2014 wasanothergoodyearforAmsterdamasabusinessdestination. The number of meetings grew by 9%

comparedto2013,andweachievedeighthplaceintherankingsoftheInternationalCongressandConventionAssociation(ICCA)andanincreaseinthenumberofparticipantdays.Allexcellentresults.

In this sixth edition of the Key Figures, you will probably notice a signif-icant change. While previously we focused on international meetings of two or more days with a minimum of 40 participants, in 2014 we looked at all of the business meetings with more than 10 participants. This means that in addition to the usual figures, this publication will also give you more insight into national and one-day meetings. Basi-cally, we present a more comprehensive overview of Amsterdam as a business destination.

In 2014 Amsterdam opened its doors to a number of well-estab-lished meetings, such as the International Broadcasting Conference (IBC); but of course there was also room for newcomers. For exam-ple, we welcomed with open arms Europrevent’s announcement that it has chosen Amsterdam as the venue for its conference on combating and preventing child obesity. The wide variety of themes of these meetings, from topics such as sustainability to games and from international security to micro-organisms, is proof that Amsterdam is a multi-faceted conference city again this year.

And the developments continue. We developed the Iamsterdam Ap-proved label, which signifies a major push in terms of quality for all the parties involved in the MICE in Amsterdam. The significant increase in hotel capacity in the luxury segment in recent years will be crowned mid-2016 with a brand new hotel at the RAI (the largest in the Bene-lux) designed by Rem Koolhaas. In terms of transport, we see that the construction of the new North-South Line, with a dedicated stop for the RAI, is progressing well and that its planned opening in 2017 can be achieved.

We are proud of these positive results and we welcome you to the world of the Amsterdam conference visitor.

Which meetings are included in the Amsterdam Marketing (AM) meeting databank? The criteria for meetings that are included in the AM meetings database were changed in 2014. Previously, only international meet-ings in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area were included that lasted for a minimum of two days and had a minimum of 40 partic-ipants, a third of whom live abroad. Since 2014, both national and international meet-ings in the Metropolitan Area have been in-cluded. Another difference is that one-day meetings are included as well, and that all meetings have a minimum of 10 partici-pants. This results in a better overview of all the meetings that take place in the Am-sterdam Metropolitan Area. For events that combine a conference and an exhibition, such as the International Broadcasting Con-vention (IBC), only the conference partici-pants are included. The exhibition visitors are not taken into account because exhibi-tions do not fall into the meetings category. They do of course attract international vis-itors. For this reason, they are shown sepa-rately in this report.

What information does the AM meeting databank contain? The databank contains all of the relevant data for a business meeting. In addition to general information such as name, date and website, it also contains specific data such as the number of anticipated and actual participants, the duration of the meeting in days, the number of participant days, the name of the association/PCO and the trade sector of the meeting. Only meetings that AM has full information about are included in the databank. Furthermore, the databank

contains important information regarding the location, such as name, address, type, hotel classification and geocode. These details can ultimately be categorised and compared and combined together. This method means it is possible to retrieve vari-able information from the databank and to select the most interesting data for further research.

How was the information in the AM meeting databank com-piled?For the data collection itself, AM directly approached the most important meeting locations (both meeting locations and ho-tels with meeting facilities) and congress organisers (PCOs and DMCs) in Amsterdam and the surrounding area. In order to paint as broad a picture as possible, businesses that are not partners of AM were also ap-proached. The information supplied was subsequently checked by AM, tested for ac-curacy and entered into the database. The databank was also compared to the ICCA databank.

Which other sources were consulted for this report? In addition to the statistics from the AM meeting databank, leads received from the department of Business Marketing were also used. All other sources are clearly stat-ed within the report. In the event that an external source was consulted, this is also stated.

In 2014 telde Amsterdam 180 nationaliteiten.

Within the city, persons aged between 20 and 39 are clearly over-represented in comparison with the rest of the Netherlands (36% versus 24%). Persons aged over 45 are under-represented compared to the na-tional figure (36% versus 45%).

Amsterdam consisted of 180 nationalities in 2014. Around half of Amsterdam’s inhabitants come from abroad and/or are of foreign descent. Compare this with the national average of 21%. This makes Amster-dam an ideal multicultural destination. In particular, at 35%, the percentage of non-Western ethnic mi-norities in Amsterdam is more than three times high-er than the Dutch national average (12%).

Amsterdam has a highly educated working popula-tion. In total, 57% of the working population has un-dertaken a course in higher education. Compared to the national figure for the Netherlands (36%), this is very high. The difference is not only in higher educa-tion. Even the share of employees with only a low lev-el of education (11%) is significantly lower than across the whole of the Netherlands (20%).

