YOU PROBABLY DON’T NEED MORE THINGS.We know. It’s probably not the best ever opening headline in a catalogue. We’ll elaborate on this shortly. But first, let’s talk about luxury. Because it’s a strange concept, and yet one we claim to supply.

Luxury outdoor living is our brand tagline. We don’t regard ourselves as being a furniture company, and the

definition of luxury is connected to that. Ask a furniture company about luxury and they’ll tell you it’s about exquisite, (yes, they use words like that), design and carefully selected, exclusive materials – the list goes on.

Ask us and we’ll answer in a single word: Time.Life all comes down to a few moments. It’s up to us to recognize them.

They don’t call for attention, they don’t wave any flags: they just appear. You get an hour, an evening or even a few weeks, where you don’t have to do anything. Nothing to manage, no needs to cater to.

That’s luxury. The prerogative of being totally unproductive. There’s not enough time in this world. And there are too many things.

We genuinely believe it would be good to live more and buy less. Bear in mind we’re from Sweden. We’re raised on valuing the harsh austerity that emerged from being, so cynics say, Lutheran atheists for many years.

Well, enough lecturing. The Skargaarden 2016 collection is a gently refined and broadened

continuation of the story we’ve been telling so far. We don’t put too much effort into developing new things, for the sake of it, but rather see how we can add things from what we have already.

Save up for those unproductive times. Buy less, but if you still intend to buy, please keep on turning these pages.

It’s not as though we’ll stop you.

FOURTEEN THOUSAND YEARS IN THE MAKINGFor some odd reason people decided to move north, from the pleasantly temperate parts of Europe, a long time ago, in fact during the Stone Age. Perhaps they were outcasts. Maybe they were simply restless. Somewhere around 12,000 BC they reached Sweden.

They then spent thousands of years taming nature. Getting settled. Building shelters. Calling their shelters home.

They went on to building cities, paving streets, reading newspapers, paying taxes, riding commuter trains and tweeting on iPhones.

Genetically, we’re still pretty much the same people that came here all those years ago. But we have moved up all the way from the bottom to the top of Maslov’s hieararchy of needs. Being outdoors isn’t a struggle to survive anymore. It’s about self-actualization.

That’s what we furnish.

ORGANIC GROWTH Product development sounds horribly harsh and calculated, but we still do it of course. Here’s what our process looks like:

We get Matilda Lindblom to design a steel chair that’s so gently curved it looks soft. We make two versions of it in a wide range of colors, and add two tables to go with it.

Then someone says, or rather thinks out loud, that we perhaps ought to make a lounge chair based on that same soft-looking steel in various colors. Then someone else says it. The seed is planted.

Suddenly we find ourselves making sketches, and then a few proto-types and then an actual Resö Lounge Chair.

Next thing there’s a graceful little table to go with it.Sure. We’ll grow up, presumably, and start doing market intelligence

and trend analysis and things like that. Structured, strategic plans. Wow, that’ll be boring.

MANUFACTURED WHERE THE KNOWLEDGE IS We produce our teak furniture in Indonesia and Thailand, because that’s where teak craftsmanship is at its best. We’ve got a sort of nostalgic, (and mabye even a tad colonial), notion that manufacturing in the Old World is still a sign of quality. Even though people have been producing teak furniture in Asia for generations. And still do, in large amounts.

For the same reasons we make our steel furniture in Europe. There’s a long tradition of welding and making the steel strings used in furniture here.

We want everyone to afford our products, but we would never compromise on quality to reduce costs.

RESÖThe E6 motorway runs all the way up to Kirkenes, in the far north of Scandinavia, where Norway meets Russia. But travellers who turn off at Kragenäs, in Bohuslän on the Swedish west coast, and follow the road over two bridges, end up at Resö instead.

Resö is a fishing village that refused to die and became a tourist destination. Here you can sit on the veranda of the boarding house by the sea and have a beer. And when you look out across the archipelago, you can easily get an idea for a chair. One that juxtaposes the soft and graceful lines of steel with the sturdy load-bearing ability of fabric.

A chair that can be varied without becoming indistinct; a chair that is social and happiest in a group. So then you just leave the veranda, go home and design your chair.

Those who do not take the Resö turning, have another 1,600 km before they reach Kirkenes. On the way, they pass Narvik, the harbor from where Kiruna’s iron ore is shipped to become steel.

The circle closes, even if you are still in Bohuslän.

The Resö range is slowly growing. The dining chair is for breakfasts, lunches and dinners. The lounge chair is for reading novels, drinking cava and minding one’s own business.

KRYSS In 1975, Björn Hultén was commissioned to decorate the Swedish Embassy in Cairo. For the Embassy’s terrace, he designed and set out several foldable chairs. The same type of chair was a favorite of the British, a hundred years earlier, who took them to Egypt, which was then part of the Empire.

