Places to eat

There’s an amazing array of places to eat in and around Midhurst. No matter whether you’re after low-key and informal or something rather smarter, you’re sure to find somewhere that fits the bill.

In Midhurst:You will find everything from al fresco eating in the newly refurbished Market Square (a great place to take a break while walking the Town Trail), cream teas in medieval surroundings and Spanish tapas right through to modern British fine dining.

There are also a multitude of independent cafés and teashops as well as restaurants featuring cuisine from all corners of the globe.

Out of Town:Here the traditional country pub really comes in to its own – but think beyond conventional English pub grub or gastropubs. Instead expect gardens with great views of the Downs, cosy log fires in winter and landlords who keep great cellars and serve great food. The farmland of the South Downs is a fantastic resource so look out for plenty of locally sourced ingredients on the menus.

Locally sourced ingredients are also a feature at the award-winning Cowdray Farm Shop & Café on the outskirts of Midhurst. In store there is a traditional butchery serving Estate reared meat, a comprehensive deli counter with a range of artisan cheeses and a selection of charcuterie.

The South DownsNational Park

From rolling hills to bustling market towns, the South Downs National Park’s landscapes cover 1,600km2 of breathtaking views and hidden gems. Midhurst nestles in the heart of the National Park and is the home of the South Downs Centre – the perfect place to plan your adventures.

Stunning HeathlandsThe town of Midhurst is surrounded by some of the best lowland heath in the country. This gentle landscape is home to sand lizards, Dartford warblers and nightjars. In spring it’s bright with yellow gorse but come high summer the purple heather takes centre stage. But look closer and you’ll start to notice many other plants – bog cotton-grass, orchids, sundew and the amusingly titled sprawling dodder.

Iping and Stedham common are both easy to visit on foot or by bus from Midhurst. Stretch your legs further with a walk to Ambersham

common. Heaths are great places to visit with dogs but with animals out grazing and ground birds nesting don’t forget to take the lead.

Taste the National ParkThe National Park is increasingly being recognised for the high-quality, sustainable food produced in its landscapes. With over 20 vineyards and more than 50 breweries, dairies creating over 80 regional cheeses, Southdown Lamb, Sussex Beef and superb fish from the Sussex and Hampshire coastal waters, this is a real foodie haven.

Plan your epicurean adventures at southdownsfood.org where you’ll find hundreds of local food and farm shops, restaurants, pubs and cafés, vineyards, breweries and food producers eager to share a range of delicious produce grown, reared, caught and made in the area.

The National Trust in the South Downs

The National Trust cares for over 15,000 acres of the South Downs, protecting landscapes and wildlife alongside houses and gardens rich in historyand colour.

West of Midhurst is Uppark – a Georgian mansion packed with beautiful furnishings. Seek out the incredible 18th-century doll’s house, and relax on lawns overlooking the South Downs. ‘Below stairs’ you’ll find Victorian servants’ quarters, once home to a young HG Wells and inspiration for his Gothic horror, The Time Machine.

To the north is magnificent 17th-century Petworth House and Park, with its world-famous art collection and fascinating historic kitchens. 2016 commemorates the 300th anniversary of Petworth Park’s famous designer, ‘Capability’ Brown, celebrated here by intriguing exhibitions, films, themed walks and talks.

The chalk grassland, ancient woodsand heaths around Midhurst are

wonderful walking destinations. Head out along the River Rother, through Woolbeding Parkland and into the countryside. Woolbeding Gardens lie at the heart of the estate, a horticultural jewel packed with floral borders and follies.

Nearby Harting Down nature reserve offers skylarks and carpets of pyramidal orchids. The site is steeped in history – there’s an Iron Age hill fort and the remains of a Napoleonic war telegraph station on Beacon Hill.

Just 30 minutes away you’ll find Hinton Ampner. The wonderful gardens are filled with scent and colour, feature a delightful walled kitchen garden, quirky topiary, acres of bluebell woods and panoramic views over ancient parkland. In the house you’ll discover intimate rooms filled with beautiful collections.

Midhurst - the home of British poloCowdray Park Polo Club is recognised worldwide as the home of British polo. The season lasts from late April until September and the highlight is the Gold Cup for the British Open Polo Championship, held through June-July. Spectator entry starts from just £5/head (U12s free).

IndoorsThe newly built Grange Centre offers squash and badminton courts, drop-in exercise classes and a well-equipped gym. There’s an indoor climbing wall at Midhurst Rother College that’s open to the public and suitable for all levels from beginner to advanced.
