Christmas Blessings from Nairobi!

Tonight there will be singing anddancing in the churches of Nairobi, ifnot in the refuse-laden paths andbyways. Signs of Christmas Eve arefew and far between, but believersknow, and their hopes come aliveonce again, on this holy night. A childis born and parents and siblingsrejoice. They bring no gold or gifts, only love-filled hearts, generousprayers, and welcoming hands. Onenewborn baby among so many chil-dren - so many poor brothers and sis-ters. But there is always a place forhim in the hovels of the poor.

As we celebrate tonight andtomorrow at Holy Cross Church herein Dandora - a vast colony of poor onthe eastern edge of the city of Nairobi- we acknowledge Jesus' coming andwelcome him with joy! Struggling fam-ilies, young widows, orphaned chil-dren brought by tired grandparents, teenagers wondering what life has instore for them - we all come to heargood news! We who have heard itover many years, on manyChristmases, need to hear it again. And so many are still wondering if itwill bring them courage and joy and afuture with more hope.

I arrived just four nights ago inKenya, out of the cold and ice of theIndiana. I crammed my first-classbody into a coach seat and tried tosleep, from Detroit to Amsterdam andthen on to Nairobi. We landed at 8:30in the evening, in the warm dry air ofthis high plateau in East Africa, east ofthe Great Rift Valley. Kenya is twicethe size of Nevada, with some similardesert-like features, minus the casi-nos and neon lights of Reno and LasVegas. Nairobi is a sprawling city, onthe verge of modernity, if the slums donot overwhelm it. Kenya had a goodstart in nationhood, gaining independ-ence in 1963, followed by some rockyyears as well. Now politics are againturbulent here, with the president

under pressure for not fulfilling hispromises of three years ago, and fer-ment among his party and supporters.Shortages of food and water and star-vation in large parts of the country willbring even more ferment no doubt.

Probably 10% of the 33 millionKenyans live in Nairobi. The medianage is around 18. Perhaps 80% areChristians (33% Catholics). And as inall developing world cities, one cannothelp wonder where they all stay atnight! During they day they all seemvery visible, filling the dusty andmuddy roads, walking everywhere, carrying in human loads, pushing bro-ken vehicles and carts, and demon-strating human industry and ingenuitythat seldom provides them enoughdaily income to eat a decent meal. But at night it seems they are taken upsomewhere into the rumbling bowelsof the city, to rest for another day.Slums stretch as far as the eye cansee, on the eastern edge (Dandora),southern (Huruma and Kibera) andothers are hidden behind the first-world facades of downtown.

Indeed, the noises, humansounds, smells, and mechanizedgroanings of vehicles are not muchdifferent anywhere in our urban world. These have an African flavor, ofcourse, colored by the wide variety ofskin tones and tribal features of manynative groups, refugees from war-tornneighboring nations, and people whohave come from afar - mostly Asia andthe Middle East -- generations ago. They are very welcoming, joyous, always smiling, ever trying to meetand greet you - How-are-you-I-am-fine! They are tall and thin, limberand filled with life. How well we knowof their successes at every USAmarathon race! Sadly, however, themajority of the poor are thin becausethey are hungry, and life is ebbingaway for so many who are living withHIV/AIDS.

Our Holy Cross community cameto Kenya from Uganda about 25 yearsago. The parish we began has grownlike the slum where it is planted -

Phase 1, Phase 2, up to Phase 5 orso. The original church is still used asa "mission" and desperately needsexpansion. The main church can"seat or stand" about 2000. It is sur-rounded by spacious grounds andmany buildings - Brother AndreDispensary, St. James PrimarySchool, a large nursery school, creditunion, youth centre, meetings rooms, and convent. Future dreams call for aparish house as well as expandedschool and office space. At presentthe parish priests and brother whodirects the dispensary live a mile downthe road in a small building. The orig-inal parish house, some miles away, long ago was turned into another dis-pensary and now a VCT (voluntarycounseling testing) centre, to handlethe many sick patients who come fromthe surrounding slums.

Brother John Bailanda, whodirects the dispensary and heads thecommunity, is a Ugandan, full of lifeand enthusiasm. He met me Tuesdaynight at the Nairobi airport and tookme home. So wonderful to see himagain, along with Stephen Merjavy, recent Notre Dame graduate just fin-ishing 18 months of volunteer servicewith our mission in Uganda who wasleaving for home that same night. Then another of those "airport-to-home" runs that I am so familiar with inmy travels around the world, with themind-boggling twists and turns fromthe airport, slinking in between thenight truck traffic, negotiating spikedblockades and almost-insurmountablespeed bumps in the road! We madeit, and I was greeted at "Holy Cross-Dandora" by Fathers AndrewMassawe (Tanzanian) and SimonMwangi (Kenyan) and our seminarianfrom Chile, Simon Cerda, who is doinga pastoral year at the parish. Truly aninternational house!

