Dear readers,Imperial Life magazine is entering its third year and at this occasion I would like tofamiliarise you with several excellent new features that it brings. Not long ago, the CzechRepublic entered the Schengen area, and we have therefore prepared an overview for youof what new things this abolition of borders also brings for foreign tourists in the CzechRepublic. We have not forgotten about the inspirational offer of attractive trips for touristseither. Another new feature is the opening of a regular section about the history ofKarlovy Vary, which will be accompanied by unique historical photographs; we arecommencing with the famous Vřídel colonnade. A kind of hit reigning in the advertising industry is foodsupplements. Do they really have such a miraculous effect onour health as advertisements try to convince us of?

It is said about them that they:● increase the biological value of food, support the naturalability of the organism to protect itself against illnesses, andincrease resistance against stress. ● their effect is not immediate as is the case for medication, butit comes with more lasting regular use. They operate in theorganism in the long-term and our body becomes moreresistant thanks to them. ● several preparations can even be used at the same time orcombined preparations can be created from several curativeplants with the aim of achieving an increased effect on theorganism. Then there is talk of a strengthening of the effect orof a synergy effect. ● they support the effects of medication, eliminate theirnegative side-effects and thanks to them there can even bea reduction in the necessary doses of medication, or evenstopping of pharmacological treatment.

It is almost certain that: ● they are almost always natural substances or at leastnaturally identical, therefore not “artificial” or unnatural for theorganism or manifestly inorganic. ● substances used in food supplements are usually alsoprepared synthetically. Although it is said that syntheticsubstances are not effective, in such a case the opposite is true. ● there are practically no side effects from taking foodsupplements, and if they do occur then it is in totallyexceptional cases. Of course wecannot totally exclude the factthat someone may possibly beallergic to something.

What are food supplements?So far we have talked aboutwhat we can read on thepackaging of these preparationsor in various advertising articles.What should we know forcertain about food supplementsthough? Perhaps the fact thatthey are not drugs, althoughthey often look like they are,they are sold at pharmacies andat other places. In reality they are a special category of food.They are preparations intended for direct consumption andthey differ from food for usual consumption by their highcontents of vitamins, mineral substances or substances witha nutritional or physiological effect, and they therefore oftensupplement our usual diets positively. Their packaging mustnot label them as medication and must not indicate them ascuring or preventing diseases – that is reserved purely formedications. Beneficial effects on the health of the user can beshown though.

Borderline preparationsBesides this, so-called borderline preparations also exist, whichare more similar to medications, not only by their outer formsbut also by often containing the same substances. Thedifference usually lies in the doses used and the intendedmethod of use. They have ingredients practically similar as forfood supplements and medications (typically e.g. formultivitamins).

Что такое добавки к питанию? Пока что мы познакомились с информацией, которуюпишут на этикетках или в рекламных статьях. Что еще мыобязательно должны знать о добавках к питанию?Например, что это не лекарство, хотя часто так выглядит ипродается в аптеках и не только. На самом деле это спе-циальная категория продуктов питания. Готовые к упо-треблению добавки к питанию отличаются от обычнойеды высоким содержанием витаминов, минералов и пита-тельных веществ, дополняя наше питание. На упаковке недолжно содержаться показаний к применению, а так жеинформацию, о том, что добавка может способствоватьизлечению и профилактике заболевания. Положительныедействие на состояние здоровья указывать разрешено.

Смежные препаратыНаряду с этим существуют еще так называемые смежныепрепараты, которые, хотя и больше похожи на лекарства,причем не только внешним видом, но и тем, что содержатчасто одинаковые вещества. Разница, как правило, заключа-ется в дозировке и предполагаемом способе употребления.Мы увидим состав практически идентичный составу доба-вок к питанию и лекарств (типичный, например, для муль-тивитаминов).

Пищевые добавкиНе путайте добавки к питанию с так называемыми пище-выми добавками! Это всем хорошо известные вещества,которые могут быть в определенном соотношении во всехсъедобных продуктах, а также и в добавках к питанию. Это,например, витамины, минеральные вещества, аминокисло-ты или особые жирные кислоты. Именно их высокое содер-жание в добавках к питанию так положительно действуетна наш организм.

It is not the popular “thirteenth” Karlovy Varyspring, Becherovka, you have to buy that from a shop. It isthe twelve other ones – the Karlovy Vary thermo-mineralwater, which spouts from the Vřídlo, springs at colonnades,the beginnings of which you can find in the forests aroundKarlovy Vary or you can pour into a cup at the spa hotels ofthe Imperial company. That does not need advertisement, its“marketing” has already been working reliably for severalcenturies. So take the advertisements with a pinch of salt, butcome to Karlovy Vary!

