Delft Strenghts
Knowledge Base•Presence of diverse HEI’s (TU Delft, De Haagse Hogeschool, InHolland, UNESCO-IHE)•Concentration of high percentage of inhabitants with third level of education
Quality of life•Good quality of housing stock (specially strong presence of Student Housing Association)•Rich variety of cultural institution (13 museums, 20 art gallery, 2 large libraries, strong heritage and historical roots, 12 cultural festivals)•Available retail and leisure functions •Good quality of public space infrastructure
Accessibility•Good traffic system for public transport and car at regional, national and international level (strategic location close to highways and (inter)national railways and airports – Schipol / Rotterdam) •Good quality ICT infrastructure
Creating Knowledge•High Quality of HEIs’ output (R&D, Science, technology and innovation capacity)
Delft Opportunities
Economic Base•Presence of 5.503 companies from which 1.508 are Knowledge-intensive companies (27.4%)•Delft provides employment for 45.685 workers, from which 16.531 are knowledge workers (36,1%)•Diverse type of companies by segments and sizes
Urban diversity•Presence of inhabitants with foreign origins and level of education
Social Equity•Available job opportunities and workforce•Balanced social groups•Good perceived safety and security
•Attracting and retaining knowledge workers •Increasing joined strategies at city and regional levels•Relative guarantee of housing•Good opportunities for productivity and returns for talented groups
Applying knowledge and making new combinations•Relative synergy and collaboration between HEIs, industry and society in specific segments •Presence of incentive structures and incubator centers
Delft Weakness
Urban Scale•small city in relation with knowledge intensive activities within the Randstad
Delft Threats
Developing growth clusters •Weak cooperation atmosphere and communication lines between public parties, business and science community
Eindhoven success factors for knowledge economy (source: Leo van de Berg, 2008)
•positive atmosphere for cooperation between industry and knowledge institutions. (involvement of SMEs and Multinationals supporting regional economic development) spatial cluster in campus and change of name from “High Tech Campus Philips” to “High Tech Campus Eindhoven” •good internal networks: short communication lines •trust among stakeholders: encouragement of business sector•presence of stimulating programs and incubators centres (with regional and private funding) that had attracted research institutes such TNO and the development of infrastructure projects related with public transport•focus on regional market needs instead national level demand for technical labour market is higher in Eindhoven than the national average!•key factor in attracting knowledge workers is the good opportunities to find a job the presence of Philips as the largest employer (20.000 employees) and other large companies in the region such as OCÉ and DSM
Accordingly it is very important to map and visualise the linkages between the knowledge base of Delft and its economic base! the tables gives an idea of possible interaction among firms and knowledge institutions and their needs for proximity and shared space for scenarios.
