In the future too, TenneT would like to contribute to the successful implementation of the energy turnaround, which, however, requires a fundamental structural change regarding the connection of offshore wind farms.

The connection of electricity gained by offshore wind farms in the course of the next years can only be successful if the still to be clari ed liability issues are clearly regulated by law, if there is a long-term offshore planning agenda in place, and if the required further investments will rest on multiple shoulders and not be borne by one party only. The Nordergründe offshore

wind farm consists of 18 wind energy plants, which are to generate a total of 111 megawatt of electricity. Thanks to the proximity to the mainland, the wind farm will be connected with three-phase alternating current technology. The cable route will run 28 kilometres from the wind farm to the landing point and from there another four kilometres on land to the Inhausen transformer station, which is being expanded for the feed-in of wind-generated electricity. ABB is the contractor.

TenneT continues its work on successfully implementing the energy turnaround

The transmission system operator TenneT has now awarded the contract for the connection of the Nordergründe offshore wind farm with three-phase alternating current technology. The connection constitutes a part of the projects already planned by TenneT prior to 2011, for which the company has already released a total investment volume of approximately 5.5 billion euros since 2010. Thus TenneT is the largest investor in the energy turnaround and provides a signifi cant contribution to the energy turnaround in Germany by feeding wind energy generated in offshore wind farms into the mainland energy grid and also by expanding the grids on the mainland.

“With these orders Niron makes a ying start in 2012” says Harco Groen, General Manager of Niron Staal. “These orders further reinforce the companies belief that there will be continued demand for its specialty of machining large objects, its high tensile steel (S690) welding competences and its attractive facility.”

VOSTA LMG, Subsea7, Bibby Offshore (through sister company Shipdock), IHC Handling Systems and an undiclosed party in the offshore industry have awarded the orders to Niron Staal.

Co-maker VOSTA LMG awarded the largest order which includes construction of cutter heads for DEME in Belgium. These cutters will be installed on DEME’s CSD Ambiorix. The cutter heads shall be delivered in the second and third quarter of this year.

IHC Handling Systems ordered parts for a pile guiding tool for the offshore wind industry. Subsea7 and Bibby Offshoreordered machining work and light steel construction work for their ships ‘Seven Eagle’ and ‘Bibby Sapphire’.

An undisclosed party active in the offshore industry ordered parts which will be used for an offshore construction. The order has been awarded to Niron Staal because of its competences of S690 (high tensile steel) welding. This particular part speci es 150 mm thick K-welds in specially ordered steel plates with CE > 0,72.

Harco Groen: “These orders con rm our expectations. The markets in which we are active, show signs of recovery and it is good to see that our reputation is recognized and that our customers are convinced of the ef ciency and reliability of our services.”

In addition Niron Staal secured a substantial machining order from Nijhuis Pompen (Pentair). The orders give the company a good workload up to the summer of this year.

New dredging and offshore orders give Niron Staal ying

start in 2012

Niron Staal has recently secured orders for advanced equipment in its core markets of dredging and offshore valued to approximately €2,0 million.

We are proud to present the new

SeaWind suit which is tailored

specifically for the emerging offshore

windmill industry and rope access

technique workers.

Main goals in the design and

development process has been to meet

the requirements of the demanding

personnel performing the maintenance

and inspection work on the offshore wind

mills. In this process we have also seen

that many of the same requirements are

valid also for workers exposed to tough

and risky environments on offshore oil

installations.

In the process we have evaluated the

normal work procedures in close

cooperation with personnel engaged the

wind farm industry and rope access

technique workers. Good knowledge of

the actual work situation has put us in the

position to develop a construction with a

balanced combination of functionality

and safety.

Hansen Protection AS is the direct continuance of Helly Hansen PRO AS. Our history dates back many years. Helly Juell Hansen founded his original

"Impregnated clothing and tarpaulin factory" in Moss in 1877. Thus the foundation for the development and core business of Hansen Protection AS was

laid. Hansen Protection is a high-technology company that over the years has developed some of the most advanced survival & immersion suits available

for protecting lives - at or in the sea. More than 250 000 suits have been exported to more than 20 countries throughout the world.

NEWS!

Hansen Protection launch

It has been important for us

that the suit should be easy to

wear and thus be worn at all

times as a coverall to

improve efficiency and

convenience for the user.

Further on, the suit is

optimised to be worn

together with

necessary safety

equipment as seat-

and fall arrest-

harnesses. In line

with this direction, -

we are developing an

inflatable lifejacket

which may be integrated

with the harness without

preventing normal

movement patterns.

Hansen Protection put

emphasis on an attractive

design.

However design should

always be deflected from

the function.

