Andrea De Santis

Italy-based illustrator Andrea

De Santis created this season’s

cover illustration for SHOP

Copenhagen. His illustration

is based on our feature about

Copenhagen’s swimming spots

and swimwear – see page 44.

Andrea’s beautiful style and

texture made him perfect for this

cover, and he has created a larger-

than-life scene of open-air bathing.

illustrations at globalblue.com/covers.

As SHOP’s deputy editor, Sally

McIlhone is in touch with leading

Islands Brygge is one of the most

popular outdoor swimming spots in

Copenhagen. Opened in 2012, it

comprises a diving pool with

springboards at heights of five and

three metres, two swimming pools

and two shallower paddling pools

for children. Jacob Christian

Schrøder from Team Bade, which

manages Havnebadet, says that the

baths have ‘shaped the spirit of

Copenhagen’.

Mads Nørgaard also recom-

mends the sea baths which can be

found in various locations around

Copenhagen. He’s particularly fond

of the Helgoland sea baths at

Amager Strand which comprise

enclosed areas for swimming in the

sea, and are located close to the

shore. Dating back to 1913 they

have been refurbished in the last 10

years and are known as one of the

more peaceful of Copenhagen’s

watery wonderlands. Conservative

swimmers should take note that in

certain areas within Helgoland

swimwear is not compulsory so do

bear this in mind when choosing

where to take a dip.

One of the most unusual sea

baths is Kastrup Søbad, located just

20 minutes’ drive from Copenhagen

city centre. It features a curved

bathing platform (which locals

affectionately refer to as the Snail)

and diving towers made from

African azobe wood, which has been

chosen for its endurance as well as

for its aesthetic. Kastrup Søbad is

open until 10pm for those who want

to take a swim under the stars.

A standout swimsuit is fitting

attire for this seaside spot, and we

recommend an item from the first

swimwear collection by Henrik

Vibskov. The result of a collabora-

tion with Danish swimwear giant

H2O, the four swimsuits feature

arty squiggles in white on a black

background or in yellow, orange,

silver and white on a navy

background. Two designs offer a

sporty high-neck silhouette and two

display a more scooped design to

accentuate the décolletage.

‘H2O has been producing iconic

swimwear for over 30 years, so when

they approached us we thought it

would be a fun and interesting

project since we have never designed

swimwear before, so why not team

up with one of the best in functional,

high-performing swimwear?’ says

Vibskov. When asked the reason

behind producing one-piece

swimsuits rather than bikinis,

Vibskov is charmingly frank. ‘I think

that swimsuits are cooler and more

modern than bikinis.’

Although Copenhagen might be

cool in the winter, in the summer

the only place to be is by the water.

And whether you’re stretched out

on a towel by a harbour or relaxing

on decking that reaches to the sea,

you know that you’ll be stylish in the

‘A good design is jewellery that

will truly inspire a woman,

be relevant to her and

always be embraced by her. She will

bring the jewellery to life by

interpreting it and styling it in her

own way.’ This approach to

jewellery design, as put forward by

Pandora’s vice president and

creative director Lee Antony Gray,

has no doubt been the cornerstone

of Pandora’s phenomenal success.

One of the biggest jewellery

companies in the world, this Danish

brand has won legions of fans across

the globe with its delicate,

Thailand, Pandora’s founders were

When its first charm bracelet

was introduced in 2000, it marked a

DANESFew people are aware that

Copenhagen Fashion Week has been

in existence since 1968, with

designers delivering collections

season after season for almost 50

years with little fuss. Yet in recent

years the fashion landscape in

Denmark has undergone something

of a spring clean: the passing of

fresh breed of fashion makers while,

at the same time, Europe’s

new-found admiration for all things

Scandinavian has given these

contenders a strong platform on

which to build and shape their

brands. While design insiders have

long embraced Sweden’s signature

style, it’s only now that Denmark’s

fashion designers are starting to

receive the recognition they deserve.

Men’s clothing is particularly

strong at the moment. ‘While you

may not see reports from Copenha-

gen Fashion Week splashed across

the news, the menswear offering is

flourishing,’ Ryan Thompson

reported in the Financial Times.

One menswear designer to look out

for is Asger Juel Larsen who has

made a name for himself exploring

the relationship between masculin-

ity, softness and strength.

At fashion week, an Amazon

jungle was the backdrop for Larsen’s

exploration of the way in which

menswear is defined in the modern

era. The Amazonian theme was

continued through the colour palette

and prints, with zingy, rainforest

greens and earthy oranges and

browns combined with palm and

animal prints in a safari-hued

fanfare. In contrast, the cut of the

clothes spoke of something much

starker. Cropped T-shirts,

high-waisted briefs, culottes, tight

transparent tank tops, and shirts and

jackets unzipped to the navel

underlined the point that tailoring no

longer needs to be gender specific.

The styling also added an

androgynous note: centre partings,

natural eyebrows and barely-there

make-up played homage to

bare-faced nineties chic.

‘The common belief of what

menswear is, used to be, or can be is

very much outdated,’ says Larsen.

‘This is for the better and it makes

way for a new wave of menswear

designers; designers who are willing

to turn everything upside down.’

Saks Potts is the label from

Danish design duo Barbara Potts

and Cathrine Saks. Vehemently left

field, their womenswear designs play

to the odd, the unusual and the

slightly surreal. Shunning traditional

fashion seasons, their collections

have become renowned for their

inclusion of brightly coloured fur.

Fashion writer Liana Satenstein

described them on Vogue.com as

‘modern-day purveyors of

go-big-or-go-home jackets’. Their

designs appeal to fashion editors who

are keen to get their hands on an

emerald green coat made with fibre

from Tibetan lambs or a fawn-

coloured coat made with sheep’s

wool and accented with pastel-green

sleeves and an aquamarine

fold-down collar.

Saks Potts charmed audiences at

Copenhagen Fashion Week with

scarlet off-the-shoulder tops worn

with white jeans, and crêpe kimono

jackets with stacked circles of green

mink around the cuffs. ‘We really try

to push the limits about people

wearing fur,’ Saks commented after

the show.

Henrik Vibskov, arguably the

most well known of the Copenhagen

fashion contingency, has been

Page 62: SHOP Copenhagen SS16

62 | FEATURES

Above (both): Henrik Vibskov spring/summer 2016

pushing the boundaries of design

for over a decade. He trained at the

highly respected London college

Central Saint Martins and straddles

the fields of accessory design,

interiors and music, but he remains

most notable for his eccentric

approach to, and abstract treatment

of, clothing.

For Vibskov’s spring/summer

2016 collection, extreme weather

conditions and notions of survival

provide the jumping off point for

clothing that carries complex

messages surrounding issues of

aesthetic enhancement and the way

the human form is represented in

the modern era. Street-inspired,

billowing, oversized shell jackets

and culottes create roomy, flowing

silhouettes; long cardigans feature

modern knitted patterns in primary

colours, and shoes for men and

women are shiny patent Oxford

brogues with toe caps adorned with

pink and orange stripes.

During Copenhagen Fashion

Week, the only clothes displayed on

the catwalk are those that you will

find in the shops; there are no osten-

tatious show-only items, as seen on

the catwalks of Paris or Milan,

which are never available to buy.

Fashion in Denmark, like the

Danes, is upfront and to the point,

an alluring mix of technical finesse

and new, exciting ideas. What

unites Vibskov, Larsen, Saks and

Potts is a commitment to

cutting-edge design and their

capacity to inject something special

and unexpected into their creations.

All of which is quietly yet

confidently building Copenhagen’s

fashion credentials on the

international stage PH

Pandora

Vogue.
