In het Surinaamse oerwoud staat de klok al duizenden jaren stil. Vrijwel het gehele binnenland is nog bedekt met oerbos: een wereldrecord. De indianen en marrons die hier leven, wonen vaak nog in traditionele dorpen en voeden zich met de opbrengst van kleinschalige (zwerf)landbouw, jacht en visvangst.Maar er tikt een tijdbom in het bos. Houtkap en commerciële jacht vormen nog niet eens de belangrijkste bedreigingen. Er is een veel groter probleem. Diep in het oerwoud graven tienduizenden gelukzoekers naar de koning van de metalen. Chemisch symbool Au, atoomnummer 79. Goud.

De goudzoekers gebruiken agressieve, nietsontziende methoden en vervuilen zowel het bos als de rivieren met kwik. Uit onderzoek blijkt dat veel bewoners inmiddels onaanvaard-baar hoge concentraties kwik in hun lichaam hebben, vooral als gevolg van het eten van ver-ontreinigde vis. Als er niet heel snel en radicaal wordt ingegrepen, is hier geen toekomst meer voor de indianen en marrons. Want een schone rivier is de basis van hun bestaan.

Fotograaf Thijs Heslenfeld ging naar Suriname om het leven in het binnenland in beeld te brengen – in het licht van de enorme bedreigingen die loeren. Het werd geen somber verhaal; eerder een ode aan de bewoners van het Surinaamse binnenland, hun unieke levenswijze en de fabelachtig mooie plekken waar zij leven.

Maar het werd ook een verhaal dat tot bezinning stemt. Dit boek laat zien hoe mensen zelfs in de 21e eeuw nog in balans met de natuur kunnen leven. Maar ook hoe die kwetsbare balans eenvoudig vernietigd kan worden door wereldwijde economische krachten waar de bewoners zelf part noch deel aan hebben.

In 2007 en 2011 ging onderzoeker Saskia Konniger naar India om in het spoor van de edelsmeedtradities van Rajput koningshuizen en het Mogolrijk gouden sieraden te verwerven voor het Museum Volkenkunde in Leiden. Het onderzoek richtte zich op de invloed van processen van globalisering en de huidige mondiale economie op het leven van edelsmeden en hun vak. De resultaten geven een beeld van de wereld van de goudsmeden, van hun producten en van de consumen-tenmarkt anno nu. Ze verkende de Rajasthaanse hoofdstad Jaipur, een mondiaal edelsteenhandelscentrum, ze bezocht juweliershuizen, sprak handelaren en was te gast op kleurrijke Rajput huwelijken waar jonge Rajputi’s een weg proberen te vinden tussen traditie en vernieuwing. De eeuwenoude kundan-techniek, die faam verwierf in de Mogolperiode, bleek nog in zwang. Konniger reisde af naar Bikaner, de stad waar goudsmeden zich toeleggen op de kundan-techniek, en maakte kennis met de goudsmeden. De Verborgen Tuin, goudsmeden in India gaat in op achtergronden van de Mogol- en Rajputhofculturen en is een levendig verslag van de Rajasthaanse steden Bikaner en Jaipur anno nu. Een boeiende kijk in de wereld van Indiaas goud en edelstenen.

Medisch antropoloog Wies Dulfer (1946), maakte voor het eerst kennis met Afrika in 1976. Met haar echtgenoot Willem Klein Poelhuis, oogarts, en kinderen woonde en werkte ze tot 1982 in Ghana. Daarna deed zij meerdere onder-zoeken in Afrika naar family planning, naar vrouwen en ontwikkelingsbeleid en naar traditi-onele geneeswijzen. In dit boek laat ze ons ken-nis maken met Tsjaad, waar traditionele gene-zers oogklachten nog steeds behandelen met behulp van de staarsteek.

Slechtziendheid door grijze staar komt we-reldwijd veel voor, voornamelijk bij mensen van zeventig jaar en ouder. Oogartsen opereren de staar poliklinisch, implanteren een kunstlens waarna de mensen met goed zicht weer naar huis gaan. In Afrika bezuiden de Sahara is echter nauwelijks goede oogzorg.

