Voorwoord...

HCommunicatie en Multimedia Design in Arnhem. Ik zit nu in het eerste jaar van deze opleiding en moet nu voor de course Brand Design een magazine maken en ontwerpen. Zoals je ziet is deze opdracht goed gelukt! Maar nu even iets meer over mezelf!

Zoals je ziet gaat dit magazine over verschillende bekende bands die op dit moment erg populair zijn bij het grote publiek. Muziek betekend heel veel in mijn leven, ik speel bas en elektrische gitaar in mijn band ‘The Basement Monkeys’. Omdat ik zo veel met muziek bezig ben be-sloot ik mijn magazine daarom ook over muziek te doen. Met name de categorie rock en de mainstream metal/hardcore sprak me erg aan. Naast dat ik deze categorie heel erg vet vind om naar te luisteren zijn er niet echt veel magazines die over dit onderwerp wat schrijven. Dit maakte het voor mij erg interessant om zoiets gelijks te gaan maken. De grootste inspiratiebronnen die ik heb gebruikt zijn de ‘Alternative Press’, ‘Kerrang!’ en de ‘Power Unlimited’. Die bladen spreken me erg aan, omdat ze er om bekent staan veel kleuren en foto’s te gebruiken. Hierdoor wordt het hele blad een druk maar opvallend geheel.

Naast muziek ben ik ook veel bezig met veel vormen van kunst. Vooral het tekenen van anime vind ik erg leuk om te doen. Hieronder staan wat tekeningen van mij die ik onlangs heb gemaakt!

In anime en manga series spelen felle kleuren een belangrijke rol, en dat is ook de reden waarom ik dat graag terug wilde laten komen in mijn magazine. Ieder kopje heeft z’n eigen kleur die weer corres-

pondeert met de band waar de pagina’s over gaan. Zo heb ik voor de pagina van The Arctic Monkeys de kleur groen laten terugkomen. Deze kleur is in veel logo’s van hun terug te vinden. Toch wilde ik toch één kleur als basis elke keer laten terugkomen op de achtergrond, en dat was de kleur wit. Wit combineert goed met alle kleuren die ik gebruikt heb in het magazine

Wat opvalt in mijn magazine is dat de headliners een opvallendere opmaak hebben dan de rest van de artikelen. Dit heb ik gedaan zodat juist die artikelen er het meeste uitspringen!

De Artikelen die in dit magazine staan heb ik uit digitale kranten of magazines gehaald, want het is onbegonnen werk om alles zelf te schrijven. Ik heb daarentegen wel geprobeerd om zo veel mogelijk content zelf te schrijven! Ik wens je veel leesplezier!

30 Seconds To Mars

Seconds To Mars lanceerde vrijdag 1 maart zijn nieuwe single ‘Up In The Air’ met een spaceshuttle. Jared Leto, Tomo Milicevic en Shannon Leto waren aanwezig op het Cape Canaveral Air Force

“We wilden de nieuwe single van ons nieuwe album ‘Love Lust Faith + Dreams’ zo spectaculair mogelijk aankondigen! Daarbij heet het nummer Up In The Air... Dus wat is er nou vetter om de single letterlijk met een raket de lucht in te schieten!”

Inmiddels is de raket geland op internationaal ruimtestation ISS, zo laat de band weten via Twitter.

Naast de nieuwe single van 30 Seconds To Mars, zat er ook materiaal voor wetenschappelijke experimenten in de capsule.

‘Up In The Air’ is de eerste single van het nieuwe nog te verschijnen studio-album van 30 Seconds To Mars. De opvolger van This Is War wordt het vierde studioalbum van de Amerikaanse rockband en verschijnt in juni.

Na de release van This Is War in 2010 gaf 30 Seconds To Mars maar liefst 300 optredens in 60 verschillende landen, waarmee de band in het Guiness Book of Records terechtkwam.

De band van Jared Leto komt deze zomer weer naar Nederland en staat op 15 juni op Pinkpop, waar ze in 2011 ook al optraden.

A DAY TO REMEMBER

WThe blistering cut finds frontman Jeremy McKinnon returning to full scream while the rest of the band provide a furious backing to the song.

McKinnon spoke with Revolver about ‘Violence’ and he says that the track was inspired by some of the horrible acts that people commit against each other. The vocalist explains, “I was just trying to talk about different perspectives from the world and why people do terrible things to each other. It started out, to me, feeling like you’re helpless. It felt like everything is so much bigger than you — there are people above you no matter where you go. That kind of control of what you can and can’t do. It’s really not meant to be political as it might sound — that’s just never been our band. But it’s that feeling that things are out of your hands. I wanted it to have this dark, ominous feeling.”

