Meandering circulation encourages the consumerto wander, picking up things that they may not haveintended on. This helps encourage impulsive buying.

In addition, curves help direct the customer throughthe space. Custom Casements mimick the oorpatterns of large-scale mesh shapes. Different scales

of mesh create different points of interest in the space.

    THE LAB OFFICE

I wanted the design for The Lab digital arts company to reect the idea of a common central

spark, from which new ideas and developments branch off. I started by trying to determine whatthis concept would look like if it took a physical form.

An initial curved wall in the receptionleads you into the space. Thecompanys logo, current projects and

brief videos about the company areprojected onto the wall.

The workplace is changing to promotecollaboration. Open workstations andnumerous huddle areas encourage

    this.

    Custom lighting features represent the

concept of conductivity in a three-dimensional way.

A custom reception desk mimics thecurves in the space.

In addition, orange circular rugs in thereception create areas of comfortusing pops of color. These help add to

the fun atmosphere of the space.

I redesigned the companys logo tobe the bold complementary colors oforange and blue.

The clean white of the rest of the spacemakes it the perfect canvas to helppromote the digital media companies

    that The Lab works for.

Glass doors allow for people to see if the room is occupied or not, while stillmaintaining acoustical privacy. TVs on either end of the room let all people be able to see the digital media

Open workstatations with 12-inch high divider screens encourage the employees to work together, and theycan conveniently gather at huddle areas, made of curved orange seats, for further collaboration. These

huddle areas are located in central places, as well as in the far corners, to encourage users to walk alongthe outside wall. There are circular tv screens in the oor with glass overlay, that allow the workers to displaydigital media videos and ideas. In addition, most of the white walls in the space are able to be written on

with dry erase markers to further help the occupants be able to collaborate easily. A large 3-D verson of thecomapnys logo is featured in the workstations area.

Puzzle pieces of all different sizes, shapes and colors come togetherto create a unied image. In this way, the different individuals of the

space come together to create a collaborative community of livingand learning.

The colors of the furniture and the students sitting on them are whatcreates the community from an aerial view.

Main goals for this project included color coding to enhance way-nging,while still making design decisions with a deeper purpose. I wantedto create community public spaces, yet still give the students a sense

of privacy. Overall, I wanted elements of the design to be active andinteracting.

The rst oor is mostly cool colors, and the second oor is mostly warmcolors. The wall feature represents a coming together of different colorsbecause it stretches through the atrium and up to the second oor.

Upon entering the space, students and

visitors rst see the reception desk andfeature wall which are framed between the

two middle columns. On these columns, there are touch screen information kiosksto help the user gure out where they want

to go. The main feature wall behind thedesk is made of a metal frame and hascolored plexi-glass pieces attached to it.

This wall helps inforce the concept of thecommunity coming together like pieces toa puzzle.

A main goal of the space is to let thestudents feel like they can call it their own.

Colored sections help with waynding andan open oor plans let students see thecolors of the other sections to easily nd

the place they want to go.

The yellow section features high-backed chairs

which help create smaller more intimate studyareas that can still be used by groups. The spaceis warm, comfortable and inviting. Curved

crescent seating frame the oor patterns of thelarge scale puzzle pieces.

An overhang above some of the high-backedchairs and tables helps to provide acousticalprivacy. This is important because the student

union will be a very high-trafc area and manypeople may go there to study and do work inquiet spaces.

Large glass windows help let natural light inthe space and make it an overall more inviting

space for the students to want to be in.

The design began with Spanish inuence with a modern variation. I began sketchy different

Spanish patterns, trying to nd a form that was dynamic, yet functional. I decided to use thisshape because it had contrasting curves and sharp lines. I then manipulated this form to createthe custom bar, a main feature of the space.

Focusing on both the positive and negative spaces of the forms,

the rooms and open areas created are dynamic, yet functional.

The space planning design incorporates straight and curved lines,

similar to the angles and curves of the geometries in Spanish style

    patterns.

The warm colors help evoke the Spanish feel. Fun geometricpatterns and black accents bring interest to the space.

Upon entering the space, there is a waiting area for people towait to be seated. The half-wall glass partition allows them tosee into the space and begin to experience it already. From

this view you can see the custom feature from the ceiling. It isderived from the same shape as the bar, but on a larger scale. It is then broken up in a mosaic pattern of yellows, reds and

oranges. It is made out of a translucent glass that is backlightfrom behind, projectings these colors into the space. This alsohelps bring more warm light into the space. You can also see the

bar from the entry, and are therefore more encouraged to headover to it and get a drink while you are waiting to be seated ata table. Wrought iron details line the dividing wall, the bar, and

    Began diagramming

    to explore spatialrelationships andplanning.

    Initially, the idea was

that large circularwalls woulddirectthe ow of the

    space.

    As the projectdeveloped, candy

    jar vessels were

    created instead of

    curved walls.

I began by sketching different shape candyjars to try to decide what form the vessel wouldtake. At rst I wanted a more intricate jar,

but I later decided to simplify it. I then had togure out how to cut through the jars so thatcustomers could move through them.

Initially, I began sketching a large half-headphone shaped display that would be tilted on an axis.I then moved into development using the logo instead. I extruded towers from the arrow logo and

from the L and 7 as well. The design then felt too bulky, so I made it more dynamic by cutting awayfrom the bottom piece. Ultimately, I came up with a design which merges AERIAL7s signature

arrow along with the L and 7 from the name.