Key features built into the SeaWind suit to

meet these requirements are:

Ergonomy – pre-shaped construction

with 100% freedom of movement

Breathability – durable fabrics

with highly breathable

properties from GoreTex

Lightweight – made as a

shell product to reduce

weight

Ventilation – waterproof pit-zips

(underarm-zips) to enhance

ventilation in controlled situations

Waterproof zip in collar for easy

donning

Pockets – roomy pockets

constructed with mesh to

enhance the breathable

properties of the fabric and

placed where they are of no hindrance

to normal movement

Gloves and hood in neoprene, lifting

becket and pen-pocket

For easy integration with safety

equipment as harnesses and SeaLion

lifejackets, the suit is “clean” on both

chest and back

The suit fulfils the requirements of the

IMO/Solas LSA code, as a 1 hour

immersion suit without internal

buoyancy, and as a Constant wear suit

according to ISO 15027-1 (Class D)

The SeaWind suit is the first generation of

new work suits from Hansen Protection

and serves as a basis for the next models

under development. In the pipeline we

have a SeaWork model made in a heavy

duty oxford/nylon with integrated hard-

toe boots and with the possibility to

integrate an inner lining with insulation

and buoyancy.hansenprotection.no

1. Who are you, how old are you and where did your cradle stand? My name is Wim Schouwenaar, 43 years old, born and raised in Den Helder

2. What does your home situation look like? Living together, having 4 great kids, of which the oldest one, Ashley, is working in our heliport of ce at Den Helder Airport.

3. What is your current position and where is your stand?Owner of Den Helder Support Service (DHSS) and Marine Support Service Ghana Ltd (MSSG. Both companies are working as Ships Agencies and helicopter ground handlers in Holland and Ghana. We have of ces in Port of Den Helder at Nieuwediepkade, at Den Helder Airport and in Ghana we are

based in Tema and Takoradi, the oil & gas base for Ghana.

In addition to our Customers in the shipping sector, both companies are very active in serving our clients in the Oil & Gas Industry.

4. Which are your daily activities?Managing our operations in Holland, containing all major ports of Holland, where DHSS is serving her clients. Maintaining our client contact relations, to keep our strong relationship, on which we are focussed and proud, as getting a client is one, but keeping the client and keep up with our highly quali ed service level is something else. Beside this, I travel to our operation in Ghana frequently, to make sure all operations are running smoothly in West Africa.

5. Which schools did you attend?I started off at Wilhelmina Mavo and after this I went to Johannes College and ended high school and MEAO De Schalm, all in Den Helder. When I started in the business where I am working now, I followed a study as Customs Clerk, at that time a 2 years course, once a week, given in Amsterdam in evening time, after work. Beside this I followed a PSFO course (Port Security Facility Of cer), which is a work related course, as of ISPS regulations after 0911.

6. How did you end up in the offshore industry? When I nished high school, I applied for a job with Service International, a Ships Agency, based in Den Helder, with its head of ce (Oudkerk) in Rotterdam. Straight from the start,

I really liked the Agency business, being part of the logistical chain for the Offshore Industry, as every day is different and absolutely not boring.

7. How long have you been working in the offshore industry? Since 1989, so 23 years in the business. 1st May this year it will be the 15th anniversary of our company Den Helder Support Service.

8. Tell us your dreams for the future.Stay healthy and see how my children are making their career in the world we live in. Hope they will have a happy life with their children, so we all are able to have lots of nice holidays together in the second home abroad I wish to have one day.

9. Who would you like to trade places with?Nobody in person, but Bear Grylls for example, is a person who is a survivor, no matter what happens.

10. How do you spend your leisure time?My leisure time is very limited, since the Oil & Gas Industry is a 24/7 world, but if I am “off the call” I like to spend time with my family, watch sports and enjoy

the life I am living with all its aspects.

11. Do you keep track of the news? If so, which item, national or regional, has had the greatest impact on you last month?I read several newspapers and magazines. The world’s economy and Dutch government issues we all can see at the Dutch television these days, do not give that much of a trust to all the people. This sometimes frightens me these days…where do we go in this world?

12. What is your motto in life?TBe honest and do not play games. What you give, is what you get

13. Who would you like to nominate for the next edition and why?I would like to nominate Mark Visser, a former colleguee, who is currently working for Seaway Heavy Lifting as vessel manager of Oleg Strashnov.

14. What are your plans for the (near) future? To expand our companies and still give the same service level as we do at the moment with a dedicated professional team of employees.

In the course of their stay in Germany, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, the Federal Minister of Power, Prof. Bart Nnaji, and an attached high-ranking political and industrial delegation, visited the Siemens gas turbine factory in Berlin on April 20, 2012. In this context, an agreement was signed between the company and the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Power in order to strengthen their strategic partnership. Under the terms of the agreement, Siemens will on a case-by-case basis consider to support the fi nancing of power plant projects in Nigeria.

