President’s Message On behalf of my executive committee, I would like to extend our sincere thanks to our Telugu community in Central Ohio for giving us a chance to serve you all. We all enjoyed working as a team in serving our community. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the previous committees who worked hard for the last several years in taking this organization to such a prestigious level. My executive committee also tried hard in bringing special recognition to our organization within our community and from outside our community. We tried our best during our time and brought not only our regular activities but also some special things to remember. Apart from our regular events Sankranthi, Ugadi, Summer Picnic and Deepavali, we are proud to announce that other special events took place during our period. These are (1) A visit by Honorable Minister Pedi Reddy from A.P. Tourism, (2) Sponsoring Sri Venkateswara Swami Kalyanotsavam in Temple, (3) Sri Nagaphani Sarma’s Program, (4) Sri Sirivennala Seetarama Sastry’s Program, and (5) Swaramadhuri Telugu Musical Concert by G. Anand Team. Also, from technology aspect, we brought a new web site with enhanced way of communicating with the community, power point presentation mixing with cultural events to enhance communication, and a new look to the news letter. From the administrative aspect, our team has put an effort in registering TACO as a non-profit organization with the State, bringing a new constitution, and initiating a tax-exempt process with IRS. I appreciate my executive committee in showing enthusiasm and interest in accomplishing all the above issues. My committee could not be just successful without the help of the Sponsors (Look inside the cover page for a list of these people), all Advertisers (as listed in Page 4) and all our Volunteers (listed in next page). Our sincere thanks to all of these members. (pitta konchem, koota ghanam) Sparrow (pitta) is a small bird (konchem) but the chirp (koota) is very loud (ghanam). This proverb tells us that appearances can deceptive and it would not be wise to judge purely by appearances.

(kukka tOka vankara)

Incorrigible people are compared to the tail of a dog (kukka tOka) which is naturally curved (vankara) and cannot be straightened, meaning that it is not possible to change a person's innate nature or in-born qualities. A dog's tail remains straight so long as one holds it and the moment it is released it goes back to its original position. People may sound convinced momentarily, but left to themselves they will revert to their ideas.

Wife doesn't exist (aalu laedu), no childbirth has taken place (choolu laedu), yet the son is named as "Somalingam" (koDuku paeru somalingam). This relates to the imaginative human nature of building castles in the air.

Literally means that inaccessible (andani) grapes (draakshapaLLu) are sour (pullana). It reveals the human nature of rationalizing that ambitions unachievable are unworthy.

It describes aptly a situation where it is a matter of life and death for one, while it is fun for the other. TACO Youth Achievements

Kavitha Tipirneni

Kavitha Tipirneni, recent graduate of Hilliard Darby High School, daughter of Eswara Prasad and Jayasri Tipirneni, is attending University of Michigan at Ann Arbor starting this fall on a full tennis scholarship. She is a much accomplished nationally ranked tennis scholarship and also nationally ranked tennis player with a good academic standing. The following are some of the highlights of her accomplishments.

She won Ohio Valley Tennis Association Districts six years in a row and won the Mid Western Tennis Championships two years in a row. Nationally, she won the K-Swiss national tournament, finalist in Easter Bowl both in singles and doubles, semifinalist in singles and finalist in doubles at the National Indoor Championships. In 1996, represented USA in an International Junior Championships held at Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Ranked as high as #3 in the USA in 1996 in juniors. She won the Ohio High School Division 1 Tennis Championship in 1998 and was named Central Ohio player of the year for 3 years. Columbus Dispatch “Athlete of the Week” for 3 years. Academically she has been an honor student, member and president of National Honor Society and recipient of “Scholor Athlete” award for Central Ohio. Involved in community service by giving motivational speeches to several Central Ohio elementary and middle schools. Graduated with GPA of 3.8 and looking forward to furthering her interests at U of M. Neal K. Bobba

Kuchipudi - The Divine Dance Form Andhra Pradesh is associated with the divine dance form, Kuchipudi. It is famous for its grace, elegance and charm. It was Abdul Tana Shah, the grand nephew of Sultan Mohammed Quli Qutb Shah of the Qutb Shahi dynasty, who bestowed the name of “Kuchipudi” upon this renowned dance form of Andhra Pradesh. It was on one of Tana Shah’s visits to Kuchipudi, a small village in Krishna district, that the king realized that it was imperative to provide water for the villagers. He ordered a well to be dug. Overwhelmed by his majesty’s kindness, the villagers expressed their gratitude for his generous gesture with a performance of this native dance. Thus the name of this village was conferred upon this dance form by Tana Shah as a token of his appreciation. Since then Kuchipudi has been known.

