7:30 am–8:15 am Spotted Lanternfly, the Next Landscape Invader Michael J. Raupp, Ph.D.—University of Maryland

A discussion on what we know about the spotted lanternfly, including where it came from, current status, biology, and control.

Michael Raupp, Ph.D., is a professor of entomology and an extension specialist. He has earned the nickname “The Bug Guy” from students and fans of his blog, BugoftheWeek.com, where he reports on all things bug and insect related. He frequently appears as an expert on Good Morning America, NPR, and other news outlets.

8:15 am–9:00 am You Can’t Judge a Bush by Its Color—Look Beyond What You See, Using Advanced IPM Strategies Heather Zindash—The Soulful Gardener

A discussion of real-life Integrated Pest Management (IPM) situations that illustrate how important it is not to jump to hasty conclusions based on what you initially see or what you think you know about the situation. This will include several examples where using advanced IPM strategies and digging deeper into the plant and/or site history reveals vital clues that turn assumption into fact and ultimately results in an accurate management strategy for clients.

Heather Zindash is an experienced IPM consultant working with local nursery, commercial, and residential customers. She is a Certified Professional Horticulturalist, Maryland Master Gardener, Maryland Master Naturalist, and former graphic designer. Heather is known as “The Soulful Gardener,” whose mission is “to bring people, plants, and nature together for health and well-being.”

9:00 am–9:45 am Leaf Spot Diseases in Turfgrass: The Case for Improved Varieties Rich Buckley, Ph.D.—Rutgers University

Leaf spot diseases in turfgrass have historically been devastating in the landscape. Fortunately for turf managers, turf breeders have come to the rescue. This talk covers the most common leaf spot problems in landscape turf, with an emphasis on proper identification and an integrated approach to fungicide-free management centering on improved turf varieties.

Rich Buckley, Ph.D., is the director of Rutgers’ Plant Diagnostic Laboratory. He is an instructor in the Rutgers Professional Golf Turf Management School and the Rutgers Department of Pathology and Plant Science, and he teaches courses in diseases and insect pests of turfgrass and ornamental plants. He is also a frequent lecturer and invited speaker on disease and insect pest problems in turf and ornamentals, as well as on plant problem-solving and pest management techniques.

9:45 am–10:00 am Break

10:00 am–11:00 am Beating the Beast—How to Push Back on Diseases and Insects in the Landscape Stanton Gill—University of Maryland Extension David Clement, Ph.D.—University of Maryland Extension

Stanton Gill and David Clement, Ph.D., are teaming up to educate you on major disease and insect problems that occurred on landscape trees in 2018 and will share the results of their field trials in evaluating the best control measures.

Stanton Gill is an extension specialist in IPM and entomology with the University of Maryland Extension and is also a professor in landscape technology at Montgomery College. He is the author of four books and more than 800 refereed and professional magazine articles on pests and using IPM to deal with them.

Dr. David Clement has served for the past 28 years as a statewide field-based extension specialist in plant pathology. He focuses on teaching how to diagnose and manage plant diseases through IPM strategies.

11:00 am–11:45 am Right of Way Applications Chuck Schuster—University of Maryland Extension

Pesticide application in rights of way requires care with regard to products selected and methods used. This seminar will discuss the latest information on application methods and chemicals. Discussion will include preventing overapplication of chemicals that will cause large areas of no soil cover, leading to potential erosion. A review of the region’s approved chemicals will also be included.

Chuck Schuster is the commercial horticulture educator for the Central Maryland Cluster with the University of Maryland Extension. He has been part of the horticulture team providing programs across the region and has taught internationally. He has worked to provide new approaches to turf management to keep pace with the current regional nutrient management regulations. He also volunteers with LCA’s Landscape Industry Certified Technician program.

11:45 am–12:30 pm Lunch

12:30 pm–1:15 pm Plants I Love to Hate Rich Buckley, Ph.D.—Rutgers University

This discussion focuses on trees and shrubs that everybody has. Common disease problems in shrubs and small trees will be covered, with an emphasis on proper identification and integrated management and chemical-free control.

See bio above.

1:15 pm–2:00 pm Understanding Soil Needs and Staying Within the Regulations When Raising Turf Chuck Schuster—University of Maryland Extension

This discussion will review the nutrient needs of turf and how to meet them. Recent regulatory updates have provided new opportunities for using organic products on turf, both at establishment and for maintenance. Learn how to make the most of available products to keep the turf strong and looking good.

See bio above.
