Beste deelnemers, genodigden en bezoekers,

Het Europees Muziekfestival voor de Jeugd (EMJ) is opnieuw verheugd om u allen te mogen ontvangen op het 62ste Festival, een vocale editie. Een eeuw na de start van de eerste wereldoorlog kijken we met trots terug op 62 jaar werken aan een beter Europa. Ons Festival heeft met de hulp van muziek als universele taal ontzaglijk veel jongeren laten genieten van culturele verscheiden-heid en wederzijds respect.

In deze periode waar de Europese gedachte op diverse domeinen ernstig beproefd wordt, zijn wij nog meer gemotiveerd om de geest van dit Festival uit te dragen. Ons Festival wil geen wedstrijd zijn maar een evaluatiemoment waarbij het evenwicht tussen muzikale inspanningen en onderlinge verbroedering centraal zal staan. Zingen in een koor is reeds een groepsactiviteit. Maar dit samen beleven met duizenden zangers van diverse nationaliteiten creëert een andere dimensie.

Dit jaar verwelkomen wij speciaal het “Liverpool Signing Choir” dat ons zal laten zien hoe een koor de basis kan zijn voor de sociale inclusie van mensen die voorheen enkel vanuit de zijlijn konden meekijken. Het Festival dankt de Europese Gemeenschap, De Vlaamse Gemeenschap, de Provincie Limburg, de Gemeente Neerpelt, de diverse sponsors, de vrienden van het Festival en de talloze vrijwilligers voor hun structurele ondersteuning van dit multicultureel muziekevent. Wij hopen dat deze intense samenwerking in de toekomst mag blijven duren.

Dear participants, guests and visitors, Once again the European Music Festival for Young People (EMJ) is delighted to welcome all of you to the 62nd edition of our Festival, a vocal edition this time. One hundred years after the start of the first world war we proudly look back on 62 years of hard work to make Europe a better place to live in. With the help of the universal language of music our Festival has undoubtedly contributed to have a great number of youngsters enjoy the cultural diversity and the mutual respect.

Although currently the idea of a United Europe is seriously put to the test, we feel even more motivated to propagate the spirit of our Festival. We do not wish to be a contest but we tend to be a moment of evaluation, balancing between musical efforts and mutual fraternization. Singing in a choir is a social activity, fanning out into a riveting experience with thousands of singers from various nationalities.

This year we especially welcome the ‘Liverpool Signing Choir’, showing us how a choir is likely to develop into a social inclusion for people who previously merely stood and watched.

The Festival wishes to express its gratitude to the European Community, the Flemish Community, the Province of Limburg, the Town council of Neerpelt, the various sponsors, the friends of the Festival and the countless number of volunteers for their structural support to this multicultural music event. We hope to keep up this intense co-operation in years to come.

Kari Ala-PöllänenEspoo – FinlandKari Ala-Pöllänen behaalde zijn diploma’s voor leraar, musicologie, orkest- en koordirectie en is een veelzijdig muzikant en dirigent. Hij was muziekleraar, muzikant, dirigent, koorlid, componist en auteur van muziekboeken. Momenteel is hij artistiek directeur, jurylid, gastdirigent en docent in binnen- en buitenland.

Kari Ala-Pöllänen graduated as a school teacher and studied musicology and orchestral and choral conducting. He is a versatile musician and conductor and acted as music teacher, musician, conductor, chorister, composer and writer of music books. Jo AnnemansMerksem – BelgiëJo Annemans studeerde notenleer en vervolmaakte autodidactisch zijn muzikale kennis in de populaire vorm van meerstemmig zingen en als zanger-arrangeur van de pop-acapella-formatie Voice Male. Hij is een veelgevraagd docent voor nationale en internationale workshops.

Jo Annemans studied solfeggio and taught himself to complete his musical skills through practicing polyphonic singing as a singer-arranger of the pop-acapella group Voice Male. He is a popular lecturer at national and international workshops. www.joannemans.be

Luc Anthonis*

Antwerpen – BelgiëLuc Anthonis studeerde dwarsfluit en koordirectie aan het Koninklijk Vlaams Conservato-rium van Antwerpen. Hij vervolmaakte zich in koordirectie en werkt als leraar dwarsfluit, samenspel en instrumentaal ensemble aan de academies van Ekeren en Berchem. Hij is (gast)dirigent en jurylid in binnen- en buitenland.

Luc Anthonis studied the German flute and choral direction at the Koninklijk Vlaams Conservato-rium in Antwerp. He perfected himself at choral direction and currently teaches the German flute, ensemble playing and instrumental ensemble at the academies of Ekeren and Berchem. He is a guest conductor and jury member in Belgium and abroad.

