rdm campus is situated in heijplaat, centrally located in the city ports area of rotterdam, at the old shipyard of the rotterdamsche droogdok maatschappij (rdm - rotterdam dry dock company), once one of the largest shipbuilders in europe. Famous ships like the ocean liner rotterdam of the holland-america line were built here. after its bankruptcy, the site fell into disuse. albeda college, rotterdam university (of applied Sciences) and the Port of rotterdam authority saw potential in this industrial monument and joined forces in redeveloping this historical area into a campus. the abbreviation rdm now stands for research, design & manufacturing. rdm campus was renovated from 2007 until 2009, and was officially opened by the Prince of orange in 2009. the main buildings of the campus are innovation dock, the former machinery hall, droogdok (dry dock), the former head office, the onderzeebootloods (Submarine wharf), and the dokkantoor (dock office).

The professionals and entrepreneurs of the future are thus trained in practice. There is also a congress center located on the campus, where all kinds of events occur that reinforce the concept. RDM Campus is a collaboration between the Albeda College, Rotterdam University (of Applied Sciences) and the Port of Rotterdam Authority. Their ambition is to make RDM Campus the innovation centre for the manufacturing industry of Rotterdam.

alle andere (technische) opleidingen, zoals bijvoorbeeld industrieel Product

ontwerpen, bouwkunde, werktuig-bouwkunde, ict en elektrotechniek.

Educationwhat is special about education at rdm campus is the location of mid-level and higher vocational education under one roof. albeda college and rotterdam university also col-laborate with the companies located at rdm campus and universities such as the technical university of delft. at rdm campus, they have plenty of room for applied research, innovation, interaction and experimentation. the courses albeda college offers at rdm campus are metalworking and maintenance. rotterdam university offers automotive training and the rotterdam academy of architecture and ur-ban design (masters degree) at rdm cam-pus. in addition, it is the project site for other technical courses such as industrial Product design, engineering, mechanical engineering, ict and electrical engineering.

ing students to participate in innovative products. We have actually managed to achieve this.

rise Above yourselfFrom 2007 until 2009, the RDM build-ings were transformed into a campus, on the initiative of the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, Albeda College and the Port of Rotterdam Authority. The old site of the Rotterdam Dry Dock Company has slowly but surely been transformed into an inspiring and distinctive place for re-search, education and entrepreneurship. Meanwhile, about a thousand students follow (a part of) their education here, 25 companies have settled and there are reg-ular meetings and congresses in the Con-gress Centre. However, the connection between different levels of education and between education and industry is far from obvious, and still requires improvement. Hooijer: The cooperation between edu-cation and industry is becoming increas-ingly common, but it has yet to precipitate in the curricula of the schools. We need to

train teachers to regard this collaboration as part of their job. Regarding companies, we need to create more understanding of working with students: what does this mean? What can they expect? What can they learn? This requires good manage-ment of expectations. It is important that companies, as well as students and teach-ers, invest time and effort to get a project off the ground. And when this happens, it might yield beautiful results. Hooijer: Working with students generates out-of-the-box-ideas. When you present a repu-table agency with a question, they are re-luctant to think too original, because they are afraid to lose their credibility. Students are not hindered by this burden, they have fresh views. They rise above themselves, because they are being sucked into the disciplines of a company, for instance by arriving on time, submitting tenders, pre-senting well and cooperating.

keeping upStudent projects are important, especial-ly for the technology industry, because

The Innovation Dock is bursting with ac-tivity: students in blue collars are consid-ering the best welding technique, or they are controlling an irrigation robot that needs to autonomously identify and water plants. So far, the robot is uncontrollably spraying around, and the student needs to work some more on the control tech-nique. The students are participating in the competition Vakkanjers (Craft He-roes) for MBO-students (intermediate

vocational education). This makes me happy, says Gabrielle Muris, director of RDM Campus. In addition to conven-tional education, there are a lot of activ-ities here to display technology, aimed at the collaboration between young peo-ple and companies. This works, and that makes me very proud. Co-director Bert Hooijer shares this experience. We want to link education and research with the innovative power of companies, by allow-

