Exploratieboringen

Eenvoudig wordt het niet, menen August Nelson, Manager Exploration bij Staats-olie, en Patrick Brunings, manager van Paradise Oil Company (POC), een doch-

termaatschappij van Staatsolie. Het exploratieprogramma voor Coronie en Nickerie heeft enige vertraging opgelopen, maar er is goede hoop op een vlot vervolg. Door menselijke, technische en natuurlijke factoren moest het aanvankelijke schema wor-den aangepast. Nog deze maand beginnen de exploratieboringen: in Coronie gaat het om vijf putten en in Nickerie om zeker tien.

Final frontierGeologen van Staatsolie hebben alle boorlocaties in Nickerie geïdentificeerd op basis van seismische data die in 2008 zijn verzameld. Het milieugedeelte is toever-trouwd aan een onafhankelijke consultant die sterk zal focussen op de waterhuis-houding van het gebied tegen de achtergrond van de rijstbouw. Verder is contact opgenomen met de eigenaren van alle percelen waarop gewerkt zal worden. Hun toestemming is nodig voor de boring van putten, de aanleg van wegen en het ver-voer van personeel en materieel over hun terreinen. “Allemaal grote uitdagingen, want we starten pas nadat de bevindingen van de milieuconsultant goed zijn bevonden en de grondeigenaren per brief hun toestem-ming hebben verleend,” zegt Nelson. Hij noemt Nickerie de final frontier voor onshore exploratie: de hele kuststrook - van de Cotticarivier in het oosten tot de Corantijnrivier in het westen – zal zijn geëxploreerd. “Een gebied van ongeveer 10.000 vierkante kilometer! En dat allemaal in iets meer dan drie jaar. Ter vergelij-king: het Tambaredjoveld beslaat ongeveer 150 vierkante kilometer.” De boringen zullen voornamelijk in het zuiden van Nickerie plaatsvinden. De put-ten die worden geboord hebben dieptes tussen de 700 en 1500 meter. “In feite is er heel weinig bekend over Nickerie, daarom is het nodig dat de exploratieborin-gen meer informatie zullen verschaffen over de geologische samenstelling van de bodem”, onderstreept Nelson.

OptimistischDe operaties in het westen van het land, over een oppervlakte van zeker 2.500 vierkante kilometer, zullen tussen de zes en acht maanden duren. Nelson is opti-mistisch. Om de exploratieboringen in Nickerie zo effectief mogelijk uit te voeren, is het gebied in drieën verdeeld: het noordelijk zwampgebied, het centraal gelegen “rijstgebied” en het zuidelijk zwampgebied. “Alle drie gebieden vereisen een ver-schillende aanpak en zelfs een ander type boormachine. Het boorprogramma van Nickerie is met recht het meest ambitieuze programma van de exploratiedivisie tot nu toe, alleen al om de afstand.” Om te lange reistijden te voorkomen, zal worden gewerkt vanuit een operatiebasis in Nickerie. De bedoeling hiervan is dat mens en materieel effectief worden ingezet. Ook de veiligheid van de operatie wordt nauw-lettend bewaakt. “De verwachtingen zijn erg hooggespannen maar daar houden wij ons nu niet mee bezig. We willen dit project starten en heel graag ook. Aan de hand van de resultaten zal het vervolgtraject uitgestippeld worden. But we will see soon enough!,” klinkt Nelson vastberaden.

CoronieDe boring van vijf putten in Coronie wordt gecoördineerd door POC en zijn part-ner Tullow Oil. “Er is heel weinig geologische informatie over dit gebied”, zegt Brunings. In 2007 en 2008 is een analyse gemaakt van de Coroniezwamp, om inzicht te krijgen in de terreingesteldheid. Begin dit jaar zijn medewerkers daadwer-kelijk het gebied ingegaan om de bodemgesteldheid in kaart te brengen. “In feite moest de eerste put al geboord zijn, maar we zijn op technische en natuurlijke uit-dagingen gestuit”, zegt Brunings. De geplande aanleg van toegangs- en afvoerwe-gen voor de putlocaties liep vertraging op, omdat de vegetatie en bodemgesteldheid in werkelijkheid anders bleken te zijn dan aanvankelijk was gedacht.

Negen graafmachinesHet was de bedoeling om met twee graafmachines te werken. Om de achterstand in te lopen zijn nu negen graafmachines ingezet om de toegang tot de putlocaties te maken. Ook zijn er nieuwe civieltechnische methoden toegepast. Inmiddels zijn alle voorbereidingen gaande om de vijf putten te boren. Voor deze opdracht is een contractor ingehuurd. Ruim veertig medewerkers zullen vanuit een basiskamp de 24 uursoperatie draaien in shifts van acht uren. Coronie is een compleet nieuwe uitdaging, omdat de zwamp daar in vele opzich-ten verschilt met die in Saramacca, waarmee Staatsolie ervaring heeft. De operaties in Coronie moesten dus afgestemd worden op de specifieke omstandigheden daar. Vanwege de vele milieuaspecten is een gedegen studie gedaan naar manieren om bij de booractiviteiten het gebied zo min mogelijk te verstoren.Geologisch gezien is de kans groot dat in Coronie olie wordt gevonden. Brunings benadrukt dat vanuit het oliemoedergesteente in het Guyanabekken twee tot drie migratiepaden naar het vasteland lopen. Een daarvan loopt naar Saramacca waar de olie al is gevonden en wordt geproduceerd.

Groot “Het exploratiegebied in Coronie is zó groot dat het Tambaredjoveld wel zes tot zeven keer tussen de vijf putten past die we gaan boren”, zegt Brunings. “Er zal voornamelijk in het zuiden worden geboord, waarbij de diepste put zo’n 850 meter is. De afstand tussen het basiskamp en de verste put is negentig kilometer.” Evaluatie van de data uit de putten vindt in 2011 plaats. Aan de hand hiervan kan het vervolgtraject bepaald worden, zoals het boren van nog meer exploratieputten of appraisalputten of wellicht de uitvoering van een seismisch programma. Deze appraisalputten moeten aantonen welk type olie er in een bepaald gebied zit, om welke hoeveelheid het gaat, op welke manier die naar de oppervlakte gepompt kan worden en hoe het verdere transport zal verlopen. Hieraan moet ook het financiële plaatje gekoppeld worden. Over het in productie brengen van deze twee nieuwe gebieden kan dus nog niet gesproken worden. “Wij hopen dat Coronie het district van melk, honing én olie wordt.”

Staatsolie’s challenge is to explore for untapped oil

reserves that will be added to its existing reserves.

Preparations for exploration drilling are therefore under-

way in Coronie and Nickerie.

‘It won’t be easy’, say August Nelson, Manager

Exploration with Staatsolie and Patrick Brunings, Manager

with Paradise Oil Company (POC), a Staatsolie subsid-

iary. There has been a slight delay in the Coronie and

Nickerie exploration programs, but there are good pros-

pects that the operation will run smoothly. Human, techni-

cal and natural factors have necessitated an adjustment

in the initial operations scheme. However, exploration drill-

ing will commence this month: five wells in Coronie and at

least ten in Nickerie.

Final frontier

Staatsolie geologists have already identified all proposed

drilling sites in Nickerie based on seismic data gathered in

2008. An impartial consultant is hired to conduct the envi-

ronment impact study. The consultant will focus primarily

on the water balance considering the rice cultivation in the

area. Contacts have been made with all the owners of the

land where the operations will take place. Their permis-

sion is needed to drill the wells, construct the roads and

transport crews and material on their land.

‘These are all challenges, for we’ll only go ahead when

we have a go on the environment study and the land-

owners have given a consent ’ blessing in writing’, says

Nelson. He calls Nickerie the final frontier for onshore

exploration because then the whole coastal area – from

the Cottica in the east to the Corantijn in the west – will

have been explored. ‘This is an area of roughly 10,000

square kilometers! And we’ve done that in a little more

than three years. For comparison: the Tambaredjo field is

roughly 150 sq. kilometers.’

Drilling will take place in southern Nickerie. The wells will have

depths varying between 700 and 1,500 meters. ‘Actually, little

is known about Nickerie, so we’re depending on the explora-

tion drilling to give us some insight on the geological structure

of the underground,’ says Nelson emphatically.

Optimistic

Operations in the western districts will cover some 2,500

sq. kilometers and will take some six to eight months.

Nelson is very optimistic. To enhance the effectiveness,

the area has been divided into three parts: the northern

swamp area, the central rice lands and the southern

swamp area. ‘All three areas require a different approach

and even a different type of drill. The Nickerie operations

are justifiably called the most ambitious program of the

exploration division, so far, and that only because of the

distances.’ To cut back on long traveling hours, an opera-

tion base will be set up in Nickerie. Crews and material

must be deployed as effectively as possible and the safety

aspect will be taken very strictly into account. ‘We have

very high hopes, but right now that’s not our main con-

cern. We want to get this project off the ground very much

and the findings will steer our next move. But we’ll see

soon enough’, says a very determined Nelson.

Coronie

POC and its partner Tullow Oil will be coordinating drill-

ing of the five wells in Coronie. ‘We have little geological

data on that area’, says Brunings. An analysis was made

of the Coronie swamp in 2007 and 2008 in order to

get an insight in the nature of the ground. Crews have

entered the area early this year to map the soil conditions.

‘Actually, we should already have drilled the first well,

but we’ve come across some technical and natural chal-

lenges. We’ve had some delay in constructing the access

roads to the well sites, since the vegetation and the soil

condition appeared to be different than was expected.’

Nine excavators

Initially, two excavators would be deployed, but to make up

arrears, now nine excavators will open up the area to the

well sites. Also, new civil engineering methods have been

applied. Preparations are underway to drill the five wells, for

which a contractor has been hired. More than 40 crews will

work around the clock in 8-hours shifts from base camp.

Coronie is a completely new challenge, because its

swamp differs much from those Staatsolie is used to in

Saramacca. The Coronie operations will therefore have to

be adjusted to the specific requirements for that area. The

various environment aspects have necessitated a thor-

ough study in order not to disturb the natural environment

during the drilling operations.

Geologically, the odds favor an oil strike in Coronie.

Brunings emphasizes that two to three migratory paths

lead from the oil rock bottom in the Guyana basin to the

main land, one of which leads to Saramacca, where oil

has already been struck and is being produced.

Outstretched

‘The exploration area in Coronie is so outstretched that

we could fit in the Tambaredjo field six to seven times

between the five wells we’re about to drill’, says Brunings.

‘Drilling will mainly take place to the south, with the deep-

est well at 850 meters. The distance between base camp

and the farthest well will be 90 kilometers.’

Data from the wells will be assessed in 2011 and the

results will determine the follow up, among which are

the drilling of more exploration wells or appraisal wells or

even conducting a seismic program. Appraisal wells

will have to prove what type of oil is found in a certain

area; the quantity, how it should be pumped up and

how further transport should take place. The finan-

cial consequences will also have to be determined.

