Gerard KoekWaar houdt het ware beeld zich op? Is dat in de materiële gedaante waarin het zich toont , in het beeld dat er door wordt opgeroepen of juist in het beeld dat er door wordt gemaskeerd? Het is deze afweging van de talloze hoedanigheden waarin een werk zich kan manifesteren die de exposanten in deze presentatie met elkaar verbindt. Tijdens de bijeenkomsten die Emma Grout, Karina van Leengoed, Simon Weins en Gerard Koek hadden, passeerden allerlei aspekten van het kunstwerk zoals de materialiteit of de aanraakbaarheid maar ook de ongrijpbare maar niettemin aanwezige kracht van suggestie. Voor zowel Simon die afkomstig is uit Duitsland, Karina die werkt in België als Emma die een gedeeld Nederlands-Engelse achtergrond heeft, blijkt het aspekt van vertaling en omzetting een belangrijk onderdeel uit te maken van het denk- en werkproces. Dat wat zich aandient moet worden geherformuleerd, herschreven, verplaatst maar in ieder geval in kritische zin worden hernomen.Een omgang met ruimte en tijd is op meerdere manieren zichtbaar. Wanneer Simon in een van zijn werken een muur uitschuurt wordt, evenals dat bij een

weer uitgegumde muurtekening van Karina het geval is, de tijd tastbaar. De ruimte waar je je in bevind raakt zo, via soms minieme sporen, betrokken in een bijna elastische tijdservaring. Handelingen als assembleren, uitgummen, toedekken, stapelen en schuren verwijzen niet alleen naar materialiteit maar roepen ook een besef op dat beelden permanent verbonden zijn met verandering.

Binnen de gedeelde fascinatie voor vertaling en omzetting blijken taal en woorden een, soms zelfs direkte, rol te spelen. Het wissen (Karina) of het juist samenvoegen van woorden (Simon) weerspiegelt een talige benadering. Waar bij Gerard sprake is van een verbaal referentiekader in dialoog met beeld, daar valt het werk van Emma altijd te relateren aan een breed narratief vertrekpunt. Dat kan lopen van zeer letterlijke en ontregelende vertalingen tot omzettingen die leiden tot nieuwe beeldsensaties. Bij de presentatie in Kunstpodium T zal het werk, afzonderlijk én in samenwerking ontstaan, hopelijk uitdagen tot betrokkenheid ‘as in other words’ : tot een vorm van dialoog.

Emma GroutI have an experimental methodology and a love for, sometimes unusual, materials and techniques. I search for and work with the representation and imagining of alternative worlds. I create frameworks in which stories can exist and develop. Sometimes I write part of the story and allow the reader or viewer to fill in the missing parts, other times I only suggest a setting and the story becomes more of a physical object than a narrative. The representation of a story can take on many forms besides written text, and written text can envelop a lot more than the classic form of a book. This exploration is practical as well as theoretic and therefore my work has a balance between image and text, a balance between conceptual thinking and intuitive acting. The result of this exploration is a multitude of pieces in various sizes and dimensions that can be added to a space and interact with this space and with one and other even when they are not directly related. By doing

this I try to create an atmosphere which exists somewhere between the poetic, romantic and nostalgic. In the end I hope to make a person aware of the world in which we live by highlighting the small, the unnoticed and the strange.

In the ‘As In Other Words’ exhibition I tried to act as a balancer. Where the others deconstructed the space, I added to the space. When the other artworks were big in dimensions, I placed my smaller items near, opposite or in otherwise unused areas of the spaces. I also anticipated a lack of colour and a multitude of abstract work. To counter this I decided to incorporate more colour into my own work and to focus entirely on the traditional figurative painting for one artwork. By combining these actions or objects with the more sizeable or deconstructive artworks I think we created a complete and well balanced whole.

Karina van LeengoedHer work is about time, space and action.The handling in her work is based on what a particular material asks of her. The slow handling consist of a constant frequency, so that there a volume be created. This is important for to create a useless action in the work. She has a fascination for the meditative, where the end result is not important, but the action itself. At the same time communicate the remains of this action with the spectator.

Simon Weins Currently, I am exploring the relationship of material and time. For Kunstpodium T I chose to bring two objects I had already created back in my studio in Maastricht. At the same time I also wanted to work directly with the space provided. One of the projects I got to work with Karina van Leengoed. We both have a fascination for de-constructive gestures that explicitly open up the space. This similarity in our work became clear early along in the project, so we decided that we wanted to combine parts of our work. The idea was basically that we would sand the walls which were covered in a multitude of paint layers and use the abraded dust to make new paint. This home made paint would then be used to recolour the grinned spots on the walls. Our first day at Kunstpodium T we decided to arrange the worked on areas as a straight line or separation through the entire exhibition.

All my other works I had already worked on or experimented with back in my own studio. I had already explored the brick floor drawings before coming to Tilburg. Once at Kunstpodium T however I was intrigued by the big circular fireplace in the back garden which was made of old handmade bricks. So I used some of the bricks that were lying around to make a kind of analogue in one of the rooms side the exhibition space.The finished objects I brought to the exhibition from Maastricht were the clock and the wooden slat with the coin fading. These were mere modular elements, that had a very general relationship with the space and the situation: The stick as something that is part of the romantic image of the rambler and the clock as an everyday object hanging on the wall. Both materially linked to concepts of time and function.
