MY DREAMS FOR THE FUTURE
Drawings of Congolese refugee children in B
ForewordMY DREAMS FOR THE FUTUREDrawings of Congolese refugee
children in Burundi
Worldwide there are 34.4 million people who have had to flee their homes.
Almost half of them are children. They include children who are refugees,
asylum-seekers and stateless as well as returnee and internally displaced
children. Although refugee children enjoy comprehensive rights under
international law, more often than not, they are deprived of the most basic
ones, including the right not to face discrimination, the right to health and
the right to education.
This book features a collection of drawings of Congolese refugee children
who live in refugee camps in Burundi. They participated in a drawing
competition on ’’My Dreams for the Future’’. The boys and girls, between 10
and 14 years of age, were asked to draw what they wanted to achieve in life.
The result is amazing. The drawings show how the children see their future,
literally through their own eyes, in a way which is very different from usual
reports on refugee children.
Most of the colourful drawings show hope, resilience and a great deal
of ambition. What is most striking is their keen understanding of the
importance of education in becoming nurses, teachers, pilots or journalists.
They also underscore the human cost of violence and persecution, which
cause millions of people to flee their homes. The drawings are unlike those
that our own children come home with. They depict the risks of child soldier
recruitment, HIV/AIDS, corruption and insufficient medical treatment.

vluchtelingenkinderen in Burundi
vervolging waardoor miljoenen mensen moeten vluchten. Dit is niet het
soort tekeningen waar onze kinderen mee zouden thuiskomen.

MY DREAMS FOR THE FUTURE
Drawings of Congolese refugee children in B
IN THE WORDS OF A CHILD PSYCHOLOGIST
“Take your pencils and pens, because we are going to draw, yeah!”.
For children, drawing is a very safe and fun way of expressing themselves.
But it is actually much more than that. Children draw to show their feelings
and the issues that preoccupy them. For them it is more powerful than
writing because their language knowledge is often too limited. Drawing
comes more naturally to them.
Drawings are often an important element in a child psychologist’s
analysis, which takes into account the construction process, the use of
colour, the proportion of the different elements on paper, the content, the
child’s development level, etc. In other words, they tell us a lot about the
“illustrator”.
These particular drawings show that refugee children still dare to express
their dreams of the future, despite their difficult living conditions.
They demonstrate their force. These children give us a glimpse into their
world of feelings, which can be quite shocking for a Western reader. Being
a child soldier or surviving war are not exactly the kind of experiences our
kids put on paper.
“Survival” is the recurring theme in the children’s drawings. They sometimes
have negative connotations and reveal their fear of being recruited as child
soldiers, for instance. This fear is expressed by severe facial expressions
and the lack of colour in the drawings. However, others express hope by
showing plenty of colours and connections between the different characters
in the drawing. What strikes us in all the drawings is the children’s sense
of responsibility. They consider themselves responsible for the well-being
of their families, which is why they want to get a proper diploma to earn
money, or to provide food for their family members. All of this at an age
when they should have a carefree life....

The merchant of the city
This is how I became a boss, thanks to my business!!
What about you!?
When I started my business, I only had a small shop
and a small amount of money.
My small shop helped me to earn some money to buy a bike.
I learned another profession; I became a taxibike driver.
After managing the money, I was able to afford a motorcycle.
I became a taximoto driver.
Finally, my job as a motorcycle taxi driver permitted me to buy
a COASTER (bus). I am now the driver of my own bus.
De handelaar van de stad
Zo ben ik een baas geworden dankzij
mijn eigen zaak!!

Compare the earth with the moon.
The moon is 13 times smaller than the earth.
I would like to walk on the moon.

I am going to grow a field of corn.
I am going to buy a bike which I am going to use as a taxi.
Later, thanks to the field and the taxi-bike,
I am going to buy a car and a beautiful house.
Thanks to my successful business,
I will go on business trips and maybe
I can even buy a helicopter.

Every child has the right to education.
The best education is offered at school,
at home and in the community.
The government has to make sure that we go to school.

You look really nice. If you come with me,
I will give you some soap and money.
My family really needs this money…
But I think I would make a mistake.
Hey girl, you can always come to see me.
I will wait for you.
My dear, you were right to leave because it is not a solution for
you and your family. You have to finish school.
There are other ways to earn some money.