Bringing these new areas in production is not an issue

right now. ‘But we do hope that Coronie will become

the district of Milk, Honey and Oil. ’

Deze mijlpaal is niet ongemerkt voor-

bij gegaan. Gedurende de tweede

helft van 2010 zijn er verschillende

activiteiten gehouden in verband

met de verjaardag. Het jubileum is

niet alleen voor en met het perso-

neel herdacht. Er is ook aandacht

geschonken aan kansarme kinderen

en seniorenburgers. Bij elk evene-

ment heeft de doelgroep met volle

teugen genoten. De Commissie

Viering Dertig Jaar Staatsolie mag

daarom terugkijken op een geslaagde

herdenking van het jubileum.

Na bijna zeven jaren van voorbereiding verkeert het Raffinaderij Expansie Project (REP) in de engineering-, procurement- en constructiefase. Ook nu is Staatsolie nauw betrokken bij het project.

After preparations that took almost seven years, the Staatsolie Refinery Expansion Project (REP) has landed in the engineering, procurement and construction phase. The company is still actively involved in the project.


Sinds augustus zijn twintig leden van het REP-team in Italië aan het werk. In Rome nemen zij met experts van de Italiaanse aannemer Saipem het basisont-

werp onder de loep. Samen werken zij de details uit van het basisontwerp van de raffinaderij. Ondertussen oriënteert Saipem zich in Suriname.

Verificatie“Tijdens de verificatie van het basisontwerp zijn duizenden tekeningen heel minutieus doorgekamd”, vertelt Senior Project Manager Tom Ketele. “Saipem neemt de constructie voor zijn rekening, maar wil er natuurlijk zeker van zijn dat er geen fouten in het ontwerp geslopen zijn.” Het basisontwerp omvat ook plot plans. “Die tonen het bovenaanzicht van de raffinaderij, met alle onderdelen op de juiste positie.” In het verificatieproces wordt het ontwerp beoordeeld door mensen die belast zijn met constructie, refining operations en safety, elk vanuit hun eigen discipline.

ZwaartepuntOok het inkoopproces (procurement) voor constructiematerialen is opgestart. Sommige materialen hebben een levertijd van wel twee jaar. Daarom is het belangrijk om bestellingen tijdig te plaatsen. Bepaalde delen van de raffinaderij worden in het buitenland gebouwd en in hun geheel naar Suriname getranspor-teerd. Uiteraard ligt het zwaartepunt van de constructie in Suriname. Saipem begint in april 2011 met het opzetten van onderkomens zoals kantoorgebouwen en kampenverblijven. In juli 2011 begint de bouw van de raffinaderij met het heien van de eerste paal. “We staan in de startblokken voor de uitvoering. Nu gaat het allemaal echt gebeuren”, bevestigt Ketele.

OriëntatieIn Suriname houden zo’n 25 teamleden zich bezig met andere delen van het project, zoals het opzetten een opslagplaats voor materialen en de bouw van een ruimte waar buitenlands constructiepersoneel kan verblijven gedurende het project. Bij de constructie van de raffinaderij worden zoveel mogelijk Surinaamse arbeiders ingezet.Saipem heeft zich in september in Suriname georiënteerd. Alle faciliteiten op en rond het bouwterrein zijn bezocht om technische informatie te verzamelen voor de uitvoering van het project. In december is ter voorbereiding van de start van de bouw een tweede oriëntatiebezoek gebracht.

Hecht teamAan het project werken nu 50 medewerkers van Staatsolie en 150 van Sai-pem. De REP-teamleden Anand Gajapersad, Lead Mechanical Engineer, en Narindra Baldew, Lead Electrical & Instrumentation Engineer, zijn in Rome bij Saipem gestationeerd. Eerder hebben zij al in Nederland bij ABB Lummus meegewerkt aan het basisontwerp van de raffinaderij. Zij zijn er inmiddels aan gewend om buiten Suriname te werken. “Waar je direct mee geconfron-teerd wordt, is de taalbarrière. Die begint al in de supermarkt als je bood-schappen gaat doen”, zegt Gajapersad lachend. “Ondanks het verschil in taal en cultuur, werken we prettig samen met de engineers van Saipem.” Het team maakt lange dagen en werkt soms ook in de weekends. “We zijn op elkaar aangewezen”, zegt Baldew. “Collega’s zijn net familie geworden. We doen bijna alles samen en vormen een hecht team.”

Refinery Expansion Project We Are Good to Go

After preparations that took almost seven years, the

Staatsolie Refinery Expansion Project (REP) has

landed in the engineering, procurement and construc-

tion phase. The company is still actively involved in

the project.

Since August, 20 members of the REP team have

been stationed in Italy. In Rome, REP team members

and experts from the Italian contractor Saipem are

conducting a close study of the basic design. Together

they analyze the details of the basic design of the

refinery. In the meantime, Saipem is on a fact-finding

mission in Suriname.

Verification

‘While verifying the basic design, thousands of con-

struction drawings were studied thoroughly’, says

Senior Project Manager Tom Ketele. ‘Saipem is in

charge of the construction, but they must have abso-

lute certainty that there are no flaws in the design.’ The

basic design also includes plot plans. ‘These show a

top view of the refinery, with all the segments in the

right position.’ During the verification process, the

design is assessed by people in charge of construc-

tion, refining operations and safety, each from their

respective field.

Heart

The procurement of construction material and equip-

ment has also been started. For some equipment there

is a waiting period of two years, which necessitates

placing the orders on time. Some segments of the

refinery will be constructed abroad and shipped to

Suriname in one piece. The heart of the construction

operation, however, is still in Suriname. Saipem will

start building offices and housing accommodations in

April 2011. The refinery construction will start in July

2011 when the first pile is driven into the ground. ‘We’re

good to go. This is serious business now’, says Ketele.

Fact-finding

In Suriname, 25 team members are studying other

parts of the project, including building storage sheds

for material and equipment and the construction of

housing accommodations for foreign construction

workers during the project. Local workers will be

hired as much as possible for the construction phase.

Saipem was on a fact-finding mission to Suriname in

September, touring all facilities in and around the con-

struction site to gather technical data in order to exe-

cute the project. In December, a second mission visited

Suriname to prepare the start of the construction.

Solid Team

Fifty Staatsolie employees and 150 from Saipem

are stationed in Rome at the Saipem offices. Before, they

had participated in the basic design at the ABB Lummus

offices in the Netherlands. They are now accustomed to

working abroad. ‘Language is the first barrier with which

you’re confronted. It starts when you go into a supermarket

to buy groceries’, Gajapersad says smiling. ‘But despite

our language and cultural differences, we have an excellent

working relationship with the Saipem engineers.’ The team

more than once burns the midnight oil and sometimes they

even work during the weekends. ‘We need each other’, says

Baldew. “Colleagues have become just like family. We do

almost all things together and we’re a solid team.’

De nieuwe RvC werd tijdens een Bijzondere Algemene Vergadering van Aan-deelhouders geïnstalleerd door Robert Ameerali, vicepresident van Suriname

en vertegenwoordiger van de aandeelhouder. De leden van de RvC zijn - naast president-commissaris Narpath Bissumbhar - Iwan Poerschke, Gonda Asadang, Archie Hilversum, Stanley Marica en Fred Kasantaroeno. Marica en Kasantaroeno maakten ook deel uit van de vorige RvC. Bij de installatie van de nieuwe raad dankte vicepresident Ameerali de afgetreden raad, onder leiding van Marica, voor de geleverde bijdrage aan de groei en ontwikkeling van Staatsolie.

Op 6 november bracht de nieuwe RvC een oriëntatiebezoek aan Staatsolie. Vergezeld van de directie namen de leden een kijkje bij de operaties in Saramacca en op Tout Lui Faut. Op de locaties maakten zij kennis met de divisiemanagers. In Saramacca gaf Algemeen Directeur Marc Waaldijk een presentatie over de ontwikkelingen bij Staatsolie. Glenn Sairras, Directeur Production & Development, gaf uitleg over de oliewinningsactiviteiten in Saramacca. Na de presentaties werd de RvC rondgeleid door het productieveld, de verwerkings- en opslagfaciliteiten. De zwampoperaties in het nieuwe Tambaredjo-Noordwestveld en het Calcuttaveld werden ook bezocht. Na de lunch werd Tout Lui Faut bezocht. Daar gaf Sam Murli, Onderdirecteur Refining & Marketing, een presentatie van de activiteiten op “zijn” locatie. Het Raffinaderij Expansie Project werd belicht door Ben Nuboer, Directeur Refining Expansion Project. Na de presentatie kreeg de RvC een rondleiding door de raffinaderij en de elektriciteitscentrale van Staatsolie. Na dit bezoek weten de nieuwe RvC-leden meer over de activiteiten van het bedrijf.

Staatsolie kreeg op 4 oktober een nieuwe Raad van Commissarissen (RvC). De raad telt zes leden en wordt

geleid door Narpath Bissumbhar.

New Supervisory Board

On 4 October a new Surpervisory Board was

installed at Staatsolie. The Board, chaired by

Narpath Bissumbhar, has six members.

Vice President Robert Ameerali installed the new

Board at a special General Shareholders meeting.

The Board consists of the following people: Iwan

Poerschke, Gonda Asadang, Archie Hilversum, Stanley

Marica and Fred Kasantaroeno. The latter two were

on the past Board. Vice President Ameerali extended

his gratitude to the past Board for their contribution in

Staatsolie’s growth and development.

The new Board visited Staatsolie on 6 November.

The management accompanied the Board to the oper-

ations at Saramacca and Tout Lui Faut, where they

met the division managers. In Saramacca, Managing

Director Marc Waaldijk held a presentation on the

developments at Staatsolie. Glenn Sairras, Director

Production & Development elaborated on the explora-

tion operations in Saramacca. After the presentations

the Board toured the production field, as well as the

processing and storage facilities. They also visited the

swamp operations in the new Tambaredjo North West

and the Calcutta fields.

After a lunch the party went to Tout Lui Faut where

Sam Murli, Deputy Director Refining & Marketing held a

presentation on the operations at the Refinery. Refinery

Expansion Project (REP) Director, Ben Nuboer, high-

lighted the REP. The party then toured the refinery and

the power plant. The Board is now better informed on

the Staatsolie operations.

Eenvoudig wordt het niet, menen August Nelson, Manager Exploration bij Staats-olie, en Patrick Brunings, manager van Paradise Oil Company (POC), een doch-

termaatschappij van Staatsolie. Het exploratieprogramma voor Coronie en Nickerie heeft enige vertraging opgelopen, maar er is goede hoop op een vlot vervolg. Door menselijke, technische en natuurlijke factoren moest het aanvankelijke schema worden aangepast. De exploratieboringen staan nu voor begin 2011 op schema: in Coronie gaat het om vijf putten en in Nickerie om zeker tien.

