6Voor de eerste maal in Belgi wordt een overzichtstentoonstel-ling van het werk van de Britse kunstenaar Ryan Gander (1976) gepresenteerd. Zijn werk kan de vorm aannemen van een actie, een sculptuur, een installatie, maar ook een gedachte, een be-lofte of een ontmoeting. Ryan Gander speelt graag met absurde logicas en verrassende inzichten over zichzelf en zijn omringen-de leefwereld. Met zijn verbeelding daagt hij de verwachtings-patronen van de toeschouwer steeds opnieuw uit. Niets is wat je denkt te weten, en al zijn werken lijken puzzelstukken te zijn waarvan te vrezen valt dat ze uiteindelijk nooit perfect in elkaar zullen passen.

7Une rtrospective de luvre de lartiste britannique Ryan Gander (1976) sera prsente pour la premire fois en Belgique. Son uvre peut prendre la forme dune action, dune sculpture ou dune installation, mais aussi dune pense, dune promesse ou dune rencontre. Ryan Gander aime manier les logiques absurdes et les rflexions surprenantes sur lui et sur le monde qui lentoure. Son imagination dfie constamment les attentes du spectateur. Ce quon pense savoir nest pas la ralit. Toutes les uvres de lartiste sapparentent des pices de puzzle dont on craint quelles ne sembotent jamais parfaitement les unes dans les autres.

The work of the British artist Ryan Gander (b.1976) is presented for the first time in a retrospective in Belgium. His work can take on the form of an action, a sculpture, an installation, but also a thought, a promise or an encounter. Ryan Gander likes to play with absurd logic and surprising insights about himself and his surrounding environment. He uses his imagination to challenge, time and again, the expectations of the viewer. Nothing is what one thinks to know, and all his works are like puzzle pieces of which it is feared that ultimately they will never fit together perfectly.

Deze lente wordt het werk van twee kunstenaars samenge-bracht die in New York wonen en werken. Zowel Julie Mehretu (1970) als Jessica Rankin (1971) spelen in hun werk met de grenzen van de abstracte kunst en met het momentum wanneer lijnen, kleuren en vlakken opnieuw een realiteit of een ervaring kunnen verbeelden. Terwijl Mehretu in de eerste plaats gebruik maakt van de grootstedelijke dynamiek, herwerkt Rankin onder meer de typerende composities van geografische en astronomische kaarten tot levendige organismen. Beide kunstenaars spelen daarenboven met verschillende materialen en vormen van schriftuur en textuur, wat resulteert in heel ver-schillende resultaten.

Le printemps runira les uvres de deux artistes qui vivent et travaillent New York. Julie Mehretu (1970) et Jessica Rankin (1971) flirtent toutes les deux avec les limites de lart abstrait et explorent le moment o les lignes, les couleurs et les surfaces peuvent nouveau reprsenter une ralit ou une exprience. L o Mehretu utilise avant tout la dynamique des grandes villes, Rankin transforme notamment les compositions typiques des cartes gographiques et astronomiques en organismes vivants. Les deux artistes utilisent, en outre, plusieurs matriaux et diverses formes dcriture et de texture avec, la cl, des rsultats rsolument diffrents.

This spring we bring together the work of two artists who live and work in New York. In their work, both Julie Mehretu (b.1970) and Jessica Rankin (b.1971) play with the boundaries of abstract art and the momentum that occurs when lines, colours and surfaces come to depict, once again, a reality or an experience. While Mehretu primarily uses the metropolitan dynamic, Rankin reworks, among others, the typical compositions of geograph-ical and astronomical maps into lively organisms. Both artists also play with different materials and various forms of composi-tion and texture, which leads to very different outcomes.

De Binnale van de Schilderkunst is aan zijn vijfde editie toe. De drie regionale musea van de Leiestreek werken opnieuw samen om schilderkunst uit de laatste honderdvijftig jaar samen te brengen. Ook hedendaagse schilderkunst speelt een promi-nente rol in dit project. Deze editie spitst zich toe op het verlan-gen naar het onbekende en exotische versus de zekerheid van de eigen lokale omgeving. In MDD vormt het werk van twee kunstenaars uit de eigen museumcollectie, James Ensor en Albijn van den Abeele, het vertrekpunt voor een schilderkunstige ontdekkingstocht met een heel aantal kunstenaars van verschil-lende generaties en contreien.

In samenwerking met Museum van Deinze en de Leiestreek (Deinze) en Roger Raveelmuseum (Machelen-Zulte).

La cinquime dition de la Biennale de la Peinture approche grands pas. Les trois muses rgionaux du Pays de la Lys tra-vailleront nouveau de concert pour prsenter la peinture des cent cinquante dernires annes. Le projet fera galement la part belle la peinture contemporaine. Cette dition se cristalli-sera sur lopposition entre, dune part, lattrait de linconnu et de lexotisme et, dautre part, la certitude quoffre lenvironnement local. Au MDD, luvre de deux artistes de la collection du muse, James Ensor et Albijn den Abeele, formera le point de dpart dun voyage artistique la dcouverte dune multitude dartistes issus de diffrentes gnrations et contres.

