CD reviews !Review 1: flipsideflipsidereviews.blogspot.co.uk !!PERVERTED BY LANGUAGE - BOXERS, 18 SEP !Score: ★★★★★★★★☆☆ !(Bron: http://flipsideflipsidereviews.blogspot.co.uk/2014/09/perverted-by-language-boxers.html) !

Formed in Brussels, perhaps inspired by the album of the same name by The Fall and with no Belgians employed, energetic dark-wavers Perverted By Language recall the likes of The Chameleons, Music For Pleasure, Editors, Bauhaus, The Sound, Nyam Nyam, Into Paradise, The Names and just about any British (and Belgian) rock band from the '80s worth its weight in blood, sweat and tears. !Boxers is the band's debut-album and follows on from their live shows with many of the same ingredients - brutal guitar-riffs,

insistent drums, low-end basslines and Jez Thomas's expressive hollering that holds a tune and tells a tale - think Peter Murphy and Tom Smith in full throttle. !The first two songs certainly show some intent - The Box is an obvious single, an explosive introduction with masked socio-proclamations such as "These are dangerous times" and "I'll think about your hands ... when the money blackens them...", while Lost For Words bullies its way past "..all the rules I had to follow...", "...destitute and tired..." and "...desolation..." as though the band's lives depended on it. !Amandine has an element of the epic about it - guitars soar like Explosions In The Sky, tempered by bassist Elise's sweet croon, making the whole thing much more palatable than certain peers I could mention - it's the band's '4AD' song (every new-wave act should have one). Perhaps PBL have invented their own genre - 'Dreamo', anyone? !Other highlights include The Beach, The Idealist (which, musically at least, recalls Suede for some reason) and the pretty All Of My Mother's Favourite Nightmares, a song that sounds like a curtain-call to these ears, rather than a mid-album change of pace. The rest of Boxers is serviceable angst-rock admirably self-penned and produced, an album the band are rightly proud of. Only Elephantine falls short for me personally and Pewter Eyes doesn't quite get going but these are minor grumbles - Boxers punches above its weight, for the most part. !Regardless of the current crop of chart-bothering, bed-wetting, synth-wielding, white-soul perpetrators of drivel around Europe, Perverted By Language bravely wield an auricular roar loud enough to disrupt traffic and voluminous enough to get some shows booked. Good debut. !Posted by pkrpmusic !

In 1983 a Mancunian schizophrenic released an album named Perverted By Language. Three decades later the name comes back, but in the form of Belgian band with some international roots. Never give up on a dream as after years this international combo (singer Jeremy Thomas is a Brit) comes up with a first full album. Ten tracks of post-punkpleasure that sounds as tribute to forgotten heroes, but also as a middle finger to today’s music scene that only seems to embrace polished pop songs (all wrapped up, of course, as alternative). !The production is neat, but raw too. From the very first

minute that opener The Box is coming out of your speakers, it feels like Gang Of Four are back (not that they were ever away, but you know what I’m trying to say…) !In Lost For Words the bass from Elise Boënnec has a Hookey-feel and Jez’s voice is similar to Ian Curtis. Well, you can blame Jeremy for the fact that his voice is similar to Ian’s one. But so what? Coldplay are already ripping off Echo & The Bunnymen for 10 years and everybody thinks they’re genius! !Elephantine is a break, a sort of Crépuscule-interlude in where the guitars Guy Wilssens and Ronan Collot do a sort of Vini Reilly-twist. Elise even proves that she can sing on Amandine: quite Anna Domino-like. But after this, apart from closing track Pewter Eyes, the band continues to smash your face. !Boxers is a debut that matters. I really hate to review music that is created by friends, but to quote the almighty Moz: I certainly wouln’t hate if they become successful! !Harsh, raw, in a way poppy and melodic. The sole thing you can blame them for is the fact that they come up with an album that sounds like it’s been made in 1983. But then again, who wants to sound like Snow Patrol? !!!!!!!

Post-punk made a welcome comeback some 14 years ago in the shape of Interpol’s majestic debut. Dark basslines, stabbing guitars and sonorous vocals, God how I’d missed that. They sparked a revival of sorts with Editors and others following suit. The thing is, having moved to Belgium a decade ago I now realise that post punk, as well as Goth rock, never really went away in mainland Europe. Germany, Benelux and the Nordics have all hosted doom-laden indie artists and have done for some while. Bands like Cut City, Principe Valiente and Silence Is Sexy have more than kept the pilot light flickering. Perverted By Language ignite it.

