Wireless equipment manufacturers worldwide are stepping up their development programs to

support the large growth of LTE deployments. AdvancedTCA platforms have been

acknowledged as the platform of choice for large Evolved Packet Core (EPC) systems targetingtier-one and tier-two service providers.

Standards-based platforms allow manufacturers fast time-to-market development cycles, withmuch lower development costs and lifecycle maintenance. Manufactures are now focused on

smaller systems geared toward tier-three service providers, public safety and military

    communications.

    PT offers1U and 8U MicroTCA-based Application-Ready Platformsthat enable the

development of all the major components in an LTE network; eNodeB, EPC, Policy, Charging

and Rules Function (PCRF) and Home Subscriber Systems (HSS). They are right-sized, high-performance and five-nines reliable. LTE-based solutions can be tightly integrated or

separate/dedicated components and they can scale up or down, based on specific deployments,

number of subscribers and usage rates.

In addition, PTsIPnexus Element Management System (EMS)can manage all of these network

elements via a single, intuitive, browser based and comprehensive GUI. With PTs platforms, these elements can be developed on the same platform, making the complete product line easy to

maintain and cost-effective. PTs LTE Application-Ready platforms include all the major

building blocks pre-integrated and configured for high performance, scalability, flexibility, highavailability and compatibility.

    Quad-Core Xeon Processor AMCs

NexusWare, PT's Carrier Grade Linux distribution software

These application-ready platforms work right out-of-the box to enable telecommunications

equipment manufacturers to focus on getting their products out the door faster and ahead of

    schedule.

Where PTs Platforms Fit in the LTE Network

    Evolved Packet Core (EPC)

Mobile Management Entity (MME):Manages the subscriber session control planefunctionality, which uses the S1-C (C is for Control Plane) interface to communicate

through the eNodeB to the UE. Authentication, authorization, ciphering and security key

management are all dealt with by the MME.

Serving Gateway (SGW): Receives and routes all UE packet data and serves as a

mobility anchor while UEs transition between eNodeBs. The SGW uses the S5 interface

to route data packets to a PDN Gateway within the same core network and adheres to the

S8 interface specifications when routing to a different networks PDN Gateways, such asin the case of a roaming UE.

PDN Gateway (PGW): Routes data packets from the SGW to external services such as

the Internet, IP Multimedia Systems (IMS), or PSTN. The PGW performs packetfiltering, policy enforcement and lawful interception, charging support and packet

    screening.

EPC/PCRF Configuration in the Monterey 8000 Platform

    PCRF

Operating as part of the core, it manages policy rules in real-time, accessing data from the

    HSS and charging systems.

    HSS

As part of the IMS, it is the master database that contains and manages subscriberinformation, and it enables Authentication, Authorization and Accounting (AAA).