In our body there is a constant conversion ofsubstances, during which energy is released and used up. Are you wine lovers? If you are then you should know that inJuly and August 2007 there was a significant change in thestrategy of the wine selection at all restaurants and hotel roomsat the Imperial Spa Hotel.

The founder of this enlightened idea is the managing directorof Hotel Imperial, Mr. Jiří Švařícek. He was one of the first inKarlovy Vary County to come up with the idea of raising usualgastronomy to gourmet gastronomy and of adapting the wineselection correspondingly too.

Every grape like it’s wrapped in cotton… What does this change amount to? Besides the expandedselection of types of wine and the increase in their quality. Allserved wine has to come from limited production, if possiblefrom smaller family wine producers that devote extraordinarycare to every individual grape from its emergence on the vinethrough to bottling and dispatch. Another criterion is thequality of the wine itself, which should attain at least thestandard of a kabinet, or correspond to such a wine rating byits character and taste.

Opera for your tastebuds What new things can we look forward to? Go and try them outyourselves for instance at Café Imperial. However,just like the opera this wine is outstanding in its kind, fresh andlight, and will play the most soothing tones in you with its tasteand aroma, reminiscent of spring fruit. Its balance and fullnesspredetermines it for consumption with a plentiful amount ofcafe foods. Due to the relatively low alcohol content of 12%,and due to the harmony of acids, sugars and tannins(substances evoking a feeling of sourness on the tongue), thePink Cavalier is a wine that will not only satisfy wine peoplebut undoubtedly also musical fine gourmets.

In the automobile sky another three superstars are shining inthe form of the exclusive Aston Martin DBS, the BentleyContinental GT Speed with an even six hundred horse powerand the devilish Lamborghini Reventón priced at 1 millioneuros. These cars are so exceptional that they deserve a moredetailed presentation.

Aston Martin DBSThe English predator, the DBS, is based on the DB9 model, butit has had several fundamental modifications making it a roadderivative of the racing special DBR9 and DBRS9. It isdifferentiated from the original model primarily by outerpanels and a carbon composite body kit, which saves up toa very valuable hundred kilograms. Lowered door-sills anda front spoiler with an enlarged radiator grille work togetherwith the rear diffuser to create a Venturi effect, which sucks theAston Martin DBS to the ground.

Under the exquisitely designed front hood we can find a six-litre twelve-cylinder with a credit worthy 517 horse power anda torque of 570 N.m. The engine power is transferred to the rearwheels by a six-phase automatic gear box. The Aston MartinDBS reaches a top speed of 302 km/h and goes from 0-

Bentley Continental GT SpeedThe English make's designers found inspiration for developingthe new version of the Continental GT in the golden age ofautomobiles. Therefore, Dirk van Braeckel had the task ofmaintaining the typical features of the successful model whendesigning the new version of the high-performance GT Speed.There have not been many changes then. The BentleyContinental GT Speed has a new bumper with wider inlets forcooling air, chrome frames around the headlights and darkchrome radiator grille. The sporty nature of the vehicle isfurther underlined by the wider edges of the exhaust pipes andthe twenty inch wheels, which can on request also be suppliedin a dark shade. The interior of the GT Speed model is based onthe Mulliner Driving Specification series. Customers cantherefore choose from sixteen standard shades of colour andseventeen colours for the interior.

Under the hood of the GT Speed model are still the old well-known V12 cylinders. In the top-of-the-range specifications, thesix-litre driving unit has a maximum performance of up to 449kW (610 k) though and a torque of 750 N.m (already availablefrom 1750 1/min). Compared to the standard specifications, theGT Speed also has decompressed piston shafts, for fasterresponse from the engine, new pistons resistant to higher

Good traction is ensured for this exclusive automobile bya central Torsen interaxle differential, which distributes thetorque of the engine to all wheels. The result is that the BentleyContinental GT Speed is the fastest car ever manufactured bythe company. It has a top speed of 322km/h and the largecoupe can go from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5s. The drivingexperience is further alsosupported by a modified chassiswith a strengthened brakingsystem and the latest generationof stabilisation system, whichallows the driver to slightly slidewhen driving out of a turn.