At present, A Day to Remember are doing their best to finish up their next album, tentatively titled ‘Common Courtesy.’ For those who worry about the band going mainstream after the success of ‘All I Want,’ the singer adds, “A lot of bands, when they get popular, they tend to drop the whole heavier portion of their music. It’s almost like the people who like that music are just waiting to pounce on you the second you do it. We’re gonna have more heavier songs than on the past two records together.” However, that being said, McKinnon says that A Day to Remember is a band who enjoys varying their styles and there will be a little bit of everything on top of the harder material for their next set.

Wgirl who looks “good on the dance floor,” which rhymes a reference to the Montagues and Capulets with “banging tunes and D.J. sets,” leads to Internet fame, the fastest-selling debut in British history and, in 2006, instant, MySpace-amplified international stardom.

But then years and albums go by.

Alex Turner, the Arctic Monkeys frontman, now 25, sits backstage at the Electric Factory in Philadelphia, an early stop on this year’s tour for their fourth album, ‘‘Suck It and See.’’ The room is not luxurious. And no matter how big the band gets, its members sleep on two cramped buses and shower in grimy backstage stalls. Yet with all of these places, Turner explains, ‘‘it feels a bit like coming home.’’ As an adult, that’s a depressing idea.

On the band’s previous tour, one strategy for keeping sane was inten-sely competitive Ping-Pong. Today the table is set up, but no one seems interested. Instead the Monkeys venture out in search of a bar they remember from a previous trip. It turns out, though, that the Silk City Diner doesn’t open for another 30 minutes. Like a scene out of “This Is Spinal Tap,” everyone stands by the chained door making awkward small

talk on a deserted street corner.The next day Turner sits in the back of an SUV on the way to a Boston radio station. He’s in good spirits. The previous night was a success. A lot of young, new fans came to the show, and there’s a deserved sense that this album may be the band’s best. Turner thinks back to those early days of youthful myopia, when teenage life was what he knew and he wrote what he knew. “We thought everyone was just like us,” he says. “And they were, I guess.”

On the second album he tried to hold on to that youthful exuberance, to varying success. On the third he amped up the production to a heavily instrumented complexity. This time around, a worldlier Turner opted to simplify. He wrote melodies whole, on a guitar, instead of creating pastiche in a studio. He streamlined his famously verbose lyrics while keeping them cryptically humorous. ‘‘It’s like that George Jones song ‘Relief Is Just a Swallow Away,’” he explains. It’s a silly idea for a song, but the humor comes from the dark truth of it. An inside joke can be understood as profundity if the song is well crafted. “It’s always nice to leave that door open, isn’t it?” he says. “Or at least the light on.”

At the House of Blues, Turner ducks out of the SUV and into the club through two crowds, one lined up to see his band, the other at Fenway Park, across the street. Inside sits the Ping-Pong table. After sound check, the band decides to play a quick game.

orig jaar kondigden de Foo Fighters nog aan een pauze in te lassen, maar daar komt de band nu al op terug. Op de rode loper van de Brit Awards liet Foo Fighters-frontman weten volgende week naar Los Angeles te vliegen om te beginnen aan een nieuw album.

De nieuwe plaat is de opvolger van het in 2011 uitgekomen Wasting Light. Grohl vertelt aan muziekmagazine NME dat hij grootse plannen heeft voor het nieuwe album. ‘Ik heb een te gek idee voor wat ik met het nieuwe album wil doen en hoe ik het wil opnemen. Het wordt in elk geval geen traditioneel album.’ Een exacte release-datum gaf de zanger nog niet prijs. Grohl zei alleen dat de plaat er ‘uiteindelijk wel zal komen’.

Wasting Light is het zevende studioalbum van de Foo Fighters. Het album werd geproducet door Butch Vig die ook bij het nummer ‘Back & Forth’ meespeelt als gastartiest. Bij dit album werd vooral de nadruk gelegd op het zijn van een echte rockband. Onder andere Bob Mould en Krist Novoselic waren gastartiesten bij de opnames.Dave Grohl beschrijft het album als hun zwaarste album tot nu toe. Niet alleen de frontman van de band, maar ook officiële muziekinstanties geven positieve feedback omtrent het album. Tijdens de eerste week werden er 235.000 exemplaren van verkocht.

Op het moment reist Grohl de wereld rond om de door hem gefilmde documentaire Sound City te promoten. Die gaat over de legendarische Sound City Studios in Los Angeles, waar onder andere Nirvana en Fleetwood Mac albums opnamen. Ter gelegenheid van de documentaire stelde Grohl de superband Sound City Players met onder andere Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), Corey Tailor (Slipknot en Stone Sour) en Paul McCartney samen.