Erika Budai*

Leuven – BelgiëErika Budai studeerde voor beroepsmusicus aan het Lemmensinstituut in Leuven en aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Brussel. Zij is componiste, docente muziekcompositie aan het Stedelijk Conservatorium in Leuven, jurylid in binnen- en buitenland en bestuurslid van het Béla Bartók archief in Brussel.

Erika Budai studied for a professional musician at the Lemmens Institute in Leuven and at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels. She is a composer, teacher music composition at the Music Conservatory of Leuven, jury member at national and international festivals and board member of the Béla Bartók Archive of Brussels.www.erikabudai.com

Ludo ClaesenHasselt – BelgiëLudo Claesen studeerde aan het Lemmensinstituut in Leuven en het Koninklijk Vlaams Muziekconservatorium te Antwerpen. Hij doceert polyfonie, orkestspel en harmonie aan de School of Arts Leuven en koordirectie en -zang aan het Conservatorium te Maastricht (NL). Hij is componist, dirigent, docent en jurylid in binnen- en buitenland.

Dr. Matthias BeckerOber-Mörlen – DuitslandDr. Matthias Becker studeerde muziekpedagogie, -directie en -wetenschappen en was leraar en assistent professor aan verschillende universiteiten in binnen- en buitenland. Hij is muzikant, jazzzanger, dirigent, arrangeur en jurylid in festivals over geheel Europa.

Dr. Matthias Becker studied music education, conducting and science of music. He had teaching assignments and was assistent professor at different universities in Germany and abroad. Kurt Bikkembergs*

Stevoort – BelgiëKurt Bikkembergs studeerde muziekpedagogie, compositie, koor- en orkestleiding aan het Lemmensinstituut te Leuven. Hij vervolmaakte zich in koorleiding en compositie en is koorleider, koordocent en artistiek leider . Hij is medewerker van zowel ons EMJ als Europa Cantat en een veelgevraagd jurylid in binnen- en buitenland.

He perfected himself at choral conducting and composition and is a choir conductor, choir teacher and artistic leader. John Damsma*

Groningen – NederlandJohn Damsma studeerde cello, schoolmuziek en orkestdirectie aan het Conservatorium te Groningen. Hij is internationaal actief als muzikant en dirigent en heeft zich toegelegd op lichte muziek en het opleiden van koordirigenten. Hij is medeauteur voor het muziekonder-wijs, gastdocent en jurylid van binnen- en buitenlandse festivals en wedstrijden.

Sabine Haenebalcke*

Vloesberg – BelgiëSabine Haenebalcke studeerde piano aan het Gents Koninklijk Muziekconservatorium en volgde cursussen koor- en orkestdirectie. Ze is dirigente en gastdirigente van meerdere koren en ensembles en een veelgevraagd stem- en directiecoach. Zij is jurylid van binnen- en buitenlandse koorwedstrijden en –tornooien.

Sabine Haenebalcke studied the piano at the Ghent Royal Conservatory and attended courses on choir and orchestra conducting; She is a conductor and guest conductor of various choirs and ensembles and a popular vocal and conducting coach. Bo JohanssonVällingby – ZwedenBo Johansson is sinds 1971 dirigent en muziekleraar bij de Adolf Fredriks Musikklasser. Hij heeft zich gespecialiseerd in kinderen jeugdkoren en treedt ook veelvuldig op als gastdi-rigent, spreker en jurylid in binnen- en buitenland. Hij is zeer actief bezig met internationale samenwerkingen tussen kinderkoren.

Bo Johansson is since 1971 conductor and music teacher at Adolf Fredriks Musikklasser. He has specialized for children’s and youth choirs and acts often as guest conductor, speaker and panel judge in Sweden and abroad. Jan CoeckHeverlee – BelgiëJan Coeck is muziekpedagoog en docent aan het Lemmensinstituut in Leuven en is tevens actief als componist, pianist en arrangeur. Zijn werken omvatten muziekstukken voor vocale en instrumentale ensembles, liederen voor kinderen, jongeren en kinderkoren, muzikale verhalen en anderstalige werken.

Jan Coeck’s a music pedagogue, and lecturer at the Lemmens Institute in Leuven and is also active as a composer, pianist and arranger. Lukáš MatoušekTehov u Říčan – Tsjechische RepubliekLukáš Matoušek studeerde directie, klarinet en compositie aan het conservatorium in Praag. Hij was muzikaal leider en redacteur van de nationale Radio en dramaturg van het Praags symfonisch orkest. Hij is docent aan de Academy of Performing Arts in Praag, componist, artistiek directeur en als gastdocent en jurylid actief in binnen- en buitenland.

