Tom Haugomat

Illustrator Tom Haugomat created

this season’s cover illustration for

SHOP Oslo. His clever sense of

negative space and powerful com-

positions make him the perfect

choice for this cover, which focuses

on the city’s Tjuvholmen waterside

district. It shows striking modern

architecture rising out of the water,

and alludes to the area’s historic

shipyards. Read more about this

vibrant area of Oslo in our feature

on page 26. Tom has previously

created work for Printemps, the

Times and Modus among others.

AWESOME ALDO

These exquisite lace-up sandals in

navy are a prime example of Aldo’s

commitment to design and quality.

In 1972, Aldo Bensadoun followed

in his family footsteps and set out

to create a shoe company with a

diference. He envisioned a brand

that stood for compassion and eth-

ics and which would exceed cus-

tomers’ expectations. Today, with

more than 1,900 stores around the

world, the Aldo Group is a global

leader in fashion retail. Reaching

just above the ankle, the lacing of

these sandals gives a nod to this

season’s gladiator trend while the

manageable heel height means they

are comfortable enough to wear all

day and throughout the evening.

Team with a pair of tailored shorts

or a shift dress for maximum leg-

lengthening impact. th

BEAUTY

Beauty favourite Aesop has

opened its frst store in Nor-

way. Located on Prinsensgate in

Oslo, the shop ofers visitors the

chance to browse a wide range

of the brand’s signature hair,

body and skin products. Aesop is

known for its dedication to me-

ticulously designed stores, and

this new branch is no exception.

With the help of local architec-

ture frm Snøhetta, Aesop has

designed its Oslo store with the

sensory experience of its con-

sultation process in mind. The

store follows the minimalistic

trend with which the brand is

so often associated; walls are

whitewashed and products are

displayed on simple protruding

shelves. The space’s most eye-

catching feature is a monastery-

style ceiling, which has been

contemporised with intersecting

domes, creating a sense of depth

while allowing for experimenta-

tion in lighting and acoustics.

With this in mind, Aesop Oslo is

worth a visit for its architectural

design just as much as for its out-

standing products. rf

Previous page: Astrup Fearnley museum

In the 17th century, Norway’s

most dangerous criminals were

sent to the tiny island of Tju-

vholmen. Today, it has been trans-

formed into a hub of contemporary

art and architecture and has be-

come Oslo’s most vibrant district.

Located on the Oslo fjord and just

fve minutes’ walk from the city

centre, Tjuvholmen ofers two

kilometres of seafront along with

an array of high-end boutiques,

award-winning restaurants, ex-

traordinary works of art and mag-

nifcent architecture.

As soon as the sun starts to

shine, Tjuvholmen and the neigh-

bouring district of Aker Brygge at-

tract visitors and locals, who fock

to the area from the city centre.

Here, they wander along the pedes-

trianised streets, stroll along the

quay, admire the many sights and

enjoy a meal with a view at one of

the many harbourside restaurants.

For those with an interest in

contemporary architecture, the

area has plenty to ofer. Buildings

by 20 diferent architects feature

across the island, providing a com-

prehensive overview of current

trends. Architectural styles difer

across the island, and building uses

range from chic apartments and

ofces to shops, bars and art gal-

leries. Aker Brygge was, for over a

century, the site of a shipyard and

today is distinctive because of the

way in which historic buildings and

warehouses have been combined

with striking modern architecture.

The area now has the highest

concentration of shops in this part

of the city and its portfolio of stores

makes it well worth a visit. Lo-

cal clothing labels such as Mens-

wear can be found here, along

with international brands. With

its nautical infuences and preppy

styling, the Norwegian label Jean

Paul is perfectly suited to its Aker

Brygge location. It is also a label

worthy of international attention.

According to Monica Solberg, the

brand’s marketing manager, when

André and Per Placht opened

their frst store in 1977, the col-

lection, style and philosophy were

similar to those of Ralph Lauren,

René Lacoste and John E Brooks,

founder of the US clothing retailer

Brooks Brothers.