Siemens strengthens Energy partnership with Nigeria

At the same time, Siemens announced plans to build up a new service workshop for heavy duty gas turbines in the country and will support Nigeria with a study on the integration of renewables in the country`s energy mix. Furthermore, the Nigerian company Scanpower and Siemens signed a technical partnership agreement for the construction of a 1,600 megawatts (MW) gas turbine power station at Lekki in Lagos state.“A reliable and affordable supply of electricity is the decisive factor in further developing Nigeria´s economy and society”, said Michael Suess, CEO of the Energy Sector and member of the Managing Board of Siemens AG. “The agreements shall be mutually bene cial to the economy of Nigeria via signi cant advancements in the power sector as well as for the business of Siemens in one of the most important markets in Africa. Lagos, as one of the

fastest growing mega cities in the world, is seeking for a signi cant improvement in its power supply. The decision of Scanpower and its Joint Venture partners to build, together with Siemens as technical partner, a modern and environmentally-friendly gas turbine power station, is an essential contribution to increase the power generation capacity and the security of power supply under the framework of the privatization of the energy sector in Nigeria”, Suess added.Siemens has already delivered gas turbines for the power stations Afam V and Geregu I, which ranks among the most reliable and available plants in this country. Geregu Phase II is currently under construction and is expected to deliver electricity to the grid before the end of the year 2 / 3 Siemens AG Corporate Communications and Government Affairs Wittelsbacherplatz 2, 80333 Munich Germany

With stakeholder expectations of operational performance in hazardous industries ever increasing, operational risk management is a board level challenge. Petrotechnics today announced the launch of Proscient, its Operational Performance & Predictive Risk software platform. It provides senior management in hazardous industries the ability to reduce risk, optimize performance and drive continuous improvement across their global operations.

The biggest operational risk occurs when people interact with the plant. This interaction is the leading cause of HiPo’s, 2nd leading cause of fatalities and a signi cant contributing factor in process safety incidents. Organizations typically have rigorous corporate processes for process safety, occupational safety and people management, with systems and data that provide indicators and close the assurance loop. However, when thousands of people interact with the plant every day to do repair or maintenance work, there are limited or no systems and often only paper based processes. This leaves a large gap in the assurance loop with no feedback on performance. In this critical area organizations can only judge

performance after the event, i.e. with lagging indicators and audit.

Recognizing this critical gap in operational assurance, Petrotechnics’ Proscient closes the loop in the riskiest part of operations. The system intelligently embeds corporate, regional and local policies and processes ensuring they are consistently delivered in frontline practice. This provides senior management with insight and oversight over their global frontline operations.

The system captures data as part of routine work processes such as type of work, volume of work, interaction of work and associated human factors. Common metrics can be established across operations to provide a common indicator of the operational risk associated with the work being performed. For the rst time the organization has a common means of understanding the relationship between delivering performance and operational risk. This data captured is then turned into meaningful insight providing clarity and con dence to improve decision making.

Phil Murray, chief executive of cer at Petrotechnics, said; “Our new product is designed to provide senior management with the tools to not only address the way operations are set up across the enterprise, but to ensure and vastly improve upon how the work is executed on a day-to-day basis while providing the means to measure performance. It is the ideal platform for organizations to further embed a culture of

continuous improvement within their operations.” Functionality of the product includes:

An Enterprise PlatformConnect the strategic intent of corporate policy to operational practiceEnterprise integration capabilities with corporate IT Operations Infrastructure such as Maintenance Management Systems, Planning Systems, ERP and HSE systemsFlexibility to ensure corporate, regional and local standards are operationalized

Dynamic tools to optimize work in time, space and riskWork con ict detection improves decision makingReal time risk pro les of the plant

Operational Intelligence provides Insight, Oversight and Corporate GovernanceCommon Risk and Ef ciency indices for the Enterprise, Assets and Plants providing real governance over operational activityOptimize operations with integrated business analytics capabilities

“Our system turns data captured as a part of routine working into operational intelligence for decision makers across the organization,” said Murray. “For the rst time, operational leaders can start to understand the relationship between performance and risk and proactively manage the organization to a less risky and more optimized performance.”

• Will gas replace oil as America’s primary energy source by 2030?• Should operators always be liable for exploration and production risks?• Has US investment in deepwater R&D stalled since Macondo? Participants will be invited to vote

‘yes’ or ‘no’ to these questions each day, using their business cards as ballot slips. The results of each day’s question will be announced the following morning, before voting on a new issue begins. The poll will also completed online by senior professionals from across the industry.

Pekka Paasivaara, member of the GL Executive Board, said: “After a period of volatility, this year’s Offshore Technology Conference will demonstrate how quickly the American oil and gas industry is returning to growth and stability. But there are still a number of issues that are being debated by professionals across the industry that are key to the future success of the sector; particularly when it comes to innovation, risk and the

growth of the unconventional gas market.

