusual habit in the Netherlands? “My fi rst day here was sunny and hot and one of the fi rst things I heard was: “Let’s go to have dinner in the park”. What a weird idea I thought, probably we are going to be alone in the park, but I was wrong! More than a hundred people had the same idea and the park was crowded.”

What do you think about Dutch eating habits? “In Spain I always eat with a napkin next to the plate. It is not so common here. Some-times it is a bit awkward to get your hands or your face dirty and have nothing to clean it with!”

What about Dutch houses?“Blinds... where are they? I haven’t seen one yet. Only curtains and I really miss to have blinds in my window. In fact it was hard to fall asleep with so much light coming through my window.”

And the traffi c? “There are different traffi c lights for bikers and pedes-trians. They are also not allowed to cross the street at the same time... I do not understand why yet!”

Name: SerenaNationality: ItalianHere since: August 2010Company: AIESEC

What dish do you fi nd typi-cally Dutch? “I noticed that Dutch people like to eat dishes where they mix everything together, es-pecially boiled vegetables. An example is the ‘Andijvie-stampot’. Apparently it is just easier for them to cut the meat in small pieces, mash the potatoes and eat every-thing mixed together. As an Italian I was speechless!“

Did you notice something unusual?“Because of the very liberal drugs policy, you would say that Dutch students spend most of their time in coffee shops, smoking pot and hanging around. But it is not true! I know for sure that Italian students make more use of drugs than Dutch do. Apparently, when something is legal it is not appealing anymore!”

What is the big difference between the Italians and the Dutch?“Italians take the car wher-ever they go. The never use bikes..only in their free time! And we use umbrellas when it rains. Dutch people do not care about getting wet..ap-parently!”

Mijn ding: prachtige reizen maken!

Top 3 of the world’s best beachesExuma Island, Bahamas Situated north of Cuba in the Atlan-tic Ocean, Great Exuma Island is the main island of a district consist-ing of 360 islands. All of them have the inevitably sapphire and aqua-marine blues that characterizes the Bahamas. From the opposite site on Stocking Island you can enjoy spectacular views from the top of a high cliff. It is a wonderful destina-

tion for sun-seekers, fi shermen, swimmers and people who want to enjoy boating and kayaking. And if you are interested, you may see the private owners of one of the islands, like Johnny Depp and Nicolas Cage, chilling in their Bahamian Island.

Mahe Island, SeychellesMahe is the largest of the Seychelles islands, situated in the Indian Ocean, north of Madagascar. The coastline of-fers more than 70 beaches which make up the ring around the mountainous island. From 6 in the morning you can enjoy 12 hours of sun, soft sand, crys-talline blue waters perfect for snorkel-ing and swimming. A very good place for surfi ng, but be careful... the power of the waves may be dangerous! The whole archipelago is to discover. It offers beaches with thousands of palm trees and snow white sands: a stunning view!

Whitehaven Beach, AustraliaNorth-East of the coast of Aus-tralia there is a 6 km shore along the Whitsunday Island. Heli-copter views show the fantastic characteristic of this beach, with white sands which look like snow and warm ocean waters of pale jade and turquoise. Whitehaven Beach is well known for its sand which is composed for 98% out of silica. It is among the purest throughout the world.

I love you, tomorrow).

A Chinese girl is telling her perception about the differences between the Netherlands and China

Qing Han a, Chinese girl aged 24, is in the Netherlands since May 2010. She is doing a technical traineeship in Nijmegen for a company called ‘Tweede Golf’. Qing is already known with traveling and staying abroad. Before she arrived in the Netherlands she has been studying and working for AIESEC in Finland for almost 3 years.

Food & Drinks“So far I didn’t experience too much typical Dutch food, although I am open to try every-thing. One thing that I really like is the Dutch haring.

Another striking thing to me is the Dutch lunch habits. It is very small and they usually eat only some slices of bread. In the beginning I really had to adjust to this small portion of food during lunch, but after a while I saw the benefits. Eat-ing a big, warm meal as lunch gives you a big after dinner dip. You can’t really work productive after eating such a big meal. Having only some slices of bread doesn’t give me this problem and I can continue work much better after the lunch.”

“Nijmegen really feels like home to me!”

Men & Women“Of course the people are much taller here, es-pecially the man. But Western people are also a lot similar to each other and in the beginning I had problems with interpreting the expressions of the people. In Finland the problem was even bigger because most of the people have blond hair and blue eyes. Although the differences are more obvious in the Netherlands sometimes it is still hard to see.”

Architecture“In the Netherlands you see a lot of houses made of red bricks. In general the houses have very big windows. I really like Nijmegen. Although there are many different kinds of houses, it all feels as the same atmosphere, which is very cosy. Nijmegen really feels as home to me. “

“ Dutch people are as loud during dinner as Chinese people are.. “

Culture“ There are a lot of culture differences be-tween China and the Netherlands, therefore I only name some of them:

• Dutch people party till very late in the night;• Dutch people are as loud during eating as Chinese people are, especially compared to Finland where people hardly say a word when they are eating; • In the Netherlands there a lot of different sports to choose from;• Almost all the kids and students are doing a sport;• Dutch people are more rational.”

CHINA

Inhabitants: around 1.300.000.000Surface: 93.000.000 km2

Food & Drinks“China has a very different food culture com-pared to the Netherlands. I already mentioned that we have a big, warm meal during lunch. Normally with rice or noodles.

The food in China is also much more exotic and special. We love to experiment with food and we are always trying to fi nd new recipes or combinations. For example: Chinese people eat every part of the fi sh or chicken, not just the meat. Most of the time it are the non-meat parts of an animal that we see as the delicates-sen.