Since then, Jean Paul has per-

fected a relaxed and sporty style

and has become known for its mar-

itime colour palette of navy, white

and red. ‘Jean Paul has strong asso-

ciations to sailing and activities by

the sea, as well as the preppy style

you often fnd in these environ-

ments,’ says Solberg. ‘Aker Brygge

is the one place in Oslo that ofers

store locations with a sea view and

boat piers. It is a perfect match for

our brand.’

After a long day shopping in

the area’s fnest boutiques, visitors

are sure to be in need of refresh-

ment, and Tjuvholmen’s dining

scene doesn’t disappoint. The

restaurants in Aker Brygge alone

have a seating capacity of 5,000

and a number of Oslo’s fnest res-

taurants are located in the area.

Unsurprisingly, given the location,

seafood restaurants are the most

prevalent, among them Alex Sushi

and Lofoten. As well as ofering a

menu based on high-quality local

produce, Onda contributes to the

area’s distinctive appearance with

its spectacular architecture. Onda

means ‘wave’ in Spanish and the

restaurant is shaped to resemble its

name, with curved walls clad in

dates back to the 1960s and has

consistently featured works that

push the boundaries. When the

museum was looking for a new

location a few years ago, creative

Tjuvholmen was a perfect ft. ‘Tju-

vholmen provides the museum

with a prominent location in the

centre of Oslo,’ says Gard Andreas

Frantzsen, the museum’s head of

communications. ‘Furthermore,

the new building is an architectural

masterpiece and the area is much

more vibrant – in the summer it is

buzzing with people.’

The museum’s diverse collec-

tion and location have wide appeal.

‘A typical visitor could be anyone

from an art and architecture con-

noisseur to urban lifestyle-orien-

tated people,’ says Frantzsen. ‘The

building is meant to be a place for

silence and meditation, but it’s also

somewhere to meet people or to just

enjoy a cup of cofee while watch-

ing the boats in the fjord go by.’

In the east of Oslo, the trendy

neighbourhood of Grünerløkka

ofers plenty of tasty gourmet ex-

periences. Formerly an industrial

part of the city, the area is now

known for its artistic atmosphere,

designer boutiques and galleries.

Its restaurant scene is also going

from strength to strength: destina-

tions to check out include a novel

take on the classic American diner,

complete with juicy burgers and

indulgent milkshakes, a romantic

French bistro and a welcoming

local venue that’s perfect for an

informal lunch or dinner. Grüner-

løkka’s eateries are shaping up to

be some of the best in the city.

Le Benjamin brings the favours

and atmosphere of an intimate

French bistro to Oslo. The stan-

dard menu is a confdent mix of

French classics such as tarte fam-

bée, fondue savoyarde, entrecôte and

sweet breads, all executed with

precision and fair. Additionally,

there’s a changing daily menu and

an extensive wine list with a focus

on Burgundy wines. Cheese lovers

will be delighted with the plentiful

selection of French varieties, which

includes more than 20 types, cho-

The concept at Tancher is simple:

diners can chose either a small or

large portion of dry-aged, slow-

cooked rib-eye steak and then se-

lect their side dishes from a range of

options including green vegetables,

French fries and a very impressive

potato gratin. There’s also a choice

of sauces to accompany your steak.

Starters of salmon, foie gras and

scallops are generously sized, and

the wine list is divided into two sec-

tions: the ‘ofcial’ list and a ‘back-

list’ which names the restaurant’s

very best bottles, mainly sourced

from France and Italy.

TRANSLATIONS

26: An Isle Apart

Jean Paul

Brooks Brothers.

Alex Sushi и Lofoten.

Astrup

Fearnley,

Aker Brygge

Tjuvholmen

Aker Brygge

Alex

Onda

Tjuvhol-

小岛南部的行程则以A s t r u p

Fearnley

(Renzo Piano)