As of early 2013, there were 112,802 businesses registered in Amsterdam. This shows an increase of 5% over the previous year. The number of busi-nesses across the entire Metropolitan Area rose to 237,455 (+4% over 2012).

Amsterdam leads the way when it comes to the development of new businesses compared to the Dutch national average (+2%). Amsterdam’s share in the total Dutch business sector remains very sta-ble. Currently the Metropolitan Area is still home to 18% of all registered businesses in the Nether-lands.

As a result of the economic recession, unemploy-ment in the Metropolitan Area has increased from 6% in 2009 to 9% in 2013.

In Amsterdam, chain hotels have an 85% share of the market. This is similar to Madrid (85%) and Brussels (84%), but higher than Stockholm (76%), Budapest (70%), London (66%) and Copenhagen (65%). The organisers of business meetings (conference organisers, meeting planners, associations etc.) often opt for a hotel chain for meetings and accommodation. The advantage for them is that it can be easier to compare the quality levels of hotel chains. A meeting planner knows exactly what to expect if he or she chooses a standardised hotel product. Furthermore a brand name plays a significant role in the choice of location. The European cities scoring higher than Amsterdam on the ICCA ranking do have a higher room capaci-ty than Amsterdam. This is particularly true for Amsterdam’s biggest competitors: Vienna (26,916), Paris (75,491), Berlin (48,363), Madrid (34,751) and London (93,925).

Hotelovernachtingen in Amsterdam

Overnight stays in Amsterdam

In addition to the Dutch market, GreatBritain and the United States form the

largest markets for Amsterdam hotels.Fromthis,itcanbeconcludedthatEnglishisthenativelanguageandofficiallanguageofabout30%oftheforeignvisitorstoAm-sterdam.

In total, Amsterdam registered a record 12,538,000 hotel overnight stays during 2014 (11.3%). If we consider the distribution of overnight stays between the leisure and business sectors, we can clearly see that both increased in 2014, with the leisure segment growing more (+15.3%) than the business segment (+5.9%) Besides the fact that there were significant-ly more Dutch overnight stays registered in Amsterdam (+8.4%), overnight stays gen-erated by all other core markets showed an increase. Especially Germany (+19.1%), Great Britain (+15.5%) and Italy (+13.3%) showed significant growth. As in the previous year, the visitor numbers from the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia,

India and China) showed different trends. While the number of hotel stays by Indian (+32.1%) and Brazilian (+15%) visitors grew in 2014, the overnight stays by visitors from Russia (-3.8%) and China (-5.5%) fell. The drop in the number of hotel stays by Russian visitors is due to the low rouble ex-change rate and the crisis in Ukraine. The Chinese guests are more widely distribut-ed across the metropolitan region, where an increase of more than 60% in the num-ber of hotel stays was seen.

The amount of overnight stays in hotels in the region has increased by 6.7%. The amount of overnight stays by foreign guests increased by 11.6% (compared to 15.3% in Amsterdam). RevPAR (revenue per available room) is the key performance indicator in the hotel in-dustry. In 2014, Amsterdam’s RevPAR was €97.90. This means that in spite of the in-crease in the number of hotel rooms, the RevPAR grew by 4.7% compared to the previous year.

London and Paris are the largest tourist cities in Europe. These two cities together account for 41% of the total number of foreign overnight stays in these 10 cities.

Although Rome and Barcelona in 3rd and 4th places score significantly lower than London and Paris, they are separated from the other cities due to their greater accommodation capacity. Between 2013 and 2014, the number of foreign over-night stays in the top 10 cities increased by 7.3%.

Total summary of international meetings

In Amsterdam a total of 2598 international meetings that fulfilled the newcriteria took place in 2014. This includes both international corporate and

non-corporatemeetings.

16% of these meetings were non-corporate. These meetings nevertheless accounted for 54% of the total number of conference participants in Amsterdam.

The international non-corporate meetings were visited by 416 participants on average, which is 361 participants less than in 2013. This can be explained by the new criteria, meetings which last one day and meetings with a minimum of 10 participants are included in the selection. With an average of 70 participants, the corporate meetings were significantly smaller than non-corporate meetings.

Corporate meetings have a commercial purpose and are organised by companies. Non-corporate meet-ings are organised by the government or an association (trade/industry) with the aim of sharing exper-tise. For an extensive description of these concepts, please refer to page 31.

The disciplines are based on the ICCA’s conference categories. “General” includes meetings which, due to location of the meeting, do not unambiguous-

The seasonality of national and international corporate meet-ings is more or less the same in 2014. This can perhaps be ex-plained by the economy, which is recovering both nationally and internationally.

