    Salvation by Grace

Even those of u s who have tasted the radical saving grace of Godfind it int u itively diffic u lt not to p u t conditions on grace "don't takeit too far; keep it balanced."

The tr u th is, however, that a "yes grace b u t" post u re is the kind of post u re that perpet u ates slavery in o u r lives and in the ch u rch. Graceis radically u nbalanced. It has no "b u t": it's u nconditional,u ncontrollable, u npredictable, and u ndomesticated.

Do u g Wilson recently wrote, "Grace is wild. Grace u nsettleseverything. Grace overflows the banks. Grace messes u p yo u r hair.Grace is not tame. In fact, u nless we are making the devo u t nervo u s,we are not preaching grace as we o u ght."

D ifferences between Justification and Sanctification

(1.) Ju stification is an immediate act of God whereas sanctification is a progressive work.

(2.) Ju stification is a forensic act, God acting as j u dge, declaring ju stice satisfied so far as the believing sinner is concerned, whereas

sanctification is an effect d u e to the divine efficiency.

(3.) Ju stification changes, or declares to be changed, the relation of thesinner to the j u stice of God; sanctification involves a change of character.

D ifferences between Justification and Sanctification

(4.) Ju stification is objective, and sanctification is s u bjective.

(5.) Ju stification is fo u nded on what Christ has done for u s;sanctification is the effect of what He does in u s.

(6.) Ju stification is complete and the same in all, whilesanctification is progressive, and is more complete in some than inothers.

Sanctification is not by works/law/rules, resolutions or anything to do with the flesh but rather it happens by faith and theSpirit.

Sanctification is a gracious and super natural work of God theSpirit

Sanctification is not entirely passive so in sanctification there is something that we must do. The thing we must do is to exercise faith

Sanctifying faith is a faith that breaks the power of sin due to

    O bservations regarding sanctification

Sanctification is not by works/law/rules, resolutions or anything to do with the flesh but rather it happens by faith and the Spirit.

R omans 7:5F or while we were in the flesh, the sinf u l passions, which werearo u sed by the Law, were at work in the members of o u r body to

bear fr u it for death.

    The law does not restrain sin b u t rather aro u ses o u r sinf u l passions.

The law is not itself responsible for sin b u t it is the sinf u l flesh.

Bu t rather the law comes along and stirs u p the sinf u l flesh.

R omans 8:3teaches u s that the Law co u ld not prod u ce righteo u sness in u s.God had to provide another way and He did so in the Son.It is thro u gh Christ and thro u gh the S pirit that we are sanctified.

    Galatians 3:1-3

    You

foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you

, before whoseeyes J esu s Christ was p u blicly portrayed as cr u cified? This is theonly thing I want to find o u t from yo u : did yo u receive the S pirit

by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith? Are yo u sofoolish? Having beg u n by the S pirit, are yo u now being perfected

    by the flesh?

C olossians 2:20-23If yo u have died with Christ to the elementary principles of the

world, why, as if yo u were living in the world, do yo u su bmityou rself to decrees, s u ch as, Do not handle, do not taste, do nottou ch! (which all refer to things destined to perish with u se) inaccordance with the commandments and teachings of men? Theseare matters which have, to be s u re, the appearance of wisdom inself-made religion and self-abasement and severe treatment of the

body, b u t are of no val u e against fleshly ind u lgence.

Yo u see this with all the other world religions. If yo u do certain

things and be consistent in yo u r own self discipline then yo u canovercome sin. These things may cover u p sin for awhile b u t itdoes not solve the problem.

Galatians 5:22-26B u t the fr u it of the S pirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,

goodness, faithf u lness, gentleness, self-control; against s u ch thingsthere is no law. N ow those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh withits passions and desires. If we live by the S pirit, let u s also walk by the S pirit. Let u s not

become boastf u l, challenging one another, envying one another.

A common error with this doctrine is to think that j u stification isGod's part and sanctification is o u r part.