Lukàs Matousek studied the clarinet, conducting and composition at the Prague Conservatory. He was musical director and editor of the national Radio in Prague and dramatist of the Prague Symphony orchestra. He is composer, artistic director and lecturer at the Academy of Performing Arts Prague. Zsuszánna MindszentyBudapest – HongarijeZsuzsánna Mindszenty studeerde muziekpedagogie en koordirectie aan de “Academy of Music Ferenc Liszt”. Ze was leraar piano, harmonie, muziekgeschiedenis en koordirectie. Ze is een koorworkshopleider, KÓTA’s voorzitter en neemt regelmatig de rol van jurylid waar in binnenlandse en buitenlandse koorwedstrijden en –festivals.

Zsuzsánna Mindszenty graduated as music teacher and choir conductor at the Academy of Music Ferenc Liszt and was teacher piano, harmony, music history and choir conducting. She is a choral workshop conductor, KÓTA’s president and jury member at national and international choir contests and - festivals.


Milan KolenaBratislava – SlowakijeMilan Kolena studeerde piano, zang en koordirectie aan het Zilina conservatorium en de “University of Musical Arts” in Bratislava. Hij is professor koordirectie en Gregoriaanse zang, artistiek directeur van koorfestivals in Bratislava en jurylid in festivals en wedstrijden in binnen- en buitenland.

Milan Kolena studied piano, singing and choir conducting at the Zilina Conservatory and the University of Musical Arts in Bratislava. He is teacher choral conducting and Gregorian chant, art director of choral music festivals in Bratislava and jury member at festivals and competitions in Slovakia and abroad.www.milankolena.sk

Aarne SaluveerHarjumaa – EstlandAarne Saluveer studeerde koordirectie en muziekpedagogie in het conservatorium van Tallinn. Hij is docent, dirigent, schoolhoofd, artistiek directeur en lector in nationale en internationale projecten. Hij werkt als jurylid in nationale en internationale koorwedstrijden en –festivals en is lid van de Estse vereniging voor muziekeducatie en het IFCM.

Aarne Saluveer studied choral conducting and music pedagogics at the Tallinn State Conservatory. He is teacher, conductor, Principal, artistic director and lecturer in national and international projects. He works as adjudicator in several national and international choral contests and festivals and is member of the Estonian Society for Music Education and of IFCM.

Pierangelo PelucchiBergamo – ItaliëPierangelo Pelucchi studeerde piano, koormuziek en -directie, compositie, zang en klave-cimbel aan de conservatoria van Verona, Bologna, Bari, Salzburg en Wenen. Hij is arrangeur, workshopdocent, publicist en docent aan de conservatoria van Udine en Bergamo. Hij is jurylid in binnen- en buitenlandse wedstrijden en –festivals.

Pierangelo Pelucchi studied the piano, choral music and - conducting, composition, singing and the harpsichord at the Conservatories of Verona, Bologna, Bari, Salzburg and Vienna. He is an arranger, workshop teacher, publicist and lecturer at the conservatories of Udine and Bergamo. He is a juror at Italian and foreign contests and festivals.

Zoltán Pad Budapest – HongarijeZoltán Pad studeerde koordirectie, leraar en muziektheorie aan het “Ferenc Liszt Academy” in Budapest. Hij doceerde koordirectie, vocale kamermuziek en muziek van de 20ste eeuw. Hij dirigeerde koren en masterclasses in binnen- en buitenland, is artistiek directeur van de koorcompetitie in Debrecen en hoofddirigent van het Hongaars radiokoor.

Zoltán Pad took his degree in choral conducting, school teaching and music theory at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Budapest. He has been teaching choir conducting, chamber singing and 20th century music. He conducted choirs and master classes in Hungary and abroad, is artistic director of the Choir competition in Debrecen and chief conductor of the Hungarian Radio Choir.

Noëlle SchepensLier – BelgiëNoëlle Schepens volgde een opleiding muziekpedagogie, zang, koordirectie en opera aan het Lemmensinstituut te Leuven, het Koninklijk Conservatorium van Antwerpen en de Operastudio in Gent. Ze is docente vocale training, koordirigente, stemcoach en jurylid. Ze is bezielster van kunstateliers en professioneel internationaal zangeres.

Noëlle Schepens was educated to teach music pedagogics, singing, choir conducting and opera at the Lemmens Institute in Leuven, the Royal Conservatory in Antwerp and the Opera Studio in Ghent. She teaches vocal training, is choir conductor, vocal coach and jury member. She is the inspirator of arts workshops and a professional international singer.