Lamborghini ReventónFirst impressions of the Italianinnovation give you the idea thatthe Lamborghini team ofdesigners has let itself beinspired by fighter planes indesigning this supercar. Fibreglass laminate was used (bonnetand trunk) along with composite materials to manufacture thebody. The rear lamps use LEDs, the front uses bi-xenons, andLEDs are designated for day and indicator lights. On the two-seater interior it can be seen that the donor of the elements isMurciélago, and the biggest new feature is the use of a newinstrument panel, which is similarly as in some aeroplanescomprised of three liquid crystal displays. An interestingelement that also comes from aeronautics is the overloadindicator. All of the car's wheels are driven by the 6.5 litre V12cylinder engine, originating from the top model MurciélagoLP640, which provides a performance of 471kW (640k) anda torque of 660 N.m. Just like that car, the Reventón alsoreaches a top speed of 340km/h and accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 3.4s. The exclusivity of the innovation is ensuredprimarily by the limited production series of a mere twentycars.

Ferrari 430 ScuderiaThis sporty innovation was originally going to be calledChallenge Stradale, but in the end its name is simpler. The curbweight of the Ferrari 430 Scuderia dropped by 100kg to 1,250kg.The 4.3 litre V8 engine has instead of 360kW (490k) up to375kW (510k) during 8500 1/min, therefore almost 119 horsepower per litre of displacement. The name gastroenterology will probably sound a bit weird tomany readers. Could you tell us what it covers? Gastroenterology is engaged in malfunctions of the digestivetract, its diagnostics, therapy and prevention. By the way, it isa field that has a tradition of over two hundred years in theCzech Republic. Of course, today's methods are far moreadvanced and quite different from those used in the past. Ofthe outstanding people of Czech gastroenterology who are stillalive we can name Zdeňek Mařatek, who opened the way forour gastroenterology to the international forum, and PřemyslFrič and Václav Jirásek.

You said malfunctions of the digestive system. Which are themost frequent? There is a whole series of illnesses, including such that mostpeople know as gastric ulcers and ulcer disease of theduodenum. However, we have been recording a slightreduction in these in past years, caused undoubtedly by betterquality investigative methods and their easy accessibility. They are also all types of jaundice and unfortunately alsoulcers.

Is there anything specific about your activity that you areworking in a spa town? It is understandably a connection with spa care, therefore inour case with the Karlovy Vary thermo-mineral springs anddrinking treatment, but my balneologist colleagues from theImperial spa company could tell you far more about that. Werecommend drinking treatment for all functional diseases andafter operations. The local mineral waters are outstandingparticularly in aiding to cure illnesses of the pancreas, liver andgallbladder and for chronic intestinal illnesses. During suchcomplications, a visit to the spa is appropriate every year for atleast three weeks. Also excellent are preventive diagnostic-treatment stays.

So what is the most effective prevention of these difficulties?We can prevent difficulties with the digestive system toa considerable extent by changing our unhealthy way of life.That includes relatively generally well-known things: notenough physical activity, a diet with a high fat content,smoking, excessive consumption of alcohol and obesity. By theway, and as my colleague has touched on, sufficient sleep alsocontributes to their prevention.

Это целый ряд заболеваний, включая те, которые большин-ству людей известны под названиями язва желудка и язвадвенадцатиперстной кишки. Но эти заболевания в после-дние годы фиксируются всё реже, что, без сомнения,является заслугой более качественных методов обследова-ния и доступности последних. Кроме того, это все разно-видности желтухи, и, к сожалению, опухоли.

То, что вы работаете в курортном городе, придает вашейработе дополнительную специфику? Этой спецификой, естественно, является тесная привязка ксанаторным возможностям, т.е. в нашем случае – к карло-варским термоминеральным источникам и питьевым кур-сам, но об этом вам гораздо лучше расскажут моиколлеги-бальнеологи из курортной компании Империал.Мы рекомендуем питьевой курс при любых функциональ-ных нарушениях и после операций. Местные минеральныеводы особенно полезны при лечении заболеваний поджелу-дочной железы, печени и желчного пузыря, а также прихронических заболеваниях кишечника. При наличии подо-бных осложнений рекомендуется ежегодное посещениекурорта при минимальной продолжительности каждогопосещения три недели. Но эффект имеют и однократныелечебно-профилактические визиты.

А какая самая действенная профилактика этих заболеваний? Проблем с пищеварительной системой можно избежать,если изменить нездоровый образ жизни. Разговор обобщеизвестных вещах: недостатке физической активности,потреблении продуктов питания с высоким содержаниемжира, курении, чрезмерном потреблении алкоголя и ожи-рении. Между прочим, это отмечают и мои коллеги, про-филактике этих заболеваний способствует и правильныйрежим сна.

