    FOREWORD

    Summons of the Wolf Totem

Even before I finished reading the first chapter of the novel Wolf Totem, I knew thatmy definition of a successful individual and a leader had been subverted. I realized, tosurvive and excel in this brutal world of cutthroat competition, I need to become a wolf!

In the novel Wolf Totem, wolves were still savage and cunning, but their profoundwisdom and spirit, as well as their ability in leadership were truly beyond what I couldimagine.

Wolves were intelligent and decisive, and were born strategists. Before every hunt, they would observe the astronomy and reconnaissance the surroundings, and hencelay down a watertight plan. They could predict and utilize weather change, start theirattack amidst the chaos of thunder storm; they could attack from almost all directions, and leave the preys only one way to escape, and of course, a trap has been laid for thepanic fugitives; they would make a feint to the east but attack in the west, so as toupset the foes plan and defeat them while they were still in confusion.

They knew that sacrifices are always necessary to achieve other goals. Sometimes, when chasing a fast Mongolian gazelle, their usual prey, they would regurgitate out thefood from their stomach in order to lighten themselves and assure a faster sprint. Also,if a wolf get shot on one leg, to escape from more wolf-hunters bullets, it could bite offthe lame which would compromise the speed, and run faster with three perfect legs.

Wolves were patient, and would wait, no matter how long, until the best opportunityhas come, and they will grab it firmly and confidently. When a wolf wanted to catch agazelle by itself, it would wait in bushes for a whole night, quietly observe the prey. With any obvious movement, the gazelle would woke up immediately and escape. Not

until next morning, when the gazelle wanted to pee, did the wolf started the chase.Consequently, the gazelle with a full bladder would experience a spasm, and the wolfcould enjoy his meal.

They had a strong sense of unity, and treat all fellows equally. After a bumper harvest, not any wolf would taste the food until the physically disadvantaged ones had takensome. And then the leader would distribute the food equally. Similarly, any wolf whichearned some snacks would bring some back and give to the starved ones.Additionally, if a wolf get wounded in a hunt, the unity would never leave it behind, instead, provides extra care.

Wolves were always learning. They reflect on their successful experiences, andenhance those strategies. Though they might not always succeed in hunting, they wereable to learn from mistakes, and ensure these mistakes would not repeat.

They were greedy, but also temperate. Never had the wolves hunted a complete herdof gazelles, even though they always could. They would leave some preys alive and let

them go back to their habitat. This was not pure mercy, but just to ensure that thewolves would still be able to find preys next year, as the survived gazelles wouldmultiply and flourish a new herd. They were truly the master of establishing asustainable society.

They were synonyms of bravery, and were keen to take risks and challenges. Theywere prudent perfectionists; every move and decision they make had been calculatedand planned

Instead of saying that wolves are like great persons that we can learn from, Id ratherregard their qualities and spirit as a totem- The Wolf Totem!

The Wolf Totem perfectly embodies the concepts of thinkers, leaders and pioneers.Proactivity, creativity, reflectiveness as well as responsibility, all those qualities we tryto endow to Rafflesians can be found in a wolf totem.

As a Rafflesian, I would like to meet the schools standards, and promote theRafflesian Spirit. To achieve so, I need to look up towards the wolf totem, extract thequintessence and develop myself.

Now I howl to theMongke Tangri, and summon the wolf totem, in the name of aRafflesian as well as an adolescent wolf!

REFLECTION 1 Piece of work chosen: Sec4 Biology Practical Test

Biology has always been a difficult subject in RI, especially for me. Before Ijoined RI, I was sheerly ignorant in Biology. With such background, eventhough I put full effort in this subject, I only achieved 63% in the End of

Year Exam. However, in the Sec4 Biology Practical Test, I actually scored85% and was the third highest in class. While many were questioning myintegrity, deep in my heart, I knew how hard I had fought and how mucheffort I had put in.

I would like to reflect on this practical test, to show that with a positiveattitude, plenty of hard work and firm perseverance, success can beachieved.

I was nonplused for the first year by the unbelievable difficulty andcomplexity of the Biology subject I was facing. But I told myself, if the localstudents can manage Biology, theres no reason that I cannot handle thissubject. It is my character of unyielding to obstacles which enabled me asustainable motivation in learning Biology.