Perverted By Language is the title of an album by The Fall. Perversely The Fall are about the only Manchester band PBL don’t really sound like. The name has more to do with the differing mother languages of each bandmember. Based in Brussels I think none (maybe one?) of the line up are actually Belgian. It’s that type of city folks. The band have been kicking around for a while themselves. I think the core songs on Boxers have existed for at least five years, regularly played in a live setting, but waiting for the opportunity to be captured in studio format. All us record lovers had to cling onto was the rather rough bootleg, Live At Soirées Cerises. I’m happy that they bided their time though. The songs sound great on Boxers, the mix terrific with no part overpowering the rest. Crucially, they have taste. The bands main influences seem to be those major players from back in the day. As you would expect Joy Division and The Chameleons loom largest. There’s a nod towards the Banshees (and early Cocteau Twins) on the Elise Boennec fronted ‘Amandine’ and ‘The Idealist’ is more Interpol than anything on El Pintor. But PBL mix it up, formulate their own blend and bottle it for our pleasure. Their execution is brilliant. Duelling twin guitars often take the limelight in such dreampop settings but the rhythm section is often what seals the deal. PBL cover all sonic bases allowing the spectral baritone of Jez Thomas to float over the soundscape.

People sometimes say this type of music is dark or depressing. I find it warm and inviting. The bass is sensual, the guitars sparkle and Thomas pitches his performance as wounded rather than agonised. Wise move. Too often bands of this ilk are undone by pretention and fall foul of ridicule. Yes there’s a heavier Goth element to PBL at times, witness epic closer ‘Pewter Eyes’, but they play it deadpan and Boxers works better for it. Enjoy this record then, and visualise the power and potential of these songs in a live setting

Recorded by Renaud Houben -mixed and mastered by Fred Hyatt. La pochette est signée Bibijagua. Dix plages, all words by Jez - all songs performed, arranged and produced by Perverted by Language, c à d, Jeremy Thomas – vocals/Francesco Carlucci – drums /Ronan Collot – guitar/ Guy Wilssens – guitar und Elise Boënnec – bass! !'The Box' The universe is a box within a box and our solar system a box within a box within a box...dit l'extrait tiré de la fiction inspired by The Fall. The Graveyard School of Poetry. !'Lost for Words'. A nouveau le ton est à la désillusion, au désarroi, à l'impression de gâchis ...the writing on the wall is lies and deception the stories you told are desolation and pain... scande Jez, tandis que basse et guitares assaillent inlassablement tes neurones. !!!!!

'Elephantine' A romantic post-punk ballad dans le moule Chameleons whose fans' eyes will get filled with tears of melancholy and joy en pensant au titre 'View from a hill'. Du Perverted by Language harmonies! !' All of my mother's favourite nightmares' Une question Jez, pourquoi sur la pochette du disque tu vires amerloque? !!!

'Pewter eyes' Simon, t'en penses quoi? Read my book, pal, I wrote that the comparisons with the English Romantic poets, such as Shelley or Byron, are obvious. I peel the skin off your body Looking for the truth within I find nothing you're so shallow Nothing left but withered skin... C'est pas ... They're dancing under the moonlight Astaire, Sinatra, Kelly So stylish, good looking and classy... ( 'Cha Cha' - My Little Cheap Dictaphone).

! Perverted By Language Pop/Rock Wonderhorse Vous aimez Interpol ou Editors ?

Le second rappelle immanquablement The Eden House.

9

Page 10: Perverted By Language Press Kit

Après « The Beach », compo très directe qui renoue avec l'énergie pure du punk, on découvre « The Idealist », une chanson qui recèle un haut potentiel. C'est un slow aux accents 'Smithiens' doté d'un refrain immédiatement mémorisable : ‘I once was an Idealist but then I met you...’ et de guitares résolument orientées 'Interpol'. A découvrir !

« All My Mother Favourite Nightmare » débute sur un superbe riff et on est gentiment bercé par le baryton de Jez Thomas. On pense ici au regretté Adrian Borland (The Sound).

PervertedbyLanguage - bio !English singer-songwriter Jez and Breton guitarist Ronan got together some time in 2007 as a duo. It soon transpired that they’d need a drummer to make it work. Italian drummer Francesco came bundled with Greek guitarist Vasilis. Elise, also from Brittany, took over the bass duties to allow Jez to focus on singing. And so, Perverted by Language came to be. In 2010, Vasilis left the band and Flemish guitarist Guy took over.

Perverted by Language never set out to sound like anything or anyone in particular, just to explore the depths of their own psyche. Jez’s distinct bass-baritone voice and emotion laden lyrics often remind people of Editors’ Tom Smith or Joy Division’s Ian Curtis. The guitars somewhere between Sonic Youth and The Chameleons. This is a band built on people, on diversity, on the very essence of what makes us human.

Perverted by Language have appeared live at the Botanique, the VaartKapoen (VK), Soirées Cerise, the B-52 club, Fantastique Nights, lots of ‘musiccafé’s’,…

They have opened for Nebraskan indie legends For Against, post punk legends Chameleons Vox, original Belgian new wavers Red Zebra, Front 242 spin-off Modern Cubism, Evi Vine, Rosa Parks’ Private Bus seat,…

Perverted By Language is: !Jeremy Thomas: vocals Ronan Collot: guitars Francesco Carlucci: drums Elise Boénnec: bass Guy Wilssens: guitars !!! !!