Concept House VillageIn the village of Heijplaat, several prototype houses are being built under the name Concept House Village. A beautiful collaboration between MBO and HBO is already visible here, according to Herman Klop of Albeda College. Stu-dents, researchers and companies test sustainable housing concepts here, like the efficient use of materials, zero energy construction, using grey water for irrigating crops and optimal ventilation with minimal energy loss. The machine park of the Innovation Dock is available for research and prototyping. Construction companies also take part in the project, of which the build has already started. Students are incredibly proud of it, according to Bert Hooijer of RDM Campus. They even continue working during the holidays. We only need to provide the preconditions. > P. 33/35

to improve this together with all parties involved. One of the ways to achieve this, according to Klop, is by creating a Cen-tre for Innovative Craftsmanship, which already exists for the Process engineer-ing and Maintenance programme. These courses will therefore completely move to

the campus this year. Muris and Hooijer recognize the importance of a good in-teraction between MBO and HBO as well, on all disciplines and levels. Hooijer: Students become aware that they cannot do it on their own and that collaboration with others has advantages, and that you

Hogeschool Rotter-

Aqua DockRotterdam has been one of the pioneers in the field of floating construction. Climate change and a rising sea level forces delta regions to take such measures. The new experimental and testing facility Aqua Dock, on the RDM Campus, gives space to innovations in the field of floating construction. The facility consists of a floating scaffold, where students and companies can work together on floating roads, greenhouses, flood protection and living and working spaces. It is in fact the wet version of our Innovation Dock, says Gabrielle Muris of RDM Campus. There are lots in the water which parties can rent for their test facilities. The project, in which the Municipal-ity of Rotterdam, the Port of Rotterdam Authority, Rotterdam University and various companies collaborate, will start in the spring of 2014. The innovations emerged from Aqua Dock will be applied in the Rotterdam City Ports, but also in other delta regions worldwide. Indonesia, the Philippines and the US have already expressed their interest. > P. 26/27

they are struggling to find the right staff. This requires engineering education that complements the labour market. Herman Klop, branch director of engineering at Albeda College, collaborates with his col-league of Zadkine College to develop a broad MBO Engineering & Technology in the region. Albeda College has a long his-tory at RDM Campus, because they took over the business school of the former RDM in 2002. Thus the school has exten-sive experience with wheeling and deal-ing with the industry. We need to consid-er what is happening and what is needed in dialogue, according to Klop. Mutual HR policy will become very important. Teachers, students and companies need to be in a circular motion and be familiar with each others terrain. So business peo-ple should be more involved in education and vice versa. Internships for teachers and guest lectures are nice, but are be-coming classic. Teachers cannot keep up

with everything, they should especially be strong at pedagogy and didactics. But they can keep up by creating content and innovations together with the industry.

Continuous leArningThe connection with the industry is not the only focal point for the next years. This also applies to the connection between the different levels of education. According to Klop, especially the connection between the upper level of MBO (level 4) and HBO (higher vocational education) should be improved. Especially for the architecture, engineering and automotive education, which Rotterdam University also houses at RDM Campus, the connection could be better. The campus hosts mainly en-gineering education with no continuous learning connected to HBO. The upper level of MBO should be in closer harmony with HBO. With the new MBO Engineer-ing & Technology, we are examining how

sector is coming to life more. Many mari-time companies are given the space here to work out innovative ideas. Like Ampel-mann; once a start-up from Delft Universi-ty of Technology, now a multi-million euro company that provides platforms that en-able people to make a safe transfer at sea, for instance from a ship to a wind turbine. Muris: Furthermore, existing companies like Huisman and IHC Merwede execute innovative projects here which might end up in the normal course of business. This makes us a kind of extended incubator. As a neutral partner we are able to fulfil a unifying role which allows people to work together in unorthodox situations.

best kept seCretWith exciting engineering competitions and educational innovation projects, RDM Campus is a place to be proud of, although this is not yet known to everyone. Muris: Sometimes I get the impression we are the best kept secret of Rotterdam, while delegations from home and abroad,

even from universities in New York, come here. They find the connection of all lev-els of education, research and industry in one place unique. Hooijer adds: It should be obvious: if you want to do some-thing with innovation, ports and sustain-able construction, you need to be here. To enhance the public awareness, the campus will increasingly become a place for events, congresses and exhibitions. For example in the improved Onderzee-bootloods (Submarine Wharf), which will be redeveloped by the port authority in order to allow large-scale exhibitions and events to take place as of 2015. On days like this, it is busy and lively here, but in the weekends it can be rather quiet, says Muris. RDM Makerspace will attract peo-ple who use the machinery of the Innova-tion Dock, especially in the evenings and weekends. With the Makerspace we cre-ate a vibrant community of people willing to manufacture, discover and network. The next step therefore is to not only be a campus, but also a community.

can learn a lot from each other. Such a collaboration between MBO and HBO students comes naturally, according to Muris. The HBO-student often directs the MBO-student, but at the same time the MBO-student confronts the HBO-stu-dent with a design that cannot be translat-ed into an engineering plan.