Another difference is the way we consume alcohol. Traditionally, Chinese people only con-sume alcoholic drinks together with food. There is no such a thing as just drinking a beer; it is always in combination with food. Nowadays this perception is changing a little bit in the big-ger cities because of the Western infl uences, but most of the people are still taking alcoholic drinks only with food.”

“In China, the woman is in control over her husband, family and household”.

Man & Woman“Relationships in China and the way they start are very different to the Netherlands. Chinese people are normally very shy in making con-tact. Therefore it is much harder to fi nd some-body. The family is helping in this process; they are looking in their family relationships and network for a girl or a boy that fi ts their son or daughter. It’s not something like an arranged marriage; we also have the freedom to refuse. Another difference in relationships is that in China the woman is in control of the family.

She decides most of the ‘in-house’ decisions and spends the money. For the outside worldthey pretend that the man is in control but this is hardly the case.”

Architecture“In China there is a big difference between the ‘old’ architecture and the ‘new’ architecture. I really like the old architecture: we have really great old buildings. You usually fi nd a beautiful garden in the house with a mountain and water fl owing down the mountain and lots of fl owers and plants. This brings the people in the house good energy or as we call it: ‘feng shu’. Also there are a lot of symbolic colours used: red for happiness and gold for fortune. The new architecture on the other hand is very cold. The buildings look all the same and there are no gardens in the house. The windows are small and stacked with paper you can’t see through. I don’t like the atmosphere of the new buildings.”

Culture• “Instead of going to bars or nightclubs till very late in the night, Chinese people love to do karaoke when going out with friends;• Birthdays are only celebrated by the elder people in China. They make big banquets for all their guests. Chinese people think that celebrating their birthday with a lot of food will make them live longer;• Sporting is mainly done by the elder people, children and students are way to busy with their school to have time to exercise;• There are not so many sports to choose from, almost everybody is doing yoga or dancing;• Chinese people are more modest and emo-tional than the Dutch”.

Dit helpt me hier enorm.

Slippers in mijn maat.

I go travelling and take with me...What is in the suitcase of foreign exchange participants when they come to the Netherlands and what do they bring back home? Jekabs is an AIESEC exchange participant from Latvia. He is now doing a technical internship at a com-pany in Nijmegen, called Hesticare. He arrived in September and will stay for about a year.

What did you bring from Latvia when you came to the Netherlands? The only thing I brought was a laptop, toothpaste and a toothbrush. That’s all! I only had a small hand luggage with me.

You came all the way to the Netherlands just with a small hand luggage?!Obviously, I had a big suitcase with me when I was at the airport in Latvia, but for some reason there was an enormous line for the check in. I was so scared to miss my fl ight that I decided to leave my suitcase home. Later, my girlfriend sent it to Hol-land and I got it a week later.

How did you manage your fi rst week with only a laptop, toothpaste and a toothbrush? It was not that hard and AIESEC Nijmegen helped me a lot. A friend of Daphne (President of AIESEC Nijmegen, 2010-2011) provided me with some casual clothes. Another AIESEC member took me to the city where I bought some formal clothes and shoes to wear on my fi rst working day. I didn’t need much more during my fi rst week.

So, after one week your suitcase arrived. What special things did you bring from Latvia?I am not the kind of person that packs my suitcase with all kinds of stuff that reminds me of Latvia, like pictures of my family and friends or particular food from my coun-try. The only ‘special’ thing I brought is a necklace of my girlfriend. One year is a long time to be away from each other, and I miss her a lot. Hopefully she will be able to visit me in the Netherlands.

Now you have been in Holland for over a month. Did you already buy typical Dutch stuff that you want to take home?Haha, no I didn’t. But that is for a practical reason: I didn’t receive my salary yet! Besides I didn’t really see a lot of things that I want to take home, but I do really like all the bikes here. I got one on my second day and I really love the culture of all the people riding bikes.

Page 20: Terra Cognita Nr 2

The food cornerGrey peas with bacon, LatviaA traditional Latvian dish is ‘Grey peas with bacon’ that Latvians even today prepare in holidays like Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

Ingredients

• 200 gr. grey peas • 60 gr. smoked bacon• 40 gr. onion• clabber• salt

Preparation 1. Soak the peas 2. Cover the soaked peas with hot water and boil until they become tender.3. Cut the bacon and the onion into small pieces, as you see in the picture and fry them in a pan.4. Add salt and/or spices to the bacon and onion.5. Serve the dried peas in a bowl (traditionally clay bowl), adding the fried bacon and the onion on top of it.6. Serve with a cup of clabber.

Tiramisù, ItalyThis is the most popular Italian cake and it is very highly caloric because of its ingredi-ents. There is a dispute whether it is original from Toscana, Piemonte or Veneto, how-ever, it comes from North Italy.

Ingredients• 6 eggs• 120 gr. sugar• 500 gr. Mascar-pone• 400 gr. Savoiardi• biscuits• Coffee

PreparationPrepare some coffee (espresso or strong coffee) which you will need to dip the bis-cuits. Put some sugar (if you like) and let it cool. For a stronger taste you can add some liquor, either some rum or Marsala wine. Separate egg yolks and whites. Whip with an electric mixer the egg yolks with half of the sugar until it is creamy white. Mix the mascarpone until there are no lumps and then whisk it together with the eggs and sugar you prepared earlier. In another bowl whip the egg whites with a tiny bit of salt until they are fluffy. Add them with the rest and mix only enough to blend. Over mixing will deflate the eggs. This is the cream for the tiramisù. Quickly dip a savoiardi in the espresso bowl and build a layer of savoiardi on the bottom of the pan. Spoon a layer of your cream across the layer of savoiardi and level it off. Use about half of the mascar-pone mix. Afterwards, dip another layer of savoiardi and lay them on the cream. Use the remaining cream and level it off.
