COMPARISON /CONTRAST ESSAY – W RITING C&C

Differences? Must have some basic similarity between subjects

Two modes of transportation – airplane & railroad

No point in comparing two totally unrelated

subjects Computer to a piece of fruit

Make a list of all possible points of comparison and

contrast

Some similarities obvious and not worth writing about Choose most important, remember purpose

Be exceptionally careful with analogies, similes, and

metaphors

Don’t want point to seem forced

for other discovery techniques. Basic free writingfollows these guidelines:

Write nonstop for a set period of time (5 - 10

minutes).

Do not make corrections as you write. Keep writing, even if you have to write something

like, "I don't know what to write."

Write whatever comes into your mind.

FREEWRITING EXAMPLE

My ultimate favorite cartoon character hasalways been Scooby Doo. I was obseesed withhim as a child. My bedroom was evendecorated in Scooby Doo. He came on at 5o’clock which is when my dad got home fromwork. He recorded every single episode for

me. I still have all of the VCR tapes. It sucksthat I haven’t found a way to convert them toDVd. Other characters that I enjoyedwatching were the smurfs. I always hatedSmurfetts; she’s just stupid. I really liked

Captain Caveman but more or less just whenhe shouted. I couldn’t stand Sesame Street. Those characters puppets were just weirdand kind of scary.