With a traveller's excitement I go on the plane at Prague airportand I was curious what my meeting with Ukraine, a “remotelyclose” country, had in store for me…

A green metropolis Charles de Gaulle is supposed to have declared one day whenvisiting Kiev that he had seen a lot of parks in towns but nevera town in a park. I found out what the statesman was probablythinking about when I got out of the airport building. The smallcar park was flanked from three sides by fully grown chestnuttrees, which created pleasant shade in the stifling, swelteringheat. I got into a taxi and continued towards the centre of themetropolis. Even when driving out of the airport grounds thegreenery didn't thin out – on the contrary. The wide road wasflanked by parks, which in the distance merged into densergrowth and became lost in the foggy sweltering heat. With thedensity of traffic and increasing number of billboards it wasclear that we were approaching the city centre. The driverskilfully manoeuvred on a three-lane road, wildly gesticulatedand explained the pitfalls of the local traffic. We used to havea convoy of legendary „Gaz 69 standard-issue Warsaw Pactcars“, which in their military colours and with loudspeakers onthe roof invited passers-by to the renowned Chreščatikdiscotheque, which I later also visited. On the wide boulevardsmultitudes of people were walking around and in the hurtlingcar they blended into multicoloured snakes. It was not untilI got out of the car and looked around that I became aware ofhow everything here is spacious and majestic.

I stayed in a low-lying block of flats in the city centre, whichwith the other constructions and the ubiquitous greeneryformed a pleasant quarter, radiating a family-type ease. I hadonly permeated the bustle of the metropolis very little, butI was eager for the activity, so I quickly put down my bags andwent into the pulsating Kiev…

С воодушевлением путешественника я сел в самолет в праж-ском аэропорту «Рузине», с любопытством ожидая – какойокажется встреча с Украиной, страной «отдаленно-близкой».

Зеленая столица Говорят, Шарль де Голль при посещении Киева как-тозаметил, что он видел много парков в городах, но никогда –город в парке. Что имел в виду французский политик японял сразу, как только вышел из здания аэропорта.Небольшая стоянка была с трех сторон окружена рослымикаштанами, которые предоставляли приятную прохладу вдушную жару. Я сел в такси и направился в центр столицы.За территорией аэропорта зелени не убавилось, а наоборот.Широкое шоссе было окружено парками, которые ближе клинии горизонта перетекали в лесопарки и терялись втуманной духоте. По плотности потока машин и увеличе-нию числа биллбордов стало понятно: мы приближаемся кцентру города. Водитель ловко маневрировал на трехполос-ном шоссе, активно жестикулируя и описывая сложностиместного дорожного движения. Мы проехали колоннулегендарных «газиков», правда, без военной раскраски,которые посредством расположенных на крышах репродук-торов приглашали прохожих на популярную дискотекуКрещатик – её я впоследствии посетил. По широким буль-варам прогуливались толпы людей, которые выглядели изокна несущегося автомобиля как пестрые змеи. Толькокогда я вышел из машины и огляделся вокруг, то заметил,какое все вокруг просторное и величественное.

Я поселился в невысоком панельном доме в центре города,который вместе с остальными постройками и вездесущейзеленью формировали очень приятный квартал, излучаю-щий семейный уют. Шум столицы сюда почти не прони-кал, и я, жаждущий его, быстро скинул рюкзаки и вышелнавстречу пульсирующему Киеву...

Ukraine: “The Remote Relative” What does a person visualise if you say Ukraine? I asked mycolleagues and friends to find out. The answers I got weresurprisingly very similar. It seems that in the eyes of manyCzechs Ukraine is inseparably connected with being exotic in aspecial way: on one hand it represents “a rather remote”wilderness, transversely unbalanced by brown coal basins; onthe other hand Ukraine is connected with the notion of acourageous and resistant nation that evokes an affection for itand a feeling of “closeness”.

Украина: «Дальняя родственница»Что представляется человеку под словом Украина? Яспециально задавал этот вопрос своим друзьям и коллегами ответы были на удивление очень похожи. Кажется,Украина в глазах многих чехов неразрывно связана сэкзотикой особого типа. С другой,Украина связана с образом храброго и неуступчивогонарода, который вызывает симпатию и чувство «близости».

The forest of Kiev's golden roofs andtowers is picturesque by itself, but withthe help of nature it is so much morepicturesque…

Market as the “meeting point” It is said that all important matters are discussed at the pub – inKiev though the following applies: “We'll meet up and talk atthe square.” Wooden little huts are mutually connected, as ifthey were creating a town within a town. At one stall I amexchanging euros for Ukranian hryvnas, so that I canimmediately spend them at the next shop on the outstanding“borsch” and a pear brandy. They also have classic hamburgersand kebabs here, but a human does not live by food and drinkalone – you can get practically anything here. Besides this,I come across local residents here, who willingly get talkingand explain to me the shortest route to the renownedChreščatik boulevard.

