QUOTE OF THE

DAYOdd-even programme is no long-term solution to pollutionThe odd-even experiment in January was the testing of a short-term managerial solution. As any experiment, it gave partial insights into the air pollution puzzle. It was also a test of Delhiites’ resolve to do something about it. The first trial did reduce congestion. The sec-ond experiment from April 15 to 30 had little impact on congestion during peak hours. Apparently, people had obtained more cars, used more taxis and some had changed over to CNG. Reduction in congestion, even though air pollution remains at the same level, reduc-es people’s exposure which is the product of air pollu-tion level x number of persons exposed x duration of exposure. Lower exposure lowers the adverse health impact. It is not easy to assess the impact of odd-even on pollution levels as one also needs to factor in changes in wind speed, wind direction, emissions by neighbouring areas, fires, etc. From that point of view, one cannot assess the second odd-even exper-iment. It might still be considered worthwhile as it showed that people will take defensive action and that this may not be the solution to Delhi’s pollu-tion problem. Cleaning up Delhi’s air requires both short-term and long-term solutions. Typically, the control of a number of short-term solutions lies with the Delhi government, while long-term solutions require the Central government to act. Odd-even cannot be a long-term solution for the NCR as the number of vehicles in Delhi alone, not counting the NCR region, is increasing at nearly 6 lakhs per year in Delhi alone, of which some 35 per cent are cars. Odd-even may have taken out at most 30 per cent of the cars of Delhi’s 28 lakh cars as cars on the road keep increasing and within a couple of years, even with odd-even, the cars on the road would increase. To reduce pollution, we need cleaner cars and much greater use of public transport, walking, cycling and improvement in the quality of public transport. The solution lies in a more comprehensive transport strategy and dealing with other sources of pollution. It requires actions not just by Delhi government, but also by governments of the surrounding states as well as by the Central government.

Shahid Kapoor, who will soon be stepping into the fatherhood zone, says ex-citement is just an under-statement for the feeling of becoming a parent. The actor, amid juggling his Udta Punjab promotions, took a break to interact with his fans on Twitter on Monday (May 9). Ka-poor completed 13 years in the Hindi film industry on Monday, and his fans took it upon themselves to celebrate the occasion. The hashtag ‘13YearsOfSha-hidKapoor’ was among the top trends in India today. Sasha, in turn, decided to take some time off his hec-tic schedule to thank his fans. In between answering career-related questions,

Shahid obliged other curi-ous fans too. So someone asked him how excited he was for the baby. Shahid Kapoor and Mira Rajput, who are soon to turn par-ents, just got back to Mum-bai after their babymoon in Maldives. Shahid and Mira tied the knot in July last year and are expecting their first child together. For several months, there has been much speculation about Mira’s pregnancy after the lenses captured her with a baby bump on the runway at the Lakme Fashion Week earlier this year. It was only at the trailer launch of Udta Pun-jab that Shahid put a stop to all rumours by saying that he was indeed going to be a father soon.

After wrapping up his shoot for Mohenjo Daro, Hrithik Roshan has kick-started the shoot for his next film, titled Kaabil. This comes as a welcome break for the actor, es-pecially after the entire episode with Kangana Ranaut. Kaabil that also stars pretty actress Yami Gautam started shoot a couple of days back. The

first schedule of the film is in Mumbai itself. This is for the first time that we will see Hrithik Roshan sharing screen space with Yami Gautam and it will be interesting to see this fresh pairing on screen. Also, Kaabil marks the re-turn of the successful jodi of Hrithik Roshan with his father after Krrish 3. Music of the film will be done by Rajesh Roshan. The teaser of the film has

received a lot of posi-tive reaction from people across quarters. It was put up by Hrithik Roshan on his social media handle on Wednesday night, which read, “Blinded by a mil-lion eyes watching me... when in fact I am the ob-server, I am the watcher.. The minds eye sees all. Kaabil.” The tag line of the film, ‘The mind sees all’ has caught the atten-tion of the audiences.

