In the West-F lemish c i ty Izegem,

industry has a lways been c lose ly

in terwoven wi th da i ly l i fe and the

image of the c i ty . However , the sca le of

the industry changed and so changed

the c i ty . There has been a change

concern ing traff ic , the l ive l iness of

the center and people 's idea ls about

res idence changed.

In our v is ion for the new masterp lan ,

we in tegrate industr ia l her i tage wi th in

in tervent ions for publ ic space and

redevelopment of key locat ions . The

p lan presents a v is ion on a b ig sca le in

wh ich a s low traff ic network connects

the c i ty through log ica l routes wi th

i ts surround ings ( lef t map) . On loca l

sca le , key locat ions are des igned such

as the ra i lway s tat ion area ( top image)

and s treets are recategor ized .

from star t to the f ina l presentat ion

of a report wi th the v is ion for a new

The Pr ix de Rome compet i t ion

cha l lenges nominated young arch i tects

to show the ir ar ts in an imaginary

ass ignment . The Pr ix de Rome ' 14

was launched for the area around the

former dam in the r iver Rot te , the or ig in

of the c i ty of Rot terdam. Th is area

is des ign monotonous ly and misses

l ive l iness on the s treet . The entry we

presented wi th the team of DELVA can

be seen as an innovat ive proposal for

the development of Rot terdam as wel l

as the v is ion of a new generat ion on

the f ie ld of landscape arch i tecture .

Our entry shows that landscape

arch i tectura l des ign can resu l t i s

urban space that is not s tat ic but f lows .

The organ izat ion of space in the c i ty is

no longer a compos i t ion but a habi ta t

where water f lows , energy cascades

and food and goods are exchanged.

Wi th in the des ign , the dam funct ions

as boundary where the Rot te and

the R iver Maas meet . The d i f ference

in funct ion ing of the to r ivers and

catchment areas resu l ts in two wor lds

wi th d i f ferent use and meaning of the

c i ty as l iv ing env ironment .

I v isua l ized the spat ia l i ssues and

character of the p lace . I part ic ipated

act ive ly in d iscuss ion , sketch ing ,

des ign ing and the mak ing of

Approach

The des ign process is insp ired by

landscape narrat ives to ld by inhabi tants

and by in teract ive technology that

creates new sensual exper iences

on the generat ion of e lectr ic i ty and

heat . I des igned s trateg ies for the

development of a renewable energy

landscape in Zwi jndrecht . These

s trateg ies supported the d iscuss ion

about the energy trans i t ion in wh ich

the Mun ic ipa l i ty , Greenserv ice Zu id-

Hol land and severa l companies

part ic ipated .

Des ign proposal

The des ign f inds a synergy between

in tervent ions that innovate the

energy system and in tervent ions that

improve landscape va lue in terms

of b iod ivers i ty and recreat ion . The

des igned developments wi l l lead to

100% se l f -suff ic iency of the dwel l ings

in Zwi jndrecht and 50% se l f -suff ic iency

of the industry in 2030 . In tervent ions

are technolog ica l ly ef f ic ient and add

a new layer of exper iences to the

landscape.

This research pro ject had a pract ice-

or iented approach . I had contact wi th

s takeholders and the a lderman of the

Zwi jndrecht mun ic ipa l i ty to exchange

words about des ign a l ternat ives . A l l

invo lved part ies had the ir own ideas

on the approach of the mun ic ipa l

energy trans i t ion . In my v iew, the ro le

of the landscape arch i tect in such a

process is to br ing ideas to a next

leve l through des ign by i l lus trat ing

how the landscape can be enr iched in

i ts va lue for user and exper ience .