I am used to street noises all nightlong, so nothing surprises me! But Iwas warned not to touch one switchon my wall - which is the securityswitch and would bring the local ATSsecurity police if tripped! I slept

soundly and long - with few interrup-tions, and no Notre Dame geese toquack me awake! Negotiating themosquito net is always a challenge, but somehow I did it!

The bright Eastern sun woke meearly and the heat of the day hap-pened quickly. Simon Mwangi tookme on a tour of the original clinic, parish house, church, and main com-pound that afternoon, giving me thehistory along with the hopes for HolyCross and its ministry here among thepeople of Dandora. The most famouslandmark of Dandora is an immensegarbage dump! Through the smoke orburning refuse one can see a 60-seatsoccer stadium in the distance. Manychildren and adults roam the moundsof garbage, picking rags and plastic, bottles, and anything salvageable. Itis a hopeless task, leading so many todrug use, glue sniffing, and earlydeath. Programs have been started to"rehabilitate" them, but it is a difficultand frustrating task. Their name isLegion!

Late Wednesday afternoon, withthe bright setting sun filtering into thechurch, we celebrated Mass for alarge crowd of daily churchgoers. Itried to follow the Mass prayers, andwith a few pronunciation lessons, Isuspect I could do it! Certainly thefamiliar Roman script is more con-ducive to quick learning than theSanskrit languages of India!Spontaneous songs and harmonieslivened up the liturgy and touched theheart.

At the end, I spoke briefly andaccepted their welcome. I told of myjoy at sharing this Christmas weekwith them. And told how my "boss"Father Tom Smith had insisted that Ido this! Fr. Tom had built their church10 years ago, so naturally he wasgreeted - from a long distance - withmuch loving applause. Tom and Ihave worked together these last fiveyears at the Holy Cross MissionCenter at Notre Dame. Over the 35years that he has been assigned inand out of East Africa, he has workedin all three countries - Uganda, Kenyaand Tanzania. Now once again he isin "exile" in the USA.

Thursday morning I celebrated thecommunity Mass in our own chapel.Three of the local Sisters who work at

the parish joined us. I did venture out-side a few times, into the heat anddust of the day, chatting with thenumerous children passing by. Pushcarts with jerry cans of water wentback and forth from a distant villagedown the road, into the slums behindus. Buses careened down the road infront, trying to avoid the potholes andpuddles and speed bumps. Sitting inthe back of a bus would be extremelypainful I concluded! With FatherAndrew, the pastor, I toured the com-pound more extensively, and assistedhim with Christmas confessionsThursday afternoon. The sign "con-fessions in English only" on my door, was obeyed for the most part, but forthose who could not read, it meant lit-tle. But God DOES understandSwahili, so there was no problem.

Brother John took me to down-town Nairobi on Friday. As the citytraffic intensified, it was easy to seewhy trips to "the city" have to be care-fully planned and timed! We pulledinto the cathedral parking area andwhile he went to the bank I exploredthe large, very simple concrete struc-ture of Holy Family Basilica.Parishioners were washing everythingand preparing for the celebrations. Ichatted with two Indian nuns fromApostolic Carmel, who had been min-istering in Kenya for many years.Numerous religious communities fromaround the world continue to workhere, often drawing many vocations totheir congregations. Then I wanderedinto the large Catholic Bookstore, amazed to see so many familiar titlesfrom my Ave Maria Press days, includ-ing a number of current publications.

John and I drove on to ourMcCauley House of Formation insouthwestern Nairobi, where about 20Holy Cross seminarians and brotherslive and study at nearby TangazaCollege after completing their novitiateyear in Uganda. Our simple, pleasantsurroundings overlook the huge andinfamous Kibera slum which sprawlsacross many miles of hillside. BrotherCleophas supervises this house andalong with Father Willy Lukati guidesthese young members of the commu-nity in their studies and apostolicexperiences - some of which takeplace in the Kibera slum. A number ofreligious communities have located in

this area to take advantage of theproximity of Catholic higher education-al institutions nearby.