Not too long ago, a strong buzz suggested that romance was brewing between Jacqueline Fer-nandez and Arjun Kapoor. The two were believed to be more than “just friends”.Bolly-wood young guns hangout and par-ty together. And hence it’s quite natural for gos-sip mills to work round the clock to churn out some spicy titbits. In an interview with the Times of India, Jacqueline broke her silence about her “alleged” rela-tionship with Ar-jun. She was intro-duced to Arjun by Sonam, who happens to be one of the first persons whom Jackie met after entering Bollywood. Here’s taking a look at what Ms Fer-nandez had to say about Arjun. “Sonam never tried to set me up with Arjun, it was one of those lovely ru-mours. Sonam was one of

the first people I met in the industry and from child-hood she knows everyone here. So naturally, she in-troduced me to all of them. She has introduced me to Arjun and Varun, too. We are a group of friends now, and when these articles come out its really funny. We wonder which idiot opened his mouth, and did

something silly or dumb. The good thing about hav-ing friends in the industry is that we also know what is going on in reality, so Arjun and I still joke about it. We say, ‘Oh, we just heard we broke up!’ Clar-ifying rumours with the person concerned is the most important thing, the rest don’t count.

Ever since she signed her American TV show Quantico, which went on to become a hit, Priyanka Chopra has largely been stationed in the US and Canada. Of late, she has also been busy wrapping up her debut Hollywood film, an ad-

aptation of the iconic TV show, Baywatch, which also stars Dwayne Johnson and Zac Effron. It is probably due to her hectic schedule that the actor hasn’t had the time to finalise her Bollywood projects yet. But Priyanka insists that

she will be doing so very soon. “I should be taking a decision on my next [lot of] Hindi films soon. With the next season of my TV show starting later this year, and also the work that I have to do for the Baywatch adaptation, I have limited time. But, I have received some interesting [Bollywood] offers. It’s hard to figure out which one I should not do (laughs).” But the actor doesn’t want to reveal any names. “I’d rather talk about a film when I have made a decision about what I am going to be able to do, and not what I want to do (smiles),” she says. On April 30, Priyanka attended the White House Correspondents’ dinner, where she met President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle Obama. Before that, Priyanka was in India for a few hours to receive her Padma Shri. “Both the production teams (of her TV show and Baywatch) worked really hard to take out three days, so that I could travel to India, even though we are shooting for the season finale and all my portions for the film. They understood how important coming to India was for me,” she says. But Priyanka admits that “they (the cast and crew members of her film and TV show) didn’t know what the Padma Shri was”. “I told them that it’s like receiving the knighthood in the UK, and that it’s the fourth-highest civilian honour in India. So, every-one was really excited for me,” says the actor. Recently, in an interview with Esquire, Priyanka also clarified

that Bollywood isn’t an “offshoot of Hollywood”. “Firstly, I don’t like the term, Bollywood, especially be-cause of the stereotypes that come with it. We aren’t a ‘me-too’ [industry] of Hollywood. We are the Hindi film

industry, and we are proud to be one of the most prolific [film industries] in the world. We make about 900 films a year, if regional films are also included. So, we need to have our own identity. And that’s exactly what I meant [in the magazine article] when I said, ‘Please don’t stereotype us (Indian actors)’,” she says. Priyanka states that she is “a Hindi film actor”. She adds, “We have the ability to stand in front of any camera, in any country or on any stage,

and to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with talented people from any part of the globe.”

Priyanka Chopra says

she is a “a Hindi film actor” and

it’s great if she is called that and not

a ‘Bollywood star.”

Facebook has warded off a threat to its trademark in China with a Beijing court ruling against a Chinese firm to use the famous name for its beverage, pro-viding a rare trademark victory for the US social net-working giant in the Communist nation. The Beijing Municipal High People’s Court said the local firm Zhongshan-based Zhujiang Beverage had “violated moral principles” with “obvious intention to dupli-cate and copy from another high-profile trademark”, BBC reported. Zhujiang Beverage, which sells products like milk-flavored drinks and porridge, said it registered its trademark “face book” in 2011. The company faced objections from Facebook, but gained approval from the Trademark Review and Adjudication Board the country’s trademark author-ity in 2014 to use it. Facebook is blocked in China since 2009 but its founder Mark Zuckerberg who is married to a Chinese has recently gone on a charm offensive to access the Chinese market. Along with other social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook is currently blocked to nearly 700 million internet

users in China.