In De Staarsteker neemt Wies Dulfer, alias Louise, de lezers mee naar de droge, onherberg-zame regio’s in Noordoost-Tsjaad. Zij laat ons kennis maken met de mensen en schetst een beeld van de oogproblemen in de regio’s Abéché en Biltine. Zij verklaart het fenomeen staarste-ken: een eeuwenoude behandelmethode voor de behandeling van bepaalde oogziektes, die tot 1880 in Europa werd gepraktiseerd, en tot de dag van vandaag in Tsjaad wordt toegepast.

Louise is nauw betrokken bij het werk van haar man, oogarts Dr. Williams, die de moderne oogzorg in Tsjaad heeft gepromoot in de hoop het blindsteken te voorkomen.

Ze geeft ons een kijkje achter de schermen van de mobiele oogkampen die, uitgezonden door het Zwitserse Rode Kruis, de afgelegen dorpen bezochten en ter plekke honderden staarpatiënten met succes opereerden.

De binnenstad van Willemstad is inmiddels zelfs uitgeroepen tot Unesco Werelderfgoed. Sommige historische panden zijn kolossaal, andere staan onopvallend in kleine achterafsteegjes. Maar allemaal hebben ze hun eigen charme en hun eigen geschiedenis. Zonder de Stichting Monumentenzorg Curaçao was een groot deel van dit culturele erfgoed onder de slopershamer vermorzeld. Sinds 1954 strijdt deze stichting met succes voor behoud en restauratie van Curaçaose monumenten.

In dit boek verweeft journaliste Jeannette van Ditzhuijzen de geschiedenis van de Stichting Monumentenzorg Curaçao met de historie van enkele van de ruim honderd monumenten die de stichting inmiddels bezit. Zo laat zij zien dat het bij de zorg voor monumenten niet alleen gaat om het conserveren van de stenen, maar ook om het behoud van de geschiedenis die er onlosmakelijk mee is verbonden.

Dat Suriname een belangrijke rol heeft gespeeld in WOII is evident. Zo leverde Suriname meer dan 60% van het bauxiet die als grondstof diende voor het vervaardigen van militaire vliegtuigen in de VS. Honderden jonge mannen én vrouwen gingen als vrijwilligers en dienstplichtigen het leger in. Bekend zijn de Surinaamse gunners, die dienst deden op de marine- en koopvaardijschepen van het KNSM. Daarnaast gingen er ongeveer 400 Surinaamse militairen (mannen en vrouwen) naar Oost-Indië om te vechten tegen de Japanners. Velen keerden niet terug van het slagveld in Nederlands-Indië of Europa. En niet te vergeten de Surinamers die hun leven in het verzet gaven en zij die vanwege hun joodse etniciteit niet terugkwamen uit de concentratiekampen. Enkele jaren later werden dezelfde militairen die na hun demobilisatie in 1946 waren afgekeurd opnieuw goedgekeurd en ingezet voor de VN-missie in Korea(1950-1953). Ook tijdens deze missie sneuvelden en raakten Surinamers gewond op het slagveld bij Pusan in Korea.

Over de inzet en de ervaringen van de Surinaamse militairen is helaas vrij weinig bekend. Wie waren die militaire vrijwilligers die over zee gingen? Wat gebeurde met die jonge jongens en meisjes die in het zuiden van Amerika (bijvoorbeeld Florida) werden geconfronteerd met segregatie? Wat gebeurde met hen op de slagvelden? Hoe heeft die oorlog hun jonge levens direct beïnvloed? Wie waren de Surinamers die In Nederland in het verzet

De eerste westerling die ooit Curaçao op zijn netvlies registreerde was Alonso de Ojeda, die de dualiteit van dit eiland beschreef met de woorden: ”Isla de los Gigantes” (Eiland van de reuzen), maar uiteindelijk bestempelde als “Isla inutil” (Nutteloos eiland). Meer dan een eeuw later erkenden de Fransen, de Engelsen en deNederlanders het strategisch belang van dit nutteloze eiland als handelsbasis voor delucratieve transatlantische slavenhandel. Deze dubbele beeldvorming van Curaçao als enerzijds een uniek en anderzijds een nutteloos eiland is door de koloniale eeuwen heen weinig veranderd.

Vanuit het monoculturele westerse perspectief heeft de hybride, multiculturele bastaardcultuur van Curaçao, tot op de dag van vandaag weinig respect kunnen genereren binnen het Nederlandse kunstbeleid. Door deze multiculturele bastaardidentiteit is het onmogelijk de Caraïbische kunst uitsluitend vanuit een westers perspectief te beoordelen. De op het eerste gezicht westerse uitstraling van de beeldende kunst van Curaçao verbergt een Caraïbische invulling die wederom een spiegel vindt in de hybride Caraïbische spiritualiteit. Het het spreekwoord: “What you see is not always what you get” illustreert de complexiteit van het Caraïbische beeldidioom.