“In conducting these polls, GL Noble Denton is able to capture our

clients’ expectations for the future progress of the sector. We’re looking forward to welcoming conference attendees to our stand to have their say.”

To participate in the poll, visit GL Noble Denton at stand number 2241-K. Participants will be entered into a prize draw to win a new iPad after the show.

The results of the polls will be available after the conference at:www.gi-nobledenton.com

The Dutch offshore contractor Tideway, specialized in offshore dredging, landfall construction and pipeline stabilization, has purchased Amarcon’s OCTOPUS-Onboard for her rock dumping vessel Rollingstone. For a period of nine months Tideway leased OCTOPUS-Onboard for the purpose of response

monitoring & prediction and heavy weather decision support onboard the Rollingstone. In this period Tideway tested and evaluated the software to its fullest, leading to purchase of the whole system in January of 2012. With OCTOPUS-Onboard installed on the vessel, the master of the vessels has a clear

indication of operational windows for rock dumping operations and under which heading the fall-pipe can be let down into the sea.

Amarcon’s Jaap Jan Stoker is content with the ongoing collaboration between Tideway and Amarcon: “It means a great deal to us that Tideway decided to purchase our OCTOPUS-Onboard system after the lease period. It is good to see that our producthelps Tideway to execute offshore rocking dumping projects in an effi cient, safe and money saving manner.”

Labtech Services, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of living quarters, offi ce and technical modular buildings, has dispatched its latest large integrated modular building project to the Far East. The company, which is based in Aberdeen, has successfully loaded out its latest cement house on time from Aberdeen Harbour to Qidong Shipyard in China. The deck-mounted structure will be installed on a FPSO (Floating Production Storage and Offl oading) vessel that will ultimately be deployed in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea. It is the fourth unit to be completed and will deck mounted on new vessels for the same client.

The cement house module - which weighs in excess of 100 tonnes - provides a packaging solution for offshore cementing equipment and comprises an engine, pump and mixing units. It also features an HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) system and fi re and gas protection system, with customised control panels. The cement house was constructed in three sub-modules, given the constraints imposed by site lifting capacity. The units and HVAC systems were installed at Labtech Services, making the units mechanically complete. The entire cement house was trial fi tted together with all major items installed and organised to enable easy separation and re-joining of

the modules at the shipyard.David Soper, managing director of Labtech Services said: “This is a signifi cant project for Labtech in terms of scale and scope and we are pleased to be able to announce another successful and timely completion. It is testament to our capabilities and our international reach and further reinforces our credentials as a leading global provider of modular systems for the energy industry.”

The project also illustrates the steady and continuous growth of Labtech following its recent acquisition by Specialist Services Group in November 2011. Mr Soper said the company anticipates further success over the coming year.

CombinatieWaarom hebben jullie gekozen voor Quick ange? “Valve Team Europe verzorgt afsluiterprojecten

FIRST VESSEL TRIALS NEW MULTI-MILLION POUND BERTH AT ABERDEEN HARBOUR’s TORRY QUAY

The vessel is the rst to have used the new facilities, which include 300metres of realigned, deep water berths, a stronger quayside for heavier lifts and a wider channel in the River Dee, designed to facilitate improved vessel navigation. These features are the result of an initial £19million investment by Aberdeen Harbour Board.

Ken Reilly, engineering director of Aberdeen Harbour, said: “There is a growing trend for increasingly large, deep drafted vessels. The completion of this rst phase, an important stage in one of the harbour’s largest civil engineering undertakings in recent years, is a cornerstone of our ongoing development. With the wharf now fully operational, it will help to ensure that we continue to meet the needs of existing and new users.

“The port plays a vital role in terms of infrastructure, both regionally and nationally. Continued investment is key to ensuring that we are in the best possible position to sustain the provision of the modern facilities that our customers both expect and deserve. This will enable us to bring further opportunities to the North-east, now and in the future.”

Development work on Phase Two has now commenced, with an estimated £15million to be spent on this part of the project.

Expected to take around 12 months to complete, the work comprises the construction of a 100m long, deep-drafted quay, consisting steel piles and reinforced concrete.

The River Dee Dock will then be lled with rock and other excavated material, before being surfaced with concrete. This will create an additional 20,000 square metres of operational space.

The fi rst phase of a multi-million pound redevelopment project of Aberdeen Harbour’s Torry Quay has been completed. A project milestone, it was marked by the vessel Skandi Foula, which docked at the quay before loading cargo destined for a North Sea installation.

With upwards of £15.5million invested in projects throughout 2011, including the rst phase of the Torry Quay redevelopment and the creation of stronger and deeper quays at Commercial Quay East, the port was able to handle larger vessels and more diverse cargoes, including six shipments of wind turbine parts destined for the Hill of Towie onshore wind farm project in Aberdeenshire.