Andy Murray and Ame-lie Mauresmo announced Monday that they had mutually agreed to end the Frenchwoman’s two-year stint as coach of the two-time major champi-on. Under Mauresmo’s tutelage, Briton Murray won his first clay-court ti-tles and reached the final of the Australian Open in 2015 and 2016. “Working with Andy over the last two years has been a fan-tastic experience for me,” said Mauresmo in a joint statement with Murray on her Facebook page. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed be-ing part of the great team of people he has around him. A few weeks ago, Shikhar Dhawan was under huge pressure to perform. The slump had come at the biggest stage, in the mid-dle of India’s World T20 campaign. It came as no surprise when he was excluded for the semi-fi-nal, replaced by Ajinkya Rahane, who had been waiting in the wings for a time. With competition for the top-order slots growing, and the poor run stretching into the Indian Premier League (IPL), Dhawan seemed to be in danger of being relegated to the fringes when it came to the na-tional team call-up. In the initial stages of IPL 9, Dhawan was ordi-nary. He had single-digit scores in the first three games. The pressure to

perform was at its peak. De-

spite the unbear-

a b l e t e n -s i o n , Dhawan regained his com-posure, performing admirably in the games that have followed. On Sunday, he brought up his fifth 45-plus score in six innings, with an unbeaten 57-ball 82. It was not an innings of desperation. Dhawan was willing to build his innings before going af-ter the bowling. And it was chanceless barring a difficult chance late in the innings. More impor-tantly, the knock set up a comprehensive victo-ry for Sunrisers Hyder-abad. Overshadowed by

Suspended European soccer boss Michel Pla-tini will resign as head of governing body UEFA after losing a top lev-el appeal against a ban for ethics violations, but said he would contin-ue his fight to clear his name. One of the finest players of his generation who went on to become a powerful sporting of-ficial, Frenchman Platini had been suspended after his dealings with fallen world soccer chief Sepp Blatter dragged him into

the scandal which en-gulfed governing body FIFA. Sport’s highest tribunal, The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), upheld Platini’s suspension on Monday, although it reduced the term from six years to four. “The CAS Panel was of the opinion that a severe sanction could be justified in view of the superior functions carried out by Mr. Plati-ni (FIFA Vice-President and UEFA President), the absence of any re-pentance and the impact

It was a familiar sight. Yuvraj Singh falling on Sachin Tendulkar’s feet to seek his blessings. He has done it twice on a cricket ground now. Maybe more. But these were the two times photographers captured it. Last time, it was during the MCC Bicentenary Celebration Match in which Yuvraj scored a scintillating century to guide his team - Rest of the World XI - towards a safe total. He stole the show by touching the feet of Sachin, who was bowling for Marylebone Cricket Club. This time Yuvraj had just completed his hundredth IPL innings and he again fell on the legend’s feet. The two players share a long history, both backing each other up during tough times and constantly encouraging one another to rise from defeats both in cricket and personal life. After winning the World Cup in 2011, Yuvraj had dedicated the success to Tendulkar by saying the legend was his ‘inspiration’. “In my tough times, I just spoke to Sachin about my issues with bat- ting and form and fitness and he told me that you will matter when it matters the most. That is a very spe- cial thought, it re-mains with me. “I remember I have a picture of me and Tendulkar together which I have put in my locker. I used to have a look at that picture and go into bat. He is my inspira- tion,” Yuvraj said on the first anniversary of the World Cup win. Singh was diagnosed with cancer in 2012 and underwent chemotherapy in the US. Since his comeback he has struggled to find form but has managed to stick around till now due to some match winning performances with the international side. “When I went to meet him in London, I was telling my wife that I don’t want to break down when I see him,” Tendulkar had said three years back at the release of Yuvraj’s book The Test of My Life: From Cricket to Cancer and Back. Yuvraj was heart-broken after hearing about Sachin’s retirement in 2013. He had just scored a match-winning 77 against Australia in a one-off T20 at Rajkot and was confused whether to celebrate his success or feel sad as Sachin will not be a part of the dressing room anymore. “I don’t think I am going to let him go away. I am going to catch hold of his feet and not (let him) leave the dressing room.