Krzysztof SzydziszPoznan – PolenKrzysztof Szydzisz is dirigent, musicoloog, specialist in stemvorming, logopedist en cultureel manager. Hij is professor en hoofd van de afdeling stemvorming aan de Muziekacademie in Bydgoszcz. Sinds 1998 is hij artistiek leider van het Internationale Festival van Universiteitskoren ´Universitas Cantat´.

Krzysztof Szydzisz is choirmaster, musicologist, specialist in voice production, speech therapist and cultural manager. He is professor and head of the department of voice production at the Academy of Music in Gydgoszcz. Since 1998 he is the artistic director of the International Festival of University Choirs ‘Universitas Cantat’.

Fritz Ter WeyAachen – DuitslandFritz ter Wey was departementshoofd koordirectie aan de muziekacademie van Detmold. Hij is oprichter en artistiek directeur van meerdere internationaal erkende ensembles en docent en gastdirigent in binnen- en buitenland. Hij is een jurylid van binnen- en buitenlandse koorwedstrijden en –festivals.

Fritz Ter Wey is head of the Department of choral conducting at the music academy of Detmold. He is the founder and artistic director of several internationally acknowledged ensembles and he is a lecturer and a guest conductor in Germany and abroad. He is a jury member of national and foreign choir contests and festivals.

Johan Van BouwelenBornem – BelgiëJohan Van Bouwelen studeerde notenleer, harmonie, contrapunt en koorleiding aan het Lemmensinstituut te Leuven waar hij nu als docent verschillende koren en koorprojecten leidt. Hij is freelance dirigent, cantor van de kathedraal van Mechelen en als docent, atelierleider en jurylid actief in binnen- en buitenland.

Johan Van Bouwelen studied solfeggio, harmony , counterpoint and choir conducting at the Lemmensinstitute in Leuven where he currently acts as a teacher of several choirs and choral projects. He is a freelance conductor, cantor at the Mechelen cathedral, and a lecturer, studio director and jury member in Belgium and abroad.

Jan VuyeGent – BelgiëJan Vuye studeerde orgel, koordirectie en koorleiding aan het Lemmensinstituut en de Katholieke Universiteit in Leuven. Hij is als docent verbonden aan de muziekacademies van Heist-op-den-berg en Waregem en spreker tijdens lezingen, stages en workshops. Hij is dirigent, gastdirigent en actief als pianist, repetent en vocal coach.

Jan Vuye studied the organ, choir directing and conducting at the Lemmensinstitute and at the Catholic University of Leuven. As a tutor he is part of the music academies of Heist-op-den-Berg and Waregem and he is a lecturer at numerous lectures, trainings and workshops. Marijke van KlaverenVoorburg – NederlandMarijke van Klaveren studeerde koordirectie, schoolmuziek, orgel en kerkmuziek aan de conser-vatoria van Den Haag en Rotterdam. Ze is dirigent en als docent ensemblezang, muziektheorie en solfège verbonden aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag. Ze is docente van koorprojecten en jurylid in binnen- en buitenlandse koorwedstrijden en –festivals.

Marijke van Klaveren studied choir conducting, school music, the organ and church music at the conservatories of The Hague and Rotterdam. She is a conductor and as an ensemble singing teacher, music theory teacher and solfeggio teacher part of the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. She is a tutor of choral projects and jury member of choir contests and festivals in Holland and abroad.www.acva.nl

Silvère van LieshoutVoorburg – NederlandSilvère van Lieshout is directeur van de Academy of Vocal Arts in Den Haag en dirigent van het kinderkoor Musicanti en het Vocaal Ensemble Cantamare. Hij is auteur van een methode voor kinderkoor, ‘Jongleren’, om kinderen en volwassenen van blad te leren zingen en is tevens oprichter van het Nationaal Kinder- en Jeugdkoor.

Silvère van Lieshout is director of the Academy of Vocal Arts in The Hague and conductor of the children’s choir Musicanti and the vocal ensemble Cantamare. He is author of ‘Jongleren’, a method to teach children and adults how to read music and is also founder of the National Children’s and Youth Choir.www.acva.nl

Hans Van den BrandBerkel-Enschot - NederlandHans Van den Brand studeerde schoolmuziek, orgel, piano en koordirectie aan het Fontys Conservatorium en volgde meestercursussen orkestdirectie en arrangeren. Hij is docent muziekdidactiek en koordirectie licht vocaal. Hij is koordirigent, artistiek directeur, componist, gastdocent en jurylid in binnen- en buitenland.

Hans Van den Brand studied school music, the organ, the piano and choir conducting at the Fontys Conservatory and attended master classes orchestra conducting and arranging. He is a music didactics and light vocal choir conducting teacher. He is a choir conductor, artistic director, composer, guest lecturer and jury member in Holland and abroad.