Aberdeen Harbour Board has planned a further £20million for continued development throughout 2012.

This will include work on Torry Quay Phase Two, which will comprise the in lling of the River Dee Dock and the construction of a 100metres of additional, deepwater berthing creating an extra 20,000 square metres of operational space.

Other projects include, widening and deepening the navigation channel in order to accommodate the latest generation of vessels servicing the oil and gas and renewables industries, as well as helping to combat the impact of the occasional South easterly swell. Road access to Waterloo Quay will also be improved and the existing transit shed will undergo refurbishment to become a receipts and dispatches facility.

The Board will also continue to work with Aberdeen City Council on the Aberdeen Harbour Development Framework, which considers the physical and visual connections between the Harbour and the City.

Colin Parker, chief executive of Aberdeen Harbour said: “Aberdeen Harbour is a major economic driver here in Aberdeen

and the North east of Scotland. It is vital that we engage with our customers and stakeholders so that we can continue to provide the excellent facilities and maintain, and build on the levels of activity we are currently witnessing.

“As a Trust Port, all pro ts are reinvested back into projects that will allow us to achieve this. The programme of activity planned for 2012 is ambitious but will mean that we are well equipped to meet the needs of our customers and play our part in attracting new business to Aberdeen.”

The Board actively engaged with the local community throughout 2011, supporting many organisations including; Aberdeen and Grampian Chamber of Commerce, the Scottish Council for Development and Industry, Aberdeen Performing Arts, Women in Property, Cornerstone and the Foyer.

In recognition of its overall success, the Board was also presented with the lifetime achievement award at the 2011 Aberdeen and Grampian Chamber of Commerce, Northern Star Business Awards.

“Positioned at the heart of the city, we are committed to the communities that live around the port and the wider North east, continued Mr Parker.

“We were truly humbled to receive a prestigious award at the Aberdeen and Grampian Chamber of Commerce Northern Star Business Awards. It underlines the commitment of our staff and customers in ensuring that Aberdeen Harbour continues to be a success, today, tomorrow and for generations to come.”

Aberdeen harbour chief executive underlines the

importance of future investmentAberdeen Harbour continued to strengthen its position as a key economic driver throughout 2011, with record growth in traffi c. In line with previous years, overall vessel tonnage increased by seven per cent, from 24.2 million gross tonnes in 2010, to 25.9 million gross tonnes in 2011. This amounted to an increase in annual turnover of six per cent, rising from £22.64million in 2010 to £24.1million in 2011 and a retained profi t of £2.11million in 2011, compared to £1.13million in 2010.

in IJmuiden zal doormaken.

Among the 12 presentations, Expro will discuss its AX-S system, a unique remotely-operated intervention system. The technology is transforming the way in which oil and gas companies can access and intervene on their subsea well assets at any depth down to 10,000-ft. In addition, last year’s Innovation Award winner, Matthew Billingham of

Schlumberger, will discuss the company’s slickline conveyed perforating, pipe recovery and plug setting services.

The company will also describe how the use of an enhanced telemetry technology platform increases the chance of success during an intervention, while Petroleum Technology Company AS (PTC) will

showcase its wellhead VR lubricator and toolkit.

Other highlights include Statoil, which will present its Kvitebjorn case study, detailing lessons learned following the completion of its first successful HP/HT coiled tubing milling job in the Norwegian continental shelf. Weatherford will discuss the retrieval and reinstallation of a large diameter single trip straddle system.

The latest in a series of events held by ICoTA to date, the 7th Well Intervention Seminar will be held at the Radisson Blu Atlantic Hotel in Stavanger on May 31. A networking reception will follow the technical programme, with a formal dinner in the evening.

ICoTA Europe chairman, Callum Munro, said: “This year’s seminar consists of an exciting programme of technical presentations.

“The event is a vital platform in bringing together international specialists from around world with experience in similar operating environments to discover, debate and discuss the most innovative solutions to continue driving forward the successful development of the oil and gas industry.

“Year upon year, ICoTA Europe always receives a very positive response to this event and we are confident that once again we will provide a detailed insight into the issues facing all well intervention disciplines.

“We are expecting a healthy turnout of members and non members at the event and I would encourage anyone with an interest in the subjects being discussed or an involvement in the sector to attend.”

