STAROOT VACANCIES

Editor’s pick of the week:1976 is the year that brought change to the young people of south Africa. It is the year that young people fought for their right to education and freedom of expres-sion. Young people took it to the street to fight for change and better education. That group of young people had one common goal which was to have a better education for all. They were tired of oppression and being treated like animals.40 years later we still see young people taking it to the street to fight.

Today We see a lot of young people who are angry and who are not scared of death.What are we the young people of 2016 fight-ing for? . we seem to fight a lot and hold a lot of anger inside us. We .are not sure what we want but we do fight a lot, just like the young people of 1976 we take it to the street to fight but our fight is different from theirs . we burn our municipality building, schools, libraries and health care facilities all in the name of fighting for change.

Yes the young people of 1976 burned tired and building to get the attention of the oppressor as they wanted the system to change. Today we have free education, free municipality service and free health care but we are still angry. What are the young people of 2016 fighting for?. We are de-stroying our communities in the name of fighting for freedom. We kill each other all in the name of recognition.

Who is behind this anger that we hold so dearly as the young people of 2016. What have we the young people of 2016 have be-came. Are we freedom fighters or are de-stroyers. The young people of 1976 died for freedom they died for change but we the

young people of 2016 die for the differ-ent reasons. The young people people of 1976 were killed by their oppressor but we the young people of 2016 kill each other just for fun or to get respect. Young people of 2016 are angry but they don’t know why they are fighting or if they fighting the right fight.

I guess the big question is who is behind the fighting and killings of young people. Who is encouraging this anger young people have and who is their new oppressor. With so many young people with amazing skills we seem to have a big problem in not knowing what they want and what they are fighting

for. The future of our country is in the hands of young people but they seem to be like a ticking time bomb which can destroy every thing.

I’ve seen hundreds of business pitches, and most of them—at best—are just okay. There have been plenty of pretty good ones that hit all the key components of a pitch, but only a handful of those took it a step further and were truly great.

When I think about what set those excellent pitches apart from the rest, it turns out that they all shared some of the same qualities. And if you em-ploy these nine tips for taking a good pitch and making it great, you’re going to give the kind of pitch that stands out to investors, too.

1. Tell a real customer storyWhen possible, open your pitch by telling a real customer story that addresses the problem your product or service solves in the marketplace. Avoid using buzzwords and tech talk when you tell your story. Instead, use real names and real customer challenges. Keep it simple and realistic. In the end, what people will remember after they walk away from you are the stories you tell, so it’s important to have a few compelling customer stories ready to share.

2. Pare it down to the essentialsI’ve heard many entrepreneurs deliver their pitch as if they’re auctioning off their grandmother’s antiques. It must be because they think they need to address every aspect of their business plan in one fell swoop, but doing so makes them seem anxious, tense, and nervous. I always wish they’d relax and realize that when you’re giving a pitch, less is more. Prioritize the most important things you want to share and stick to those pieces—and take a nice big breath before you speak. Believe me, it will help you deliver a more compelling and thoughtful pitch.

3. Outline your business modelYour business model tells an investor how your idea will (or does) convert into being economically viable. The best way to show you how to com-municate your business model is to show you an example of a good one. Let’s take ZipCar, for instance. Their business model can best be de-scribed as:• A membership-based car sharing company (they brand their members as “zipsters”)• Reservations are easily and quickly made online• Customers pay by the hour or by the day• Serves US, UK, and Canadian markets• Also targeting college campuses

In just a few short bullets, you can see how they make money and from whom. Your business model should answer the questions: What do you sell? To whom? How much do they pay? and How do they pay you?

4. Make sure your presentation is crystal clear to anyone and everyone If you can get someone who doesn’t understand your business model to grasp what you’re communicating, then you’re prepared to give a pretty goodpitch.SomeoftheworstpitchesI’veseenhavebeenfilledwithacronyms,techspeak,andgobbledygook.Keepyourpitchshort,sweet,andto the point. Practice your pitch on someone outside of your company, and ask them to repeat what they think your business model is back to you. I’ve done this many times, and it’s always an eye-opening exercise to hear what people repeat back.

5. Talk about yourselfIt’simportanttoknowthatinvestorsinvestinpeoplefirst,andideassecond.Asamatteroffact,I’vehadseveralinvestorstellmetokeepthemposted on my next startup because they’d like to invest in me and my next venture. So don’t be afraid to toot the horn on your and your team’s accomplishments—especially if those accomplishments relate to what it takes to start and scale a venture. Tell (and whenever possible, show) the investors why you are the right people to lead this venture.

Assets = Liabilities + Equity

“By subtracting liabilities from assets, you can determine your company’s net worth at any given point in time.”The balance sheet for your business will allow you to see that the businesses’ assets and liabilities are balanced and what the company’s net worth is, and typically this information is compiled every quarter.The assets and liabilities on a balance sheet are both organized by time; with assets, the faster the business could make an asset liquid (convert it to cash), the higher it should be on the balance sheet. With liabilities, the sooner something needs to be paid, the higher up that line item goes.Now that we’ve had a general overview of the balance sheet, let’s take a deeper look at the information a balance sheet should include.

IN THIS ARTICLE, I’LL REVIEW:• Thecomponentsofabalancesheet• Theimportanceofabalancesheetinabusinessplan• BalancesheetexamplesLine by Line Breakdown of a Balance Sheet:As businesses differ from one another, so will their assets and liabilities. Inclusion of certain line items and their titles will vary slightly from business to business, but the equation remains the same: your business’s assets are reflected by its liabilities plus equity.AssetsCASH:Inthecontextofabalancesheet,cashmeansthemoneyyoucurrentlyhaveonhand.Inbusinessplanning,theterm “cash” represents the bank or checking account balance for the business, also sometimes referred to as “cash and cash equivalents” or “CCE.” A cash equivalent is an asset that is liquid and can be converted to cash immediately.ACCOUNTS RECEIVABLE:This is how much money people are supposed to pay you, but that you have not actually received yet (hence the “receivables”). Usually, this money is sales on credit, often from business to business (or “B2B”) sales, where your business has invoiced a customer.INVENTORY:Inventory includes the value of all of the finished goods and ready materials that your business has on hand but isn’t immediately using.CURRENT ASSETS:“Current assets are those that can be converted to cash within one year,” says Betenson. Cash, accounts receivable, and inventory are all current assets, and these amounts accumulated are sometimes referenced on a balance sheet as “Total Current Assets.”LONG-TERM ASSETS:Longtermassetsarealsoreferredtoas“fixedassets”andincludethingsthatwillhavealongstandingvalue,suchas land or equipment.Quick Tip:Most businesses end up with an “other assets” category on their balance sheet for those assets that might not really fit as either a current or non-current asset.ACCUMULATED DEPRECIATION:Accumulateddepreciationreducesthevalueofassetsovertime.Forexample,abusinesspurchasesacar,thecarwill lose value as time goes on.TOTAL LONG-TERM ASSETS:This term is sometimes used to describe long term assets + depreciation on a balance sheet.Liabilitiespayablenumberiscomprisedoftheregularbillsthatyourbusinessisexpectedtopay.Beawareifthisnumberisexceedinglyhigh,orifyourbusinessdoesn’thaveenoughtocoverit.
