Thomas Schütte /Robbrecht en DaemHet Huis

Het nieuwe paviljoen van het Antwerpse beeldenpark Middelheim herbergt een reeks keramische sculpturen van de Duitse topkunstenaar Thomas Schütte. De beelden kwamen er op nadrukkelijke vraag van de Gentse architecten Robbrecht en Daem, die de architectuur van het halfopen paviljoen uittekenden en het met de naam Het Huis bedachten. Dit boek vertelt het verhaal van de unieke samenwerking tussen het beeldenpark, de archi-tecten en de kunstenaar. De fragiele sculpturen van Thomas Schütte sluiten naadloos aan bij de aard en de geest van de architectuur, die speciaal ontworpen is om bescherming en omhulling te bieden aan kwetsbare kunst.

The new pavilion in the Middelheim sculpture park in Antwerp houses a series of ceramic sculptures by the leading German artist Thomas Schütte. The architecture of the half-open pavilion is by the Ghent architects Robbrecht en Daem — they named it The House. This book tells the story of the unique collaboration between the sculpture park, the architects and the artist. Thomas Schütte’s fragile sculptures are a perfect fit for the nature and spirit of the architecture, which has been designed especially to cast a protective veil over vulnerable art.

Newtopia: de staatvan de mensenrechten

Onder impuls van de gerenommeerde curatoren Katerina Gregos en Elena Sorokina wordt de thematiek van de mensenrechten niet alleen filosofisch en ethisch onder-zocht, maar ook gekoppeld aan het werk van zeventig internationale hedendaagse kunstenaars. Hun werk wordt in het najaar 2012 getoond op negen verschillende locaties in de binnenstad van Mechelen. In de catalogus vormen de geselecteerde werken een afzonderlijk geheel, waaruit duidelijk blijkt hoezeer de problematiek van de mensen-rechten ook binnen het domein van de beeldende kunst een weerkerend thema vormt. De publicatie omtrent dit bijzonder ambitieuze project wil echter meer zijn dan een tentoonstellingscatalogus. In het eerste deel wordt een stand van zaken opgemaakt van de mensenrechten aan de hand van essays en filosofi-sche beschouwingen. Vervolgens worden enkele internatio-nale voorvechters van de mensenrechten aan het woord gelaten. Aangrijpende getuigenissen en historische recon-structies wisselen elkaar af met sociaal-politieke analyses of nieuwe inzichten. Een ambitieus en optimistisch boek over misschien wel het allerbelangrijkste mondiale thema.

Katerina Gregos is kunsthistorica, curator en auteur. Ze was medecurator voor Manifesta 9, de Europese Biënnale voor Hedendaagse Kunst. Elena Sorokina is kunsthistorica, curator en alumna van het Whitney Museum in New York.

Gepubliceerd naar aanleiding van de gelijknamige tentoon-stelling te Mechelen (1 september–10 december 2012). Tentoonstellingsparcours langs negen locaties in de binnen-stad, met werk van onder meer Kendell Geers, Alfredo Jaar en Ziyah Gafic.

At the instigation of the curators Katerina Gregos and Elena Sorokina, the question of human rights is not only exami-ned from a philosophical and ethical point of view, but is also linked to the work of seventy international contempo-rary artists. Their work will be shown on nine different loca-tions in the inner city of Mechelen in the fall of 2012. In the catalogue the selected works constitute a corpus, which clearly shows to what extent the question of human rights is also a recurrent theme within the field of art. However, the publication on this particularly ambitious project aims to be more than just an exhibition catalogue. The current situation of human rights is charted in the first part on the basis of essays and philosophical reflections. This is followed by contributions of several international human rights activists. Gripping testimonies and historical reconstructions alternate with socio-political analyses or new insights. It is an ambitious and optimistic book about what may well be the most important universal theme of all.

Katerina Gregos is an art historian, curator and writer. She was one of the curators of Manifesta 9, the European Biennial of Contemporary Art. Elena Sorokina is an art historian, curator and graduate of the Whitney Museum in New York.

The result is a book which will ease the senses, preceded by the artist’s poem Bijt de vis? [Is the fish biting?], and followed by a delightful story by film director Marc Didden, who uses a piece of French art and film history to cheerfully expatiate on both Jan Vanriet and the Renoir family. Het onvoltooideschilderij