The peak that was witnessed in April was caused by a number of national corporate meetings with many participants, such as a private sales event that was visited by 3,500 participants.

The proportion of national non-corporate meetings was just 1.8% in the months of July and August. International non-corporate meetings held a share of 6.1% in July and 3.2% in August. Visitors to international non-cor-porate meetings are thus more willing to go to these in the summer holi-day months, while national meetings are planned around this holiday pe-riod more often. The average number of participants peaked in December. At the time there were a few national non-corporate conferences with many partici-pants, one of which was the National Library Conference.

Beurzen

Hier vinden zowel kleinere vakbeurzen (The European Fine Art Fair, Or-ganic Wine Fair of the Lowlands) plaats alsook side events van beurzen en congressen zoals sym-posia.

Trade shows

and leisure tourism, Amsterdamisalsoanimportantcityfortradeshows.Onlyapartofthesetradeshowsisinternational.

Most trade shows in Amsterdam take place annually and strength-en the long term attraction of the city of Amsterdam by their recur-ring nature.

The list in-cludes exhibitions with more than 20,000 visitors. These exhibitions can either be public exhibitions, trade shows or exhibitions that appeal to a mixed public. The largest public trade shows in Am-sterdam take place in the Amster-dam RAI. In addition to the Amsterdam RAI there are also a number of exhibi-tion locations in the city, i.e. the Westergasfabriek, the Beurs van Berlage and the Passenger Ter-minal Amsterdam. Smaller trade shows take place here (The Euro-pean Fine Art Fair, Organic Wine Fair of the Lowlands) together with exhibition and conference side events such as symposia.

Amsterdam also hosts other important events of a comparable nature. For example, each year the open-ing of the cultural season, the Uit-markt, takes place in Amsterdam. During this event some 500,000 na-tional visitors get a taste of the new cultural programme and tickets for cultural events are sold. There are also festival organisers present who are on the lookout for artists for their festival programmes.

31AM Amsterdam as a conference destination: Key figures 2015

I. AssociatiecongressenAssociatiecongressen brengen mensen samen met gemeenschappelijke professionele, wetenschappelij-ke of sociale interesses.

Europees of internationaal niveau.

(Inter)national corporate meetingsCorporate meetings are (inter)national meetings with a commercial aim (meetings, product launch-es, client events, training sessions, incentives, etc.) in which the initiative is always taken by the busi-ness sector and the booking is organised by a com-pany.

(Inter)national non-corporate meetingsNon-corporate meetings are distinguished from corporate meetings because the meeting is organ-ised by a (trade) association or body. There are two variants, i.e:

I. Association conferencesAssociation conferences bring people with com-mon professional, scientific or social interests to-gether. An association is an (inter)national associa-tion of people with the same interest or discipline. One feature of conferences organised by associa-tions is that they are often recurring events with a long lead time which are seldom organised within a short time in the same country. Association confer-ences often rotate between various countries. The organisation of this type of conference is often in the hands of a group of initiative takers who form a ‘local organising committee’ (l.o.c.). This local organisation invites the international association to hold the conference in the home country of the l.o.c. In Amsterdam the largest share within the non-corporate sector consists of association con-ferences. Any reference to non-corporate confer-ences within this report is also understood to refer to association conferences.

II. Governmental meetingsGovernmental non-corporate meetings consist of people who come together to exchange ministerial or governmental themes, to share expertise or to assemble. Participants in these meetings may be of national or international origin. For this defined target group, this involves meetings at a national, European or international level. These meetings take place to a lesser extent in Amsterdam, with

most government meetings held in the governing city of The Hague.

VenuesConference venues are meeting locations that are not established within a hotel. These can be spe-cial conference centres as well as exhibition and/or meeting rooms of cultural or educational facilities.

DurationThe duration of a meeting is stated in days. Only the days with a programme of content are includ-ed in this figure. Days used for the setting up and taking down of a meeting are not included in this figure.

Participant daysThe number of participant days is a quantitative measure that takes into account two important criteria of a meeting: the duration of a meeting in days and the number of participants. Both of these criteria are multiplied together in order to be able to compare meetings to each other.

Business travellersA concept that is used to distinguish a visitor who is travelling for business purposes and who stays overnight, unless stated otherwise.

Leisure travellersA concept which is used to distinguish a visitor who is travelling for leisure purposes and who stays overnight, unless stated otherwise.

Business MarketingFormerly known as the Amsterdam Convention Board (ACB), this department is part of Amsterdam Marketing. Business Marketing is responsible for the (inter)national promotion of the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area as an optimal location for in-vestment, conventions and establishing a business.