De kunstenaars die in deze catalogus voor het voetlicht komen zijn enerzijds “Yu di tera” (Landskinderen) en anderzijds buitenlandse kunstenaars die passanten of migranten zijn gebleken en hun stempel hebben achtergelaten op het culturele erfgoed van Curaçao. De

multidisciplinaire diversiteit van het Curaçaose kunstpanorama is een essentieel onderdeel van deze manifestatie en vind zijn neerslag in de selectie van kunstenaars.

This is the third volume of a series of ten books that discuss the collections of the Tropenmuseum and the histories and stories that accompany them. The books elucidate the often hidden backgrounds of a museum collection, discussing objects within their original context, social histories and their contemporary meaning. The emphasis lies on the history of the specific museum collection, with its different collecting and presentation practices placed in a particular time and place. Each volume is richly illustrated with objects and photographs from the Tropenmuseum collection.

Africa at the Tropenmuseum is not meant to be a general book on art from Africa, but rather a treatise on the formation and development of a specific Africa collection, which started at the beginning of the twentieth century with the fusion of the collections of the Colonial Museum in Haarlem, and the ethnographic collection of Artis, the Amsterdam Zoo. Many early objects were lost again, before Africa was formally integrated in the Tropenmuseum’s policy in 1950, when the colonial phase of the museum was concluded. The following decades saw several changing objectives, from an emphasis on development cooperation towards an orientation on art and culture. Collection policies followed, focusing on daily household objects, popular art and contemporary art and design. The result is a fragmented but vivid collection that gives access to many forms of

African art and culture as well as to the mindset of European collectors, researchers, and museum workers. This richly illustrated book emphasizes this historical context and the way the objects were collected and presented to the public to this day.

During the first half of the twentieth century, the pilgrimage of Muslims to Mecca lay at the heart of the relationship between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Kingdom of the Netherlands. This may seem surprising, but in those days more pil-grims travelled from the Dutch colonial empire to Mecca than from any other country. These pil-grims were Dutch citizens from the Netherlands East Indies (now Indonesia), who undertook the long and perilous voyage across the Indian Ocean to fulfil their religious duties. The authorities of Western Arabia welcomed these pilgrims be-cause they were co-operative and spent signifi-cant amounts of money on their visits to the Holy Places. In those days, however, the pilgrimage to Mecca was difficult and sometimes dangerous, which, in 1872, motivated the Dutch to found a consulate in Jeddah in order to safeguard the well-being of the pilgrims. With the rise of King Ibn Sa‘ûd in the 1920s effective measures were taken to protect pilgrims and their situation im-proved significantly, but successive consuls con-tinued to care for Netherlands pilgrims until after the Second World War, when Indonesia became independent and the mission was handed over to the Indonesians. The focus of the relationship between the two kingdoms then shifted to trade.

This book starts with a description of the pilgrimage to Mecca in the latter half of the nine-teenth and the first half of the twentieth century, and reviews the role of the Netherlands Consul-ate – later a legation – both in supervising Neth-erlands East Indian pilgrims and also in develop-ing diplomatic relations specifically aimed at stim-ulating trade and other areas of co-operation

He has been the manager of more than one hundred innovation projects with different educational institutions and training organisations.

of the Peasantry), which contributed, among other actors, to the dawning,

in 2006, of a new political era in which people who had been excluded since

colonial times reached positions of formal State power.

The primary aim of this book is to present the history of one particular NGO

as part of the history of the social movements and the NGOs in Bolivia (and

Latin America). Between 1970 and 1985 CIPCA carried out its rural development

activities in an informal setting of a group of friends and against a background

of military dictatorships, with the main objective of restoring the validity of

democratic institutions. Once democracy was restored, in 1982, and CIPCA had

become a formal institution, it had to adjust its objectives. Between 1985 and

2006 activities were carried out in an atmosphere of political democracy, in

which economic exclusion of the peasantry and the indigenous population was

nonetheless still present.

This book’s systematisation of 35 years of (CIPCA) history offers the reader a

reference that can serve to deepen reflections on rural development themes that

are still matters of debate today.