Het is menselijk om datgene wat men begon ook te voltooien. Dat komt omdat men het onafgewerkte ervaart als gebrekkig. Die waarneming is zeker ook van toepas-sing op de schilderkunst, hoewel ze reeds door Plinius de Oude werd gerelativeerd: hij schatte sommige onvoltooide werken hoger in dan voltooide. Nico Van Hout, conserva-tor 17e-eeuwse schilderkunst van het Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerpen en co-auteur van o.a. het Corpus Rubenianum, wijdde een diepgaande studie aan het fenomeen. Hij ging bij oude en moderne meesters van de 15e tot de 20e eeuw op zoek naar onvoltooid werk, en vooral naar de reden erachter. Ging het om ziekte, overlijden, onenig-heid met de opdrachtgever of ontevredenheid over het artistieke resultaat? Aan de hand van vijftig onafgewerkte doeken belicht de auteur een weinig bekend onderdeel van de geschiedenis van de schilderkunst. Bovendien toont hij aan hoe het onvoltooide uit het verleden vele avant-gardes heeft beïnvloed, gaande van kubisme en expressionisme tot abstracte kunst. Alle avant-gardekunstenaars waren begeesterd door het ruwe, ongepolijste, achtergebleven idee. Het onvoltooide schilderij biedt een bijzondere blik op het verleden. It is in our nature to complete what we have begun. This is because we experience what is unfinished as lacking some-thing. This perception certainly applies to painting as well, although Pliny the Elder already called it into question in rating some unfinished works higher than completed ones. Nico Van Hout, conservator of 17th-century painting at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp and co-author of the Corpus Rubenianum and other works, has devoted an in-depth study to the phenomenon. He set out to find unfinished work among old and modern masters from the 15th to the 20th century, and above all underlying reason. Was it due to illness, death, disagreement with the patron or lack of satisfaction with the artistic result? On the basis of fifty unfinished paintings, the author throws light on a little-known aspect of the history of painting. Moreover, he shows how the unfinished work of the past has influenced many avant-gardes, from Cubism and Expressionism to Abstract Art. They were all inspired by the crude, unpolished, abandoned idea. This book examines the past from an unusual vantage point.

Sinds 1994 is de vermaarde David Zwirner Gallery in New York de uitvalsbasis van Luc Tuymans. Hij ging bij het begin van zijn carrière het engagement aan om er tweejaar-lijks een nieuwe reeks werken te tonen — een engagement dat hij vandaag, achttien jaar later, nog steeds nakomt. Intussen verwierf de kunstenaar internationale faam met zijn schilderijen, waarvan de gedempte stijl gecombi-neerd met een geladen inhoud steeds opnieuw voor bijval en ophef zorgen. The famous David Zwirner Gallery in New York has been the operating base of Luc Tuymans ever since 1994. At the start of his career he committed himself to showing a new series of works there once every two years — a promise that he has never failed to keep down to the present, eighteen years on. In the meantime the artist has achieved international fame with his paintings, of which the tempered style combi-ned with an often political content time and again have won acclaim and caused a stir. His thematic exhibitions in the Zwirner Gallery have tackled controversial topics, ranging from the Holocaust and 9/11 to the Belgian colonial past and the hypocrisy of the Disney empire. This book presents the major works of the artist together with brief commentary and supplemented with photographs and period documents. Tijdens de middeleeuwen ontwikkelt zich in Utrecht — toen het belangrijkste centrum van de Noordelijke Nederlanden — een bloeiende kunstproductie, met name die van de beeldhouwkunst. Niet alleen de aanwezigheid van kapitaalkrachtige geestelijken en een invloedrijke adel werken deze ontwikkeling in de hand, maar vooral ook de langdurige bouw van de imposante Domkerk. Talrijke beeldhouwers, onder wie Adriaen van Wesel en Jan van Schayck, werkten jarenlang mee aan het gigantische bouw-project dat rijkelijk voorzien moest worden van religieu-ze symbolen, friezen, grafzerken en memorietafels. De Utrechtse beeldhouwers bekwamen zich in het bewerken van steen zowel als hout, en bouwen gaandeweg een reputatie op die tot vandaag overeind blijft. De geïllustreerde catalogus over dit middeleeuwse fenomeen verschijnt naar aanleiding van de gelijknamige tentoonstelling in het Catharijneconvent in Utrecht. De auteurs tonen met verve het cultuurhistorische belang aan van de Domstad voor de ontwikkeling van de middeleeuw-se beeldhouwkunst in de Lage Landen en de Rijnstreek.

During the Middle Ages, a lively production of art, especially sculptures, developed in Utrecht, which was the most important centre in the Northern Netherlands at the time. This development was encouraged not only by the presence of well-to-do clergy and an influential nobility, but above also by the long construction period of the impressive Dome. Numerous sculptors, including Adriaen van Wesel and Jan van Schayck, worked for years on this gigantic building project that had to be richly decorated with religious sym-bols, friezes, tombstones and commemorative paintings and sculptures. The Utrecht sculptors skilled themselves in working in stone or wood and gradually built up a reputa-tion that they have maintained to this day. The illustrated catalogue on this medieval phenomenon is published in connection with an exhibition of the same title in the Catharijneconvent museum, Utrecht. In their lively accounts, the authors demonstrate the cultural historical importance of the city of the Dome for the development of medieval sculpture in the Lowlands and the Rhinelands.

Who cannot remember the animation film series Maya the Bee, which was so popular in the late 1970s, not only in Belgium and the Netherlands, but also in France, Germany and Japan? The series was based on the book of the same title, written in 1912 by the German children’s book author Waldemar Bonsels.