Underground to “Longing“ station – sorry, T. Ševcenko stationThe Kiev underground (metro) is a feature unique in the worldin several respects. It leads along the surface and deep underthe ground – Arsenalna station is the deepest station in theworld, 107 metres under the surface; the longest escalators arehere too, branching out to all possible sides and seeming tohave no end. Every metro stop without exception has oldtourniquets, which devour your token and let you pass furtherinto the underground. It is fast and flowing. You drive deepunderground so that it in no time it emerges on the bridge overthe river Dnieper. It is really a view for the gods: the majesticriver winds through the city, moving from hill to valley andback again. Before I can take in the magnificence, a train goesinto the tunnel again. I can feel a chill and damp, whichindicates that we really are travelling in “the centre of theearth”.

I come out near Independence Square, which together withChreščatik boulevard represent the centre of the “new” town.

Деревянныеларьки, соединенные друг с другом, как бы образуютгород в городе. В одном ларьке я меняю евро на гривнычтобы сразу же потратить их в соседнем наизумительный борщ и грушевую самогонку. Продаютсяздесь и классические гамбургеры с кебабами. Но нехлебом единым жив человек – на киевском рынке можнонайти практически всё. Кроме того, я встретил здесьместных старожилов, которые охотно пускаются вразговор со мной и показывают мне самую короткуюдорогу к знаменитому бульвару Крещатик.

Метро до станции «Желание», пардон, Т. Шевченко... Киевское метро является уникальным по многимпоказателям. Оно проходит как по поверхности, так иглубоко под землей. К примеру, расположенная наглубине 107 метров станция «Арсенальная» являетсясамой глубоко расположенной станцией метро в мире. Асамые длинные в мире эскалаторы разбегаются вовсевозможные стороны и кажутся бесконечными…Неотделимы от станций метро и старенькие турникеты,которые проглотят жетон и впустят вас в подземелье.Отправление проходит быстро и плавно. Поезд въезжаетглубоко под землю, чтобы в следующий моментвынырнуть на мосту через реку Днепр. Этодействительно божественное зрелище: величественнаярека тянется через город, который перетекает с холмов вдолины и наоборот. This place really has a cosmopolitan character: I weave throughloads of people (there is some kind of demonstration going onhere), so that I can feel like I’m in the centre of a newpandemonium, this time “the purchasing of an eager crowd“,entwined shops of different sizes and a wide variety ofspecialisations. After a while I turn off the busy boulevard andget to the renowned Ševcenkopark, not named after thefootballer Andrei but aftera literary critic, dramatist,painter and writer called TarasŠevcenko. Other ways that showhow much Ukranians like himare that the university and anunderground stop are bothnamed after him. Taras himselfoverlooks his sheep in the parkfrom a stone stand. He hasa view here! Promenadingyoung people from the nearbyuniversity spontaneously showoff their graces. A long-hairedjuggler throws wooden skittlesinto the air, thus scoringimaginary points with the ladiespresent, who were invited herefor an afternoon siesta with a bottle of cooled soda water. Thereis a painter in some sort of costume, meditating about thediligently mown green – all of this is offered to you by anafternoon walk through the park.

After a tiring wander through the city, I sit down in the Czechyard, one of several Czech restaurants in Kiev. I have to admit

Night-time strolls It is getting dark and the contours of the city are becomingblurred. I am standing on the bank of the Dnieper and oppositeme a theme park is rumbling. I can hear music interrupted byhuman laughter. It reminds me a bit of the Rio carnival… wellso that you understand, in Kiev the banks of the river havebeen modified to be sandy beaches. They allegedly brought thesand here all the way from the Black Sea. So the atmospherehere is pretty happy too. There is singing, beer and vodka isbeing drunk, and people are enjoying the local speciality –dried, salted fish. The beaches are lit up in several places andtogether with the theme park they form the focus of the night’sfestivities. From here you can continue on to the alreadymentioned Chreščatik, basically to more local clubs and discos,where you can pleasantly socially get worn out or… meetsomeone.

Рядом я обнаружилкомплекс скульптур, которые изображают сцены боя вогромных размерах. Гигантские руки держат оружие, налицах отражается бульдожье стремление победитьпротивника – так выглядит Памятник жертвам ВторойМировой войны. И снова повсюду эта величественность и«гигантизм», которые и не поучают, и не возмущают, нешокируют, и не хвалятся. Они как будто бы принадлежатэтому городу с незапамятных времен. Киев большой ивеличественный и совершенного этого не стесняется.

