Journaling Rules (Archive individual mailboxes to any SMTP address)

Journaling is the ability to record all communications, including e-mail communications for e-mail retention, archival or compliance strategy. Although Exchange Labs will not provide archival storage a school admin may wish to journal a specific mailbox to another Exchange Labs mailbox or to an external SMTP address for compliance reasons. An example would be a student is under investigation for bad behavior, the IT Admin sets a journaling rule to copy all email from that student to a specified e-mail that can be used for review.


Support for Identity Lifecycle ManagerSupports synchronized provisioning and updates of users to Exchange Labs from any internal directory. Installation of ILM is an IT Pro scenario and is usually installed with the help of a partner/vendor on-site with the customer

Role Management via PowerShellIT administrators may want to lock down certain aspects of Exchange Labs management for some roles. An example would be Helpdesk only has the ability to reset end user passwords but not add new users

Enhanced web administration toolsWeb management UI gets a new look and feel with some functionality updates

Using the same mechanism that is supported by Live@edu and Hotmail today, a school will be able to upload their school logo to a web tool and brand the OWA premium interface with that logo.


Single Sign-on API (Web only)The Single Sign on API from the Live@edu team allows a school to authenticate a student into their portal using their school credentials they could provide a link to Live ID web based services including OWA and that student will 'log-in' without needing to sign in with their Live ID. There is some work for the school to implement this service and the user still has two sets of credentials to maintain. Additionally this only works for Web based services such as OWA, but does not work for clients such as Outlook where the student will still need to sign in with their Live ID. Finally, it doesn’t work the other way around (if the user is signed into OWA and then links to the University Portal they will not be signed in).


E-mail account aggregation (import mail from POP accounts)

User will have the ability to connect to multiple outside e-mail POP and HTTP accounts e.g. Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail and see them all in one inbox in OWA. This is similar to the functionality they have in Outlook today

Multi-language support for e-mailEnd users will be able to set language preference in the OWA interface

E-mail status websiteEnd users will be able to see the status of their email server before logging on. Basic status will be available such as Green (no issues), Yellow (some issues), Red (Mailbox unavailable)


PowerShell update An update to the remote PowerShell and cmdlets that will enable rich Line of Business applications to be developed against PowerShell

Mailbox AuditingIT Pros can discover if changes to mailbox configurations have been performed. e.g. if compliance features such as mailbox journaling policies, transport journaling rules, etc. have been changed. This is also useful for troubleshooting scenarios.

Directory Sync toolFor schools with Exchange 2007 on premise they will have the ability to do 2 way GAL synchronization including Users, Contacts, Distribution Groups

Moderated Distribution GroupsAbility to control email delivery to protected distribution groups and users by restricting to and pending from an email approval process


Auto resource booking (Rooms, equipment)Create resources that can be ‘auto booked’ through Exchange Labs calendaring. Examples include equipment such as projectors, rooms, etc.

Shared free/busy with on-premise Exchange 2007For schools with Exchange 2007 on premise they will have the ability to do share free/busy information with users in Exchange Labs