FinalfrontierGeologen van Staatsolie hebben alle boorlocaties in Nickerie geïdentificeerd op basis van seismische data die in 2008 zijn verzameld. Het milieugedeelte is toever-trouwd aan een onafhankelijke consultant die sterk zal focussen op de waterhuis-houding van het gebied tegen de achtergrond van de rijstbouw. Verder is contact opgenomen met de eigenaren van alle percelen waarop gewerkt zal worden. Hun toestemming is nodig voor de boring van putten, de aanleg van wegen en het ver-voer van personeel en materieel over hun terreinen. “Allemaal grote uitdagingen, want we starten pas nadat de bevindingen van de milieuconsultant goed zijn bevonden en de grondeigenaren per brief hun toestem-ming hebben verleend”, zegt Nelson. Hij noemt Nickerie de finalfrontier voor onshore exploratie: de hele kuststrook – van de Cotticarivier in het oosten tot de Corantijnrivier in het westen – zal zijn geëxploreerd. “Een gebied van ongeveer 10.000 vierkante kilometer! En dat allemaal in iets meer dan drie jaar. Ter vergelij-king: het Tambaredjoveld beslaat ongeveer 150 vierkante kilometer.” De boringen zullen voornamelijk in het zuiden van Nickerie plaatsvinden. De put-ten die worden geboord hebben dieptes tussen de 700 en 1500 meter. “In feite is er heel weinig bekend over Nickerie, daarom is het nodig dat de exploratieborin-gen meer informatie zullen verschaffen over de geologische samenstelling van de bodem”, onderstreept Nelson.

OptimistischDe operaties in het westen van het land, over een oppervlakte van zeker 2.500 vierkante kilometer, zullen tussen de zes en acht maanden duren. Nelson is opti-mistisch. Om de exploratieboringen in Nickerie zo effectief mogelijk uit te voeren, is het gebied in drieën verdeeld: het noordelijk zwampgebied, het centraal gelegen “rijstgebied” en het zuidelijk zwampgebied. “Alle drie gebieden vereisen een ver-schillende aanpak en zelfs een ander type boormachine. Het boorprogramma van Nickerie is met recht het meest ambitieuze programma van de exploratiedivisie tot nu toe, alleen al om de afstand.” Om te lange reistijden te voorkomen, zal worden gewerkt vanuit een operatiebasis in Nickerie. De bedoeling hiervan is dat mens en materieel effectief worden ingezet. Ook de veiligheid van de operatie wordt nauw-lettend bewaakt. “De verwachtingen zijn erg hooggespannen maar daar houden wij ons nu niet mee bezig. We willen dit project starten en heel graag ook. Aan de hand van de resultaten zal het vervolgtraject uitgestippeld worden. Butwewillseesoonenough!,” klinkt Nelson vastberaden.

Exploration Drilling Ahead in Coronie and Nickerie

Staatsolie’s challenge is to explore for untapped oil

reserves that will be added to its existing reserves.

Preparations for exploration drilling are therefore under-

way in Coronie and Nickerie.

‘It won’t be easy’, says August Nelson, Manager

Exploration with Staatsolie and Patrick Brunings, Manager

with Paradise Oil Company (POC), a Staatsolie subsid-

iary. There has been a slight delay in the Coronie and

Nickerie exploration programs, but there are good pros-

pects that the operation will run smoothly. Human, techni-

cal and natural factors have necessitated an adjustment

in the initial operations scheme. However, exploration

drilling will commence soon: five wells in Coronie and at

least ten in Nickerie.

Final frontier

Staatsolie geologists have already identified all proposed

drilling sites in Nickerie based on seismic data gathered in

2008. An impartial consultant is hired to conduct the envi-

ronment impact study. The consultant will focus primarily

on the water balance considering the rice cultivation in the

area. Contacts have been made with all the owners of the

land where the operations will take place. Their permis-

sion is needed to drill the wells, construct the roads and

transport crews and material on their land.

‘These are all challenges, for we’ll only go ahead when

we have a go on the environment study and the landown-

ers have given a consent ’ blessing in writing’, says

Nelson. He calls Nickerie the final frontier for onshore

exploration because then the whole coastal area –

from the Cottica in the east to the Corantijn in the west

– will have been explored. ‘This is an area of roughly

10,000 square kilometers! And we’ve done that in

a little more than three years. For comparison: the

Tambaredjo field is roughly 150 sq. kilometers.’

Drilling will take place in southern Nickerie. The wells will have

depths varying between 700 and 1,500 meters. ‘Actually, little

is known about Nickerie, so we’re depending on the explora-

tion drilling to give us some insight on the geological structure

of the underground,’ says Nelson emphatically.

Optimistic

Operations in the western districts will cover some 2,500

sq. kilometers and will take some six to eight months.

Nelson is very optimistic. To enhance the effectiveness,

the area has been divided into three parts: the northern

swamp area, the central rice lands and the southern

swamp area. ‘All three areas require a different approach

and even a different type of drill. The Nickerie operations

are justifiably called the most ambitious program of the

exploration division, so far, and that only because of the

CoronieDe boring van vijf putten in Coronie wordt gecoördineerd door POC en zijn part-ner Tullow Oil. “Er is heel weinig geologische informatie over dit gebied”, zegt Brunings. In 2007 en 2008 is een analyse gemaakt van de Coroniezwamp, om inzicht te krijgen in de terreingesteldheid. Begin dit jaar zijn medewerkers daadwer-kelijk het gebied ingegaan om de bodemgesteldheid in kaart te brengen. “In feite moest de eerste put al geboord zijn, maar we zijn op technische en natuurlijke uit-dagingen gestuit”, zegt Brunings. De geplande aanleg van toegangs- en afvoerwe-gen voor de putlocaties liep vertraging op, omdat de vegetatie en bodemgesteldheid in werkelijkheid anders bleken te zijn dan aanvankelijk was gedacht.

NegengraafmachinesHet was de bedoeling om met twee graafmachines te werken. Om de achterstand in te lopen zijn negen graafmachines ingezet om de toegang tot de putlocaties te maken. Ook zijn er nieuwe civieltechnische methoden toegepast. Inmiddels zijn alle voorbereidingen gaande om de vijf putten te boren. Voor deze opdracht is een contractor ingehuurd. Ruim veertig medewerkers zullen vanuit een basiskamp de 24 uursoperatie draaien in shifts van acht uren. Coronie is een compleet nieuwe uitdaging, omdat de zwamp daar in vele opzich-ten verschilt met die in Saramacca, waarmee Staatsolie ervaring heeft. De operaties in Coronie moesten dus afgestemd worden op de specifieke omstandigheden daar. Vanwege de vele milieuaspecten is een gedegen studie gedaan naar manieren om bij de booractiviteiten het gebied zo min mogelijk te verstoren.Geologisch gezien is de kans groot dat in Coronie olie wordt gevonden. Brunings benadrukt dat vanuit het oliemoedergesteente in het Guyanabekken twee tot drie migratiepaden naar het vasteland lopen. Een daarvan loopt naar Saramacca waar de olie al is gevonden en wordt geproduceerd.

Groot“Het exploratiegebied in Coronie is zó groot dat het Tambaredjoveld wel zes tot zeven keer tussen de vijf putten past die we gaan boren”, zegt Brunings. “Er zal voornamelijk in het zuiden worden geboord, waarbij de diepste put zo’n 850 meter is. De afstand tussen het basiskamp en de verste put is negentig kilometer.” Evaluatie van de data uit de putten vindt in 2011 plaats. Aan de hand hiervan kan het vervolgtraject bepaald worden, zoals het boren van nog meer exploratieputten of appraisalputten of wellicht de uitvoering van een seismisch programma. Deze appraisalputten moeten aantonen welk type olie er in een bepaald gebied zit, om welke hoeveelheid het gaat, op welke manier die naar de oppervlakte gepompt kan worden en hoe het verdere transport zal verlopen. Hieraan moet ook het financiële plaatje gekoppeld worden. Over het in productie brengen van deze twee nieuwe gebieden kan dus nog niet gesproken worden. “Wij hopen dat Coronie het district van melk, honing én olie wordt.”

tion base will be set up in Nickerie. Crews and material

must be deployed as effectively as possible and the safety

aspect will be taken very strictly into account. ‘We have

very high hopes, but right now that’s not our main con-

cern. We want to get this project off the ground very much

and the findings will steer our next move. But we’ll see

soon enough’, says a very determined Nelson.

Coronie

POC and its partner Tullow Oil will be coordinating drill-

ing of the five wells in Coronie. ‘We have little geological

data on that area’, says Brunings. An analysis was made

of the Coronie swamp in 2007 and 2008 in order to

get an insight in the nature of the ground. Crews have

entered the area early this year to map the soil conditions.

‘Actually, we should already have drilled the first well,

but we’ve come across some technical and natural chal-

lenges. We’ve had some delay in constructing the access

roads to the well sites, since the vegetation and the soil

condition appeared to be different than was expected.’

Nine excavators

Initially, two excavators would be deployed, but to make up

arrears, now nine excavators will open up the area to the

well sites. Also, new civil engineering methods have been

applied. Preparations are underway to drill the five wells, for

which a contractor has been hired. More than 40 crews will

work around the clock in 8-hours shifts from base camp.

Coronie is a completely new challenge, because its

swamp differs much from those Staatsolie is used to in

Saramacca. The Coronie operations will therefore have to

be adjusted to the specific requirements for that area. The

various environment aspects have necessitated a thor-

ough study in order not to disturb the natural environment

during the drilling operations.

Geologically, the odds favor an oil strike in Coronie.

Brunings emphasizes that two to three migratory paths

lead from the oil rock bottom in the Guyana basin to the

main land, one of which leads to Saramacca, where oil

has already been struck and is being produced.

Outstretched

‘The exploration area in Coronie is so outstretched that

we could fit in the Tambaredjo field six to seven times

between the five wells we’re about to drill’, says Brunings.

‘Drilling will mainly take place to the south, with the deep-

est well at 850 meters. The distance between base camp

and the farthest well will be 90 kilometers.’

Data from the wells will be assessed in 2011 and the

results will determine the follow up, among which are

the drilling of more exploration wells or appraisal wells or

even conducting a seismic program. Appraisal wells

will have to prove what type of oil is found in a certain

area; the quantity, how it should be pumped up and

how further transport should take place. The finan-

cial consequences will also have to be determined.

Bringing these new areas in production is not an issue

right now. ‘But we do hope that Coronie will become

the district of Milk, Honey and Oil.’

won hij met Kenneth Pickering (1998) en met Jane Harkisoen (2004).Staatsolie was dit jaar voor de tiende achtereenvolgende keer hoofdspon-sor van de Savanne Rally, die al 34 jaren door de Surinaamse Auto Rally Klub (SARK) wordt georganiseerd. Dit jaar deden negentig equipes mee uit Suriname, Trinidad & Tobago, Nederland, de Verenigde Staten en Frans- Guyana. Het evenement duurde van vrijdag 12 tot en met maandag 15 november. Fernandes Autohandel (Isuzu D-Max) en Haukes NV waren de co-sponsors.

Dit jaar bestreek de Staatsolie Diesel Savanne Rally voornamelijk gebieden in het oosten van Suriname. Vrijwel direct na de start op vrijdagavond 12 november werden de equipes richting Moengo gedirigeerd om daarna via Patamacca en het Mapanegebied bij de eerste overnachting (zaterdagmid-dag) te Blaka Watra neer te strijken. De volgende dag kregen de rijders vrij-wel het gehele Blaka Watragebied voorgeschoteld. De tweede overnachting was op Overbridge. Op de laatste dag werden de traditionele savannes aan-gedaan, zoals de Ottosavanne en de Y2K-savanne, waarna de deelnemers naar de finish koersten te Staatsolie Tout Lui Faut Operations.