Gedurende het werkjaar wordt het festivalbestuur op muzikaal vlak ondersteund door een artistieke commissie. Deze commissie, samengesteld uit mensen die professioneel actief zijn in de verschillende muzieksectoren, werkt mee in de voorbereiding van de komende festivaleditie.

The festival-board is permanently supported by an artistic commission, the members of which are professionals in various musical sectors, preparing for the forthcoming festival edition.

Wolfgang ZieglerBad Vöslau – OostenrijkWolfgang Ziegler werkte, na het beëindigen van zijn pedagogische studies, als assistent in muziekeducatie, violist en componist van elektronische muziek in de VS. Terug in Oostenrijk werd hij koordirigent en –componist van werken die door meerdere internationale koren en festivals werden opgevoerd.

Wolfgang Ziegler worked, after finishing pedagogical studies, as an assistant in music education, violist and electronic music composer in the USA. Back in Austria he became choral director and composer of pieces commissioned by international choirs and festivals.www.wozimusic.com

Patrick WindmoldersBerchem – BelgiëPatrick Windmolders studeerde regentaat muzikale opvoeding aan het Lemmensinstituut te Leuven en harmonie, muziekgeschiedenis en koordirectie aan het conservatorium te Antwerpen. Hij is dirigent, projecten atelierleider en leraar koor, muziekesthetica, creatief musiceren en muziekleer aan de Kunsthumaniora van Antwerpen.

Patrick Windmolders studied to be a music educationalist at the Lemmensinstitute in Leuven and harmony, music history and choir conducting at the conservatory in Antwerp. He is a conductor, project and studio director and choir tutor, music esthetics teacher, creative music making teacher and general music theory teacher at the Arts Secondary School in Antwerp.

Voor de wimpelreeks komen enkel koren in aanmerking die tijdens een internationaal festival een opvallend resultaat behaalden of minstens een grondige artistieke ervaring kunnen aantonen.

To qualify for the pennant series the choirs must have gained a remarkable result at an international festival or at least be able to show a thorough artistic experience.

De maximum leeftijd van de deelnemers bedraagt in de reeks A 14 jaar, in de reeks D 15 jaar en in de reeksen B, C, E, F en G 25 jaar.

The maximum age in the category A is fixed on 14 years, in the category D on 15 years and in the categories B, C, E, F and G on 25 years.

Een gerenommeerde, internationale jury beoordeelt op een constructieve manier de muzikale prestaties van de deelnemers. Na het Festival wordt een juryverslag verstuurd.

A prominent international jury will evaluate the performances of the participants from a constructive angle. A jury report will be sent after the Festival.

Het diploma vermeldt:

Koren met 90% of meer ontvangen tevens de festivalmedaille.Groepen die op eigen verzoek deelnemen ‘buiten categorie’ ontvangen enkel een getuigschrift van deelname.

Op 14 maart 2013 hebben wij afscheid moeten nemen van Vic Nees, een postmodernist avant la lettre in de internationale koorwereld. Voor het EMJ componeerde hij 21 plichtliederen voor 15 festivaledities en twee liederen voor de Ola-Alo bundel. Op de vraag of een plichtstuk in het vocale luik van het festival nog een betekenis heeft, gaf hij volgend antwoord: “Neerpelt is wellicht het enige, maar alleszins het voornaamste platform van waarop nieuwe Vlaamse koorliteratuur over Europa uitzwerft. Andere festivals introduceren buitenlandse muziek in Vlaanderen; Neerpelt exporteert ze. Beide zijn belangrijk maar het tweede is quasi uniek.” Uit diepe erkentelijkheid dragen wij de nieuwe bundel plichtwerken 2014 aan hem op. In navolging van zijn advies werden de compositie-opdrach-ten voor deze nieuwe bundel enerzijds gegeven aan componisten met reeds ruime ervaring in deze materie en anderzijds aan nieuw talent.

On March 14, 2013 we had to take leave of Mr. Vic Nees, a postmodernist avant la letter in the international world of choirs. For the EMJ he composed 21 compulsory songs for 15 festival-editions and two songs for the Ola-Alo bundle. When asked whether a compulsory song was still meaningful for the vocal part of the Festival he replied: “Neerpelt is probably the only and surely the most important platform from which new Flemish choral literature is launched into Europe. Other festivals introduce foreign music to Flanders whereas Neerpelt exports it. Both are equally important but the latter is as good as unique. “ With our sincerest acknowledgements we dedicate the new bundle of compulsory songs 2014 to him. Following his advice the compo-sition-commissions for this new bundle were instructed to on the one hand experienced composers and on the other hand to new talents.