Later I realized that motivation alone cannot help me persevere. Though Iput in double effort in, I still found it difficult to understand many of thebiological concepts. As the topic goes deeper and deeper, I received moreand more red crosses on my quiz papers. Mentally, I was almost defeated.Actually, after so many failures, the teacher would like me to join the

remedial. However, since the timing of the weekly Biology remedialclashed with that of my compulsory English supplementary lessons, I hadto give up this valuable opportunity.

Desperately, I had to spam myself with practice questions. After studyingthe model answer for some time, I realized that there was a similar patternappeared in the model answers. I discovered that there was actually aformat, structure, or a framework to answer structured questions, all Ihave to do is to fill in with the correct data. So I tried this format in the nextquiz, and amazingly, I got many of the questions correct!

  • 8/6/2019 Show Case Portfolio Xu Peiji

    9/30

After some analysis, I found that biology structural questions are like

argument construction, each point needs to be elaborated in logic, and the

format I discover helps to ensure a sound logic.

After tackled the structural questions, I set off for another goal to beclear about every biology concept that the teacher has covered. To achieve

this, I tried many methods, once when I drew a mind-map, and I found all

the key points of the concepts and their relationships became very clear to

me. As I perceive better through graphics, I realized that I am a graphic

learner. With the help of the mind-maps, I caught up with the class in a

    very short period of time.

During the practical test, by applying the logical format, and subbing in

appropriate data, I finished the test with great confidence.

To sum up my reflection: dont be afraid of failure, be positive, and work

hard, with some perseverance, and success is not far ahead.

REFLECTION 2 I included this piece of work in my Showcase Portfolio because I worked

very hard to achieve satisfying marks in this essay assignment. Byperserverance I edited my essay for seven times, and vanquished theboredom as well as fatigue. In addition, I feel that I benefited from mypersistence and hard work..

I noticed that I did more research on this essays topic than those of the

previous essays. It was not an attempt to spam all the related points andinformation into my essay because I was very sure that would not work atall; just like comparing to a student exceling in one or two subjects, another student who knows everything a bit will not stand out. I realisedonly when I choose three to four points, and fully elaborate on them can Ihave the best persuasiveness effect.

On further relection, I think my essay was more convincing because:

    1. I could select the most suitable information from my researched data to

reinforce my points of views as examples. 2. After consulting my teacher and other friends about the wording and

grammar, I deliberated the diction and edited the essay for seven times, soas to make sure my arguments are cogent enough.

However, I also found that collecting too much data could make meconfused. As when I was collecting information for the balanced point, Irealized that the opposite stand was actually easier to elaborate, andseemed to be more valid and convincing. Althought I maintained myoriginal stand after a mental struggle, I experienced great loss inconfidence. And another problem was that when I started to select factsfor examples, I did not have a criteria. Thus it was hard for me to accept orreject certain data.

What I have learned is that to write a good persuasive essay, someresearch on the topic is actually necessary. I should also bear in mind thata proper criteria is crucial when I need to select useful materials from alarge amount of information. Additionally, it is a good habit to persevereand work hard; no pain no gain!

My biggest take away is the saying, no pain, no gain! And only when youpaid efforts, can you get satisfying results!

    REFLECTION 3

I would like to reflect on my sec4 Maths MYCT and mainly focus on mylearning attitude as well as the accuracy and speed of solving questions.

Firstly I have to admit that I scored uncompromisingly bad in the recentMid-Year-Common-Test, especially the Maths subject. In fact, what really

disappointed me were not the poor marks I gained, but many of thestupid mistakes I made disheartened me. Faults like copy wrongly, missing numbers and simple calculation mistakes were unceasinglyrepeated. As a Chinese saying goes that, It could happen once or twice, yet a third time cannot be tolerated, which emphasizes that we shall learnfrom mistakes instead of repeating them endlessly, it is embarrassing thatthese mistakes accompanied me throughout the test.

The second problem I face during the MYCT is that I could not finish all thequestions in time, when the final bell is about to ring, therere still a few

questions that I havent yet attempted. From the corner of my eye, I sawmost of the others have completed the entire paper and seemed ready tosubmit at any time. Not until then did I really experience a strong wave ofnervousness overwhelmed me. I realized that I was too slow!