Staatsolie Diesel Savannah Rally 2010

This year’s edition of the Staatsolie Diesel Savannah Rally was

won by Jerry Pocorni and Diego Chin A Sen. This team had a con-

stant record throughout the whole race and their night time record

stood out against those of the other teams.

Pocorni’s victory marks a personal record: this is the third time

he won the event, however, each time with a different partner. His

earlier victories were with Kenneth Pickering (1998) and Jane

Harkisoen (2004).

The Savannah Rally has been an annual event for the past 34

years, organized by the Surinaamse Auto Rally Klub (SARK), with

Staatsolie as main sponsor for the tenth consecutive time. Ninety

teams from Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, the Netherlands, the

USA and French Guiana arrived at the start. The event lasted from

Friday 12 through Monday 15 November. Fernandes Autohandel

(Isuzu D-Max) and Haukes Ltd were this year’s co-sponsors.

This year, the rally covered routes mainly in the eastern part of

Suriname. Almost immediately after the start the teams were

directed to Moengo, where they drove through Patamacca and

the Mapane area to Blaka Watra for the first stop for the night late

Saturday afternoon. The next course was through all of the Blaka

Watra area. Their second stop was at Overbridge. For the final day

the traditional Savannahs were on the menu, including the Otto

Savannah and the Y2K Savannah. After that the teams headed to

the finish at Staatsolie Tout Lui Faut Operations.

“Ik heb altijd prettig samengewerkt met een ieder”, blikt Murli terug op de afgelopen 21 jaren. “Ik heb mij nooit verveeld. Ik zeg ook tegen

collega’s dat als zij zich beginnen te vervelen bij Staatsolie, zij iets niet goed doen en dat het misschien tijd is voor een andere carrière.”

Hoe heeft u de afgelopen maanden ervaren?“Het is een nieuwe uitdaging. Druk, maar ook prettig. In mijn huidige positie ben ik verantwoordelijk voor een effectieve en efficiënte bedrijfsvoering van de divisies Refining Operations, Marketing en Staatsolie Power Company Suriname. Daarnaast neem ik regelmatig deel aan het directieoverleg: dus meedenken en meebepalen.”

Waarin verschilt voor u de functie van manager met die van Deputy Director?“Ik heb verantwoordelijkheden erbij gekregen. Bovendien geef ik nu op een ander niveau leiding, waarbij motiveren en ondersteunen belangrijker zijn dan puur leiding geven. Hoe hoger je komt in de organisatie, hoe afhankelijker je bent van mensen om het beleid uit te voeren. Dat vraagt dus om een goede motivatie. De wereld verandert, de markt stelt andere eisen. Er zijn steeds andere uitdagingen waarop je moet inspelen om de continuering van het bedrijf veilig te stellen. Bij Procurement was ik verantwoordelijk voor de uitgaven van Staatsolie, maar bij Marketing moet er geld worden binnengebracht.”

U bent ooit begonnen op Tout Lui Faut, ging daarna naar Saramacca en nu bent u terug op Tout Lui Faut. Is de cirkel rond?“Ik denk het wel. Tout Lui Faut is mijn beginbasis geweest bij Staatsolie, een thuisbasis. Als ik van hier weg ga, dan is dat met pensioen, naar huis.”

Wat ziet u als uw belangrijkste uitdaging? “De belangrijkste uitdaging voor mij is – afgezien van het onderhouden van mijn gezin – het realiseren van de doelstellingen zodat continuering van Staatsolie is gegarandeerd, zonder daarbij de normen van gezondheid, veiligheid en milieu op te geven. Volgens mij kan dit alleen worden bereikt door medewerkers te motiveren en hen de noodzaak van continuïteit voor te houden. De inzet van iedereen is vereist om binnen de tijdsplanning de doelen te realiseren die we hebben gesteld aan de hand van de Staatsolie Vision 2020. En zolang ik bij Staatsolie werk, zal ik mijn bijdrage leveren.”

‘I’ve Never Been Bored’

Samshoender “Sam” Murli (57) has been promoted to Deputy Director

Refining and Marketing as from 1 July. He entered service in 1989 and

has since been in several positions.

‘I’ve always maintained good relations with everyone’, says Murli on the

past 21 years. ‘I’ve never been bored. I tell colleagues that if they start

feeling bored at Staatsolie, then they must be doing something wrong,

and that it might be time to seek a new career.’

How have the past months been?

‘It’s a new challenge. It’s busy, but also pleasant. My current job puts

me in charge of effective and efficient management of the Refining

Operations and Marketing Divisions and the Staatsolie Power Company

Suriname. I also regularly participate in management meetings: so I’m

part of the game.’

Where is there a difference for you between a manager position and that

of Deputy Director?

‘I’ve new responsibilities added to my job. On top of

that I manage at a different level now, and motivating

and supporting have become far more important than

just managing. The higher you climb in a structure,

the more you become dependent on people to carry

out the policy. That requires good motivation. The

world is changing, there are tougher requirements.

There are continuously new challenges one has to

face to safeguard continuation of the company. At

Procurement I was in charge of Staatsolie’s expendi-

tures, but at Marketing I had to earn money.’

You started at Tout Lui Faut, went to Saramacca and

now your back again at Tout Lui Faut. Is the circle complete?

‘I think so. Tout Lui Faut has been my starting point at Staatsolie, a home

base. When I leave here, I’m retiring, I’m going home.’

What do you consider your most significant challenge?

‘The most significant challenge to me – apart from being there for

my family – is realizing objectives so as to guarantee continuation of

Staatsolie, without surrendering the health, safety and environment

standards. This can be achieved if we motivate employees and impress

upon them the necessity of continuation. Everybody’s effort is needed

to achieve goals within the time set based on the Staatsolie Vision 2020

plan. And as long as I work at Staatsolie, I will do my share.’

Sam Murli begon bij Staatsolie als Senior Mechanical Engineer. In 1992 gaf hij als Project Manager leiding aan de aanleg van de 55 kilometer lange pijpleiding van Saramacca naar Tout Lui Faut. Na voltooiing van de pijpleiding was Murli verantwoordelijk voor het Engineering Department als Chief Engineer. Vervolgens “stortte” hij zich op een groter project: de bouw van de raffinaderij. Murli was Project Engineering Manager tijdens de uitvoering van dit project. Vanaf de raffinaderij in bedrijf was (augustus 1997 tot november 2005), heeft Murli de leiding gehad over de raffinage-operaties als Manager Refining Operations. Van november 2005 tot januari 2008 was hij Manager Marke-ting en van 2008 tot 1 juli van dit jaar Manager Procurement. Sam Murli started as Senior Mechanical Engineer with the company. In 1992 he was Project Manager in charge of the construction of the 55 kilometers pipeline from Saramacca to Tout Lui Faut. After completion of that project, Murli was in charge of the Engineering Department as Chief Engineer. Then he took on a bigger project as Project Engineering Manager: the construction of the refinery. From August 1997, at the start of the refinery, through November 2005, Murli has been in charge of the refining operations as Manager Refining Operations. From November 2005 through January 2008 he was Manager Marketing and from 2008 to 1 July Manager Procurement.

Met Murphy Oil is in juni 2007 een Production Sharing Contract gesloten voor Blok 37, dat een oppervlakte heeft van onge-

veer 8700 vierkante kilometer. Deze maatschappij is op 8 november begonnen met het boren van twee exploratieputten in dit blok. Dit gebeurt met het boorplatform Atwood Beacon van de internationaledrillingcontractor Atwood Oceanics. Het boren van de eerste put, de Caracara 1, zal veertig dagen duren. Voor het boren van de tweede put, de Aracari 1, zijn dertig dagen uitgetrokken. De putten liggen in waterdieptes variërend van 50 tot 250 meter. De initiële informatie van de boringen is direct bekend, maar de analyse en evaluatie van de boorresulta-ten gaan enkele maanden duren.Begin 2011 is er een explora-tieboring gepland in blok 31, waar Inpex de Aitkanti zal boren. Het contract voor dit blok sloot Staatsolie in 2005 aanvankelijk met Maersk Oil. In 2007 nam de Japanse maatschappij Inpex de belangen van Maersk Oil vol-ledig over.

In Blok 30 heeft Repsol YPF het minimumexploratieprogramma volledig afgewerkt. In april 2008 heeft de onderneming daar de West Tapir 1 geboord: de eerste offshoreput in Suriname in 22 jaren! Helaas zijn er in deze put geen winbare hoeveelheden

Operations in Offshore Suriname

Staatsolie has signed Production Sharing Contracts (PSCs)

with four foreign companies for offshore blocks. All opera-

tions in the blocks are at present in the exploration phase.

In June 2007, the company signed a PSC with Murphy Oil

for Block 37. The block extends some 8,700 sq kilometers.

Murphy Oil started drilling two exploration wells on

8 November, using the Atwood Beacon, a rig belonging to

the international drilling contractor Atwood Oceanics. Drilling

the first well, the Caracara 1 will take 40 days, while 30 days

have been scheduled for the second well, the Aracari 1.

The wells lie in depths varying from 50 to 250 meters. Initial

data on the drilling will be available immediately, but analysis

and evaluation of the results will take a few months.

Exploration drilling in Block 31 is planned for early 2011,

when Inpex will drill the Aitkanti well. Staatsolie initially signed

the deal for this project with Maersk Oil in 2005. However, in

2007, the Japanese Inpex, took over all Maersk Oil interests.

Repsol YPF has completely concluded a minimum explora-

tion project in Block 30. In April 2008 the West Tapir 1 was

drilled; rendering it the first offshore well in 22 years in

Suriname! Unfortunately, no recoverable find of hydrocar-

bons (oil/gas) was made. Staatsolie’s PSC with Repsol YPF

dates back to 2005.

Sedert september 2010 is de Brits-Ierse maatschappij Tullow Oil actief offshore Suriname. Met Tullow Oil heeft Staatsolie een Production Sharing Contract voor Blok 47, 260 kilometer verwijderd van de kust. Dit blok, met een oppervlakte van 2369 vierkante kilometer, heeft waterdieptes tussen de 1500 tot 3000 meter. Tullow Oil zal in 2011 via 3D-seismisch onderzoek data verzamelen over een gebied van 2000 vierkante kilometer. In Suriname is Tullow al actief vanwege zijn samenwerkingsverband met Paradise Oil Company, een dochteronderneming van Staatsolie, bij de exploratie van de onshoreblokken Uitkijk en Coronie.

