The KCU Academic Center renovation transformed an under-utilized 1,500 seat auditorium into a state-of-the-art learning facility and hub for student activity. The design team suggested stacking two lecture halls within the footprint of the existing auditorium.

The unique geometry of the existing space posed creative constraints on design solutions. As a leading medical campus striving to attract and retain talent, University leadership wanted to create a significant departure from previous campus architecture. Cleverly nick-named the “heart transplant”, the design team looked to connect biological forms to the architectural articulation of the new spaces.

The flowing, curved auditorium within the lower lecture hall served as the primary expression of the “heart”. The design team worked in partnership with acoustic plaster specialists to develop the curvilinear elements within the constraints of the existing space and products.

KCU leadership challenged the design team to reuse as much of the existing wood paneling and existing finishes as possible. Working with a local craftsman, wood was repurposed and used as wall finish within the upper lecture hall and student gathering spaces.

Previous executive suite resided outside of the corporate office in an adjacent building. Looking to simply refresh the corporate office and leave the executive suite untouched, the design team sought to further understand how a physically separated spatial relationship between associates and company leadership impacted daily operations, productivity and company cohesion.

The multi-phase project utilized design solutions to promote health and wellness initiatives valued by company leadership. Integrating the executive suite into the corporate office occurred in the second phase of design.

In an effort to understand Steinway & Sons’ corporate brand identity, research was conducted to best tailor a new corporate headquarters to the client’s mission, vision, and values.

Personal inspiration for the design originated from the Dumbarton Oaks property in Washington D.C.; this property contains a beautiful sequence of formal gardens and unique architectural elements that captures the essence of Steinway & Sons’ pianos. It is almost as if that traversing through the property, the elegant ring of Steinway & Son’s pianos can be heard anywhere.

Office typical floor plans were established for various work modes. Soft conferencing and music practice rooms were incorporated as well.

Though site location did not allow for exterior windows in all private offices, materials were chosen in light, neutral tones to enhance spatial experience.

Expansive windows surround the open office area providing fresh, natural light to the central core of the building.

The lobby is regal, elegant, and stately to reflect the Steinway and Sons’ brand. A custom lighting feature resembling piano keys delicately suspends over the reception desk. The generously sized lobby serves as a pre-function gathering space for performances in the first floor concert venues.

Complementing the interior environment, the exterior is refined in detail as well; featuring an outdoor courtyard with performance space.

located in matagalpa, nicaragua; this rehabilitation houses a cullinary commu-nity kitchen with guest dining, accommo-dations for educational groups and a permanent teacher residence.

Revitalizing the existing column-truss structural system as the framework for the new design, wall partitions were intentionally eliminated or kept low to allow for maximum natural air ventilation.

Original architecture, furnishings, and accessories were modeled in Revit to better understand the complexity of the program; additional entourage gathered from databases.

Textural analysis further synthesized the information gathered from the project site, establishing the inconsistency of the street space enclosure. It was recorded as texture made of time and matter through video recording. This video was captured along the entirety of the Avenue by car. Still frames from the video were established at set distances, and then mapped on a figure ground to demonstrate where each frame was taken.

Frames were transferred into black and white then reduced in opacity. Each section of street was superimposed to create one composition.

When comparing north and south series of superimposed images different conditions of street composition occurs. It is observed that the eastern edge conditions yield the most interesting and identifiable condition within the street.

Unlike any other portion the surrounding areas within these images conditions an intensive industrial node.

Visible signage study analyzes diverse languages publicly apparent along the Avenue. Frequency of signage is also graphically represented. Larger font size indicates greater frequency of each language.

Though information yielded beneficial to understand commercial signage and language prevalence, data was cross referenced with demographic data to further understand the community diversity.
