QUOTE OF THE

DAYThe Great Game Folio: Modi’s Pak Pivot

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi returns from a gruelling “Look North” tour, the domestic focus continues to be on his surprising outreach to Paki-stan’s PM Nawaz Sharif rather than his renewed en-gagement with the Central Asian republics. But the two are not unrelated, since Pakistan looms so large in India’s Eurasian strategy. It was perhaps entirely appropriate that Modi’s pivot to Pakistan took place on the margins of the Shanghai Cooperation Organi-sation (SCO), with its ambitious agenda for integrat-ing inner Asia. Indian and Pakistani leaders have a long tradition of meeting in distant lands rather than hopping across the border. Manmohan Singh, who was not allowed by the Congress to travel to Pa-kistan even once in his decade-long tenure as PM, sustained the dialogue with Pakistan in meetings around the world. Modi seemed to break that tra-dition last year by inviting the Pakistan PM to New Delhi to join him on his very first day in office. If the abrupt suspension of the talks three months later was a setback, observers of India-Pakistan relations knew it was a matter of time before Modi picked up the thread. The SCO summit, welcoming India and Pakistan as full members, was indeed a good place to restart the dialogue. Partition and its geopolitical consequences made Pakistan a great barrier between India and inner Asia. To be an effective player in Central Asia, India must find a way either through Pakistan, or around it. Through his five-nation tour of the region and in his interaction with SCO lead-ers, Modi focused on both options. The priority was indeed on deepening connectivity to Central Asia through Iran. The PM called for accelerated devel-opment of the International North-South Transpor-tation Corridor (INSTC) established way back in 2000 by India, Iran and Russia. Ten other countries in Eurasia and Oman in the Gulf have become mem-bers since. Modi also sought India’s admission to the Ashgabat Agreement that involves Oman, Turkmen-istan, Iran, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, and facili-tates easy movement of goods across their borders. But Modi did not forget that India’s shortest route to Central Asia runs through Lahore, Rawalpindi and Peshawar. In a speech at the Nazarbayev Universi-ty in Astana, the Kazakh capital, Modi hoped that “we can restore the traditional route to Central Asia through Pakistan and Afghanistan”. Despite repeat-ed appeals from India and Afghanistan as well as the US in recent years, Pakistan has refused to grant overland transit facilities for India. One exception to Islamabad’s reluctance to advance transborder eco-nomic cooperation has been sustained negotiations with Delhi and Kabul on the TAPI pipeline. On the drawing board for nearly two decades, the pipeline is designed to bring natural gas from Turkmenistan to India through Afghanistan and Pakistan.

“A lot of statement coming from others are also possibly intended to address their domestic constituencies. As fas as we are concerned, the discussion, engagement will largely happen on the lines of the joint statement,”

Let us begin by telling you what you were do-ing last night. Like most of India (and NRIs), you were tracking Shahid Ka-poor and Mira Rajput’s wedding reception pic-tures via TV, phone and sundry social media. If you are the breed that needs to prepare for Mon-day mornings (schools are open and that pesky presentation first thing in the morning. Yeah yeah, we know), the couple’s wedding reception was

the first thing you came to know about when you reached office. After you perused the pictures and had your share of that vicarious pleasure, you turned to the person sit-ting next to you and dis-cussed the pros and cons of what Shahid and Mira were wearing. The ques-tion got a stiff competi-tion from another one: Which Bollywood star showed up and which didn’t. It was then prob-ably followed up by a discussion on Shahid’s career trajectory.

Indian market gave the Greece deal a big thumbs-up with the benchmark BSE sensex rising 300 points for the second day to 27,961.19 — its biggest single-day gain in three weeks — driven by across-the-board buying activity and tracking upbeat global stocks. “An eas-ing of crude prices pro-vided the additional strength to the Indian market which was ini-tiated by global rally led by Greece bailout. Higher food prices pushed India’s retail in-flation to an eight-month high in June, government data showed on Monday, dampening hopes of an interest rate cut by the central bank in the near future. Retail prices rose to 5.4 per cent year-on-year in June, higher than the 5.01 per cent print in May and the 5.1 per cent annual rise predicted by analysts in a Reuters poll. Food prices were up 5.48 per cent from 4.8 per cent in May. “The surprising factor for CPI to go up was that it was food driven ... we expect the RBI (central bank) to be on hold for now,” said