Een blik op de offshorekaart leert dat er nog een aantal blokken beschik-baar is voor geïnteresseerde buitenlandse maatschappijen. Sedert decem-ber 2009 zijn de Blokken 43, 44, 45, 46, 47 en 48 beschikbaar via directe onderhandelingen met geïnteresseerde maatschappijen. Deze blokken zijn in december 2009 tijdens Energy Caribbean Conference voor het eerst onder de aandacht gebracht van de industrie. Sinds augustus 2010 worden deze blokken ook via de website van Staatsolie (www.staatsolie.com/pio) gepromoot. Er is belangstelling voor de blokken en er zijn onderhandelingen geweest met geïnteresseerde bedrijven. Deze onderhandelingen hebben reeds geleid tot de PSC die in september 2010 met Tullow is gesloten. Het streven is erop gericht contracten af te sluiten, zodat de aannames over de geologische structuur van vooral de blokken 45, 46 en 48 verder bestudeerd kunnen worden.

The British-Irish company, Tullow Oil, started its operations in

offshore Suriname in September 2010. The foreign company has

a PSC for Block 47, situated at 260 kilometers off the coast. This

block extends 2,369 sq. kilometers, with water depths varying from

1,500 to 3,000 meters. In 2011, Tullow Oil will conduct a 3D-seismic

survey in a 2,000 sq. kilometers wide area to collect data. The com-

pany is already operational in Suriname since it has a joint-venture

agreement with Paradise Oil Company, a Staatsolie subsidiary, for

the exploration of the Uitkijk and Coronie onshore blocks.

The offshore map reveals several blocks still available for interested

foreign parties. The Blocks 43 through 48 have been available

since December 2009 for direct negotiations with interested par-

ties. These blocks were presented for the first time to players in the

international oil industry at the Energy Caribbean Conference held

in December 2009. Since August 2010 the blocks are showcased

on Staatsolie’s website (www.staatsolie.com/pio).

There are interested parties and negotiations have been waged.

The first yield was a PSC with Tullow Oil in September 2010. The

objective is to sign contracts which will help to unlock and study

the geological structure of mainly Blocks 45, 46 and 48.

Sinds augustus zijn twintig leden van het REP-team in Italië aan het werk. In Rome nemen zij met experts van de Italiaanse aannemer Saipem het basisont-

werp onder de loep. Samen werken zij de details uit van het basisontwerp van de raffinaderij. Ondertussen oriënteert Saipem zich in Suriname.

Verificatie“Tijdens de verificatie van het basisontwerp zijn duizenden tekeningen heel minutieus doorgekamd”, vertelt Senior Project Manager Tom Ketele. “Saipem neemt de constructie voor zijn rekening, maar wil er natuurlijk zeker van zijn dat er geen fouten in het ontwerp geslopen zijn.” Het basisontwerp omvat ook plotplans. “Die tonen het bovenaanzicht van de raffinaderij, met alle onderdelen op de juiste positie.” In het verificatieproces wordt het ontwerp beoordeeld door mensen die belast zijn met constructie, refiningoperations en safety, elk vanuit hun eigen discipline.

ZwaartepuntOok het inkoopproces (procurement) voor constructiematerialen is opgestart. Sommige materialen hebben een levertijd van wel twee jaar. Daarom is het belangrijk om bestellingen tijdig te plaatsen. Bepaalde delen van de raffinaderij worden in het buitenland gebouwd en in hun geheel naar Suriname getranspor-teerd. Uiteraard ligt het zwaartepunt van de constructie in Suriname. Saipem begint in april 2011 met het opzetten van onderkomens zoals kantoorgebouwen en kampenverblijven. In juli 2011 begint de bouw van de raffinaderij met het heien van de eerste paal. “We staan in de startblokken voor de uitvoering. Nu gaat het allemaal echt gebeuren”, bevestigt Ketele.

OriëntatieIn Suriname houden zo’n 25 teamleden zich bezig met andere delen van het project, zoals het opzetten een opslagplaats voor materialen en de bouw van een ruimte waar buitenlands constructiepersoneel kan verblijven gedurende het project. Bij de constructie van de raffinaderij worden zoveel mogelijk Surinaamse arbeiders ingezet.Saipem heeft zich in september in Suriname georiënteerd. Alle faciliteiten op en rond het bouwterrein zijn bezocht om technische informatie te verzamelen voor de uitvoering van het project. In december is ter voorbereiding van de start van de bouw een tweede oriëntatiebezoek gebracht.

Refinery Expansion Project We Are Good to Go

After preparations that took almost seven years, the

Staatsolie Refinery Expansion Project (REP) has

landed in the engineering, procurement and construc-

tion phase. The company is still actively involved in

the project.

Since August, 20 members of the REP team have

been stationed in Italy. In Rome, REP team members

and experts from the Italian contractor Saipem are

conducting a close study of the basic design. Together

they analyze the details of the basic design of the

refinery. In the meantime, Saipem is on a fact-finding

mission in Suriname.

Verification

‘While verifying the basic design, thousands of con-

struction drawings were studied thoroughly’, says

Senior Project Manager Tom Ketele. ‘Saipem is in

charge of the construction, but they must have abso-

lute certainty that there are no flaws in the design.’ The

basic design also includes plot plans. ‘These show a

top view of the refinery, with all the segments in the

right position.’ During the verification process, the

design is assessed by people in charge of construc-

tion, refining operations and safety, each from their

respective field.

Heart

The procurement of construction material and equip-

ment has also been started. For some equipment there

is a waiting period of two years, which necessitates

placing the orders on time. Some segments of the

refinery will be constructed abroad and shipped to

Suriname in one piece. The heart of the construction

operation, however, is still in Suriname. Saipem will

start building offices and housing accommodations in

April 2011. The refinery construction will start in July

2011 when the first pile is driven into the ground. ‘We’re

good to go. This is serious business now’, says Ketele.

Fact-finding

In Suriname, 25 team members are studying other

parts of the project, including building storage sheds

for material and equipment and the construction of

housing accommodations for foreign construction

workers during the project. Local workers will be

hired as much as possible for the construction phase.

Saipem was on a fact-finding mission to Suriname in

September, touring all facilities in and around the con-

struction site to gather technical data in order to exe-

cute the project. In December, a second mission visited

Suriname to prepare the start of the construction.

Eerder hebben zij al in Nederland bij ABB Lummus meegewerkt aan het basisontwerp van de raffinaderij. Zij zijn er inmiddels aan gewend om buiten Suriname te werken. “Waar je direct mee geconfron-teerd wordt, is de taalbarrière. Die begint al in de supermarkt als je bood-schappen gaat doen”, zegt Gajapersad lachend. “Ondanks het verschil in taal en cultuur, werken we prettig samen met de engineers van Saipem.” Het team maakt lange dagen en werkt soms ook in de weekends. “We zijn op elkaar aangewezen”, zegt Baldew. “Collega’s zijn net familie geworden. We doen bijna alles samen en vormen een hecht team.”

had participated in the basic design at the ABB Lummus

offices in the Netherlands. They are now accustomed to

working abroad. ‘Language is the first barrier with which

you’re confronted. It starts when you go into a supermarket

to buy groceries’, Gajapersad says smiling. ‘But despite

our language and cultural differences, we have an excellent

working relationship with the Saipem engineers.’ The team

more than once burns the midnight oil and sometimes they

even work during the weekends. ‘We need each other’, says

Baldew. “Colleagues have become just like family. We do

almost all things together and we’re a solid team.’

EigenkunnenSherida is steeds blijven geloven in haar eigen kunnen. “Ik was 19 toen ik als vakantiejobber bij Staatsolie kwam werken. Na een paar jaar werd ik als contractor aangenomen en in 2008 kwam ik in vaste dienst. De afgelopen elf jaar heb ik veel geleerd en meegemaakt. Had ik niet gebouwd op mijn eigen kunnen, dan was ik ook niet zover gekomen.” Sevora zegt dat “zelf doen” de belangrijkste voorwaarde is om vooruit te komen. “Je kunt er niet op vertrouwen dat anderen het voor je zullen doen.” Jürgen heeft zich “van niets naar iets” opgewerkt - net als Staatsolie. “Je moet een doel voor ogen hebben en je kansen grijpen”, zegt hij. “Met geloof en vertrouwen in eigen kunnen ben ik op weg naar mijn top.”

DuurzaamheidBij duurzaamheid gaat het volgens Sherida om de lange termijn. “Denken aan de toekomst, behouden wat je hebt om er langer van te kunnen genieten.” Zij wijst erop dat Staatsolie niet voorbij gaat aan haar verantwoordelijkheid tegenover de samenleving en zorg voor het milieu. “Via mijn functie probeer ik daaraan inhoud te geven.” Jürgen past de duurzaamheidsgedachte toe in zijn eigen leven. “Je mag nog zoveel verdienen, maar als je er niet duurzaam mee omgaat is het zo weg. Ik ben nu bezig mijn huis te bouwen. Mijn kinderen leer ik zuinig om te gaan met wat ze hebben. Ik maak ze ook bewust van het belang van een leefbaar milieu en hoe wij allen daaraan een bijdrage kunnen leveren, voor nu en de toekomst.” Sevora meent dat elk individu op een duurzame manier moet werken aan zijn vooruitgang. “Rekening houden met de medemens en het milieu en aan de toekomst denken.”

TransparantieBij transparantie (een van de kernwaarden van Staatsolie) denkt Sherida aan openheid en eerlijkheid in alle facetten van het leven, tegenover familie, vrienden en collega’s. Vertrouwen en transparantie gaan samen, zegt zij. “Je mag nog zo eerlijk zijn, één kleine leugen kan het voor altijd verpesten.” Jürgen noemt

The Thirty-year-olds Passion is Our Motivation

Sherida Asinga, Jürgen Wagimin and Sevora Bergwijn are

each in different stages of their careers. They draw inspira-

tion for their own growth from the developments at Staatsolie.

These thirty-year-olds discuss their own abilities, sustainability,

transparency and passion.

Own Abilities

Sherida kept believing in her own abilities. ‘I was 19 when I had

a summer job at Staatsolie. After a few years I was hired as

a contractor and in 2008 I got a permanent appointment. I’ve

learned and experienced much in the past 11 years. If I hadn’t

trusted in my own abilities I wouldn’t have gotten this far.’

To Sevora ‘doing it on your own’ is the most significant condi-

tion for progress. ‘You just can’t trust others to do it for you.’

Jurgen has, just like Staatsolie, started from scratch. ‘You must

set a goal and grab opportunities’, he says. ‘I’m on my way to

the top, propelled by faith and confidence in my own abilities.’

Sustainability

To Sherida sustainability has to do with long-term thinking.

‘Thinking about the future, retain all that you already have in

order to enjoy it longer.’ She points out that Staatsolie does

not neglect its responsibility towards society and care for the

environment. ‘In my position I try to take care of this.’ Jurgen

applies the sustainability aspect in his own life. ‘However big

your salary may be, if you cannot manage it in a sustainable

manner it will be gone swiftly. Right now I’m building a house.

I teach my children not to waste the things they have. I also

make them aware of the importance of a livable environment

and how we could all contribute to maintaining this, for now

and the future.’ Sevora thinks that every individual should build

his future in a sustainable way. ‘One should always take his

fellow man and the environment into consideration and think

about the future.’