Centre of expertiseIn addition to the existing themes of con-struction, mobility and energy, RDM Campus wants to increase its focus on the

maritime sector. Rotterdam University has appointed the port and maritime cluster as a focal point in education. For this pur-pose, the school has established a Centre of Expertise Sustainable Mainport Innova-tion, together with the port authority, em-ployers association Deltalinqs and other companies. It is a public-private partner-ship supported by government subsidies. The aim is to give a boost to innovative education, research and entrepreneurship in the port, industry and maritime sector. Also on the campus itself the maritime

Port of Rotterdam AuthorityAs the owner of the land the Port of Rotterdam Authority is investing more than 100 million euros in the RDM site. By re-developing the area, the city and the port are brought together. Jouke Goslinga, sales manager for RDM Campus from the Port of Rotterdam Authority: By deciding to use the Onder-zeebootloods (Submarine Wharf) for public functions in the coming years, the Port Authority has clearly opted for the positioning of RDM as a showcase of the port. RDM Campus should be known (inter)nationally as the place for innovative and port-related manufacturing industry, while the environ-ment the RDM site, Heijplaat and even the Quarantine area will become a surprising and inspiring living environment that, seen from the city, is worth to explore.

Everything out in the openlongitudinal data about for instance the climate, the rise and fall of flu viruses, all our personal information what should we do with the current information overload? information is not the same as knowledge, emphasizes Kees Pieters from rotterdam University. Data is shapeless and meaningless. the classical idea about data is that you know what you want to do with the data before you produce it. With the current data explosion, you often do not know what people will do with it. our privacy and even our safety can be jeopardized when sensi-tive information ends up on the street. the city of rotterdam has a policy called open, unless: information is basically open, unless there is a good reason not to spread it. Pieters: throwing everything out in the open is asking for trouble. this has many unexpected consequences. as a society, you should first know what you want before implementing such technologies.

The world of ship builders and the world of internet whizzkids are becoming more and more interconnected. This is caused by the buzzword of these days: Big Data. A

deluge of data is coming at us right now, says Kees Pieters, professor of Informa-tion in the Port at the research centre Mainport Innovation of the Rotterdam

Project Battleshipsin project Battleships, students of rotterdam University and albeda college are working on autonomous and zero emission shipping. imtech Marine had initiated this because they want to encourage more students to choose a technical education and teach them how to collaborate with students of other disciplines and education levels. For six months, the students work in teams on such an assignment: from design to prototype. each assignment builds on the previous one, so the result becomes more complex every six months. We started with a remotely controlled ship, followed by remotely controlled constructions, says Mart Hurkmans from imtech. Students should control the ship with a laptop, not with a simple game-controller. remote control turns out to be difficult enough. But the ultimate goal, a vessel that carries out assignments independently, is even more complex. You have to deal with the drive shaft, the rudder, the thruster and you are dependent on currents and wind. So you need to know a lot about measuring and correcting and think carefully about control techniques. this requires quite a lot of programming knowledge, but according to Kees Pieters from rotterdam University, this will come naturally. translating common knowledge into software code is often all it takes. thats much more effective than mastering mathematics at four decimal places. technology should be fun at first. then the in-depth knowledge will follow naturally. > P. 58/59

University of Applied Sciences. According to Pieters, the City of Rotterdam and the university are playing a pioneering role in this matter. Digital information about buildings, infrastructure and landscaping in Rotterdam is available for everyone. The Port of Rotterdam Authority releases data as well, about ship movements on the New Meuse. This data explosion, com-bined with technologies like 3D printing, intelligent sensors and actuators, leads to unprecedented opportunities, also in the maritime world. For instance ships that autonomously determine their course, based on the measurements of their sen-sors. The Open Source Sailing Drone Pro-

tei, developed by a worldwide online com-munity, is a good example. The ship has a flexible hull, made up of modules that can move individually, allowing the water resistance to be minimal. Sensors are con-stantly measuring the environment and are adjusting the movements of the ship accordingly. In combination with sails, this ship should be able to sail with zero emis-sion. It might sound like a faraway future, but it is definitely not. The innovative con-cept of ship builder Damen, which builds ships in a modular way, is a first step in that direction, and is therefore not less revolu-tionary. And why should you not consider a ship as an open technology platform?