Ukraine is located. Only in that way can you see how the sun’srays reflect off the golden domes of orthodox churches, ofwhich there are countless numbers in Kiev. Probably the mostwell-known orthodox building is Saint Sofia Cathedral, but byfar the most beautiful is the Kiev-Pečorská lávra. This uniquecloister, which is by the way recorded in the UNESCO heritagefund, stands on an extensive complex of underground cavesand passages, the most part of which is accessible to the public.And so I got a torch and like a monk from the old days I delvedinto the mysterious underground world. I wonder if I’ll findany treasure!

Captivated by the refinement of the underground labyrinth,I come out of the cathedral gates so that in a short while I cansettle my sight at the nearby gem, which rises to the heavens. Itis the statue of Rodin Mat´, representing a sort of a Ukranianequivalent of the Statue of Liberty. The likeness of a womanholding a shield and the upright sword symbolises “TheProtective Mother”, which in times of war watches over theUkrainian people. Right next to it I come across a complex ofstatues displaying fight scenes of a superhuman scale. Giant’shands clasping weapons, their faces reflecting a bulldog’sdetermination to win against the opponent – that is what theSecond World War Victim Memorial looks like. And againeverywhere there is majesty and “size”, which does not inciteor instruct, does not shock or boast; it is like it has alwaysbelonged to this city; Kiev is large and majestic and it is notashamed of it at all.

One of the architectonic pearls is undoubtedly“Michajlovskij” cloister; during the day it is reallylively here, but at night you won't meet a livingsoul here, he is said to haunt the golden domes…

FarewellAs I look out of the window of the aeroplane that just took offfrom Ukranian soil, a short mute film is playing in my head,capturing the three weeks in Kiev and its surroundings.I record it into my memory so that I can then play it to all thoseinterested when they ask me how I liked Kiev… And becauseI don't like goodbyes and the whole nostalgic drama that comeswith them, I am gradually falling asleep, tanned to a bronzecolour, with sand in my shoes and with the knowledge thatwords often just pass by and fly around in the air whilst life isbeing lived… And life in Kiev was good.

Отсюдаможно добраться на уже упоминавшийся Крещатик илиже наведаться в тамошние клубы и дискотеки, где естьвозможность расслабиться или завести приятноезнакомство…

ПрощаниеКогда я смотрю из окна самолета, который только чтооторвался от украинской земли, в голове у меня мелькаеткороткое немое кино, охватывающее три недели,проведённые в Киеве и окрестностях. Я сохраняю его усебя в памяти, чтобы потом показать его всемлюбопытствующим, кто будет интересоваться моимикиевскими впечатлениями. А поскольку я не люблюпрощаний и весь этот театр ностальгии, я потихонькузасыпаю… С бронзовым загаром, с песком в ботинках и сощущением того, что слова часто просто льются илетают в воздухе, в то время как жизнь осязается…

In SunGallery the lights do not fade away even with thecoming winter. From 27 October until the end of 2007 itsinteriors have lit up noteworthy artefacts of the Czechglassmaker Stanislav Müller.

The actual name of the collection, Transparent team, indicateswhat the creator was inspired by: the attractive world ofbusiness and the company environment. Transparent or clear isthe sheet glass from which individual sculptures originated,“transparent” or legal should be transactions that businessmenmake a living from, the main “heroes” of figural sculptures ofthis collection. The playfulness and wit therefore belongs to themain characteristics of the displays, which originated duringlast year.

Уже само название коллекции --«Транспарентная команда»,ассоциируется с бизнес-средой, где художник черпал вдох-новение.

Транспарентным или прозрачным является листовое сте-кло, из которого были созданы отдельные пластики, таки-ми же транспарентными или легальными должны быть исделки, которые заключают бизнесмены – главные героиэтой коллекции. Все экспонаты, созданные на протяжениипрошлого года, характеризуются игривостью и шутовством.

Фигурная пластика сделана уникальным методом гидро-абразивной резки, который соединяет изобразительноеискусство и высокие технологии. Из нарезного отшлифо-ванного стекла после его шлифовки и полировки припомощи склеивания создаются эффектные композиции.

of the range technology. The cut sheet glass is subsequentlysharpened and polished, and by adhesion is set up intoimpressive creative compositions.

With this collection, Stanislav Müller links to the line of hisprevious creation, in which figural sculptures playa fundamental role, and proves that he is one of the mostinteresting glass artists of this time. His all-round activities alsoaffirm this. Besides glass sculptures, Müller is also engaged inpainting, sculpting, theatrical art and performances. In hisprojects he is engaged in common themes and human relationsvia creative expression.