To decorate an embassy with a former occupying power’s furniture might seem rather ill advised diplomatically. But Björn had already visited Cairo as early as 1960 to see the National Museum’s collection of furniture from Tutankhamon’s tomb. And there it was – the chair. Albeit in ebony, decorated with ivory and gold.

Björn saw a wood and fabric chair that could be folded and carried. So the chair on the terrace was a subtle but distinct reference to

an Egyptian legacy, roughly three thousand years older than the British safari chair.

This year, we’re launching a new dining version of it, that’s a bit higher, as well as a new table to match it. As its predecessor, the new chair is a fantastically comfortable chair to sit in, even if you’re not a diplomat.

Given how good it looks, it’s pretty unlikely that someone would like to actually fold the Kryss Dining Chair to store it. But you can bring it to your favorite place. That’s something.

SKANÖRThe southwest corner of Sweden is a peninsula stretching out towards Denmark, and it is home to the twin towns of Skanör and Falsterbo. Both of them exude bohemian nobility and natural privilege.

Here, obviously, Joseph Frank drew and built five summer houses – the only ones in Sweden. Here, southern Swedish nobility bathes in the nude.

Today the towns have grown into one and it’s not always apparent where Falsterbo ends and Skanör begins. But there is, they say, an embankment separating the two, with Skanör south of it and Falsterbo to the north.

Our lounge ranges, Falsterbo and the new Skanör, are not easily separated either, with the latter as an evolutionary step from the former. But still there are some distinct differences. Such as the taller back-rest with nine slats, instead of seven, and the placing of the cushions.

Page 20: Skargaarden 2015 16 rt

39

Skanör is minimalism, maximized. Clean lines and simple, honest construction yes, sure. But also a spendthrift use of cushions, creating a voluptuous cosiness.

H55 The Swedish Society of Industrial Design arranged the Helsingborg Exhibition of 1955 to, in the optimistic spirit of the age, showcase the previous 25 years since the Stockholm Exhibition in 1930.

The event acquired the neat nickname of H55. Scandinavia’s designers were extremely well represented, including Alvar Aalto, Stig Lindberg, Yngve Ekström, Finn Juhl and Arne Jacobsen.

And Björn Hultén. He designed a sun chair for the exhibition, one of the things that we at Skargaarden have always held dear as a source of reference and inspiration.

It’s so perfect it’s almost provocative. How so little material canprovide so much comfort. How something that speaks with such subtlety can become the focal point for a whole garden.

More than 60 years have passed. Still, to this day, a better-looking sun chair is yet to be designed.

We believe that you could shoot the H55 from every single angle, showing every detail, and stage a photo exhibition that’s more intriguing than most. We may be a bit biased and perhaps we don’t follow the art scene that closely. But still.

DJURÖDjurö is a secret place. It’s in the middle of Lake Vänern, isolated from the world by freshwater that stretches into the distance: you feel as though you are out at sea, or the last person on Earth.

Our Djurö furniture range is not quite so secret. But it does share some of the same qualities: the same sensation of other-worldliness. Djurö has a link to the past, to the iconic Scandinavian teak furniture of the 50s. It also gives a very nonchalant nod to the future, in the durable acrylic fabric in the chair seat and backrest. Together, the past and future combine to create a strong sensation of the here and now.

Severely simple, without being the least bit Spartan.Rather like the island that gives its name to this range of furniture.

Fallow deer also roam Djurö, regal and graceful, but seldom seen. This is a secret place.

Page 28: Skargaarden 2015 16 rt

SKARGAARDEN54

Page 29: Skargaarden 2015 16 rt

57

Seen from a distance, Djurö is simplicity, refined. Whoever takes a closer look is rewarded with an intriguing display of craftsmanship and thought-through details.

NOZIB Nils-Ole Zib gave this chair his initials. Think about it. Something that you name after yourself is something you’re happy with, and quite rightly so in this case.

Nils-Ole’s philosophy can be described as a type of orthodox interpretation of ‘less is more’. Excitement, he says, happens when everything non-essential is scaled back to a point where you can’t remove anything else. Nozib proves this point perfectly. It’s comprised of layer glued wooden slats, beautifully arched, perfectly mounted.

It’s a sun chair. But it’s equipped to withstand rain and inclement conditions. From the screws that hold the end grain away from the ground, to the curved wood slats that are sealed with a dualcomponent adhesive originally developed for making boats, and the neck pillow made of artificial leather.

Did you know that air has the ability to support a man? All you have to do is to distribute the air carefully between curved slats of teak.

GRINDAStanding on the gravel in front of his enormous Art Nouveau villa, lawyer and financier Henrik Santesson smokes a cigarette, his eyes squinting in the soft June light. It is 1930, and he is on the island of Grinda in the Stockholm archipelago. A place where cows wander around as if nothing matters to them apart from the grass.