Transparancy

To Sherida, transparency (one of the core values of Staatsolie)

means frankness and fairness in all aspects of life; to your

family, friends and colleagues. Confidence and transparency

always go together’, says she. However honest you think you

are one lie could have your whole life come crashing down.’ To

Jürgen transparency is a prerequisite to good teamwork. ‘One

should always try to act in all conscience. That way you will

avoid trouble for yourself and for others.’ Sevora agrees with

him. ‘Frank and fair communication in the work place is a con-

dition for good performance. This also holds good for project

teams. If there is no transparency projects stall and nothing

is achieved. The consequences for the company are that

objectives will not be met on time. In fact, everything one does

should be transparent. This should also be the case at home.’

Passion

‘Passion is our motivation’, says Sevora. ‘I’ve experienced

this during my studies. And when, at times, I was at a loss,

I was incited by people around me to keep on going.’ Sherida

firmly believes that goals set can be achieved through pas-

sion. Next to her job she is studying for a higher vocational

degree. ‘I get the incentive to go on, because people use my

knowledge and my talents. Staatsolie has ample challenges

to get the best out of me.’ Jürgen uses every opportunity to

advance. He is currently studying for duties in the new refin-

ery. He combines studying with working and taking care of

his family. ‘It’s not easy, but I take on the challenge, because

I’m passionately involved.'

Gedrevenheid“Gedrevenheid is de motor die je voortstuwt”, zegt Sevora. “Ik heb dat tijdens mijn studie ervaren. En als er soms momenten waren dat ik het even niet zag zitten, kreeg ik een duwtje in de rug van mensen om mij heen om door te gaan.” Sherida gelooft dat gestelde doelen door gedrevenheid gerealiseerd kunnen worden. Zij doet naast haar werk een hbo-studie. “Dat er van mijn kennis en talenten gebruik wordt gemaakt, geeft mij de drive om door te gaan. Bij Staatsolie zijn er genoeg uitdagingen om het beste uit mezelf te halen.” Jürgen maakt gebruik van elke mogelijkheid om vooruit te komen. Hij is nu bezig met opleidingen die hem moeten klaarstomen voor werkzaamheden in de nieuwe raffinaderij. De studies combineert hij met zijn werk en gezin. “Het is zwaar, maar ik ga ervoor, omdat ik de gedrevenheid heb.”

Bouterse was als regeringsleider in 1980 medeondertekenaar van het Decreet E-8 betreffende de conces-sieovereenkomst aan Staatsolie, waarmee de oprichting van het bedrijf gestalte kreeg. Waaldijk dankte naast de eerste directeur, Eddy Jharap, en de eerste president-commis-saris, Hugo Coleridge, ook gepensioneerde medewerkers enstonfutu’s die nog in dienst zijn. “Zij staan allen symbool voor een life-longcommitment.”

Na de toespraak volgde een wervelende show waarin talentvolle artiesten optraden. Sommige van de artiesten zijn al dertig jaar bezig, andere zijn in hun ontwikkelingsfase, terwijl de jonge talenten net beginnen te proeven van de uitdagingen van een carrière in de showwereld. Allemaal Surinamers die zich, met vertrouwen in eigen kunnen, van hun beste zijde hebben laten zien. Het publiek was zeer te spreken over de kwalitatief hoogstaande show, die was neergezet door NN Productions van Nydia Breeveld. Op de pagina’s 16 en 17 een fotoverslag van de avond.

Unflagging Efforts for Growth and Development

Staatsolie celebrated its 30th anniversary on

11 December with a reception and a marvelous show in

the Anthony Nesty Sports Stadium. Managing director

Marc Waaldijk looked back on the past 30 years.

Thirty years are a very long period in the existence of

a company and the more in a human life. The central

theme in the past 30 years was continuity in develop-

ment.’ Waaldijk mentioned incumbent president Bouterse’s

contribution to the establishment of the company. Back in

1980, Bouterse, then head of government, was co-signer

of Decree E-8, involving Staatsolie’s license agreement,

in fact establishing the company. Waaldijk expressed his

gratitude to the first managing director, Eddy Jharap, the

first chairman of the board, Hugo Coleridge, in addition

to retired employees and all devoted others who are still

employed by the company. ‘They are all symbolic for a

lifelong commitment.’

‘Ever since its establishment, Staatsolie has taken every

opportunity to lift management to a higher level and to

produce increasingly better results. Successive govern-

ments have given us the opportunity and support to

make this possible. Our business relations have also

lend their confidence. Staatsolie employees have given

meaning to our slogan ‘Confidence in Our Own Abilities’.

The SWOS, our worker’s association, has made a vigor-

ous contribution to the development of the company. In

the past 30 years, Staatsolie employees have worked

together creatively, created their talents and have labored

motivated and effortlessly for growth and development of

our company. But especially the sympathy and support of

our society, which cherishes Staatsolie and keeps it dear

as the pride of our nation, have made a significant contri-

bution to the company’s achievements. All this allows us

to proudly celebrate our jubilee.’

‘We want to make Staatsolie stronger. In our Vision 2020

we have included very ambitious objectives. With those

we want to transform Staatsolie into a solid organization

and contribute to making Suriname an affluent country.

But we cannot do that on our own. For realizing these

goals we desperately need your encouragement and

unconditional support.’

After the speech, talented entertainers presented a

spectacular show. Some of the entertainers have been

in the business for 30 years already, others are in their

developmental stage while the younger ones are barely

starting to taste the challenges that come with a showbiz

career. Together they are all Surinamers who, with con-

fidence in their own abilities, have presented their most

spectacular show. The audience was all praises for the

high quality performances, produced by Nydia Breeveld’s

NN Productions. There is a photo report of the evening

Dat zei een van de bijna 400 genodigden op de Staatsolie-seniorendag, een festijn in verband met het

dertigjarig jubileum van de onderneming.

Treat Day Fun by the River

‘We’ve come to be pampered. And that’s exactly what

Staatsolie did: this is a real treat day’, said one of the

almost 400 guests about the Staatsolie senior citizens’

day. The event was held to celebrate Staatsolie’s 30th

anniversary.

With this event Staatsolie wanted to express its gratitude

to retired employees and other senior citizens. The senior

citizens’ day started with singing in the Le Jardin resort

on the Suriname River, some forty kilometers south of

Paramaribo. Senior citizens from the Kibri Mi Home for

the Elderly paid tribute to Staatsolie with self-made

music instruments.

The arts and crafts corner was very busy, with guests

decorating slippers, caps and pies. Old friends who had

not met in years were chewing the fat. But there was

much more. While a magician magically turned a SRD 5

bill into a SRD 100 bill, the manicuring ladies were busy

painting scores of nails. ‘Do you know how hard these

hands have worked? It’s the first time they’re being pam-

pered like this!,’ was one of the reactions.

Later that day, the dance floor was alive with the partying

guests. In the back, Staatsolie retiree Erneste Parmanand

was moving his head and feet to the beat. ‘We’ve met old

friends and colleagues again, we’ve chatted and danced,

eaten and drank. I’m so happy with this day.’

Met dit evenement heeft Staatsolie haar dankbaarheid getoond aan gepen-sioneerde medewerkers en andere seniorenburgers. In ontspanningsoord

Le Jardin aan de Surinamerivier, zo’n veertig kilometer ten zuiden van Parama-ribo, begon de seniorendag met zang. De bewoners van bejaardentehuis Kibri Mi brachten hun “Ode aan Staatsolie” met zelfgemaakte instrumenten.

Populair bleek de knutselhoek, waar de gasten slippers, petten, truitjes en taar-ten konden decoreren. Oude vriendinnen die elkaar jaren niet hadden gezien kwamen elkaar tegen en praatten gezellig bij. Er was nog meer te doen. Terwijl een goochelaar een biljet van SRD 5 veranderde in een briefje van 100, waren de medewerksters van de manicureafdeling druk bezig tientallen nagels mooi te lakken. “Weet je hoe hard deze handen hebben gewerkt? Voor het eerst wor-den ze zo verwend!”, was een van de reacties.

Later in de middag vulde de dansvloer zich met feestende gasten. Achterin de danszaal bewoog Staatsolie-gepensioneerde Erneste Parmanand met zijn hoofd en benen mee op de maat. “We hebben oude vrienden en collega’s terugge-zien, we hebben flink gebabbeld en gedanst, gegeten en gedronken. Ik ben blij met deze dag.”

Op 5 december is het 30-jarig jubileum van Staatsolie gevierd met de seniorenburgers van Saramacca, het district waar de olie-velden zich bevinden. Op het terrein van de St. Thaddeusschool te Groningen zijn de ouderen de hele dag met verschillende activiteiten bezig gehouden. Wim Dwarkasing, Deputy Director Exploration & Petroleum Contracts, zei dat met deze speciale dag Staatsolie met deze speciale dag iets terug wil doen voor Saramacca, in het bijzonder de seniorenburgers, omdat zij jaren-lang hard hebben gewerkt en een bijdrage hebben geleverd aan de bloei van het district. Anneke van Gom en Patricia White, leerkrachten op de St. Thaddeusschool, organiseren al vier jaren in december een seniorendag. Dit jaar heeft Staatsolie vanwege haar dertigjarig jubileum deze geadopteerd.

Senior Citizens’ Day in Saramacca

Staatsolie celebrated its 30th anniversary on 5 December with senior citizens in

Saramacca, the district of its main operations. Senior citizens were treated to a vari-

ety of entertainment on the grounds of the St. Thaddeus school in Groningen. Wim

Dwarkasing, Deputy Director Exploration & Petroleum Contracts, said that the special

day was Staatsolie’s way for giving something back to Saramacca. The company

chose senior citizens because they have worked long and hard for the district to

flourish. Anneke van Gom and Patricia White, teachers at the St. Thaddeus School,

have been organizing the senior citizens’ day for the past 4 years. Staatsolie adopted

the program this year.

Children’s museum Villa Zapakara. The children participated in

various events, including the Ghana Tour and handicraft. They

also watched a movie. By the end of the day, the children were

taken to McDonald’s for a happy meal with its accompanying gift.

school supplies and sweets at home.

Voor leerlingen van enkele scholen van het speciaal onderwijs werd een sportdag georganiseerd. Onder begeleiding deden ze verschillende spelletjes. Ze werden ook verwend met lekker eten en drinken. De kinderen hebben genoten van de spelletjes. Ze vonden het een “heel leuke dag”.

De Staatsolie familyday stond dit jaar in het teken van het der-tigjarig jubileum van Staatsolie. En wie het even was vergeten, werd er aan herinnerd via de teksten op de ballonnen in vele kinderhanden. De familyday is op 1 augustus in het recreatie-oord Colakreek gehouden. Ruim 3500 medewerkers en con-tractors, met gezin, hebben meegedaan aan dit evenement.