The exhibition at the SunGallery was initiated by the director ofthe “Sanssouci a Švýcarský dvůr” Spa complex Robert Jahn andthe curator of the exhibition Jaroslav Polanecký from the facultyof utility art and design in Ústí nad Labem. Hotel Sanssoucicontinues it in a line of displays aimed at the presentation ofmodern artistic glass of Czech creators.

It used to be the most beautiful and mostmonumental Karlovy Vary colonnade. The only thingsremaining of its fame are memories and a unique setof photographs, some of which you can see on thesepages/this website. Let's delve for a while into the pastand let us revive in front of our eyes the former blackand white historical pictures now in glossy colour.

Firstly though we should tell ourselves why colonnades werebuilt and are being built at all. These special buildings actuallycame into being due to need. During adverse weather it makesno difference if you are being heated by thermo-mineral water,especially if according to specialists' instructions you aresupposed to drink the water in slow sips and enjoy it in peace.The spa public needed the extensive roofed area of thecolonnades for their promenades.

Firstly though, only small wooden covers (pavillions andgazebos) were built above individual curative springs. During

the time of large development of spa towns, these modest littlestructures were not sufficient for the numerous spa guests, socolonnades started to be built. And in 1797 the first colonnadealso in Karlovy Vary was built at the Karlovy Vary Vřídlo atthe site of the Baroque Vřídlo spas.

Karlovy Vary colonnadeThis was built in an Imperial style, it was spread out into a tri-nave area, and because the word colonnade originates from theFrench word colonnade, meaning peristyle, is was supportedby sets of Tuscan columns. It was covered by a saddle, shingleroof, which was crowned above the fountain of Vřidlo with atwo-level terrace blind with openings to let out hot steam. ThisVřídel colonnade served the visitors to Karlovy Vary for awhole 81 years, and in 1878 it was taken down.

Revived picturesThe Karlovy Vary councillors decided to give the town aconstruction that will worthily represent the most significantKarlovy Vary spring – Vřídlo. They hired the famous Viennesearchitects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer, whodesigned a structure embodying the spirit of the period:monumental, technically progressive and elegant at the sametime. Judge for yourselves:

● The start of the construction and the first groundwork dateback to 1 October 1878. The actual assembly of the collection offive structural parts of the Vřídlo colonnade began on 1 February 1879 and ended on 27 April of the same year. ● The hall of the Hygie spring, one of the springs of the Vřídlo,15x15 metres in size, a connecting court that could be walkedthrough, which led from the Market to the Church of St. MaryMagdalene.

The Karlovy Vary councillorsdecided to give the towna construction that will worthilyrepresent the most significantKarlovy Vary spring – Vřídlo.

● The Vřídlo hall was spread out on the same area as theHygie hall. ● The biggest and longest was the promenade hall, whichmeasured fifty metres. The total length of the collection of fiveconstructions exceeded one hundred metres. ● In three months, workers put together hundreds of cast-ironand steel sections weighing 3,000 tons. Subsequently over1,400 square metres of copper sheeting was laid on the roof. ● The entry portals had the finishing touches put to them withbronze statues of the winged goddess Nike, the right hand ofwhich was lifting the winners’ crown. ● Above the Vřídlo and the hall of the Hygie spring, thecolonnade was crowned by two cylindrical towers withgrandiose domes.

The imposing new construction of the Vřídlo colonnade had itscelebratory opening when the spa season commenced on 1

This magnificent structure, which was engraved intothe memory of hundreds of thousands of visitors to the spas,was however barbarically demolished after sixty years, or aswas said at the time, “disassembled”: from the beginning ofJanuary until the end of March 1939 giant bronze chandeliers,statues and sculptures gradually went missing frommetallurgical works of armament firms, as well as copper sheetsfrom roofs, steel supports and decorative cast-iron colonnades.For more than sixty years chandeliers attested for the steps ofladies and statues patronisingly nodded to spa men, now theyhave become tools for killing. A pretext for demolition wasfound. Allegedly the iron connectors that held the dome abovethe Vřídlo were corroded… What touching care about the safetyof the patients… and just a mere couple of weeks before theoutbreak of the greatest massacre in human history…

The war ended, the colonnade that protected against adverseweather did not outlive the adversity of the period. Vřídlo, thetrue heart of Karlovy Vary, still spouts with undiminishedpower as before though. During your imaginary walk throughhistory may you be accompanied by only what is beautifulfrom the past, which was not at all black and white!