A thousand miles away, in Dessau, Marcel Breuer sits on one of the Bauhaus Schools’ rooftop terraces. He is dressed in a casual summer suit and bowtie. When he shuts his eyes he imagines metal that can be moulded into any sort of shape. When he opens his eyes he sees the same stars that Santesson sees.

In many ways, the Grinda dining chair pays homage to both these men. Quiet steel pipes that carry rustic wooden slats without a murmur. At the same time, both aesthetically functional and so beautiful it feels natural on the gravel, in front of a house, or on an island where the cows are still wandering about.

Page 36: Skargaarden 2015 16 rt
Page 37: Skargaarden 2015 16 rt

73

The deceptively simple design conceals a very comfortable quality: The gentle springy sensation of the Grinda Chair. Impossible to explain, but more obvious than the wood slats once you sit in it.

HÄRINGE Häringe Castle nestles by Landfjärden Bay. It had stood there for 272 years when Torsten Kreuger purchased it in 1929. Torsten was a man with little understanding of historically listed buildings and a keen interest for new fashions.

He quickly installed a fridge in the kitchen, a skittle alley in one of the wings and Sweden’s first outdoor swimming pool in the castle gardens. Over time, the castle became a jet-set haunt where one could see both Josephine Baker and Greta Garbo. Decadent? Perhaps a bit. Fashionable? To some extent.

If you were to design a piece of furniture according to the same principles, you could base it on solid traditions with precise, balanced lines. To the classic, original design you might add a decadent play-fulness and a very relaxed way of relating to luxury.

This was what we did when we developed the range of dining furniture we call Häringe. Greta Garbo would have been the perfect accessory. But it works with any mysterious beauty in dark sunglasses.

Page 40: Skargaarden 2015 16 rt
Page 41: Skargaarden 2015 16 rt

SKARGAARDEN80

The Häringe Sofa is a total lack of compromises. Yes, it takes forever to weld and polish the steel and to perfectly screw all the slats in place. The result isn’t loud or extravagant, but it’s pretty close to perfect.

OXNÖ Oxnö lies on the island of Gålö in the Stockholm archipelago. Here, pines edge towards the waterline, held back by grey rocks with the quiet authority of millions of years of experience. This is not a spectacular place, but uncomplicated and beautiful: precisely the sublime qualities that inspire our Oxnö range of dining chairs and tables.

Oxnö chairs are designed with and without armrests. Both have curved slats in the seat, which by its ingenious design seem to float just outside the frame. The details are innovative and intricate, but the overall impression is so simple that it almost feels perfunctory. It is almost as though the chair is aware of its own clarity.

Meanwhile in Oxnö: nothing, absolutely nothing, happens that has not already happened for the past ten thousand years. The same pines, the same rocks.

Page 45: Skargaarden 2015 16 rt

89

These aren’t grey-painted Oxnö Chairs, they have just been standing outside for two years, without being oiled. Oil them regularly, and the color will stay the same as the material: Teak.

VIKEN Maybe it’s true; imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. In that case, it’s unlikely that any chair has been flattered as much as Viken. When Gunilla Norin designed it in 1983, she wanted a practical and comfortable chair for her balcony. So she made one.

Viken is the very essence of an idea that in hindsight is so obvious that it seems so simple: overlap the slats, so the seat can be folded. But the structure is unusual, because it is made entirely from wood. There are no screws, frame or metal rods. What you see is what you get. And what you see is teak.

For the past thirty years, the imitations, the copies and the mimics have come thick and fast. Some believe that it’s the most copied of all chairs. And that could well be the case.

When you buy Viken, you’re buying the original. And it’s an extremely comfortable original in which to sit. Just as well Gunilla didn’t just buy a chair that fateful day.

Page 48: Skargaarden 2015 16 rt

Page 49: Skargaarden 2015 16 rt

SKARGAARDEN

97

Many chairs are described as »teak chairs«, but for Viken it’s really true. It’s all teak. No metal at all. (Okay, so there’s a shiny metal Skargaarden plate on the back. But that’s it.)

MARRAKECHIt’s easy to assume that objects with such an apparent perfection as the Marrakech tables, were designed out of some profound, almost philo-sophic pursuit for simplified beauty.

Nah. Not really. It started with the Swedish/Finnish design trio Claesson Koivisto

Rune designing Moroccan tiles. The tables? They were originally made as props for the premiere exhibition of the tiles.

Art by accident, one might (although a bit blasphemously) say. Well, some accident. The tables, with the simple steel frame and the pro- minent tiles, are the work of exceptional designers, working without any pressure. The effortless act of genius, the sublime unpretentiousness.