Barring brilliant perfor-mances by two women wrestlers, Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik in the Olympic qualifiers at Is-tanbul this weekend, In-dian wrestling was large-ly running through a bad patch recently. Even as two women make a his-toric entry to Olympics, the prestigious men’s 74-kg slot is heading towards a major controversy with the Olympic Games bare-ly three months away. Narsingh Yadav was the first Indian to qualify for the Games when he won a hard-earned bronze med-al in the World Champi-onship in Las Vegas last September. But as the Games are coming closer double Olympic medal-list Sushil Kumar is also staking his claim for the

the player and Czech Ivan Lendl decided to part ways. She took some time off last summer whilst pregnant with her son, with Swede Jonas Bjork-man filling in in her ab-sence. “I’ve learned a lot from Amelie over the last two years, both on and off the court,” said Murray.Michel Platini will

that this matter has had on FIFA’s reputation,” the CAS statement said. The ruling means that European soccer body UEFA, which has not replaced Platini since he was initially banned in October, will have to elect a new president. Platini, though, pledged to continue his campaign to overturn his ban. His only remaining recourse is to appeal to the Swiss federal court, but this can only overturn the verdict if it finds procedural ir-regularities. A lawyer for Platini, Yves Wehrli, said the Frenchman would re-sign from UEFA “in the coming days”.

in the same weight cate-gory. Suddenly there is a talk of a trial between the two for the Olympic berth. The question is why should there be a tri-al now considering there has never been one ever since qualification norm for Olympic participa-tion began at the time of the Games in Barcelona in 1992. True that quota through qualification is

granted to a country not to an individual athlete. But if a particular athlete, in this case Narsingh has attained the qualification at the highest competi-tion and is fit why should he not be considered? ting, Dhawan has qui-etly added runs.

There is a dis-

tinct change in how he bats. Warner’s pyrotech-nics have played a part, reducing the weight of expectations from Dha-wan, giving him space to regain his game. In the IPL, a more measured and patient Dhawan has come to the fore. On Sunday, he kept the scoreboard ticking, and refrained from slogging.

With an aim of scaling up the present solar pow-er generation in Gujarat, the state government is now all set to launch its much awaited project of grid-connected rooftop solar power units, wherein residential property own-ers will be encouraged to install this new system. The Solar Rooftop proj-ect was initiated by Guja-rat Energy Development

Agency (GEDA), which is the state nodal agency to promote renewable en-ergy. In the current fiscal of 2016-17, GEDA has set a target of generating 50 megawatt (MW) of elec-tricity by installing such rooftop solar photovoltic (SPV) units across Guja-rat. According to GEDA Director J T Akhani, the rooftop solar project is for residential consum-ers only. “There are sev-

eral residents who have already installed solar power generation units on their rooftops. However, they are off-grid, as they are not connected with the electricity meter. This project is for those resi-dential property owners who wish to connect their power units with the elec-tricity grid,” said Akhani. “This project of grid-con-nected units has been pro-posed in the Gujarat Solar Power Policy, announced by state government in August 2015. This year, we are planning to install units having capacity of 50 MW. The installations will be done by our chan-nel partners, saving time and energy of consumers in finding right contrac-tor” said Akhani.

Suggesting policy inter-vention by administra-tion for the development of tribals, RSS-affiliate Akhil Bharatiya Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram on Sun-day released its vision document for tribal wel-fare in Ahmedabad. The function was attended by Gujarat Minister of Trib-al Development Mangu-bhai Patel, who claimed

the government’s move to provide easy loans and special coaching classes for competitive exams have helped tribal youths. “As many as 140 tribal youths have been given Rs 15 lakh as easy loan by government. There are four women and 15 men (among them) who have become pilots. Last year, 558 tribal youths made it to GUJCET (a com-

bined test for entrance to medical and engineer-ing colleges) because of special coaching classes for tribals started by the government,” he said. He also said intervention by the BJP-led Gujarat government has stopped tribals from conversion. The minister said Chris-tian missionaries were “carrying out religious conversion” several years ago because of poverty in the region but that has stopped now. “In Dangs, they distributed sugar and wheat as a lure to con-vert poor tribal people to Christianity, (but) we led a revolution and today we can say for sure that conversion has stopped because of government’s intervention,” Patel was quoted as saying by said.

natural and unnatural rea-sons. Natural reasons are like fight among lions,

succumbing to illness and injuries, mortality of cubs, old age etc. “Un-natural deaths occur due to road and railway acci-dents and falling in open wells in revenue area. Further, in 2015, ten li-ons died due to drowning in the natural calamity of flash floods followed by heavy rains in Amreli dis-trict,” the minister said.