As a Chinese Scholar, I am expected to show great talent and capability inMaths. Sarcastically, I was lack of speed and accuracy during the exam, and scored worse than our classs average! How could this happen? Iwonder. Since I did prove myself in year3, there must be something inside

me which changed in the first semester.

Finally I realized that what I lack was practicing. As a saying goes thatpractice makes perfect, it illustrated that sufficient practicing is thebasic way to raise accuracy and speed when solving a question. And thatswhat fundamentally induced the grand failure.

  • 8/6/2019 Show Case Portfolio Xu Peiji

    12/30

On further reflection, I found that a change in my attitude occurred. Afterexcelling in Maths in year3, a sense of arrogance began to sprout; Ibecame over-confident, and naively I thought without hard work or practice,I would still be able to do well. Sadly, I cheated myself, and the tragedybecame unavoidable. Actually, I discovered that the reason I did well inyear3 is because most of the Maths topics were familiar to me since I have

learned them before I came to Singapore. That means I have already donesufficient practices on those topics, and I was live off my past gains. Butlike a vole cannot survive the winter without enough reserved hay, I failedto survive the year4 MYCT without sufficient hard work.

Even though I did not score well in this MYCT, I actually learned someexam strategies from it. For the second part of the second question, Iactually got the correct answer on the draft paper. However, as the methodwhich obtained me the answer was weird and complicated, and also the

answer itself was strange and complex, I did not believe in myself and leftthat part of the question blank. What I learned from this is that always beconfident with your answer. Additionally, even if the answer looks wrong, when you dont have much time left, just copy it down, because theresstill a chance that the answer is correct; whereas if it is left empty, thechance to score is absolute zero.

Moreover, I practiced another exam strategy during this MYCT. When Irealized not much time left, I quickly scanned through all the questionswhich I have not attempted, and priorly complete those questions which

seems to have a easy or obvious answer, or basically whichever questionthat takes shorter time to solve but embodies more marks. This strategyreally helped me saving a few marks, and minimizing my failure to theminimal scale.

No one is perfect; we all make mistakes, but the one succeed at last bestunderstands the importance of learning from mistakes as well as success.Failure is not fearful, neither is success cheerful. My mother always tellsme, No matter what you have achieved, good or bad, things which passed

have passed, learn from the experience, but dont rest on the past glory.Instead, utilize these useful experiences to build up a better future!

REFLECTION 4 Piece of work chosen: Sec4 MYCT Chinese Literature

I would like to reflect on my Chinese Literature sec4 MYCT, and share my

insights on how to excel in language learning.

Generally, I did well in this exam and scored 84%. The result wassatisfactory, and I was very proud of my victory. As everyone knows,

learning a language, especially the literature, is a long process; reading

widely and miscellaneously is a necessary, or vital to excel in literature

understanding, and of course, it must become a habit. As a saying goes,

Rome is not built in one day, my results were a perfect portrayal of my

    hard work.

To make reading Chinese literatures a habit, I actually faced a hard time.

At first, I think spending one hour reading Chinese was a sheer waste of

time! As an international student, my first priority should be on improving

my English language. If I have one hour spare time, I would rather use it to

read English without the least hesitate. At that period of time, I refuse to

    pay effort in Chinese Literature.

As I spent less and less time in reading Chinese, I found it harder andharder to catch up with the class. Unavoidably, I did unacceptably bad in

the year3 EOY. As a Chinese scholar, it was embarrassing for me to

achieve such low score, so I realize that there was a need for me to put

effort into Chinese Literature learning. Ok, I will just spend half an hour

everyday to read some Chinese novels.

As days passed by, I fell in love with the refreshing style of the Chinese

short stories. And from then onwards, I found motivation for reading

    Chinese Literature.

    14/30

It was not surprising that although in the sec4 MYCT, there were actually

quite a few challenging inferential questions, and I got most of them

correct. I think this is because after vast amount reading, I have acquired

the ability to comprehend the inner emotion of the writer through the

authors use of language and different shades of meaning of the

    vocabularies.

On further reflection, I realized I could utilize this successful experience to

improve my English standards. Firstly, I tried to cultivate a consistent

reading habit. In order to ensure my reading habit can last long, I needed

to find myself a motivation. Since I love reading Jules Vernes science

fictions, I started my reading habit from savoring his novels. After about

three weeks time, reading English books became an important part of mylife. With more reading, my language perception has been raised to a

higher level, and I am able to do deeper comprehension. Additionally,

reading enhanced my writing skills. And now, my English standard is still

constantly improving, and I believe, by keeping up this habit, I will excel my

    English language in RI.