I i l l us trated how a renewable energy

landscape can be exper ienced as

access ib le , surpr is ing and in teract ive

landscape. I l i ke to use a techn ique

of hand drawings which are ed i ted

in Adobe Photoshop. You see the

entrance of an a lgae c luster that

is access ib le for the publ ic . In th is

c lus ter of greenhouses , people wi l l

fee l the micro-c l imate that is needed

for the a lgae product ion and people

can consume by-products of the a lgae

farming . .

the ind iv idua l phase of the pro ject ,

I presented a des ign that addressed

the ir ambi t ion : to develop an at tract ive

investment c l imate for naut ic industry

on the is land Stormpolder .

bot t lenecks : l im i ted access ib i l i ty , a

faded naut ic character and a heav i ly

po l lu ted so i l . The des ign in tegrates

so lu t ions to develop the is land in

phases as at tract ive , access ib le and

heal thy work env ironment .

Des ign

Publ ic t ransport v ia water is

fac i l i ta ted and s t imulated to increase

access ib i l i ty . The so i l i s pur i f ied is

phases wi th phytoremediat ing p lants .

to the sca le of the c i ty and from urban

fu ture v is ions to f ina l des ign drawings .

I contr ibuted to the ambi t ion of the

off ice : rea l iz ing a susta inable and

at tract ive c i ty . I of ten worked in

pro jects team wi th experts from the

f ie lds of t raff ic , in frastructure , water ,

env ironment and spat ia l p lann ing .

Some projects were in the phase of

f i rs t sketches . Other pro jects were

in the phase of execut ion . We took

The outer d ike area of Rot terdam was

object of s tudy for th is research and

des ign pro ject . Wi th in th is pro jects ,

s trateg ies for c l imate proof des ign for

publ ic space are explored .

Approach

Bui ld ing typology and the des ign of

s treets , quays and p laygrounds are

seen as in terre lated . I worked on

severa l scenar io 's to i l lus trate how

bu i ld ing typolog ies can change the

image of the c i ty in the Fe i jenoord

Ne ighbourhood. The f ina l des ign

proposes a short term so lu t ion in

wh ich the presence of the r iver Maas

is used to make publ ic space more

in terest ing and ex i t ing .

Des ign

Th is des ign shortens the d is tance to the

water and enhances the exper ience

of r iver dynamics . In the Fe i jenoord

ne ighbourhood , the Dutch po l icy

' l iv ing wi th water ' shou ld be seen in a

mul t icu l tura l context . The meaning of

water and the understand ing of l iv ing

in a de l ta wi th a need for precaut ions

is d i f ferent wi th in th is soc iety .

Therefore , the des igned quays , r iver

s ides , paths and boardwalks s t imulate

consc iousness about the effects of

c l imate change. P lanned in tervent ions

for the long term l ike the creat ion

of an urban fabr ic wi th adapt ive

bu i ld ings and much surface water w i l l

be accepted more eas i ly as effect of

the short term in tervent ions that make

the r iver dynamics v is ib le .

' 13 and March ' 14 , I worked vo luntar i ly

as pro ject coord inator wi th overa l l

respons ib i l i ty for a permacul ture

pro ject in Malawi .

Malawi shares borders wi th Tanzan ia ,

Mozambique and Zambia . The

country has a long dry season . Th is

fact , in combinat ion wi th a pract ice

of agr icu l ture that main ly focuses

on corn , resu l ts in large sca le so i l

degradat ion .

In L i longwe, the capi ta l c i ty , I

superv ised the development of a

demonstrat ion p lat . We showed how

you can create an eco log ica l system

wi th h igh d ivers i ty of perenn ia l p lants

that needs on ly l i t t le maintenance to

grow. Wi th in such a system, the so i l

i s natura l ly fer t i l ized and protected

aga inst eros ion . The permacul ture

garden can prov ide vegetables , fru i t ,

meat , wood and other products . I t

focuses rather on d ivers i ty than

quant i ty . In a v i l lage out of the c i ty ,

I gave tra in ings , workshops and

supported people in the des ign of

a garden around the ir houses . The

pro ject can be character ized by a

ho l is t ic approach in wh ich care for

landscape , care for people and shar ing

knowledge were centra l object ives .

I my des ign work , I use such a ho l is t ic

approach . I be l ieve that the way we

deal w i th our landscape ref lects how

we see our p lace on earth . Therefore ,

h igh b iod ivers i ty and good l iv ing

cond i t ions are log ica l a ims for des ign

to me.
