In de miljoenen stad Bangalore (9 miljoen inwoners) in het zuiden van India is het verkeer door de snelle groei van de stad volledig vastgelopen. De bereikbaarheid in de stad is zeer slecht, net als de luchtkwaliteit. De lokale overheid wil hier verandering in brengen door beter openbaarvervoer in de vorm van de aanleg van een Metro in combinatie met de (her)introductie van de fiets als flexibel schoon individueel vervoer. Hiermee zal het aantal auto’s sterk moeten afnemen. De vraag is of de bewoners van Bangalore bereid zijn de auto te laten staan en deze om te ruilen voor een fiets. Dr. Ashish Verma van het Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore zal op 17 juni de resultaten van een onderzoek presenteren naar de acceptatie van wandel en fietsafstanden door stedelingen in Bangalore. Het onderzoek sluit aan bij het strategisch concept plan dat de Netherlands Bicycle Partnership (NBP) op verzoek van de deelstaat Karnataka (Directorate Urban Land Transport, Urban Development Department) en de gemeente Bangalore heeft gemaakt. Na de lezing kunnen er vragen worden beantwoord en zal er een discussie zijn waarbij ook andere zaken van dit vraagstuk aan de orde kunnen komen zoals de sociale, culturele en economische aspecten.