Leading provider of liftboats, Hercules Offshore, has awarded HB Rentals a six to 12-month contract for its Amber Jack self-propelled jack-up barge. The deal will see the company provide four, eight-man accommodation modules including service provision from installation to power generation and sewerage system. The second new contract award is from Abu Dhabi-based National Petroleum Construction Company (NPCC) and comprises a six-month rental agreement for

four accommodation modules including modular stairways and walkways. HB Rentals was also awarded a contract from global engineering and construction business, MacDermott International. The scope of the contract includes accommodation modules, toilets, of ces for use as an emergency overnight shelter for the carousel deck of a barge currently moored in Dubai and will be working in KSA.Michael Bradley, Director of Sales and Business Development at HB

Rentals said: “The new contract wins are testament to our growing success across the GCC and the Middle East since establishing our presence here just over a year ago. We are delighted to have won such signi cant contracts that were put out to competitive tender. “Our focus moving forward will be continuing to deliver outstanding quality of product as well as service to our customers, ensuring that we remain the accommodation specialists of choice in the region. We are con dent that the year ahead will hold a continued stream of business opportunities and we look forward to announcing further deals in the months to come.”

Global offshore accommodation specialist to the oil and gas industry HB Rentals has signed three new agreements in the Middle East since the turn of the year. The combined value of the contracts is over $1million.

Strong start to 2012 for HB Rentals with three new contract wins

Offshore Solutions BV (OSBV), the joint venture between AMEC and Cofely Nederland NV, is to receive a prestigious Hart’s Special Meritorious Awards for Engineering at the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) in Houston

The ercely contested award will be presented to Offshore Solutions as winner of the facilities category for its Offshore Access System (OAS).

The OAS is a 21-metre, hydraulically operated, telescopic gangway, tted with an active heave compensation system, enabling the safe transfer of personnel from a vessel to an offshore installation. It is the only heave compensated gangway system that can maintain a permanent connection and has an outstanding safety record, having transferred in excess of 120,000 personnel without any recordable incidents since 2006.

When engaged, a motion reference unit in its active hydraulic system maintains the walkway tip at a constant height relative to the horizon. This allows the walkway to be connected safely in sea states up to 3m signi cant wave height.

The OAS can radically change how work can be done on offshore installations. An OAS

and vessel combination can ful l a wide range of requirements; in addition to providing extra accommodation and the transfer of personnel to the installation, the OAS vessel can also be deployed to conduct other duties such as standby vessel and ROV or diving work. This exibility enables the system to reduce operating costs.

Lindsay Young, managing director at Offshore Solutions, said: “Winning this award is a signi cant achievement for us and is testament to the expert team at Offshore Solutions, who work diligently to deliver safety, ef ciency and high productivity to clients through continuous development of the OAS. “We are honoured that the capabilities of the system have been recognised and are con dent that it will continue to lead the way in marine personnel transfer.

“The OAS continues to be one of the safest and most ef cient methods for accessing offshore installations 24 hours a day.”

Now in its 43rd year, the awards celebrate engineering innovation assessing each entry for its concept, suitability as a practical solution to a real oil eld problem and potential for improving ef ciency or safety and pro tability.

Offshore solutions wins major industry accolade

Offshore solutions succeeds in Quatar as oas achieves 40,000 offshore personnel transfersOffshore Solutions BV (OSBV), the joint venture between AMEC and Cofely Nederland NV, has achieved more than 40,000 safe personnel transfers from a vessel to offshore platforms on its heave compensated Offshore Access System (OAS)*, currently working in The Gulf.

The company has also recently secured two new contracts with major operators in Qatar for the safe transfer of personnel to and from offshore platforms, bringing the total of OAS units in the Middle East to three.

This underlines the bene ts of the OAS in maintaining operational ef ciency, particularly in the adverse weather conditions Qatar experiences over the winter months, during which time the ability to transfer personnel to an offshore installation by helicopter or boat landing is severely restricted. It is the only heave-compensated gangway on the market that can remain permanently connected to an offshore installation in sea states of up to 3metres signi cant wave height.

With six years global experience, the company’s OAS has made in excess of 7,700 operational connections and transferred more than 123,000 personnel.

Lindsay Young, managing director of OSBV, said: “We continue to build on our impressive track record offshore Qatar, with three units now in the country. These latest successes for the OAS highlight the effectiveness of the system in The Gulf and its ability to ensure continued operations in challenging conditions.

“The operational and safety bene ts of the OAS are widely recognised. It can dramatically improve ef ciency and optimise the workforce, which will ultimately lead to considerable cost reductions.”

Offshore Solutions has been operating in Qatar since 2010, and as a result of growing demand for the OAS in The Gulf, the company has underlined its commitment to the region by registering a branch of ce in Qatar.

“We have been continually developing our business in Qatar since our rst contract with Shell”, continues Mr Young. “The three units, and potential of more before the end of this year, have secured our position in the Middle East and our base in Qatar will allow us to capitalise on these opportunities and grow the business further.”

Swire Oilfi eld Services (Swire), the leading global oilfi eld service provider, has reinforced its commitment to growth with a signifi cant investment in its North American operations, as part of the company’s global $150 million investment this year.

