Peer SupportWhat makes a good leader? Some Stage 3 students were invited to an amazing opportunity to be a leader in peer support. Being a leader involves encouraging your group to do their best in activities, making sure everyone is up to everything and getting to know people that you haven’t met before. Our Peer support focus was around Bullying. Some of the activities we focused on was trusting peers, peer pressure, how to build positive relationships and what is bullying? Miss Stirton and Mrs Snell were the teachers that organised this and made it even more exciting for everyone to have a go. All of the peer support leaders had a wonderful experience and a great journey! We now have 60 more happy and helpful leaders at our school.

When I grow up

3M wins Sumdog Maths competition

Our Kindergarten students were special guests this week at our Year 9 Careers day. They did a fantastic job of going on stage to tell everyone what they would like to be when they grow up. We had some very proud teachers!

Congratulations to 3M for winning the Hunter/Central Coast Sumdog Maths competition this week (from the 17th to the 23rd November). Sumdog is an interactive, game-based learning platform. This great software provides children with a fun way of consolidating the maths skills they learn in the classroom. The coding behind the program allows for ‘adaptive learning’, where the software learns the strengths and areas of need for each child and adapts the questions for each student to ensure they feel successful, whilst also working on their individual focus areas.

The winner was the class that has the highest average number of correct answers in the week. 3M correctly answered an average of 280 questions to win the competition, beating students from Years 2-8 across the region. Congratulations also to Zachary M, who won the individual point score for the region by correctly answering 942 questions, and to Cameron B and Ruby S, who came 9th and 10th. Well done also to 4P, who placed 12th in the competition.

You can find out more about the program at http://www.sumdog.com

Stage 3 Oz Tag Gala DayAngry faces charged towards us. Fearlessly we tagged them. Sweat pouring down everyone’s faces with the sun beaming down on us. “Come on you can do this.’’ Everyone was cheering from the sideline.

The Stage 3 Gala Day was held at Adcock Park. We had so many players that we had two teams for girls and boys. The bus ride was a loud journey all the way to Gosford. As usual the weather turned out to be beautiful and we had to stop for regular water and sunscreen breaks.

Each team played 4 games each throughout the day. We played against The Entrance, Berkeley Vale, Ourimbah, Toukley and a few other schools. Some schools were very competitive. 3 teams had wins and loses but always ended the game with a smile. Special mention to 1 of the boys teams who were undefeated throughout the whole day.

Thanks to Miss Stirton, Mrs Snell and Mrs Farrelly for organising the day for us.

Wadalba Cup ExcursionThe laughter and talking definitely showed how excited everyone was to go on such an amazing reward excursion.

Bradman showed how well they co-operated and worked hard to pull together this year to win the Wadalba Cup 2017. Our student leaders and Year 6 students were also invited last minute which made everyone happy.

On the excursion we to Inflatable world, McDonalds for lunch and the movies to watch Paddington Bear 2.

At Inflatable world, we had the whole place to ourselves. There was soccer, inflatable fighting, inflatable obstacle courses and jumping off an inflatable deck onto a big pillow. Miss Stirton, Mr Tanner and Mrs Farrelly even had a go running through the obstacle courses trying not to fall over with laughter.

McDonalds for lunch was fun. But there was a problem! How were they going to get them? Mrs Farrelly and some year sixes went and got it, but it was so funny because they were walking down the road with 77 lunches. A big job!

At the Metro Cinemas, we watched Paddington Bear 2. We also had the whole cinema to ourselves.

We had such an amazing time I am sure we would like to go again. The smiles on everyone’s faces showed what a great day it was.

WCS - little extrasHOME READING

Thank you to all of our wonderful families who have supported their children at home with Home Reading each night, and our wonderful volunteers Kim McClellan and Natalie Greco who have changed and tracked home readers throughout the year.

We would like to let everyone know that Home Reading is now finished for the year. We stop prior to the end of the year so that books can be collected and a stock take completed on them. If your child has any home readers at home, can you please return them to their class teacher. Please still encourage your children to engage in reading and if they wish to track their reading over the holiday break, they are encouraged to do so.

FAMILY END OF YEAR SURVEY IS STILL OPEN!

The 2017 end of year Family Survey is still open! Please click on the link below to give us your feedback so we can continue to grow and meet the needs of our school community.