Война закончилась… Колоннада, которая защищала людейот ненастий, сама их не пережила. Источник Вржидло,настоящее сердце Карловых Вар, несмотря ни на что, бьётиз-под земли с прежней силой. Пусть этот экскурс в историюзапомнится Вам только хорошим, несмотря на то, что он небыл всё же черно-белым.

To the other side of the mountainsThanks to the Czech Republic's entry into Schengen, it is nowopening up new possibilities for visitors to go on trips “toEurope”. Let's at least take a look a little bit past the backyard,after all Germany is a stone's throw away from here.

One of the most beautiful recreational trips can be to theneighbouring German state of Bavaria to the springs of theriver Eger, which flows through Karlovy Vary, forms the axis ofthe entire local region and gave the name not only to it(Egrensis), but also to the largest border town of Cheb, the

The Czech Republic entered the Schengen area at midnight onthe night of 20th December 2007. Since that moment, citizenshave been able to freely travel within the area of the 24

countries among which internal land borders ceased to exist. Forcitizens of Schengen area member countries and for people from other countries that

arrive in a Schengen country a number of common benefits follow from this:

German name of which is Eger. The Eger springs in theFichtelgebirge (Smrčiny) mountain range, at the hillside ofSchneeberg mountain at a height of 752 above sea level. A tripto these places therefore offers a charming walk through thepeaceful mountains with dense, very well-preserved forests.The trip can be extended to the Bavarian metropolis ofMünchen(Munich), which despite having more than onemillion residents, has a very welcoming effect. The symbol ofthe city is the Frauenkirche church dating back to the 15thcentury. Also worth a visit is the Olympic village, built for thesummer Olympic games that took place here in 1972. You canfind it easily, it lies under the no less famous and strikingtelevision tower with a revolving restaurant at the dome and,by the way, with outstanding cuisine. Bavaria can boast ofexcellent food, particularly smoked meats and sweet pastries.The market at Marienplatz and in its surroundings invitevisitors to never-ending tasting of the local specialities and alsoto purchases of the craft products from the local region.Munchen was the main venue for the Football World Cup in2006.

By mountain train to the silver veinA slightly closer neighbour of the Egrensis region is Sachsen(Saxony). A mountain railway called Krušnohorský simeringleads to it from Karlovy Vary. In 1989 it still ended at theborder town of Potůčky. Now you can ride on it all the wayto the opposite Johanngeorgenstadt founded in 1654 by Czechminers of the Protestant faith. Today among other thingsthere is a prominent winter sports centre there with well-known ski jumps, but the town also became one of the firstborder shopping centres in the region after the fall of the ironcurtain.

On the German side of the Ore mountains in the Middle Agesthe Silver route went between Saxony and the Czech lands.Dresden, the capital of Saxony, lies at its north-eastern end.This historic settlement on the Elbe is distinguished by unusualBaroque architecture. It is considered as being one of the mostbeautiful European towns and when viewing the Lutheranchurch called Frauenkirche you will understand why it is calledthe Florence of the north. To this day, Dresden has been one ofthe most significant industrial and commercial centres not onlyof the German state of Sachsen (Saxony) but also of the wholeof Germany, because after long decades Dresden has createda connection between Germany, Sorbia and the Czech lands.

A similarly prominent place in this part of Germany is taken upby Leipzig. On the opposite south-western end of the Silver route lies thetown of Zwickau at the foot of the Ore mountains. In recenthistory it became famous particularly by the automotiveindustry. The Middle Ages Silver route, which was an inspiration for usto make trips to the Czech-German border, which no longerexists, was renewed this year thanks to finances from theEuropean Fund for cross-border co-operation. It measuresa total of 140km and leads via the German border towns ofSchneeberg, Aue, Annaberg-Buchholz, Ehrenfriedersdorf,Wolkenstein, Marienberg, Lengefeld, Brand-Erbisdorf andFreiberg. In each of these memorable towns we can see besidesexamples of local traditional folk crafts also many historicalsites and places of interest.

Even the silver vein can become exhausted. It happened to thelocal one around 1600. Miners had to find themselvesa different way to make a living. They took a chance on thetextile industry and in that way caused the prosperity ofChemnitz, the third largest town in Saxony. Produced therewere not only the softest stockings in Europe but also excellenttextile machinery. In the 19th century the town had thenickname of the German Manchester. In 1951 to 1990 it wascalled Karl-Marx-Stadt. That was not a nickname, it was theofficial name chosen for it by the government of the pro-SovietEast Germany of the time. A statue of the founder of the labourmovement, Karl Marx, stands in the town to this day asa historical artefact. Chemnitz has also been and still is the mostsignificant German centre for textiles and apparel.