The company entered the Gulf of Mexico in 2007 with the establishment of an operations headquarters in Houma, Louisiana. Since then it has rapidly expanded with nine new facilities across the Gulf coast and North America, including Port Fourchon, Morgan City and Lafayette in Louisiana; Galveston, Three Rivers, Carrizo Springs and Midland/Odessa in Texas; Kenai, Alaska; Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago and a new corporate of ce in The Woodlands, Texas.

In the same period staff numbers have risen from 50 to more than 110 across North America and

Swire intends to further triple its employees in the next three years, underlining its commitment to the region and the industry as a whole.

Swire, which has a global eet of 60,000 units, has now signi cantly increased its local eet across North America with more than 5,000 units to support its existing offshore business. In addition to its full range of equipment, Swire will also continue with its investment in sustainability and the environment through its total water management services, which is associated with the hydraulic fracturing market in the non-conventional shale plays across North America.

Swire’s North American operations also continue to support the growing demand for improving standards in the Gulf of Mexico. Swire operates the largest rental eet of DNV 2.7-1 certi ed containers and baskets in the world. This standard is recognized at a global level as having the highest regard to safety, quality and traceability.

Steve Hardwick, president of North America, said: “The underlying principals of exceptional performance in HSEQ, and delivering the highest levels of customer service continue to be the foundation on which our growth is built. There is currently a high demand for safe, reliable, high quality, and internationally approved offshore cargo carrying units around the world.

“Our Gulf of Mexico eet exceeds any lifting policies, guidelines or recommendations set forth by operators, governing bodies or af liated organizations. As the largest global provider of these units and associated services, Swire has the resources and commitment to invest in growth and to assist both the onshore and offshore industry in achieving its safety, quality and productivity targets while conserving our environment. We are proud to accommodate the needs of both operators and service providers in the Gulf of Mexico.”

SWIRE OILFIELD SERVICES CONTINUES TO GROW NORTH AMERICAN OPERATIONS

The event is a regional extension of the long-running Gastech Conference & Exhibition, and will be the rst dedicated Asian LNG & natural gas conference within the Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) to address the security and supply of gas. The event also looks to develop the region's gas infrastructure and projects.

The key themes of the two-day conference at GAS will focus around "The Role of Natural Gas & LNG in the Future South-East Asian Energy Mix". Sessions at the summit include:• Development & Financing of Asian Gas Infrastructure & Projects• Securing Reliable, Long-Term Supplies of Gas & LNG to the

Region• Impact of North American LNG Exports on Local Markets• Potential Developments in LNG as a Transport Fuel• The Role for Gas as part of the Future Energy Mix

In addition to key discussions around fuelling the demand for gas in Asia and regulatory issues affecting foreign exports, GAS also aims to facilitate relations between international governments and stakeholders in order to develop Asia's LNG and natural gas industry through infrastructure development, project nance and delivery.

The 5th Annual SIEW 2012 is the foremost platform for policymakers, energy practitioners and commentators to discuss energy issues, strategies and solutions. For 2012, the EMA has incorporated GAS as part of the annual SIEW programme line-up, to re ect the increasingly important role that gas plays in Asia's growing energy mix.

EMA's Chief Executive Chee Hong Tat says: "The global gas markets are experiencing interesting developments. Holding the GAS event at SIEW

2012 will provide policymakers and industry leaders an excellent platform to discuss the different challenges and opportunities in this sector."

Mark Carr, President of dmg :: event's Global Energy Division, adds: "The Gastech team are delighted to bring the Gas Asia Summit to Singapore International Energy Week. Increasing energy demand driven by the rising economic growth in Asia, coupled with technological advances and shifts in the gas supply and demand landscape, is generating enormous opportunities and challenges. GAS will provide a forum for the gas industry to nd ways to overcome the challenges and capture the opportunities in this sector."

GAS will look to attract around 400 executive-level delegates, namely international developers and nanciers of key LNG and natural gas projects, banks and utilities. Supporters and participants for GAS include Singapore LNG Corporation, Cheniere, Wood Mackenzie, Fluor, Total, Worley Parsons, Societe Generale, Galway Group, and more.

Gastech to debut Gas Asia Summit at Singapore International Energy Week 2012 addressing security and supply of gasThe organisers of Gastech and the Energy Market Authority (EMA) of Singapore are pleased to announce that the launch of the executive-level Gas Asia Summit Conference & Networking (GAS) will take place on 24-25 October 2012 at the Marina Bay Sands Singapore.

Offshore modular enclosure rm Labtech, which employs 90 staff across two sites in Aberdeen, was acquired by Specialist Services at the end of last year. Until three years ago, Labtech had operated a highly successful rental eet in the UK Continental Shelf. Now the company’s new owners are committed to reviving and growing the rental activity once more.