Good thing result is more important than intentions.

Page 51: Skargaarden 2015 16 rt

SKARGAARDEN 101

This is about as extravagant as we’ll ever be. The playful Marrakech table next to the intriguing and sculptural Nozib sun chair. (Concrete flooring and the Baltic Sea not included.)

ADDED VALUES Over the years, we have complemented our furniture with a few selected things, to further accentuate the luxury of relaxing.

When night falls, (or at the time of year when the day never bothers to even show up), we need light, so we have candle lanterns and the Tipi outdoor lamps, in association with Ateljé Lyktan. And of course the Boo fire basket and candle holder.

We need throws to keep us warm when spring is chilly, autumn is early or summer simply… Swedish. We have cushions made for outdoor use, in many different colors and designs, for everyone to find their favorite. What else? Oh, some neat details for setting the table.

That’s it.

Page 53: Skargaarden 2015 16 rt

SKARGAARDEN 105

There is something very primal about setting chunks of wood alight. The good news is that you can now frame this brutal act of cosiness in an open, minimalistic cube. New for this year is Boo Jr, the smaller torch holder.

Page 54: Skargaarden 2015 16 rt

SKARGAARDEN 107

Pillows, throws and interior details. All the small things that create the bigger picture. We have no intention of being a »lifestyle« brand. We just make the things that we love ourselves.

KORSÖThis table is named after an island just east of Sandhamn in the Stockholm archipelago. It looks almost like a pier that stretches, slat by slat, over the water. The roundness of the corners is soft, like rocks that have been polished by the sea for thousands of years.

Teak or oak? Teak is highly resistant to rot and is almost unaffected bysun, rain, frost and snow. Kiln-dried teak is compact, dense and has naturaloil content. Oak has similar qualities, but lacks the natural oil content. Oak therefore, over time, develops small natural cracks in the wood surface and a beautiful grey colour that gives the furniture a beautiful patina. Teak develops no small cracks, but it attains the same beautiful silver-grey patina if it is not oiled. Teak is absolutely the best choice in terms of durability for outdoor furniture. Oak is a fantastically beautiful wood for outdoor furniture with the patina of an aged wood, but it is not quite as durable. We recommend that you choose teak for furniture to be left outdoorsyear round in the sun, rain, frost and snow. But if you want to use thefurniture in covered outdoor environments or seek to achieve a beautifulpatina, oak is a good choice. But be aware, however, that oak has ashorter lifespan than teak when exposed to weather.

PAINTED WOODOur painted furniture is made of kiln-dried ash. Kiln-drying is important

so that the wood is not affected by cold and heat after it has been painted. The furniture is hand-painted with the best available paints for marine use to withstand weather. We recommend ash for outdoor environments and oak for roof-covered areas. The furniture is designed for outdoor use, but it is affected by weather conditions in the same way as wood in marine environments is affected in general.

OUR SELECTION OF MATERIALS AND THE ENVIRONMENTAll our oak, teak, ash, leather and glass is selected from a long-term perspective of sustainability. Our teak comes from carefully selected approved plantations with the highest available quality. The oak comes from wood suppliers who take great responsibility for the environment in all stages of production. Our outdoor fabrics are from Sunbrella and Ferrari, both leading companies in the development of weather-resistant fabrics.

MATERIAL

Wood is a material that needs to be looked after well. By caring for your furniture properly, you can increase its lifespan and keep it beautiful. One simple way to do this is by wiping it with a damp cloth, so that pollen, bird droppings and other types of dirt do not gain a foothold.

OILED OAKOur oiled oak furniture is finished with quality oil. Maintenance needsare determined by how much the furniture is exposed to the sun, waterand general use. However, a rule of thumb is that you should oil yourfurniture twice a year. Always wash with soap and water before you apply oil (mould and algae can be treated with chlorine or similar). Rinse well, but never use a high-pressure hose. Allow to dry, scrape off flaking oil and rub gently. Apply one to three coats of suitable high quality wood oil. Follow instructions provided on the packaging. Over time, small cracks will form in the wood; this is entirely normal and gives what is known as patina. If you prefer, you can choose not to oil your furniture.

It will then develop a lovely grey hue, but will be less resistant to the elements.

PAINTED WOODPainted surfaces can usually go three to four seasons outdoors withouta great deal of maintenance. However, if paint gets chipped or becomesworn, you need to repair it immediately. Sand and clean the affected area and reapply outdoor carpentry paint specifically made for outdoor use.

TEAKWe recommend that you allow your teak furniture to age naturally andthat you simply clean it thoroughly once or twice a year. If you want to retain the golden-brown colour of new teak you will commit to a regular maintenance program. If the furniture is left to age naturally outside by being exposed to light, air and rain, then the surface of the teak will gradually change to beautiful soft, silver-grey.