Kuchipudi is a perfect balance between three aspects- Nritta, Nritya and Natya, each being equivalent in nature. The Nritta is a rhythmic sequence that concludes a song or a verse; the Nritya or sabdams in which the rhythmic passages are followed by interpretations alternately; Natya is a complete dance drama with a story-line and various characters. The Kuchipudi dancer is a multiple person on the stage and this multiplicity is achieved by the swift change of mime which depends more on the combination of the naturalism of the dramatic content and the symbolism of the poetic intensity of feeling of an episode. The consequence of this is the emphasis laid on the dynamics of movement and expressionism of feeling. The use of laya (rhythm), thandava (foot steps and rhythm) and abhinaya (expression) is common with the Kuchipudi artist. But Kuchipudi is characteristic for its abhinaya or expressions Angika, vachika, satuka and ahaarya are the four types of abhinaya or actions

A very charming form of abhinaya is the satvikabhinaya which includes three steps. It begins with facial expressions and eye movements, followed by hand gestures and eventually movements of the entire body.

Although Kuchipudi was pushed to the backseat with the advent of motion pictures in the 1930s, fortunately, the renaissance of the glory of Kuchipudi was possible with the dedicated and untiring efforts of the patrons of the arts. Kuchipudi is also loved by the west and this dance form has always fascinated them. Kuchipudi, the dainty dance form of Andhra Pradesh is profoundly aesthetic and the experience of watching it live is most exhilarating and cannot be expressed in words. !!

Perini Thandavam

The Perini Thandavam is an aesthetically performed male dance of the warriors. This dance form was usually enacted before the idol of Lord Shiva by the warriors before they left for the battle field. The dance form, Perini, reached its pinnacle during the rule of the Kakatiyas who established their dynasty at Warangal and ruled for almost two centuries. The sculptures of the Ramappa Temple at Warangal throw considerable light on this delightful male dance form. Dedicated to the supreme dancer, Lord Shiva, Perini dance signifies invocation or “Prerna”. The Perini is a vigorous dance done to the resounding beats of drums.

The group of dancers moves to the sound of laya and drive themselves to a state of mental abstraction where they feel the power of Shiva in their body. While invoking Shiva, each dancer offers his body and invites Shiva to come into him and dance through him..The Perini Thandavam is indeed believed to be the most invigorating and intoxicating male dance form and watching a live performance is both enthralling and a spiritual experience by itself.

Andhra Natyam The traditional dance form of Andhra Natyam is as old as people of Andhra and dates back to 2000 years. Originally it was a temple dance performed by devadasis as a form of worship. This was the lasya or female tradition of dance which was characterised by a rich display of foot work and abhinaya. But as far as abhinaya is concerned, Andhra Natyam is far superior where as the highly stylised costumes make-up and ornamentation are a modern day evolution, temple dancers never wore any elaborate costumes except simple sarees. Infact, Andhra Natyam is similar in style to Bharatanatyam. Both these dance forms originated in the temple dance of the South and were performed in all Shaiva and Vaishnava temples. These two dance forms were based on Nandikesa's "Abhinava Darpana" and Bharata's "Natya Shastra". While in Andhra, temple dances were discontinued, in Tamil Nadu they were formalised as Bharat Natyam, a dance which became a symbol of cultural enlightenment.

Etymology of the word Telugu The most popular explanation that is given to the word telugu is that it comes from the word trilinga, i.e., from the three temples at

Srisailam, Drakasharamam, and Kaleshwaram. However, not many scholars accept this view. Let us examine some of them here.

• Khandavalli Lakshmi Ranjanam : It probably comes from the word talaing . Since tala refers to head, talaings refers to leaders. Probably, talaings were civilized people and conquered the tribals in the area of current Andhra pradesh. Hence the name talaings. Later this must have given rise to the words telungu and trilinga .

• Godavarti Ramadasu Some say that the word telugu comes from the Sanskrit forms trilinga or trikalinga: Actually, the word kalinga itself is a Dravidian word. In Kui language, rice is called Kulinga. Since Kuis were mainly rice eaters, Aryans might have called them kulingas or kalingas.

• Marepalli Ramachandra Shastri In Gondi languahge, unga is form for plural. telu means white. Hence, telunga probably refers to people who are white in complexion.

• Ganti Jogi Somayaji

ten refers to south in Proto-Dravidian. Hence tenungu refers to Southerners.