    Dysprosium, Neodymium, Praseodymium,Samarium, Terbium, Erbium,

Europium. I bet youve never heard about those chemical elementsbefore, but I am also very certain that you can find a certain amount ofthem in your pocket. Yes, these are some common rare earths which youcould easily find in your daily life.

Its true that rare earth is regularly used in techs such as IPods, fibreoptics and even in the TVs. This fact gives people a wrong impression thatrare earth is in great abundance. However, that is not the truth; the actualreason for the substances plentifulness is over-mining. The worlds rare

earth is mostly buried under the landscape of U.S

, Australia and China. With environmental reservation taken into concern, U.S. and Australiahave shut down most of their rare earth mines, whereas China, myhomeland, considers the withdrawal of the two giant competitors as achance to monopolize the rare earth market. Yes, she does manage toraise the rare earth price 20 times higher by vigorous and devastativemining as well as by restricting the export. I shall be proud of my countrysdiscerning move of dominating the rare earth market, however, I am not. Iam very clear about the inevitable aftermaths of the Chinas ferventmadness in rare earth mining.

Undoubtedly, for the sake of economic growth and GDP, the eastern gianthas certainly ignored the lethal effect on the effect brought by over-mining.Id like to share with you some research I did on how not-well-managedmining can harm the ecosystem nearby.

Water, as the key of all creatures survival, is vulnerable; it is easilypolluted as it can dissolve anything, including harmful chemicals. Oncethe water is contaminated, the whole landscape is damned! One majorpollutant from the mine will be the waste separating fluid, which mostlyconsists of strong acids such as nitric acid, compounds rich in nitrogenand also radioactive elements. Without the support from foreign

technologies, the fluid cannot be purified or reused, and is directlyreleased into the environment. Chinas greatest rare earth mine which isnamed Bai Yun E Bo(97% of Chinas rare earth, almost 30% of theworlds) filled a 11 square km lake, has 70000 tons of radioactive metal. No doubt that people dwell there get a higher chance of getting cancerand weeds flourish due to the great presence of Nitrogen. Finally, thisplace will become a desert with a polluted oasis.

Also, when the toxic liquid is excreted to a river, the acids will acidify the

soil along the river, and make it inarable. This will greatly harm humanhealth if the producers and the consumers of the food are unaware of thefact that what they eat is poisonous. And of course will deter Chinasagricultural development. Mining in this sense is spoiling the ship for ahalfpennyworth of tar.

As a loyal citizen, I question myself, shall I be satisfied by my countrysgreat economic development, or shall I be worried about Chinasenvironment?Shall I support or protest Chinas rare earth mining? Maybe,

just like what the social study teacher said, its never the countrys fault to

make a decision which is seemingly uncompromisingly unacceptable;there might be a reason that China has to do so, helplessly. But,environmentisnt that a truth that a beautiful earth is the ultimate ideal, the common goal which all countries, all people of all race, all religion arefighting for?! So shall we be reminded that we must love our mother earthbefore we want to sacrifice her for other goals?

Lastly , Id like to appeal to the Superpowers: no matter how you want todevelop your country, think about the environment! Look Before You Leap!

    CRITICS FROM ENGLISH

    SUPPLEMENTARY PROGRAM TEACHER

    Hi Peiji

Hope you don't mind, I'll write the adult critic comments here:

    THINKER/LEADER

Peiji exhibits good thinking skills as he questions the wisdom of over-mining earth's resources. However, he also shows good balance inunderstanding the motives of the country's efforts in these economicactivities. Using thought-provoking questions, he leads the reader to adiscussion of China's "fervent madness in rare earth mining and finallymaking an earnest appeal to all countries to "look before they leap". Hiswriting is persuasive in the use of supporting details and a writing stylethat is direct, even down-to-earth.

To improve, Peiji can use more transitional links especially in the fifthparagraph which looks like a "stand alone" paragraph causing the readerto be a little disorientated. Also, the topic sentence is missing in thatparagraph.