CHANGES TO CANTEEN DAYS

The P&C Primary Canteen will now be open recess EVERY DAY, and for lunch on Wednesdays and Fridays ONLY. Children can still purchase through Flexischools and through their lunch basket orders for both Recess and Lunch. We need volunteers in order to open for lunch on the other days. If you can spare 30 minutes on these days your children would appreciate your support.

Contact Vicky in the canteen via the school office if you can assist.

UNIFORM

As a school we have always been proud of our students and how they embrace and wear the school uniform. To prepare our young people for their adult years ahead, we seek to develop a sense of pride, self-respect and self-wroth. The pride we express in ourselves, our appearance and environment reflects our inner attitudes. We would like to remind students and parents that a WCS school hat is required to be worn everyday. This can be in the form of the school cap or the bucket hat, both of which are available from our school canteen. It has also been noted that some girls are opting to wear tights to school. Tights of any colour are not acceptable school uniform. Students have the option of the checkered skirt, school shorts or navy pants.

We trust that you will continue to support the School in its endeavours to uphold the standard of uniform of which we can be proud.

PRESENTATION DAY Our Primary Presentation will be held on Monday December 11th in our High School Gym at 9am. Students

that are receiving awards will be notified by mail over the next week. All of our Kindergarten and Year 6 students will receive their graduation certificates. All families are welcome to attend. Please enter through

our top car park.

Thanks for the memories - Mrs NewOver 4 years ago I walked into the gates of Wadalba Community School for the first time. Little did I know then that the teachers and students here would become a huge part of my life both professionally and personally. At the end of the year I say goodbye to Wadalba as I embark on a new teaching journey. I have enjoyed every moment being a Wadalbian and will miss this amazing community. Among the staff I have made lifelong friends. I have loved helping my students develop and mature as they work towards their own personal goals and it has been an absolute honour and privilege to be a partner with them and their families on this part of their life journey. Thank you Wadalba for the fun times, the happy times even the challenging times! You have been an instrumental part of my professional growth and I have many precious personal memories that will stay with me forever.

Thanks for the memories- Miss StirtonI first started my teaching journey at Wadalba Community School as an intern, all the way back in 2012 and I have never looked back! In 2018 I am moving forward with a new adventure and moving overseas to teach, work and travel across Europe.

As excited as I am for a new adventure, I’m sad to say goodbye to all the students I have had the privilege of teaching over the years. It has been a delight watching students grow on their journey at school both personally and academically.

There have been so many exciting and fun things at Wadalba, from Swimming Carnivals and Athletics carnivals that included teacher races, concerts and carols, Stage 3 Bathurst camp and being kept wide awake by girls chatting away all night. The constant laughter from funny things kids say in class each and every day and my favourite being a part of the learning journey that happens each and every day to all children that walk into our school. These memories are something I will always treasure and remember.

I’d like to thank all the students and their families in our community for supporting me throughout the years. We have such a unique school and as teacher I feel so lucky to have been a part of such a large and helpful community.

Lastly thank you to the extraordinary and dedicated staff at Wadalba Community School. You have all provided me with such amazing and wonderful support both professionally and personally. Thank you for making me laugh every day and making work such an enjoyable place to come too!

Good luck and stay safe to everyone.

Miss Stirton

Thanks for the memories

At the end of this term we will say goodbye to 2 wonderful teachers, colleagues and friends. Both Megan New and Jamala Stirton have been a wonderful addition to our team in Primary and they will be dearly missed. They have both made great contributions to the education of students through their hard work both in and out of the classroom.

Students have loved their sporting challenges and expeditions with Ms Stirton, developing great skills, sportsmanship and a competitive nature, whilst our debaters and public speakers have really enjoyed the great opportunities they have had under the leadership of Mrs New. They have both been a big part of many of our community events like our Christmas Carols and concerts, Mother’s Day morning tea’s and Father’s Day breakfasts, excursions and dance groups, and both have loved the opportunity to dress up for our Book Character parades.

We are very thankful for your wonderful contributions at Wadalba. Stay safe, have fun and good luck on your new adventures.

SUN PROTECTIONSummer is just around the corner

With Australia having one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, it is timely to remind students and staff to protect themselves from skin cancer.

In NSW UV conditions are ‘very high’ or ‘extreme’ throughout summer. During daylight saving, it’s best to seek shade where possible between 11am and 3pm.