Ju stification is the work of God's free grace for u sSanctification is the work of God's free grace in u s.

R omans 8:4so that the req u irement of the Law might be f u lfilled in u s, who donot walk according to the flesh b u t according to the S pirit.

This means that it is God Himself that is doing it and not u s.

1 Thessalonians 5:23Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify yo u entirely; andmay yo u r spirit and so u l and body be preserved complete, witho u t

blame at the coming of o u r Lord J esu s Christ.

It is God who is the One that is sanctifying u s.This shows afinished sanctification at the coming of o u r Lord J esu s Christ.

    (R omans 8:29-30)

Hebrews 13:20-21Now the God of peace, who bro u ght u p from the dead the greatShepherd of the sheep thro u gh the blood of the eternal covenant, even J esu s ou r Lord, eq u ip yo u in every good thing to do His will, working in u s that which is pleasing in His sight, thro u gh J esu sChrist, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Sanctification is a gracious and super natural work of God theSpirit

Philippians 1:6 F or I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a goodwork in yo u will perfect it u ntil the day of Christ J esu s.

He begins the good work at conversion and now we can be ass u redthat He will perfect that which He started.

Philippians 2:13for it is God who is at work in yo u , both to will and to work for His good pleas u re.

Why are there two separate verbs in this sentence?to will

    to work

  • 8/6/2019 SBS Class May292011

    17/31

It is not eno u gh j u st to ca u se u s to work so that we do the goodthings, He also wants to change o u r desires. So God is at work inu s to will (making u s want to do that which is good) and to dowhat is good.

This is why the Law is u nsu ccessf u l beca u se it simply can not

change yo u r heart. All it can do is to threaten yo u and say if yo u don't obey then yo u are u nder a c u rse.

Sanctification is not entirely passive so in sanctification thereis something that we must do. The thing we must do is to exercise

    faith.

Now we are familiar with faith when it comes to o u r ju stification. We have been saying all along that we are j u stified by grace alonethro u gh faith alone in Christ alone.

The same faith that j u stifies u s is the same faith that we need inorder to be sanctified.

Acts 26:18to open their eyes so that they may t u rn from darkness to light

and from the dominion of Satan to God, that they may receiveforgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have beensanctified by faith in Me.

beloved by the Lord, beca u se God has chosen yo u from the beginning for salvation thro u gh sanctification by the S pirit andfaith in the tr u th

The first mistake we make in sanctification is we start to work onou r sanctification.

Isn't it ironic that as we see the vario u s sins in o u r life we

immediately and almost nat u rally start to think well what can I doto stop this and overcome this so I can be better. And we s u ddenlyhave a Christian self-help program that bypasses the mostimportant step of faith.

1 C orinthians 1:30B u t by His doing yo u are in Christ J esu s, who became to u swisdom from God, and righteo u sness and sanctification, andredemption,

    Galatians 2:20

    I have been cr u

cified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, bu t Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh Ilive by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and egave Himself u p for me.

C olossians 1:23if indeed yo u contin u e in the faith firmly established andsteadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel thatyou have heard, which was proclaimed in all creation u nder heaven, and of which I, Pa u l, was made a minister.

Him, having been firmly rooted and now being b u ilt u p in Him andestablished in yo u r faith, j u st as yo u were instr u cted, andoverflowing with gratit u de.

F aith is like a m u scle. The more yo u u se it the more yo u will beable to grab hold of Christ.

Prayer is an ordained means that God u ses for u s to strengthen o u r

    faith.

Sanctifying faith is a faith that breaks the power of sin due toour union with Christ

    R omans 6:1-11 - This is fo u ndational for o u r u nderstanding of what u nion with Christ means.

    Notice the context:In Chapter 5:12-21Pa u l has j u st been talking abo u t the two

Adams:In the first section Pa u l has been talking abo u t the first Adam of whom we were all pl u nged into death and sinIn the second Adam we have been reckoned as righteo u s and arenow given eternal life.