    PIONEER

This is Peiji's strongest point as evidenced by a catchy introduction whichpiques the interest of the reader. Like a pioneer who is unafraid ofchallenging established practices, Peiji criticizes his country's economicpolicy and stresses the need to rethink rare earth mining for the sake ofthe future of the earth & its inhabitants.

    PERSONAL RESPONSE

This blog post was written with deep emotions after I read the article GotYttrium. As I am a strong supporter of the environment preservation, I didquite a lot researches on the topic environmental pollution and overexploitation. This enabled me to know my enemies psychology, hence Ican find their flaws and oppose to them with strong and solid arguments. And thats why I show good balance in understanding the motives of the

country's efforts in these economic activities.

Actually, this idea of know your enemies and know yourself, and you canfight a hundred battles with no danger of defeat was from the book Art ofWar, written by Sun Zi, an ancient Chinese military strategist of the Springand Autumn Period. I found this theory very useful in our daily life. Forexample, exams are to test whether the student has acquired theknowledge or not, so to best achieve this, the teachers will most likely teston the most difficult part of the topic as well as the key understandings. After predicted those key points, I could spent more time on them, andsurmount the difficulty. Utilizing this idea will save me plenty of time onexam preparations.

And as I have mentioned, this blog post was written under the strongmotivation of my deep emotions, I naturally expressed my thoughts byquestioning those who oppose the environmental preservation; thesequestions were not asked affectedly or purposely used as linguisticdevices. And thats the reason why Mrs. Nina pointed out that Peijiexhibits good thinking skills as he questions the wisdom of over-mining

    earth's resources.

I realized that when emotions are expressed naturally from the depth ofmy heart, it doesnt matter if the words were not expressed in a beautifulsentence structure or phrased with resplendent vocabularies, it wouldshow great effects in terms ofpathos, and strike a deep chord in theaudiences; whereas when I polish my expressions over and over, it wonthave much influence on the audiences, they would think that I am justquoting a beautiful poem. So whenever I need to write an essay or give a

speech, I would focus more on emotions rather than rigidly embellishingmy language, and it really makes me more persuasive. After all, emotionsare the best language, right?

  • 8/6/2019 Show Case Portfolio Xu Peiji

    19/30

Mrs. Nina has also mentioned that more links are needed to fluent my

essay, and the fifth paragraph is a bit off the track. After re-reading my

passage, I did realize that the essay was lacking some transition words,

and the fifth paragraph was somewhat excessive. Actually, my purpose of

writing the fifth paragraph was to elaborate on the massive negative effect

that discharge of acid into rivers will bring. I would improve this by

summarise the fifth paragraph and put it into the fourth one. Moreover, I

will try to use more transition words such as furthermore, and thus to

    make my logic more obvious.

And to respond to Mrs. Ninas comments on my pioneer character, I

would say that I criticize Chinas economic policy because I love my

country, and I dont want to see that one day my homeland becomesbarren and infertile. If all these could be prevented from happening by

raising awareness among my fellow countryman, then why should I not

express out my idea and earnestly criticize the wrong decisions of my

    country?

I would like to thank Mrs. Nina for her comments and guidance, and I will

do my best in improving my English language skills.

    MONITOR

I was elected as the class monitor during my first year in RI, and that wasmy first leadership position I acquired in Raffles. This monitor experiencewas significant to me, and I regard it as my first teacher who impartsrudimentary knowledge of leadership to me.

The first leadership skill I learned was how to get along with classmates, and develop a good relationship with them while not losing prestige.Actually, I spent quite a long period of time to achieve this balance. BeforeI could manage this skill, I found it hard to cultivate close friendship withsome classmates; they regarded me as an authority instead of a fellow. Inorder to solve this problem, I decided to find the common interestsbetween us, and have more chats with them on those topics. Gradually, with more and more communications, we knew each other better, andnaturally, the friendship was strengthened. Benefited from frequentcommunication with all classmates, balance between friendship andprestige was then found. Since then, I realized the significance ofcommunication in leadership.

