FINALISTEN THE RECORDS 2017

Molino

Oliver Emmitt – trombone, zang Axel Schappert – tuba Alistair Payne – trompet Linus Kleinlosen – saxofoon Matthias Ingiberg Sigurdsson – klarinet, electronics George Hadow – drums Molino has the line-up of a fanfare, but is much more than that! The music from the international band based in Amsterdam has influences from electronical music, avant-garde, jazz, britpop, folk and composed music. The band has won the Pitch competition of the Amsterdam Grachtenfestival and played at festivals such as So What’s Next, Cross Linx, Injazz and Oranjewoud Festival. Their first album ‘Tales from Elsewhere’ was released in 2015.

Canvas

Orestis Petrakis - piano Pedro Ivo Ferreira - contrabas Nick Thessalonikefs - drums

Dark and colourful. Intimate and extrovert. Fragile and energetic. An empty canvas ready to be filled with colours and shapes.

Orestis Petrakis (piano), Nick Thessalonikefs (drums) and Pedro Ivo Ferreira(double bass) met at the Conservatorium of Amsterdam in 2014. The idea of the trio

was conceived and brought to life at the first moment they played together. With a strong musical connection, a growing friendship, and an ongoing search for musical

identities, they composed and arranged together original material, which led to the release of their first album “Common Ground”, in May 2017. Their love from improvised to composed music, traditional/folk, modern/contemporary jazz, and rhythms from Bra-zil and Greece blend together and create a very personal sound, with a strong empha-

sis on storytelling, musical interaction and free interpretation of fixed forms.

The Passengers

Héctor Floría - tenor saxofoon Ashton Sellars - gitaar Benjamin Thiébault - piano Giuseppe Campisi - contrabas Eduardo Cardinho - vibrafoon Aarón Castrillo - drums

Gathering together musicians from all around the world (Spain, New Zealand, Portu-gal, Italy and France), The Passengers combines various elements of jazz music by merging tradition with a more contemporary aesthetic. The band members joined the Conservatorium van Amsterdam last September, currently attending the Jazz Master Program. Mixing each of their personal background and musical tastes, drawing from genres such as non-Western, classical and world music, they use their multicultural aspect to meet on a common material and establish a meeting point, thus creating their own original style.

S’yo Fang Octet

Eglė Petrošiūtė - zang Yoojin Ko - fluit Emilio Parrila - klarinet Albert Kerekeš - saxofoon S’yo Fang - composities/piano Dimitri Elegheert - gitaar Alessio Bruno - contrabas Richie Struck - drums

The music S’yo Fang (Taiwan) composes is a mix of music genres ranging from mod-ern classical music to jazz. S’yo has attained a unique place among the performers

of his generation, with his large contemporary and international ensemble. He wants his music to reveal the complex range of human emotions by transforming them into a sound that is both vintage and modern. They have performed in several venue as, Taichung Jazz Festival Taiwan, CinemAsia Film Festival Amsterdam, De Doelen Big

Band Festival, So What’s Next Festival Eindhoven.

Spoken+2

Sanne Huijbregts – zang, loopstation, glockenspiel Stephanie Francke – alt/sopr saxofoon Wietse Voermans – alt saxofoon Ruben Verbruggen – bariton saxofoon Matthias van den Brande – ten. saxofoon Friso van Wijck – drums

Jazz, contemporary and classical are among the many genres the band uses to sculp-ture their narrative and filmic sound. Spoken presents a modern and exciting reper-toire, with an interesting mixture of the many beautiful sounds of the saxophone. They execute this in a personal and original style, with appreciation of the rich jazz history, lightly topped with a healthy dose of humor. At the moment, Spoken is doing the project SPOKEN + 2 with SanneHuijbregts, a talented Dutch singer. With her beautiful voice, distinctivelyrics and original compositions, it is a thrill for the band to play with her.

Larchey Zore Quartet

Charley Rose - alt saxofoon Matis Čudars - gitaar Wilfried Wilde - bas Tancréde D.Kummer - drums

A band with a lot of character, driving its ressources on jazz affected by the erosion of the new times, by the wind of energy coming down on a recent era of bands, thriving

on the amplifed scene but also on creative refnement of the 20th century and the rythmical complexity of the Indian Karnatic Music. Defnitely Metal, this band mixes in a

virtuous interpretation, improvisations and written music largely infuenced by famous bands as Meshuggah, Deftones, the Mars Volta and Fantomas.

Matthias van den Brande Group Matthias van den Brande - ten/sopr saxofoon Liya Grigoryan - piano Kimon Karoutzos - contrabas Robin van Rhijn - drums + Marнa Cristina González - fluit Maripepa Contreras Gómez - hobo Tonio Comesaña - klarinet Jochem van Hoogdalem - hoorn Tania Otero Blanco - fagot

This new project of saxophonist and composer Matthias Van den Brande offers an exciting new view on what jazz could be in the 21st century.

By adding a classical wind quintet to his existing jazz quartet, Matthias explores new pathways of colors and feelings that provide him the inspiration to write refreshing com-positions that cross bounderies of both jazz and classical music, ending up in a new and original musical universe. This way, he strives to evoke a sense of both wonder and melancholy, providing the listener a story-telling journey through the unknown.

How Town

Lennart Heyndels - zang contrabas, composities Sarah Klenes - zang Elina Silova - zang Laura Polence - zang Matis Cudars - gitaar

I want to watch a tree grow is the fourth album from the Latvian-Belgian group How Town, and definitely their most eclectic one. Consisting of compositions by all members of the band, the album has lyrics in four different languages (Russian, English, Latvian and French). Choral harmonies meet twisted bass grooves and sharp guitar sounds, before unnoticeably transforming into folk songs you might as well be whistling on your bike. Before you know it you find yourself in the middle of a compelling ballad with the rhythmic pulse of a ping pong ball and you may ask yourself: “How did I get here?”. A question which will become more and more irrelevant as you join How Town in watch-ing their tree grow.

O.W.A.L.

Charley Rose: alt saxofoon, zang Rémi Ploton: piano, synthetsizer Samuel Mastorakis: vibrafoon, live electronics Louis Navarro: contrabas Tancrède D.Kummer: drums, composities

“0.W.A.L // Otherwise We Are Lost operates in a kinematic universe, within a capricious climate; experienced by the breath of improvisation, widening gaps, embracing this un-stable atmosphere where acts prevail... to fi nally proclaim: “Dance, dance, otherwise we are lost” - P.Bausch

This organism constantly grows towards the idea of playing original material where complex frames and freeness merges into one core: the necessity of movement.”

Trempera!

Bruno Calvo, trompet Lluc Casares, tenor sax & bas klarinet Xavi Torres, piano Giuseppe Romagnoli, contrabas Joan Terol, drums

The Romans experienced their Golden Age during the reign of the god Saturn. It was a time in which neither malice, worries or the seasons existed; men lived in an eternal spring where youth, happiness, equality and innocence reigned. They enjoyed the spontaneous generosity of the earth and didn’t depend on work to live. However, when Jupiter dethroned his father, the Golden Age fi nished. The Romans yearned incessant-ly to return to this mythical time, so every year they celebrated Saturnalia, a festivity in honor of Saturn that took place in December during the winter solstice. SATURNALIA, the new album of Trempera!, evokes the spirit of such a remarkable ancient celebra-tion.