Deelnemers in onze reeks G brengen als verplichte compositie een eigen, originele bewerking van het oude volkslied “Vier weverkens”.De uitgave met de plichtliederen van 2014 is verkrijgbaar via ons festivalsecretariaat of aan de ingang van de verschillende concertzalen.

Participants in the G-category perform as compulsary composition their own, original arrangement of the old folksong “Vier weverkens”. The publication with the 2014 compulsory songs is available via the festival secretariat and at the entrance to the concert halls.

The Kick-off, new since last year, is the official start of the 62nd European Music Festival for Young People. All participants and pupils from the local primary schools, get together in a bubbling Festi-val-hall in a relaxing, chilling and friendly atmosphere. Here everyone is welcome to enjoy a sparkling show with an abundance of music.

17.00 – 00.30 uur Openingsfeest “A Taste of Neerpelt” Marktplein, Neerpelt Na de succesvolle eerste editie, laten we ook dit jaar iedereen proe-ven van “A Taste of Neerpelt”, een totaalspektakel met muziek, vuur-werk en culinaire hoogstandjes. Voor dit openingsfeest heeft het EMJ de handen in elkaar geslagen met haar culturele partners, de gemeente Neerpelt en plaatstelijke handelaars en verenigingen. Ie-dereen is reeds vanaf 17.00 uur van harte welkom op het Marktplein van Neerpelt met een lege maag en een verlangen naar spektakel. “A Taste of Neerpelt” belooft opnieuw een uniek event te worden en zal Neerpelt en het EMJ doen bruisen vanaf de eerste minuut!

After its succesful first edtion last year, we again let everyone enjoy “A Taste of Neerpelt”, an event with music, fireworks and tasty snacks and drinks. This opening-event is a co-operative production of EMJ and its cultural partners, the town-council of Neerpelt and local traders and organisations. Everybody is welcome from 5.00 p.m. on in the market-square of Neerpelt to enjoy music and food. Neerpelt and EMJ will be bubbling as from the very first minute on.

Voice Male brengt heerlijke wereldhits in een originele a capella versie en tovert zonder problemen het marktplein om tot een echt volksfeest.Voor het EMJ stelden ze een eigenzinnig programma samen, gebaseerd op hun grootste successen. Op de tonen van Voice Male wordt het 62ste Festival geopend met elegant en perfect getimed vuurwerk uit alle hoeken van het marktplein. Dit uniek muzikaal totaalspektakel sluit het optreden van Voice Male af en opent feestelijk deze vocale editie van het Europees Muziekfestival voor de Jeugd.

In samenwerking met onze Vlaamse koorfederatie “Koor en Stem” organiseert het EMJ een grootse sing-in “Sing a song”. Jeugdkoren uit heel Vlaanderen, aangevuld met buitenlandse EMJ-koren, vormen speciaal voor deze avond een gelegenheids-koor. De voorbereidende repetities kennen hun hoogtepunt in deze sing-in voor een internationaal publiek. Tijdens Sing a song zullen alle overige aanwezige EMJ-koren samen met dit gelegenheids-koor je laten voelen wat het is om samen te zingen. Muziek als internationale taal van vreugde en vriendschap. Onze twee EMJ-presentatoren zorgen voor de vrolijke noot en begeleiden je samen met dirigent Ludo Claesen door de onvergetelijke avond.

In co-operation with the Flemisch choral federation “Koor en Stem” EMJ organizes a grand sing-in “Sing a song”. Youth choirs from all over Flanders , plus a number of foreign EMJ-choirs, will team up to form a large choir, especially for this event. The preparatory rehearsals will highlight in this sing-in for an international audience. In the course of Sing a song all participating EMJ choirs together with the one-event-choir will make you experience what it feels like to sing together. Music as the international language of joy and friendship. Our own EMJ announcers will make sure you will enjoy an entertaining and memorable evening together with conductor Mr. Ludo Claesen .

Voor de organisatie van de festiviteiten op de tweede avond van de Festivaleditie van 2014 werkt het EMJ samen met de service-clubs Kiwanis Noord-Oost en Kiwanis Bocholt Kristoffel.Na de culinaire verwennerij van “A Taste of Neerpelt” op donder-dag, is het vrijdagavond tijd om uit de bol te gaan op “Let’s Taste Again”. We starten met dit gratis openluchtfestival op het markt-plein van Neerpelt na afloop van de feestelijke parade.

For the organisation of the festivities on the second night of the Festival edition of 2014, the EMJ cooperates with service clubs Kiwanis North-east and Kiwanis Bocholt Kristoffel.After Thursday’s culinary delights at “A Taste of Neerpelt”, we will celebrate the good times at the “Let’s Taste Again“. Gezellig nakaarten over het afgelopen festival of nog even de benen loszwieren voor een lange busrit: dat is wat “Happy To Gather” is. De muziekformatie DOMINO zorgt op een eigenzinnige manier voor pure live muziek. Het zal moeilijk zijn om niet mee te swingen. Laat je dus maar meevoeren op hits van vroeger en nu. Bovendien bepaalt het publiek het verloop van de avond met verzoeknummers, zang en dans. Het wordt een sfeervolle en gezellige avond om het EMJ waardig af te sluiten.