The first leadership concept I acquired was the importance of maintainingcohesion or a sense of unity of a group. During class activities, I found thatthe class would usually automatically divide into several groups: those whoprioritize their studies would stay together doing homework, those who areinterested in the activities will actively participate, and some otherstudents would like to just fool around. In this sense, the class does nothave a spirit, and sadly is not a class any more. It seems that everyone is

so close to each other, but their hearts are actually far far away! Rome isnot built in one day; with the help of the form teachers, the phenomenonstill exist but has been weakened. Even though I was not the class monitorany more this year, I will still need to work on this, because that leadershipis not about the position, but the responsibility!

    PREFECT

After three terms of leadership experience in RI in terms of class monitor, Itook up new challenges and joined RIPB, the top leadership positions inRI. And in the prefectorial board, I learned the importance of teamworkand effective communication in organizing events.

Usually, in order to organize an event with greatest efficiency, prefects willbe divided into different sub-committees, for example, Dcor, Invitation,Program and Guestbook. And under each sub-com, prefects will be givenindividual tasks. For instance, one or two prefects might be working onseating arrangements, and another one or two might be deciding thetheme. All individuals need to progress simultaneously so the eventorganization can advance at full speed.

The importance of teamwork was shown when we were organizing thePrefect Investiture 2011. As a member of the Dcor sub-com, I could not

start discussing about decoration plan with other sub-com members untilthe theme has been decided by the Program sub-com. So, in order tomaximum efficiency, we decided to join the discussion of the Program sub-com and help them choose the best theme as soon as possible. This ismutually beneficial to both sub-coms, and saved time for both sub-coms.This could be regarded as excellent teamwork as the two sub-coms workedtogether successfully to achieved one goal.

Also, I realized the necessity of effective communication during this PIplanning. Due to varies reasons, the theme had to be revised, however, theProgram sub-com did not update this information to other sub-coms untilthe new theme has been decided, so the other sub-coms wasted time andenergy as well as resources during this piece of time. I learned that towork in one big team towards the same goal, each member must regularlyupdate their progress, and communicate effectively with the others.

RIPB as the top leadership challenge in RI has really imparted with a greatdeal of leadership skill, and I am truly thankful for the school to give mesuch an rare opportunity to develop my ability as a leader.

    BLOCK VICE CHAIRMAN

For easier management of the RI Boarding, a Roll Call system is used tocheck the attendance of the borders at 10 pm.

However, due to lacking of formal arrangement, the Roll Call always tookmore than 20 minutes. Many boarders had sent feedback to theirrespective Boarding Master that the Roll Call was inefficient and

    disordered.

As the Hullett 3 Block Vice Chairman, after detailed planning, I proposedto Hullett 3 Boarding Master Mr. Kwan a new Roll Call system.

The details are as follows: Instead of random seating, the boarders are to sit according to their room level.

The level 13 will be sitting in two rolls on the window-side, level 11 two rolls onthe door-side, and level 12 two rolls in the middle.

Boarders are also to be seated according to their room numbers, room1 infront and room16 at the back.

Three Block Chairmen each in charge of the attendance of one level, instead ofone of the three chairmen in charge of the whole block.

When Roll Call starts, the Chairmen will call out room numbers, and theboarders are to raise up their hands if their room is called. And three Chairmenshould be conducting their attendance check simultaneously.

Late comers are to entre from the first door, and the punishment will bestanding until the roll call finish.

My proposal was agreed to try out, and increased the speed of the roll callfor averagely 6 times. Due to the good quality of the New Roll Call system,it replaced the original one, and all feedbacks are positive. After using mynew Roll Call system, the efficiency and accuracy of Roll Call was muchhigher.

This revolution of Roll Call was my first approach to become a Pioneer, andi would like to take more initiatives to practice my ability as Pioneer, andserve the fellow Boarders.

    RI BOARDING COUNCIL

As Hullett 3 Vice Chairman, I have shown good potential as a leader

and a pioneer. I was then invited by Mr. Dennis Teo, the boarding

overall in-charge, to join the first batch of Raffles Institution Boarding

Council. The RIBC is the first formal student body serving and leading

the RI Boarding, and is aimed to bring better life to the RIB boarders,

and organize various events to increase the Happiness Index of the

    dear boarders.

As the founding father of the RI Boarding Council, we put in great

effort to set the standards for the future batches of the RIBC. We

formally organized Inter-block soccer competition, RIB Night, RIB Idol,

Chinese New Year Steam boat dinner and many other events.

As Pioneers, we are the first group of boarders which successfully

    organized grand events.