Yo u can see that these correspond to the two agesThe first age is u nder the headship of Adam and u nder the c u rse of the lawThe second age is u nder the headship of Christ which is eternallife

  • 8/6/2019 SBS Class May292011

    23/31

We have been transferred from one age or one realm to the other one. We have gone from the age of being c u rsed into the age of

    eternal life.

2 C orinthians 5:14-17 F or the love of Christ controls u s, having concl u ded this, that onedied for all, therefore all died; and He died for all, so that they wholive might no longer live for themselves, b u t for Him who died androse again on their behalf. Therefore from now on we recognize noone according to the flesh; even tho u gh we have known Christaccording to the flesh, yet now we know Him in this way no longer. Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creat u re; the old things

passed away; behold, new things have come.

  • 8/6/2019 SBS Class May292011

    24/31

C olossians 3:3-4 F or yo u have died and yo u r life is hidden with Christ in God.When Christ, who is o u r life, is revealed, then yo u also will berevealed with Him in glory.

    Ephesians 2:4-6

    Bu

t God, being rich in mercy, becau

se of His great love withwhich He loved u s, even when we were dead in o u r transgressions, made u s alive together with Christ ( by grace yo u have been saved), and raised u s u p with Him, and seated u s withHim in the heavenly places in Christ J esu s,

There are two aspect to o u r sanctification- One is the killing of the flesh- two is the rising u p to new life

  • 8/6/2019 SBS Class May292011

    25/31

The negative side of sanctification is the killing of the flesh

    R omans 6:6knowing this, that o u r old self was cr u cified with Him, in order that o u r body of sin might be done away with, so that we wo u ld nolonger be slaves to sin;

R omans 8:12-13 So then, brethren, we are u nder obligation, not to the flesh, to live

according to the flesh for if yo u are living according to the flesh, you mu st die; b u t if by the S pirit yo u are p u tting to death the deedsof the body, yo u will live.

Galatians 5:24Now those who belong to Christ J esu s have cr u cified the flesh withits passions and desires.

  • 8/6/2019 SBS Class May292011

    26/31

Ephesians 4:22that, in reference to yo u r former manner of life, yo u lay aside theold self, which is being corr u pted in accordance with the l u sts of deceit,

C olossians 3:5 and 3:8Therefore consider the members of yo u r earthly body as dead to

immorality, imp u rity, passion, evil desire, and greed, whichamo u nts to idolatry. B u t now yo u also, p u t them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and ab u sive speech from yo u r mo u th.

The key is to resist these fleshly desires first by knowing that theyhave already been dealt with on the cross by Christ. Yo u havedied to these things as yo u are in u nion with Him. (Gods word)

Second it happens by the S pirit. R omans 8:13

The positive side of sanctification is to be transformed by theSpirit into the image of Christ

R omans 8:4so that the req u irement of the Law might be f u lfilled in u s, who donot walk according to the flesh b u t according to the S pirit.

R omans 8:9-11However, yo u are not in the flesh b u t in the S pirit, if indeed theS pirit of God dwells in yo u . B u t if anyone does not have the S piritof Christ, he does not belong to Him. If Christ is in yo u , tho u gh the

body is dead beca u se of sin, yet the spirit is alive beca u se of righteo u sness. B u t if the S pirit of Him who raised J esu s from thedead dwells in yo u , He who raised Christ J esu s from the dead willalso give life to yo u r mortal bodies thro u gh His S pirit who dwells

2 C orinthians 3:17-18Now the Lord is the S pirit, and where the S pirit of the Lord is,

there is liberty. B u t we all, with u nveiled face, beholding as in amirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the sameimage from glory to glory, j u st as from the Lord, the S pirit.

So how does this work where the so u l is grad u ally transformed intothe image of Christ?1. The so u l is lead to exercise faith in the Lord J esu s Christ2. The so u l by this act of faith become u nited with Christ, we are inHim by faith and the conseq u ences of this u nion are:
