Master dissertation - BolzanoFeb’ 2015 - Jun ‘2015
Parasitical infrastucture was implemented in the existing fabric focusing on a couple of marginal aspects of the city. Mental healthcare implemented on a lineair agropark charged with the economic aspect of a winery. Focussing on materials, fysical and mental boundaries, exposure to stimuli, exposure to an existing urban fabric and the mental boost from economic value.

Reconversion old barracks - GhentOct‘ 2014 - Jan’ 2015
A new sunken square got implemented in the old barracks, interweaving various factors and actors in the area. By sinking the square the natural symmetry is preserved. A natural waterflow collects water in a big bassin in the center of the square. The old buildings get a new layout to accommodate the new offices.

Reconversion warehouse of building materials - Mechelenfeb’ 2014 - jun’ 2014
An old warehouse makes place for a new development. As a key ellement in a great ecological infrastructure we opted to touch as less as posible. A natural environment was secured and completed the existing ecological structures. Water meets Forrest meest Urban fabric.

Strategy to revitalise the degenerated urban fabric - Antwerpoct’ 2013 - jan’ 2014
Instead of focussing on the vacant waterfront and making a clash between old fabric and a new waterfront, a strategy to revive the existing fabric in order to activate the waterfront is handled. The idea of apps that complements the needs of that moment. Containers get supplied by the waterfront and provide that what the community is in need of, at that moment.

Rethinking Architectural schoolsOct’ 2012 - Jan’ 2013
One of my bachelor projects in which she had to design a school on a triangular sloped open space in the city of Brussels. The surplus of the project is in the preservation of an open feeling around the building. Another added value is the flexible approach of the façade material which creates a play of light, both inside and outside.
Jan Maenhout
Research she did on the relationship of the information that is printed and the part that’s kept back. A serie of the same drawing are made with a different amount of hatches. Engraved on a black-painted tile with a laser cutter.
Corneel Cannaerts | Tiemen Schotsaert
Research on a bridge in Ghent. Outed in a exaggeration of symmetrical images and a large drawing of our search for symmatrical axes.
Bert Joostens
Grafic layout she made for ‘Eline De Jonge - Dietitian’. A lifted heart in bright colours gives away a hint of healty eating and a better lifestyle.
Layout for the Phd of Cindy De Jonge. A clean and organized layout makes it easy for readers to make their way through the many studies.
MasterDissertation_Bolzano
No program was given, just an imput lecture about ‘the next economy’ was to be taken in acount. By mapping the area and analysing the environment she had to formulate a program and masterplan for the city of Bolzano. It became a search to implent two marginal aspects of the city, the landscape and mental health facilities, and give it a ... in the excisiting urban fabric.
Concept_MasterDissertation_Bolzano_StevenGeeraert_BartVanGassen
In her Master dissertation she started mapping the idea’s that the city had noted down. New centralities and reconversion areas were a perfect starting point to plea for a new strategy where the city no longer pushed the landscape and vineyards away. By elongating the existing centralities into the vineyards, new connections appeared between the city and the surrounding landscape. Along the new centralities she implemented agroparks that connect the vineyards with the river and in the meantime it creates a new relationship between the landscape and the city.

One of these agroparks it’s theme was wine. The Italians are so proud of this heritage, but nowadays all the wine is locked far away in the mountains or is protected by razorwire. Along the wine agropark, she implemented three zones of wine porcessing. A zone of producting at the bottom, a zone of concumption in the center and a zone of reccling at the top. At the center, alongside the consumtion area, that functions as a daycenter for all of the neigborhood, a caring farm is installed that keeps the wine bussiness spinning. It’s inhabitants are people who had a mentally instable period in their lives but are now ready to be reintegrated in the community. No better please to do so than in the very hart of the city. This is opposition of earlier periods where they put the mental healtcare as far as possible.

Interaction between patients
Interaction patients - neighbours
Interaction Patients - common people
The new buildings behaved like parasites on the existing urban tissue. Just like weeds through the cracks, the buildings appear on places that are empty and in underuse. Most of the ground levels in the existing buildings are used for circulation purpose only. By implementing a series of parasiting building on this level the ground level gets activated and becomes a new place for interaction. Interaction in between mental health patients and the commons.
Materials_MasterDissertation_Bolzano_StevenGeeraert_BartVanGassen
Last but not least she spend a lot of attention at the materials of the building. The inhabitants of the building are mentally ill people, who are ready to be integrated in the society. This is a proces that takes time, and is different for each person.
The use of the different materials in the building creates different boundaries for the inhabitants, which allows them to explore for themselves, ....
The exterior is made out of corrugated steel, with different oppacity. The perforated steel functions as a sort of shield, inbetween the residents of the mental rehabilitation institute and the environment. In this case there is a different input of incentives from the outside world. This is also very important that the resident itself can choose how many incentives he can handle.
The materials are all carefully chosen in order to support the integration process.
ReconversionBarracks_Ghent
Old military barracks are bought by the city and will accomadate the new county hall. A program with certain m² per office is given and must be implemented on the site. Extra program can be added to embed the county hall in the excisting urban fabric.
It’s been a good exercise to find a way to demilitarize the old barracks and make the area attractive to the working people, the vistors, the students and the local residents.
A central lane accentuates the symmetry of the building. From this lane you can enter the different buidlings. It becomes more than just a functional lane, it is also a place of meeting and staying.
The surrounding walls all get a dirrent approach, adapted to the prevailing atmosphere.

CoeurCorridor_Mechelen
Coeur corridor is a project that combines a ecological approach with an architectural one. On an old industrial site, the assignment was to build an amount of buildings. Buildings that were flexible in use during a long time.
Context_CoeurCorridor_Mechelen_ErikVanDaele_BartVanGassen
First the team of Lieselotte and Louise did some reseach of the context. Quickly they saw that their site was a blind spot in several ecological structures. This became their starting point. It had to become a collaboration in between the ecological structures and the new buildings that were requested. Coeur corridor was first of all a completion of the green and blue network. Secondary it was the corridor whoom embodied the shift in between landscape and urban tissue.
Superposition_masterdissertation_Bolzano_StevenGeeraert_BartVanGassen
On the foundations of the old industrial building they kept a part of the roof structure, to create an covered venue. in the other parts of the concrete foundations we made cuts to guide the rainwater and keep it as long as possible on the site. The corridor was grafted on the existing streets and symbolised the shift in between park and housing.
The layout of the building were flexible in time, it could be used as a studio for an elderly or a young couple and apartment or as one bigger apartment.
This project arose from a team work with Fien De Decker and Eline De Maertelaere. In the elaboration of the final design Lieselotte went in a complete different direction as her teammates. Instead of focussing on the riverbanks she chose to work in the existing urban tissue. Working from the existing neighborhood to revitalise the place would automatically lead to the development of the riverbanks.

As a designer she has an interest for large scale project ideas with small punctual interventions, that have the intent to make a positive influence on the urban invironment. As a kind of accucupture treathment on the urban fabric she tries to read the city and tackle problem areas. An example of this stragy is a project she worked on situated in Antwerp, Deurne North. Right next to the Sportpaleis. This neigborhood was isolated from the rest of the city, by a canal, highly in underuse, a big street with much traffic, the sportpaleis with the ring above it and an industrial zone. For this project she decided not to work on the canalside, that has great potential for reconversion. She made a new city center, with a new community center, by making one street only accessible for slow traffic, adding new pavement from facade to facade. In this new pavement there are sockets implemented where the containers can plug-in and have access to electricity and water. The whole neighborhood can suggest which functions must be implemented in their new city center.

This flexible strategy makes sure that the now downgraded neighborhood gets a kickstart and starts developing in a positive way. New functions can be added, or can replace functions that are no longer necessary. The city can grow at its own pace relying on the initiatives of the residents.

Rebranding architectural schools made me question the fact of classrooms. In this building, the floors continue in stairs and so one, it’s one big classroom in which the students can find their own space where they can develop their creative minds to the maximum. The facade is build up in different diffuse materials in with the incoming light is different throughout the building.
The building itselfs is sited on a triangular square. It divides the square in two smaller areas, each with it’s own urban atmosphere.
RethinkingArchitectureSchools_Brussels_JanMaenhout
In this project she experimented with the technique of laser cutter. She painted white tiles black and used the laser cutter to engrave drawings on it. She made a series of the same drawing, each with it’ own amount of information giving by the use of hatches.

MixedMedia_Symmetricals_BertJoostens
This drawing is one of the outputs of the mixed media class ‘expression’ where Lieselotte worked with Irina Deschoemaeker on the subtject of a symmetrical bridge. They mapped al of the symmetrical lines on site and then went experimenting with symetricals of the symetrical, and so further on.
ExtracurricularWork_Dietitian Eline De Jonge_
Outside of school, Lieselotte has a passion for grafic design. For her soccer team she designed some posters, invitations and a temporary logo. For her sisters she fitted a layout onto their projects. She learned some Illustrator and she can write some html code.
Grafic design for a dietitian in Dutch, design of a logo for the business, businesscard and appointment cards. A windowsticker at the front of the office is also designed by Lieselotte.