Behalve de negentien “pioniers” werden nog zes andere collega’s in het zonnetje gezet: drie jubilarissen die hun 12½-jarig dienstverband vier-

den en drie andere medewerkers die met pensioen gingen. Doorzettingsvermogen, geloof en het vertrouwen om samen olie te zullen vinden en winstgevend te produceren, motiveerden de mannen van het eerste uur, al waren de omstandigheden vaak niet ideaal. Een deel van de jubilaris-sen is op de boormachine begonnen en heeft letterlijk de olie uit de grond zien komen. Toen deze groep in 1985 in dienst kwam, bedroeg de productie 500 vaten per dag. De huidige productie bedraagt 16.000 vaten per dag.De groep met 12½ dienstjaren kwam in 1998 in dienst, toen was de pro-ductie 8.000 vaten per dag en was de Staatsolie Raffinaderij ongeveer een jaar in bedrijf.

De jubilarissen en gepensioneerden hebben zichzelf en het bedrijf verder ont-wikkeld, zei Lloyd Read, voorzitter van de Staatsolie Werknemers Organisatie Suriname. “Wat we de afgelopen jaren samen hebben opgebouwd, verdwijnt niet.” Wederzijds respect, gelijke ontplooiingskansen en het creëren van een prettige werkomgeving, hebben het bedrijf gemaakt tot wat het nu is. “Een duidelijk samenspel tussen kapitaal, arbeid en de overheid.”

Algemeen Directeur Marc Waaldijk was vol lof over de inzet van de jubila-rissen. Dat de uitgangspositie bij het in dienst komen van de jubilarissen en gepensioneerden verschillend waren, doet geen afbreuk aan hun verdien-sten “Mede door uw inspanningen is ons bedrijf gegroeid. Maar we zijn er nog niet. Om onze ambities en strategische doelen te realiseren zullen nog hogere eisen worden gesteld aan onze organisatie, operaties en personeel.

Op 24 november huldigde Staatsolie negentien medewerkers met 25 dienstjaren. Deze groep kwam in 1985 in dienst en heeft de basis helpen leggen voor een bloeiende aardoliesector in Suriname.

Pioneers Created a Solid Foundation for Staatsolie

On 24 November Staatsolie honored nineteen employees for 25

years of loyal service. This group of employees entered service in

1985 and has helped create a solid foundation for a thriving petro-

leum industry in Suriname.

Next to the 19 jubilees there were six other honorees: three for

12½ years of loyal service and three retirees. Drive, faith and con-

fidence, that together they would strike oil and produce it profitably,

has inspired the pioneering employees, despite the less favorable

circumstances back then. Some of the jubilees started on the rig

and have literally witnessed oil coming out of the ground. When

this group started with the company in 1985 the production level

was at 500 barrels a day. Current production is at 16,000 barrels a

day. The group with 12½ years of loyal services entered service in

1998, when production was at 8,000 barrels a day. Back then; the

refinery was already a year and a half operational.

‘These jubilees and retirees have further developed themselves

and the company,’ said Lloyd Read, chairman of the Staatsolie

Workers Association Suriname. ‘That which we have built in the

past years, will not dissipate.’ Mutual respect, equal career oppor-

tunities and creation of a comfortable working environment, have

made the company into what it is now. ‘This is a clear example of a

solid cooperation between capital, labor and the government.’

Managing Director, Marc Waaldijk, was all praises for the jubilees’

achievements. It does not matter that these people had different

starting points when they entered the company. ‘Your efforts have

added to the growth of our company. But we haven’t reached our

goal yet. In order to realize our ambitions and strategic objectives,

our organization, operations and employees will be subjected to

even stricter requirements. Staatsolie wants to continue distinguish-

ing itself as a top firm by significantly contributing to the sustain-

able development of Suriname.

Narpath Bissumbhar, the new chairman of the Supervisory Board,

emphasized the sound cooperation between the board, the man-

agement and the union in order to help Staatsolie grow. ‘Continue

doing what you’re doing.’

After the speeches the jubilees were honored separately. The

evening was spiced up with entertainment by dancers of the Soeki

Irodikromo Community College for Art and Culture. ‘The Regionals’

covered the music. The guests enjoyed the food.

Na de toespraken werden de jubilarissen een voor een gehuldigd. Tussen de bedrijven door waren er optredens van de dansgroep van de Soeki Irodikromo Volksacademie voor Kunst & Cultuur. ‘The Regionals’ verzorgde de muziek. Het buffet na de huldiging smaakte iedereen uitstekend.

Petrobrashuurt20boorplatformenindekomendetweejaarHet Braziliaans staatsolie- en gasbedrijf Petrobras zal twintig boorplat-formen huren. Deze worden in de komende twee jaar ingezet om de exploratie- en productiecapaciteit van Petrobras te vergroten. “Momen-teel hebben wij veertien nieuwe boorplatformen in gebruik en tegen 2012 zullen daar nog eens twintig bijkomen”, zegt Sergio Gabrielli, president van Petrobras. In de komende vijf jaren zal Petrobas US$ 40 miljard bijeenbrengen uit bankleningen en verkoop van obligaties. Ook moet het bedrijf een schuld van US$ 38 miljard herfinancieren. Gabrielli verwacht dat de gemiddelde olieprijs tot aan 2015 tussen de US$ 65 en US$ 85 per vat zal bedragen. Met deze prijs zal Petrobras genoeg inkomsten hebben om de uitgaven te financieren. Petrobras is van plan in de komende vijf jaar US$ 224 miljard te investeren in verkoop en raffinage. Het bedrijf is van plan in 2011 haar investeringsplannen te herzien. Petrobras Leases 20 New Drilling Rigs in Next two Years

Brazil’s government managed oil and gas corporation Petrobras

announced it leased 20 foreign drilling rigs that will start operating

in the next two years as it seeks to boost its capacity to explore

for and produce oil. ‘We have 14 new rigs in operation now, and

will have 20 more by 2012’, says Chief Executive Officer Sergio

Gabrielli. The rigs are under contract for seven years. Petrobras

will meet its target to double production in the next decade as it

expands its drilling fleet. Gabrielli said that the corporation plans

to raise US$ 40 billion in the next five years through bank loans

and bond sales. Petrobras also needs to refinance US$ 38 billion

in debt. Gabrielli expects oil prices to average US$ 65 a barrel

to US$ 85 US dollars a barrel through 2015, helping to finance

spending. Petrobras plans to invest 224 billion for the five years

through 2014 to boost oil output and expand refining. The com-

pany will revise its investment plan next year to include the devel-

opment of new oil reserves it bought from the government.

Russia to Harmonize Reserves Standards by 2012

Russia plans to harmonize its oil and gas reserves classifica-

tion with international standards by 2012. ‘From 2012, Russia

should introduce a new classification of hydrocarbon reserves in

harmony with international standards’, says Grigori Vygon of the

Russian Energy Department. Gas reserves of Russia’s state run

Gazprom are under Russian standards 25% higher than those

under international standards. Russia had originally planned to

introduce the new standards in 2009, but then postponed the

Libra Oil Field Reserves Could Be Up to 15 Billion Barrels

Brazil’s oil regulator ANP said a discovery in the Libra oil field

could contain recoverable reserves of up to 15 billion barrels

of oil, which would make it larger than all of Brazil’s existing

oil reserves combined. The oil well drilled at Libra lies 183

kilometers off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, and the water depth

is 1,964 meters.

het prijzengeld van 2009 en 2010 een multifunctionele ruimte met kantine. In deze ruimte kunnen studenten huiswerk maken en lessen voorbereiden, maar ook creatief bezig zijn en repeteren voor optredens of om te oefenen tijdens Got Talent?. Dit project zal worden gerealiseerd door studenten van de richting bouwkunde. Het voorstel is al goedgekeurd door de sponsors, Staatsolie en Telesur.

SPI-docenten Claudette Mac Intosh en Verdi Getrouw hebben de studenten begeleid. Zij zijn trots op de groep, die zich de hele vakantie optimaal heeft ingezet voor Got Talent?

Ook de groep van het NATIN heeft dag en nacht gewerkt om opnieuw in de prijzen te vallen. “Het motto was ‘alles op alles’, anders zijn we eruit!”, zegt deelnemer Abigail Biswana. Begeleider Simone Felter kijkt terug op een leuke samenwerking met de stu-denten. “Het geeft een voldaan gevoel” zegt ze. Directeuren Randjiet Jhagroe (SPI) en Dave Abeleven (NATIN) zijn tevreden over de prestaties van de studen-ten en over de organisatie die achter Got Talent staat.

Telesur-Staatsolie Got Talent? 2010 Give it All, or Else We’re Out

Students of the Surinaams Pedagogisch Instituut (SPI), will soon

be able to study, make handicrafts, eat and relax in a stimulating

environment. Their school won this year’s edition of the talent con-

test the Telesur-Staatsolie Got Talent? Show. Their prize of US$

10,000 will be spent on a makeover of the students’ lounge.

The 2009 champion, the Natuurtechnisch Instituut (NATIN), fin-

ished second this year. NATIN will use their 2009 and 2010 prize

money to build a multi-functional room that will include a canteen.

This room; will be used by students to do their homework or pre-

pare for classes. It can also be used for handicraft purposes and

rehearsals during the Got Talent? season. The project, to be car-

ried out by the students of architecture department, has already

been approved by the sponsors Staatsolie and Telesur.

The SPI contestants worked day and night on their acts all through

their summer vacation, ‘We even slept at school at times to train for

a good performance’, says Estemona Wouter. Coaches Claudette

Mac Intosh and Verdi Getrouw, both SPI teachers, are proud of their

students who sacrificed the summer vacation for Got Talent?

The NATIN group also worked hard to end up in the final two. ‘Our

slogan was ‘We give it all’, otherwise we’ll be kicked out’, says

Abigail Biswana.

Coach Simone Felter looks back on a very good cooperation with

the students. ‘I am content’, she says. Principals Randjiet Jhagroe

(SPI) and Dave Abeleven (NATIN) are all praises for their students’

performance and the Got Talent organizers. Abeleven is glad

NATIN has proven once again that students at his technical high

school are talented in singing, dancing and drama.

Telesur-Staatsolie Got Talent? is een talentenshow voor studenten van de middelbare school. Dit evenement wordt elk jaar georganiseerd in de grote vakantie. Met Got Talent? willen de sponsors Staatsolie en Telesur bijdragen aan het onderwijs en de ontwikkeling van de jeugd. De winnende school ontvangt US$ 10.000. Voor de tweede prijs is een bedrag van US$ 5.000 uitgetrokken. Het prijzengeld is uitslui-tend bestemd voor verbetering van de infrastructuur van de scholen.

The Telesur-Staatsolie Got Talent? is a talent contest for high school students. This contest is organized every summer vacation. The objec-tive of the sponsors, Staatsolie and Telesur, is to contribute to the education and development of youth. The winner gets US$ 10,000. Second prize is US$ 5,000. In 2010 is Got Talent? voor de derde keer georganiseerd. Ook dit jaar toon-den studenten van achttien opleidingen hun zang-, dansen dramakwaliteiten. Elke opleiding werd vertegenwoordigd door zes talentvolle studenten. De gratis toegangskaarten bleken enorm in trek; het Nesty Indoor Stadion was steeds tot de laatste stoel bezet. De tien rondes van de show zijn ook uitgezonden op televisie. Bij elke ronde vielen twee groepen af

2010 saw the third edition of Got Talent? Again students from 18 high schools performed their singing, dancing and acting talents. Every school had six talented performers in the contest. There was a rush for the free admis-sion tickets; the Nesty Indoor Stadium was full every show. The ten rounds of the contest were broadcasted live on television. At every round two groups of contestants were sent off.