Mart Hurkmans,

spEak onE languagEIn Rotterdam, students, researchers and companies are also working on innova-tive ship designs. Like in project Zeeslag (Battleships), in which students develop an autonomous and zero emission ship (see box). In addition, last September at the World Port Days, the Port of Rotterdam Authority developed a World Port Hacka-thon, in cooperation with Rotterdam Uni-versity. Hackers were invited to create use-ful apps based on real time shipping data.

The winners came up with an Amazon-like market place for port services, which uses actual timetables and locations of a ship. Pieters: Such a hackathon shows that a group of students and hobbyists is able to come up with an app in six hours on a Sat-urday afternoon. Whilst people with twenty years of experience would have never con-sidered this idea. This is because people are accustomed to come up with the same solutions for new problems. Mart Hurk-mans, R&D coordinator at Imtech Marine,

  • Imtech at RDM Campuslike the High tech campus in eindhoven, where the speed and quality of innovation is high, we should create a maritime campus here in the rDM area, says Mart Hurkmans of imtech Marine. this will enable us to innovate here with similar impe-tus. international maritime companies such as ampelmann, Damen, Huisman and iHc Merwede already have their r&D facilities located on the rotterdam campus. What is new is that imtech Marine has rented space here. they are initially using this space for the development of hybrid electric systems and solutions for the maritime market. Hurkmans: We look for-ward to having a good interaction between students, potential customers and suppliers. the move is a test case. if successful, imtech might move more r&D activities to the rDM campus.

Merwede and Heerema, and the visitors of the Makerspace. They are all people with hobbies and their own ideas. By mak-ing modern machinery more accessible, people also come to us just because they want to develop an idea. Sometimes peo-ple do not even consider to become an entrepreneur. But there may be real game changers among them. Established com-panies should also give their employees the space to innovate.

nEw markEtsOpen source communities, like the Protei project and RDM Makerspace, are be-coming more conventional. Hurkmans is a strong believer in this concept, espe-cially in combination with an established company like Imtech. RDM Makerspace is relatively small, but together with the internet world it is very big. Ideas are rapidly spread on the internet. Thanks to open source codes and standardiza-tion, they are able to respond quickly and flexibly. This will lead to revolutionary

changes, also in the maritime field. At RDM Makerspace, you can rapidly cre-ate a low budget prototype. With such a tangible object in your hands, it is easier to convince investors or directors of your plans, rather than with only a concept on paper. Hurkmans: Large companies that ignore this, do not realize the opportuni-ties they miss.Wegener also believes that completely new markets will emerge. For instance the market for 3D printing, which didnt exist five years ago. Or the open source computer platform Arduino; other com-panies build modules which can be used on this platform. You could also consider a ship as an open source platform on which the user can freely add or remove func-tions. However, it takes a lot more knowl-edge before such intelligent ships will massively roll off the yards. Pieters: We can put a man on the moon, but trying to let a ship cross the Meuse autonomously, whilst conventional shipping continues, is an incredibly difficult challenge.

recognizes this. He is regularly confronted with the notion that the maritime sector is rather conservative. Systems on board, like the radar, navigation map, diesel en-gine and generators are developed sep-arately. It seems nowadays that there are more computers on board than there is steel in the ship. The technique behind these systems is more difficult to grasp. He calls for more standardization and a thorough integration to unlock all the in-formation in these systems. But in fifteen years time, only the clock has been syn-chronized between all these devices. If all vendors were to speak one language, we could build and use ships more efficiently. Vendors could develop new services based on this information, like apps. For instance with instructions for smart manoeuvring in the port.

sharing ExpEriEncEsIn this respect, Hurkmans envies RDM Makerspace, where standardization and

open source are commonplace. RDM Makerspace offers designers, hobbyists and start-ups the ability to use equipment for prototyping and production of self-de-signed products. This facility, located in the Innovation Dock on the RDM Campus, has machines for woodworking, metal-working, 3D printing and rapid prototyp-ing. All equipment is computer controlled: open software can make every design come to life here. The expensive machines are used for education during the day. At night and in the weekend they are avail-able for individuals. Vincent Wegener is one of the initiators. The informal aspect is important here. People are intrinsically motivated to make something. They only need space and other people who run into the same problems. This sharing of expe-riences is what we want to facilitate with our Makerspace. According to Wegener, there is no fundamental difference be-tween the multinational companies with thousands of employees like Damen, IHC

belangrijk.

Daarnaast zet Ro