Specialist Services’ chief executive of cer Ian Rogers said: “When we acquired Labtech, we inherited an already well established name in the North Sea, with a strong reputation but a need for some stability. Our commitment to the company is long term, and the revitalisation of the hire eet is an indication of our intent.”The rental operation will start with 15 units, predominantly 20ft drilling and engineering cabins and laboratories,

but anticipated demand is expected to see the eet increase to up to 50 units in the next 12 months with additional jobs at the Aberdeen facilities. The new eet of cabins, all Zone 1 certi ed and NORSOK compliant, will serve the growing North Sea market and international requirements.

“There is certainly a growing international rental market and we aim to exploit that by ful lling the needs of our clients around the world,” said Mr Rogers.

“We are recognised for the provision of hire eets in the Middle East and Singapore, and through our acquisition of Labtech we will extend our services into the North Sea. We recognise that there is a de nite requirement for high quality accommodation in the UKCS and we intend to serve that market and others from our Aberdeen operations.”

The Energia MK KF, S.A. de C.V., combined heat and power plant with a total installed capacity of 36 MW will be located in Altamira, in Tamaulipas State, Mexico. One-third of the total electrical capacity will be used for the Kaltex facility on site and two-thirds will be fed into the grid for other Kaltex facilities in Mexico. The plant will meet approximately 40 percent of Kaltex’s power needs in Mexico. The SGT-750 turbine will generate all the process steam needed for producing synthetic bers. The Siemens scope of supply encompasses supply, installation and commissioning of the SGT-750 gas turbine together with the electrical generator, heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) with supplementary ring system and auxiliary systems“This order from Mexico shows that our SGT-750 gas turbine is now also gaining momentum in the 60-Hertz market,” said Markus Tacke, CEO of the

Industrial Power Business Unit of Siemens Energy. The SGT-750 gas turbine stands out thanks to its customer bene ts in particular, its high degree of availability and reliability. With a downtime of only 17 days in 17 years, if generator swap is done on site, this gas turbine has the highest uptime in its class. The modular design SGT-750 provides the ideal customized solution for excellent serviceability. The machine attains an electrical ef ciency of 38.7 percent, which corresponds to a shaft ef ciency of 40 percent. The SGT-750 represents the latest development in the Siemens gas turbine portfolio. The very rst order for the supply of a SGT-750 industrial gas turbine came 2011 from WINGAS GmbH, a joint venture of the BASF subsidiary Wintershall and the Russian company Gazprom. The turbine will be deployed in the landfall station of the Nord Stream pipeline in Lubmin, Germany.

Siemens Energy has received a fi rst order from North America for the supply of its SGT-750 industrial gas turbine. Purchaser is Energia MK KF, S.A. de C.V., a subsidiary of textile manufacturer Grupo Kaltex. When commercially operational in October 2013, the 36-megawatt (MW) facility will supply electricity to the textile facilities operated by Grupo Kaltex in Mexico.

gedood.

UK-headquartered leader in integrated drilling waste expands its reach to better serve growing U.S. Market

Aberdeen headquartered-TWMA, a leader in integrated drilling waste management and environmental solutions, has launched its U.S. expansion with the opening of the company’s newest manufacturing base in Houston. The new facility will allow TWMA to manufacture American-made equipment and meet growing demand for its services in the United States and around the world.

“This new of ce has the potential to change the dynamics of the entire company,” said Ian Nicolson, TWMA’s vice president of the Americas. “We’re bringing a whole new range of services and technologies to the U.S. oil and gas industry. We can save operators $30 to $40 thousand

dollars per well by handling and treating their drilling wastes with our specialised waste management solutions.”

Demand for TWMA’s waste management solutions is booming. The company has already won several U.S. contracts with oil and gas operators, which has helped fuel the expansion.

Operating both offshore and onshore, TWMA handles and treats drill cuttings and associated oil industry wastes. Using state-of-the-art technology, drilling wastes are recovered, recycled and reused, recovering signi cant operator costs whilst minimising environmental impact.

While initial plans focus primarily on expanding in the U.S. market, having a Houston-based facility will allow TWMA to extend its reach into Canada and South America, Nicolson said.

Through the Houston of ce, TWMA will increase the production capability for its entire range of waste management solutions to service the U.S. and international markets. This will include the TCC RotoTruck and TCC RotoMill, which are currently utilised globally to thermally process drilling wastes onshore and offshore, and supporting equipment including vacuum systems, dryers and TWMA’s cuttings collection and distribution system (CCDS).

TWMA has been operational in the United States since 2008, but the new Houston facility will be the company’s rst regional manufacturing site. Currently, 20 employees have been hired to work at the new facility. TWMA expects to triple this number by July and plans to have 200 to 300 employees hired in the next 24 months.