Which of the two words is older? telugu or tenugu ? Some say that tenugu is older than telugu because Nannaya used the word tenugu and Ketana who is younger than

Nannaya used the word telugu in his Andhra Bhaashaa Bhushanam. Malliya Raechana wrote a grammar book (Lakshana Granthamu) called Kavi Janaashrayamu. But he didn’t use this word in the place of ‘praasa’ anywhere, so we are not sure what he really used.

The popular notion is that the first person to use the word trilinga is Vidyanaatha in Kakatiya era. Actually, the first person to use the word trilinga is Rajashekhara in Vidhdhasaala Bhanjika. He is the first person to use trilinga with a ra vattu . Markandeya and Vayu Puranas mention only tilinga. One of the oldest works in Tamil called Agattiyam says Konganam Kannadam Kollam telungam . On the whole, it is more probable that the word telugu is older than the word tenugu.

Telugu - A Cosmopolitan Culture (Posted in soc.culture.indian.telugu by Tadepalli Hari Krishna). My brother and I were often interested in tracing the origins of Telugu culture - not to prove its supremacy over other cultures, but simply to understand what made the Andhras a large cultural group different from the other major Indian cultures. So the first question is: When did the Telugu people become a separate linguistic cultural group & when could they be seen distinct from the other cultural groups?. It must be the case that Telugu usage without being grossly incomprehensible to a Telugu speaking person of today must have existed at least by 1000 BC. Who were all the people speaking Telugu around 1000 BC?. Can we say that all the region marked as ‘Andhra Pradesh’ today was speaking Telugu?.


The answer is not so easy to be stated. We were more than fascinated when we set out to understand the origins of the Telugu culture. An eminent 20th century linguist called Ganti Somayaji Jogi had written a voluminous treatise tracing the origins of several telugu words in Tamil. My brother, however, notes that there is a larger body of Telugu usage that does not intersect with any of the other major languages of India. The infusion of large volume of Sanskrit into Telugu is relatively a more modern event in the history of the Telugu language.

Also, Telugu has distinct linguistic patterns that definitely do not belong to Tamil, in addition to a large body of diction, which is specific to Telugu. He observed that somewhat more primary ‘document’ of the usage of ancient Telugu are in the family names of Telugu people and in the names of the villages and towns of Andhra. These are mostly specific to Telugu people and also a large source for making convincing etymological constructions for Telugu diction.

More reflection on the origins of Telugu led us to believe that Telugu is not the language of any one specific dominant people of the Eastern India, but the confluence of the individual languages of a dozen-to-twenty big tribal groups living in Eastern India. It is difficult of date this process (which must have continued for a period of 1-2 millennia) - safe it put it somewhere before 3000BC. Thus a major language group such as the Telugu could not begun from a single monolithic group. I can compare it only with the formation of a river. A large river as we see it in the plains has a very cognizable course, identity and shape. But its origin is too complex to be traced. Drops of rain water that precipitate in higher up rocks and mountains flow through the crevices of rocks and mountains and join together to form minor streams. These streams slowly merge at the foothills to form smaller rivers, which merge into the larger river in the plateaus and finally become the immense river in the plains. The river has no simple

identity or nomenclature at the point of its formation. So can not one localize in time and space the development of a major culture such as of the Telugu people.

Telugu Script (Onamalu)

(Source: Mana lipi puttupoorvotharaalu by Thirumala Raamachandr). The Telugu alphabet is called Onamaalu. There is a good reason and a little bit of history for this. Just as Buddhism was widely practised in the ancient Telugu country, Jainism flourished in the Kannade country. The writers of the earliest Kannada literature were Jains. They were the religious leaders and educators of that day. Common folks sent their children to Jain gurus for education. The gurus initiated the Aksharabhyasam of the children with a prayer to the Thirthankaras and Siddhas. That prayer started with “Siddham Namaha.”

The close ties with the Kannada country helped spread the Jain traditions in the Telugu country. There is even a school of thought that the Jain and Buddhist literature that existed before Nannaya was destroyed by scholars and kings who embraced Hinduism. Even if the literature was destroyed, the traditions survived and Aksharabhyasam continued to be initiated with the prayer - Siddham Namaha.

In later years, between 10th and 14th centuries, Saivism became wide spread in the Telugu country (Paa So wrote Basava Puranam during this time). Now the religious leaders and teachers were the Saivites and they initiated Aksharabhyasam with a prayer that started with “Onnamassivaaya.” But the Jain tradition did not die away. The initiation prayer generally took the form of “Onnamassivaya Siddham Namaha.” Over the years it became O-Na-Ma-See-Vaa-Yaa-See-Dham-Namaha and the alphabet that was learnt with this prayer came to be called "O-na-ma-lu.”