Jubilarissen

AntiniKasjoAliga begon op 20 november 1985 bij Staatsolie als Floorhand bij de afdeling Drilling. Het was hard werken daar, weet hij nog heel goed. “Wij moesten bijna alles met de hand doen.” Na onge-veer 12½ jaar werd Aliga overge-plaatst naar de afdeling Plant Secu-

rity & Personnel Services (PS & PS) Saramacca, waar hij als Guard aan de slag ging. Vanaf 2009 bekleedt Aliga de functie van Maintenance Assistant tweede klas bij PS & PS. Hij is nieuwsgierig en leergierig. Zolang hij plezier in zijn werk heeft, wil hij alles leren en doen. “Als je met iedereen kunt opschieten dan werk je prettig.” Om zich verder te ontwikkelen, grijpt Aliga de kansen die zich voordoen tijdens het werk.Deze collega staat erom bekend dat hij goede afspraken maakt en die ook nakomt. Hij is belast met het onderhoud van gebouwen en terreinen en daar-bij speelt afstemming met zijn leidinggevenden een belangrijke rol. Aliga werkt graag met een prioriteitenlijst, maar als er plotseling een toilet defect raakt, wordt dat direct gerepareerd. Aliga’s bijnaam is Mandór, Javaans voor baas. Die kreeg hij in de pioniersjaren van Staatsolie. In die tijd was je niet gebonden aan één functie, medewerkers deden zo’n beetje alles op hun afdeling. Bij Drilling werkte Aliga als Derrick-man* en Boormeester. Ook nam hij waar voor de Supervisor: in die functie was hij dan de leidinggevende, de mandór. Hij vervulde die taak goed en kreeg, met zijn ploeg, het werk op tijd af. In zijn vrije tijd is Aliga te vinden op zijn kostgrondje waar hij verschillende gewassen verbouwt. Ook besteedt hij aandacht aan zijn vrouw en kinderen. Over zeven jaren gaat Aliga met pensioen. Hij wil zijn carrière het liefst afslui-ten op de afdeling waar hij nu werkt.

Almost Everything Was Done Manually

Antini Kasjo Aliga started as Floorhand at Drilling on 20 November, 1985. He still remembers how hard it was work-ing back then. ‘We did almost everything manually.’ After approximately 12½ years he was transferred to the Plant Security & Personnel Services (PS & PS) department at Saramacca, where he started as Guard.Since 2009 Aliga is Maintenance Assistant second class with PS & PS. He is eager to learn. He enjoys doing his job and wants to know everything. ‘If you get along with everyone, you’ll enjoy your work.’ Aliga grabs every opportunity he gets to further his career.This colleague is known for making sound appointments and always sticking to his word. He is in charge of internal maintenance,so fine-tuning with his superiors is very important. Aliga prefers working with a priority list, but unexpected prob-lems he fixes immediately .Aliga is nicknamed Mandór, Javanese for boss. The name he got in Staatsolie’s pioneering years. Back then no one had a specific job; everybody did whatever odd job had to be done at their department. At Drilling Aliga worked as Derrickman* and Drilling chief. He also filled in for the Supervisor. In that position he was the mandór. He did his job well and was always on time with his crew. In his spare time Aliga is always in his gar-den planting several produce. He also spares time for his wife and kids. In seven years time Aliga will retire. He would very much want to end his career at his current department.

moet vasthouden aan het geloof dat de olie er is”, zegt hij. Deze jubilaris heeft vele keren als eerste de olie uit de grond zien komen. Mataw is op Catharina Sophia begonnen en heeft bij Staatsolie verschillende functies bekleed. Een hoogtepunt in zijn loopbaan noemt hij de succesvolle afronding van de opleiding tot Driller. “Ik werd toegelaten met mijn lts-diplo-ma, terwijl de instapeis mbo was. Ik vond dat ik een kans moest krijgen om die training te volgen. Het was een uitdaging, maar ik heb het gehaald.” Mataw is Senior Technician bij Drilling: hij heeft de omschakeling gemaakt van zwaar veldarbeid naar kantoorwerk. In zijn huidige functie is hij onder meer bezig met de boorprocessen. Hij heeft een no-nonsensementaliteit: doe-len moeten binnen de gestelde termijn worden gehaald. Als er gewerkt moet worden, is er geen tijd voor grappen.

No Room for Jokes

A quarter of a century ago, Prediepkoemar Mataw left his then employer, Suralco, to make a living in the ‘new, yet doubt-ful Surinamese oil industry’. On October 8, 1985 he started as Sample Catcher with the Drilling Department. His task was to take samples at a well during the drilling process. ‘You have to be confident that there is oil,’ he says. Jubilee Mataw has wit-nessed the striking of oil from up close many a time.Mataw started at Catherina Sophia and has worked in several positions with the company. A height in his career is definitely the successful completion of his training to Driller. ‘They allowed me to enroll with my Lts (secondary technical school) diploma, while the course requirement was a technical high school diploma. I needed a chance to get in. It was a chal-lenge, but I made it.’Mataw is Senior Technician at Drilling: he has switched from hard fieldwork to desk work. In his current position, he is in charge of drilling processes. He has a no-nonsense mentality: goals must be met within the set period. If there is work to be done, there is no room for jokes.

A Worker Who Likes Fun

Rachmat Amatkarso has been working at Staatsolie for 25 years on 1 November 2010. His first ten years he worked at Drilling in Saramacca. First he was Floorhand and later Derrickman*. In April 1998 he was transferred to Material Management (now Procurement) as Assistant Issuer (store-house assistant). In 2005, Amatkarso got transferred to the storehouse at Tout Lui Faut, as Stores Assistant first class.‘Working on the rig was quite hard work,’ says Amatkarso about his pioneer years. ‘If you’d compare it to what I do now, my current job is much easier.’ He is not the talking type, he acts. Getting the job done is important to him.Amatkarso is a very pious person. He is boardmember of a local mosque and has studied the Koran extensively for almost a year. He plans of taking an early retirement in four years time. Amatkarso knows he will not be bored. He has too much to do. He plays soccer every week and on Saturdays he takes his wife dancing or he goes out with friends. They usually go to the disco, a party or a wedding. ‘I like dancing. , meeting my friends and making new friends. I like fun, I don’t like fights.’

Doener die van gezelligheid houdt

ivanlieveld heeft in zijn 25 jaren bij Staatsolie op verschillende afdelingen gewerkt. Hij begon als Floorhand bij de afdeling Drilling op 1 novem-ber 1985. Na ruim anderhalf jaar begon hij als Arbeider op de afde-ling Productie. Bij Productie maak-te hij verschillende keren promo-

tie: Monteur 3de klasse (mei 1988), Monteur 2de klasse (februari 1994) en Head Mechanic (november 1995). Vanaf 1997 werkt Lieveld op de afdeling Heavy Equipment Maintenance, sedert 2003 als Senior Technician. Door de jaren heen maakte Lieveld veel vrienden onder zijn collega’s. Hij heeft er nooit spijt van gehad dat hij een kwart eeuw geleden een loopbaan bij Staatsolie begon. “Het werk bevalt me nog steeds heel goed. Ik ben zelf van Saramacca, en ik stel het op prijs dat ik in mijn eigen district kan werken. Ik hou niet van drukte en zou echt niet in de stad kunnen wonen en werken.” Lieveld houdt van uitdagingen. Zo heeft hij als kenner van het zwampge-bied een actieve rol gespeeld bij de exploratie van Coesewijne in de peri-ode 2008-2009. Hij heeft geholpen om het gebied in kaart te brengen en de logistieke infrastructuur voor de boringen in de zwamp op te zetten. Als echte boiti man heeft Lieveld een kostgrondje, hij eet dus elke dag verse groente. Gommawiri is zijn lievelingskost. In zijn vrije tijd gaat Lieveld vaak jagen. “Alleen in het open seizoen hoor”, benadrukt hij. Als hij een goede vangst heeft, maakt hij zijn collega’s blij met een pingo-boutje, een hei, of een vis.

Op 1 november 2010 was RachmatAmatkarso 25 jaren in dienst van Staats-olie. De eerste tien jaren werkte hij op de afdeling Drilling in Saramacca. Eerst als Floorhand, daarna als Derrickman*. In april maakte Amatkarso de overstap naar Material Management (het huidige Procurement) als Assistant Issuer (ma-gazijnmedewerker). In 2002 verhuisde

Amatkarso naar het magazijn te Tout Lui Faut, waar hij werkt als Stores As-sistant eerste klas. “Het werk op de boormachine was fysiek zwaar”, kijkt Amatkarso terug op zijn beginjaren. “Mijn huidige job is in vergelijking daarmee veel rustiger.” Hij is een man van weinig woorden, hij is meer een doener. Aanpakken, daar gaat het om bij hem.Amatkarso is een religieus mens. Hij is bestuurslid van een moskee en heeft zich een jaar lang in de Koran verdiept. Hij heeft zich voorgenomen om over vier jaren vervroegd uit te treden. Nu al weet Amatkarso dat hij zich dan geen seconde zal vervelen. Hij heeft genoeg te doen. Elke week voetbalt hij en op de zaterdag gaat hij dansen met zijn vrouw of met vrienden. Dat kan in de discotheek, of bij een verjaardag of bruiloft. “Ik hou van dansen. Ik geniet, ontmoet vrienden en maak meer vrienden. Ik hou van gezelligheid, niet van ruzie.”

A Man Who Likes Challenges

In his 25 years with the company, Ivan Lieveld has worked at several departments. He started as Floorhand at Drilling on 1 November 1985. After almost a year and a half he was transferred to the Production department. At Production he was promoted several times: Mechanic 3rd class (May 1988), Mechanic 2nd class (February 1994) and Head Mechanic (November 1995). Since 1997, Lieveld is stationed at the Heavy Equipment Maintenance and since 2003 he is Senior Technician.Through the years, Lieveld made quite some friends among his col-leagues. He is not sorry he started working for Staatsolie a quarter of a century ago. ‘I like the work. I live in Saramacca and I appreciate working in my own district. I don’t like the hustle and bustle of city life and I can’t imagine living and working there.’ Lieveld likes challenges. As a pioneer of swamp land he as played an active role in exploring Coesewijne from 2008 through 2009. He has helped mapping the area and set up the logistics infrastructure for drilling operations in the swamp.A real outdoor man Lieveld has his own garden plot, so he has fresh veggies at dinner every day. Gommaw’wiri is his favorite. In his spare time Lieveld goes hunting frequently. ‘Only in the hunting season,’ he says emphatically. If the hunt has been good, he surprises col-leagues with a wild boar’s leg, a wild rabbit (hei) or a fish.

boorpijpen uit het gat te halen en ook weer er in te laten. Ook zorgt hij voor de boorspoeling die nodig is bij het boren.

He is also in charge of rinsing, a necessary task while drilling.
