  • Long Island Lions Quest Initiative

Lions Quest is a life skills program of Lions Clubs International Foundation, implemented in more than 80 countries around the world. Lions Quest programs teach young people skills necessary for everyday success. These skills include learning to accept responsibility, communicating effectively, setting goals, making healthy decisions and resisting pressure to use alcohol and drugs.

Lions Quest programs provide high-quality, research based classroom resources for teachers and age-appropriate learning material for students and present opportunities for students to learn and practice skills that build and enhance positive relationships. This program also involves the family and community in supporting the healthy development of young people. This is a K-12 program that provides teaching units for elementary (Skills for Growing), middle school (Skills for Adolescence) and high school (Skills for Action).

Here on Long Island, the Suffolk County Lions have joined with the Nassau County Lions to form the Long Island Lions Quest Initiative. The purpose of this joint effort is to aide school districts in bringing this program to their students without overburdening their budgets or their taxpayers. We applied for and received a $100,000 Lions Quest Core 4 Grant in 2013. In order to receive the full amount of this grant, we must raise $33,000 between our two districts. Currently both districts have donated equally. We continue to need donations from Lions clubs to reach our goal of $33,000. Please discuss this at your next board meeting. A pledge form is included in this newsletter for your club or any individual Lion to make a donation or pledge. Remember that pledges can be paid off over a two year period.

The money raised helps to offset the expenses of introducing a school district to this very important program, lowers the expense for a school district to train their teachers and supplies the districts with the manuals and lesson plans for teachers to put the program into effect. Teachers do not receive any pay increases for attending these trainings. Training seminars are presented on regular teacher workdays, so there is no extra pay for these professionals at all.

I look forward to sharing more about this program with you in the next issue of this newsletter. In the meantime, if you happen to have a school administrator in your club or have a good relationship with one, please let me know and we will be happy to meet with them to explain the benefits of this program.

Respectfully Submitted, PDG Lorri E. Rieger LI Lions Quest Chair

  • The Brandel-Murphy Youth Foundation is dedicated to helping children in the communities of New York State and Bermuda who need assistance. During these difficult economic times, it is our mission to give hope to any children in need. Currently we are exploring many opportunities to achieve that mission including partnerships with local children's hospitals throughout New York State and Bermuda and an Eyeglass program that will facilitate delivery of needed prescription eyeglasses to local children. Through the direction and partnership with local Lions Clubs, the Foundation can issue financial grants to promote projects that can change a child's life. For more information on our Grant Program, click here.

In order to fulfill these goals, the Foundation coordinates many ongoing fund raising programs. There will be more information in future issues of the District 20-S newsletter.

The Super Bowl Raffle will be held each year, with tickets going on sale in September. The cost of tickets is $20 each or 6 for $100.

The NYS & BLF was formed in 1993. The primary function of the Foundation is to provide funds to clubs and districts for projects beyond their capability through grant requests approved by the Foundation Board of Trustees. To obtain funds, the Foundation conducts various fund raising programs. These include the Robert J. Uplinger Distinguished Service Award Program, the annual raffle, the contributing member and contributing club programs.

We encourage each club in District 20-S to make a donation of $100 to the foundation. 100% of this donation will be used for the grant program (no administrative fees) and your club will receive a patch (or chevron after the first patch) for their club banner. If every club in our multiple were to participate just in the patch program alone, the NYS & BLF would be in an excellent position to help many clubs through the approval of grant submissions.

Will your club participate this year?

Respectfully Submitted, Lion Lorri E. Rieger NYS&BLF Trustee

  • Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind New Training Program

The training class is now 12 days not the 25 days as in the past. The new program is more demanding but less down time, an accelerated program gives students a better chance of success with there new partner. The chances of the dog becoming a guide are better then ever. Classes are smaller, usually about 8 to a class. This gives the trainers more time with the students.

I might raise another dog I am not quite sure it’s getting more demanding and because of my other obligations I don’t know if I will have the time to devote to a new puppy.

Luica, my last puppy is going to become a bomb detecting dog. She is a very smart dog but not suited for guide dog work.

Spencer who was the dog before Lucia is working as a guide for a man who lives in Lloyd Harbor. I think he lucked out. Harvey and Spencer will be coming to our dinner meeting to show his appreciation for sponsoring Spencer.