VERBROEDERINGSCONCERTENFRATERNIZATION CONCERTS

Sinds vele jaren brengen de verbroederingsconcerten sfeer en muziek in Neerpelt en haar buurdorpen en laten zij een breed publiek kennismaken met de uitgebreide variatie in Europese culturen. Vrijwilligers uit Grote Heide, Herent, St.-Huibrechts-Lille, Overpelt, Hamont-Achel en Lommel organiseren enthousiast mee aan deze prachtige verbroederingsfeesten. De toegang van alle verbroederingsconcerten is gratis en iedereen is van harte welkom! Dus geniet ervan!

Since many years the fraternization concerts have created atmosphere and music in Neerpelt and the surrounding villages; they confront wide and diverse audiences with an extensive variety of European cultures. Volunteers from Grote Heide, Herent, Sint-Huibrechts-Lille , Overpelt, Hamont-Achel and Lommel work with enthousiasm on the organization of these wonderful fraternization events. There is no admission fee and everybody is welcome. So enjoy!

WORKSHOPSNaar analogie met de vorige vocale festivaledities zal het EMJ, met de steun van Koor & Stem, diverse koorworkshops organiseren. Jongeren kunnen er met veel enthousiasme kennis maken met nieuwe muzikale uitdagingen en zullen er samen zingen met kinderen jeugdkoren van diverse nationaliteiten. Zo leren deelnemers het Vlaamse koorrepertoire en talrijke voor hen onbekende composities kennen.

Op vrijdag 2, zaterdag 3 en zondag 4 mei zullen 26 koren deelnemen aan 7 workshops onder de deskundige leiding van Koor & Stem docenten. Er wordt dit jaar o.a. gewerkt met het liedboek Ola-Alo en met composities van de onlangs overleden Vlaamse componist Vic Nees.Daarnaast wordt op zondag een workshop voorzien in samenwerking met het Signing Choir uit Liverpool. Onder de deskundige leiding van Catherine Hegarty zullen onze festivaldeelnemers kunnen samenwerken met jongeren met een auditieve beperking en ervaren dat muziek ook de fysieke grenzen overstijgt.

As in the previous vocal editions EMJ organizes a range of choral workshops supported by Koor & Stem. Youngsters are offered the opportunity to enthusiastically get to know new musical challenges and to sing together with children’s and youth choirs from various nati-onalities. Thus participants get acquainted with the Flemish choral repertory and numerous to them unknown compositions.

On Friday 2, Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 May, 26 choirs will participate in 7 workshops presi-ded over by Koor & Stem coaches. This current year the Ola-Alo songbook will be their gui-deline and the same goes for compositions by the late Flemish composer Vic Nees (✝2013).Also on Sunday there will be a workshop in co-operation with the Signing Choir from Liverpool. Mrs. Catherine Hegarty will confront festival participants with youngsters who suffer from disabled hearing and consequently they will experience that music surpasses physical restrictions.

Het EMJ zal tijdens onze 62ste Festivaleditie, in samenwerking met Koor en Stem, een masterclass koordirectie organiseren. Studenten koordirectie zullen tijdens het festivalweekend en onder leiding van enkele gerenommeerde dirigenten en componisten verschillende technieken aangeleerd krijgen. Ook zullen ze, naast de vaste EMJ-jury, een schaduwjury vormen waardoor ze in staat zijn de eigen bevindingen te screenen met deze van de professionele juryleden. Daarnaast krijgen ze de gelegenheid om op korte tijd vele koren te ontmoeten en te analyseren alsook een grondige analyse te maken van de EMJ-plichtliederen. Tot slot kunnen ze contacten leggen met nationale en internationale juryleden, dirigenten en componisten waardoor hun eigen beoordelingen op een professionele manier getoetst kunnen worden. Deze masterclass zal onder de professionele leiding staan van Roland Coryn.

In a co-operation with Koor en Stem a masterclass Choral Directing will be organized by EMJ in the course of the 60th edition. Throughout the festival weekend Choral Directing students will be taught different techniques by renowned conductors and composers. Moreover they will function as a kind of shadow jury next to the regular EMJ jury which will allow them to compare their own findings with the professional jury-members. It also offers them the opportunity to meet many choirs in a short time and to analyse the compulsory EMJ songs. Finally they get the opportunity to contact national and international members of the jury, conductors and composers so as to check their own experiences in a professional way.This Masterclass will be professionally headed by Roland Coryn.