Sonal Varma, India econ-omist at Nomura.A stron-ger-than-expected rise in prices is likely to fuel fresh inflation concerns for the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), which tar-gets inflation of 6 per cent by January. Econ-omists said the latest number will dampen en-thusiasm for what would be the year’s fourth rate cut, particularly given a patchy start to the rainy monsoon season. After setting an improba-ble second-innings target of 412, England bowled out Australia for 242 to win the first Ashes Test by 169 runs at Sophia Gar-dens on Saturday, wrap-ping up the win inside four days. The Australians began the day needing to chase the Ashes-record target with plenty of time in hand, but were all out in 71 overs, an hour af-ter tea. Riding high from a World Cup triumph, a sweep of the West Indies in the Caribbean, and comfortable wins in their warm-up games, the visi-tors, as the Ashes holders, were favoured to win. But they were out-played on a slow pitch, out-led, and made to pay for errors by an England side which

Armed with what Goran Ivanisevic calls a “Bal-kan mentality” and “pos-itive arrogance”, Novak Djokovic replaced the heartbreak of losing the French Open with the joy of hoisting the Wimble-don trophy in the space of just five weeks. That “positive arrogance” has made Djokovic a formi-dable athlete who, rath-er than being distracted by the joys of married life and fatherhood, has become a human win-ning machine who keeps showing up come finals day. Somdev Devvarman had a bit of history added to his name as the Indian tennis player won the longest final on the ATP Challenger Tour to claim his fifth career title, here. Seventh seed Indian over-came stiff resistance from American Daniel Nguyen before prevailing 7-5 4-6 7-6(5) in the rain-hit final that lasted three hours and 31 minutes, turning out to be the longest summit clash in the ATP Chal-lenger Tour history. The match had been moved

indoors at 3-3 in the de-ciding set after rain halt-ed play for the fifth time. “The funny thing is, they all kept happening on my serve,” Somdev said, re-ferring to the rain delays. “Even with those match points I thought I did well. He came up with some great shots and to be honest I’m just happy that I fought so hard. It wasn’t the best tennis today, but I’m happy I fought and got through that one,” he said. Since winning Delhi Open in February, Som-dev has played 13 tour-

I’ve been struggling this year and it’s not been for a lack of hard work. I’m working really hard on my game. It’s nice to come out here and get a win. Dan-iel made it so hard. He’s such a good competitor, such a good player.” His ranking has been hit bad-ly following the barren run but today he jumped 25 places to 148.

The result was emphatic as well as crucial, given that the winner of the first Test has won 15 of the last 17 Ashes series, including the last five. Australia’s chase turned on the stroke of lunch, when David Warner was out leg-before to offspinner Moeen Ali for 52. Instead of reach-ing the break at 97-1 with a partnership purring be-tween Warner and Smith

at 4.6 runs per over, Aus-tralia was dealt a double blow, on the scoreboard and psychologically. A bolstered England extend-ed lunch for another seven overs by devouring world No. 1-ranked Test bats-man Steve Smith, cap-tain Michael Clarke, and Adam Voges. Smith met a lifter from fast bowler Stuart Broad and steered it to Ian Bell in the slips. Af-ter averaging 97 for more than a year, Smith scored a pair of 33s in Cardiff.

Eight persons, including two children, Sunday drowned in Narmada riv-er at Nareshwar, a famous pilgrimage and picnic site around 60 km from Va-dodara in Karjan taluka. Locals said that the group

opted to take bath on an isolated river bank, little knowing that the area was dangerous. “Nine people from the group entered the river one by one and hardly had they gone a few feet away from the river bank when they started drowning as the river was deep and the bank was dangerous. Only one person could come out alive while the rest drowned,” a local said. Pravin Narola, who was also a part of the group, managed to swim to the bank while his children, 12-year-old Ruchita Na-rola and7-year-old Jainish

The lush green grass and the elite English ambi-ance makes Wimbledon a very unique event. With the only Grand Slam on grass, Wimbledon, comes to an end, TOI figured out that grass courts in the state are less in num-ber. But, if this data is compared with the rest of the nation—only three cities in India ie. Delhi, Kolkata and Chandigarh have grass courts which can stage internation-al matches—makes it a much better situation. The five grass courts in Gujarat —two in GNFC, Bharuch; two at Ghoda Camp in Ahmedabad and one in SRPF, Nadiad are maintained despite the hot weather here. Tough maintenance is one rea-son why one finds so less grass courts, in com-parison to clay and hard

courts, around the world. The oldest of them all is the greens at the Gu-jarat Narmada Valley Fertilisers & Chemicals (GNFC) which was laid 29 years back in 1986 and is still in good con-dition. “The Davis Cup Group I Asia-Oceania semifinal tie between In-dia and South Korea was held here in 1989,” said Sports Authority of Gu-jarat (SAG) tennis coach Rajansinh Gohil, who looks after the courts. Two grass courts in Gho-da Camp in Ahmedabad was laid in 1996 but has not held any major tennis meet yet. The sole grass court in Nadiad was laid by the then SRP com-mandant K K Ojha, who is now additional DGP. Later, it was renovated by Ketan Parekh, a DySP and a veteran tennis player.