Brother Cleo had gathered agroup of women he works with; nineout of the 13 were present to greet meand share their stories with me. Theycall themselves: Kibera Women LivingPositively with HIV/AIDS. And positivethey are indeed! Each spoke of herstruggle, some for many years sincediagnosis; how they raised their chil-dren (some as single or widowedmothers) and lived for the future. Itwas so evident how their faith andsupport of one another have helpedthem to "Have No Fear" - as their T-shirts boldly proclaimed. Can't getmuch more gospel-based than that! They work together to make and sellsimple beadwork handicrafts to pro-vide a little income. They try to sharetheir stories to help other women likethemselves to gain strength to facetheir futures by "living positively." Butthe stigma of HIV/AIDS is only slowlyovercome, even in the church andparish communities. The courage ofthese women will help a lot!

Brother Albert Rutayisire, fromRwanda, now studying in the USA,had just arrived for a return visit toMcCauley House where he had spentseveral years in exile after the geno-cide in Rwanda - in which five HolyCross Brothers were killed. He joinedBrothers John and Cleo, Willy andmyself, at a park nearby (actuallybilled as a Crocodile and Ostrich farm- I saw neither) where we had lunchunder a tent, sharing our Holy Crossstories. The day passed too quicklyand John had to get me back to theparish to help Father Andrew withmore confessions. Then we celebrat-ed Mass for the growing crowd in theevening sun. So many interesting andgracious people approached to greetme, request special blessings andprayers, and ask about their belovedHoly Cross fathers and brothers whohad preceded me. Parents like thewidow Elizabeth, so worried about herson and is use of drugs and alcohol;students like young Kennedy who suc-cessfully completed his secondaryeducation and now longs to attend theuniversity to study history; a stream ofbeautiful people whose welcome wasso heartwarming.

Saturday morning Father Simonand I drove over to the main house ofthe Missionaries of Charity in Kenya,in Huruma, another very poor sectionof the city. As the piles of garbagedeepened, and the chuckholes androcks in the road increased, we finallyreached their welcome gate andentered a bit of paradise. The Sistershave managed to create oases ofpeace and joy in the midst of theworld's worst miseries! This was the65th home of the Missionaries aroundthe world that I have visited. I haveabout 700 to go however! Here theynot only care for huge numbers ofcrippled (mentally and physically) chil-dren and adults, but also many aban-doned, malnourished, and orphanedchildren of all ages. They employ ded-icated women from the surroundingslums to assist them. The children arewell cared for and much loved, inimmaculate cleanliness and the odorof sanctity! It is also the location oftheir postulancy and novitiate forAfrica, so many young aspiring Sistershave come to carry out their lovingservice for the poor and learn the spir-it of this amazing community ofSisters. One newly professed of twoweeks, with a broad smile, told of herassignment to Mexico as soon as her

visa arrives! She awaits the nextadventure of her young life with grati-tude and joy - Have no fear!

I'll have to warn Simon however! He was much impressed and offeredto celebrate Mass for the Sisters whenthey need him. That could turn outmore often and on shorter notice thanhe can imagine! Those of us moreexperienced with the MCs know thatonce they have your number, you areone of them!

This afternoon as I jot down thesethoughts, I am wondering what theevening celebrations will be like.Simon mentioned how different it ishere from Chile, with so few signs ofChristmas. There is certainly none ofthe fanfare that we are used to: I'veseen no Santa Clauses, no Christmasdecorations, heard few carols, andcertainly seen no shopping rush. Andno snow, no lights, no reindeer!Perhaps in downtown Nairobi it is dif-ferent, but here in the slums it is moresubdued, more normal, the birth ofanother child, another mouth to feed, another soul to love. And somehowthese people - Catholics andProtestants, Hindus and Muslims, andnonbelievers too - will manage it.Have no fear!

Now I head to Holy Cross Church

for the evening vigil at 6:30 pm, a sen-sible time! Though I am told it lastsmany hours! I'll let you know before Isend this off tonight.

Postscript: The celebration lastedless than three hours and the singingseldom stopped: chants and har-monies, punctuated by loud shouts ofjoy ("ululations"). A group of youngpeople gave a wonderful drama of theChristmas gospel - actually coveringmost of salvation history up to thearrival of the wise men! Especiallymoving were the scenes of the "regis-tration" of the poor in Bethlehem andthe travail of Mary, supported byJoseph, about to give birth. Aroundthe manger in front of the stable theshepherds and magi took turns hold-ing up the baby Jesus for all to see.Of course it was a rather large andvery white doll, but the message wasclear! Father Simon's moving sermonbrought home the good news of thenight. As the singing and swayingwent on, the ululations became morefrequent and many in the crowdanswered. I said a few words at theend, promising to be able to pray withthem in Swahili on my next visit.Another language to learn!