Uniek tijdens deze vocale festivaleditie is de deelname van het Liverpool Signing Choir dat door het EMJ als bijzonder gastkoor werd uitgenodigd. Dit koor, dat voor een derde bestaat uit mensen met een auditieve beperking, heeft zichzelf tot doel gesteld om de schoonheid die in gebarentaal schuilt uit te dragen via de universele taal van de muziek en om op deze manier ook de sociale integratie van slechthorenden en doven te stimuleren.De leeftijden van de koorjongeren, van wie sommigen volledig doof zijn, variëren van 7 tot 24 jaar. In 2012 hadden zij de eer om op te treden tijdens de Olympische Spelen en de Paralympics in Londen.Het Signing Choir neemt niet deel aan de juryconcerten maar het EMJ wil hen onderdompelen in de uitbundige muzikale verbroedering en de unieke Neerpeltse festivalsfeer. Tijdens de proclamaties, de happening en een workshop laten we onze deelnemers en publiek kennismaken met dit unieke koor en hun hartverwarmende manier van musiceren.

Quite unique in this year’s vocal edition is the participation of the Liverpool Signing Choir who have been invited to EMJ as our special guests. The choir in which one in three singers suffers from auditive restrictions, aim at propagating the beauty of sign-language via the universal language of music in order to stimulate the social integration of the hard-hearing and the deaf. The singers some of whom are comple-tely deaf, are aged 7 to 25. In 2012 the choir took part in the Olympic and Paralympic festivities in London.The Signing Choir does not participate in the jury concerts but EMJ wants them to fully experience the exuberant musical fraternization and the unique Neerpelt Festival atmosphere. In the course of the proclamations, the happening and in one workshop audiences and participants will get to know this unique choir and their heart-warming way of making music.

Dit festival zonder wedstrijdgehalte is een van Europa’s grootste culturele festivals waar een variëteit aan kunsten voor kinderen en jongeren aan bod komt. De jeugd van Europa wordt geholpen om “kleine ambassadeurs” van een verenigd Europa te worden met een beter begrip voor elkaars culturen en levenswijzen, tradities, volkskunde en kunsten en dit door deel te nemen en op te treden tijdens het festival.

This meeting, which is not a contest, is one of the biggest European cultural festivals of various arts for children and youth. We intend to help the youth to become “little ambassadors” of a united Europe, having better understanding of each other’s culture and lifestyle, traditions, folk, arts by participating and performing in the meeting.

De Internationale Koorwedstrijd van VlaanderenThe International Choir Contest of FlandersMaasmechelen, België (BE)

De Internationale Koorwedstrijd van Vlaanderen vindt tweejaarlijks plaats in de Limburgse gemeente Maasmeche-len. Voor deze wedstrijd worden topkoren uit de hele wereld geselecteerd die ieder twee concerten zullen afwerken, beoordeeld door een internationale professionele jury. Naast een verplicht concertprogramma zingen ze eveneens een programma samengesteld uit een vrije keuze aan liederen uit de profane koorliteratuur.

The International Choir Contest of Flanders is organized every two years in the village of Maasmechelen. Top-choirs from all over the world are selected to present two concerts, judged by an international professional jury. Besides an obligatory concert programme the choirs also perform their own programme with a selection of songs from the profane choral literature.

De Bratislava Music Agency (BMA) werd 9 jaar geleden opgericht en is de eerste organisatie in Bratislava die internationale culturele festivals voor kinderen, jongeren en volwassen ensembles ontwikkelde.Ze bieden tot 8 festivals per jaar, elk voor een specifieke doelgroep van deelnemers (sacrale muziek, volksmuziek, advent- & kerstmuziek, gregoriaanse muziek, muziek door jeugdensembles, ...). Deze festivals zijn open voor internationale koren, muziek- en dans-gezelschappen die worden beoordeeld door internationale professionals. De BMA stimuleert culturele uitwisseling tussen jonge kunstenaars en de muzikale stad van Bratislava en de ontwikkeling van vriendschappen door middel van culturele en muzikale programma’s.

The Bratislava Music Agency (BMA), established nine years ago, is the first organization in Bratislava to develop international cultural festivals for children, youth & adult ensembles. They offer up to 8 festivals per year, each for a specific target of partici-pants (musica sacra, folk music, advent & Christmas music, Gregorian chant, music by youth ensembles, …). These festivals are open to international choirs, music and dance ensembles who are adjudicated by international professionals. The BMA encourages cultural exchanges between young artists and the musical city of Bratislava while developing friendships through cultural and musical programs.