En association avec le Muse de Deinze et du pays de la Lys (Deinze) et le muse Roger Raveel (Machelen-Zulte).

The Biennale of Painting is in its fifth edition. The three regional museums of the Lys region join hands again to bring together paintings from the last hundred and fifty years. Contemporary painting plays a prominent role in this project as well. This edition focuses on the longing for the unknown and exotic versus the certainty of the personal, and local environment. At MDD the work of two artists from the museums own collection, James Ensor and Albijn van den Abeele, forms the departure point for a painterly exploration with a variety of artists from dif-ferent generations and regions.

De Amerikaanse kunstenaar Richard Aldrich (1975) maakt gebruik van heel verschillende schilderstijlen om een oeuvre op te bouwen dat zowel handelt over zijn eigen leefwereld als de literatuur, de muziek en de kunstgeschiedenis. Zijn werk kan er heel expressief uitzien, maar ook minimalistisch en wel doordacht, de ene keer abstract, een andere keer weer figura-tief, soms geschilderd met pasteuze verftoetsen, soms ook vlak en zonder textuur. Na de vele vernieuwingen die het medium schilderkunst heeft doorgemaakt in de twintigste eeuw, heeft een kunstenaar als Richard Aldrich de vrijheid om radicaal zijn zin te doen en te experimenteren, en kan hij in elke tentoonstel-ling nieuwe verhaallijnen of betekenislagen toevoegen aan zijn oeuvre.

L artiste amricain Richard Aldrich (1975) utilise de nombreux styles de peinture diffrents pour composer des uvres qui portent tant sur son propre univers que sur la littrature, la mu-sique et lhistoire de lart. Son uvre est tantt expressive, tantt minimaliste et rflchie. Tantt abstraite, tantt figurative. Elle alterne les touches de peinture pteuse et les toiles lisses sans texture. Aprs les nombreux renouvellements que la peinture a connus au 20e sicle, un artiste tel que Richard Aldrich a le droit de faire ce quil veut et dexprimenter. Libre lui dajouter de nouvelles intrigues ou couches de sens son uvre lors de chaque exposition.

The American artist Richard Aldrich (b.1975) uses many different painting styles to create a body of work that deals with both his own living environment as well as literature, music and art history. His work can at times appear quite expressive, yet also minimalist and well thought out, it is sometimes abstract, at oth-er times figurative, sometimes painted with impasto brushwork, sometimes flat and devoid of texture. After the many innovations that the medium of painting has gone through in the twentieth century, an artist like Richard Aldrich has the ultimate freedom to do as he pleases and experiment at will, adding in each exhibi-tion new story lines or layers of meaning to his work.

Lieven De Boeck (1971) werkt al meerdere jaren aan een oeuvre dat zich ontplooit als een persoonlijk archief waarin hij verschillende classificaties en typologien verwerkt. In dit werk speelt Lieven De Boeck met spiegelingen, verdraaiingen en verbindingen, waardoor hij nieuwe betekenissen en interpreta-ties laat ontstaan over identiteit, taal en tekens, de private en publieke ruimte, het origineel en de kopie. Veel van zijn werken situeren zich in de zone tussen verschijning en verdwijning, waarnaar de tentoonstellingstitel Image Not Found ook verwijst.

Image Not Found wordt gerealiseerd in co-productie met FRAC Marseille.

Lieven De Boeck (1971) travaille depuis plusieurs annes une uvre qui se dploie telles des archives personnelles o sintgrent plusieurs classifications et typologies. Lieven De Boeck joue avec les reflets, les dformations et les liaisons pour donner naissance de nouvelles significations et interprtations en matire didentit, de langue et de signe, despace public et priv, doriginal et de copie. Bon nombre de ses uvres se si-tuent au carrefour entre lapparition et la disparition. Un carrefour auquel fait rfrence le titre de lexposition: Image Not Found.

Image Not Found est coproduite par FRAC Marseille.

For several years, Lieven De Boeck (b.1971) has been working on an oeuvre that unfolds as a personal archive in which he incorporates various classifications and typologies. In his work, Lieven De Boeck plays with mirrorings, distortions and connec-tions, through which he creates new meanings and interpreta-tions of identity, signs and language, the private and the public space, the original and the copy. Many of his works exist in the space between appearance and disappearance, to which the exhibition title Image Not Found aptly refers.

Image Not Found is realized in co-production with FRAC Marseille.

Summer camps

In de zomer toveren we het museum Dhondt-Dhaenens twee weken om tot een heerlijke kampplaats voor kinderen van 7 tot 14 jaar waar kunst in alle aspecten aan bod komt met een vleugje avontuur en vooral een grote dosis plezier (en waarom niet veel zon) Een eerste kamp wordt voorzien van 8 augustus tot 12 au-gustus (7 - 10 jaar), een tweede van 15 augustus tot 19 augustus (11 - 14 jaar). Een leerrijke maar tegelijk ook een spannende en energieke week vol ontdekkingen! De ervaren begeleiders zor-gen voor een onvergetelijke ervaring voor de kinderen. Ze laten zich inspireren door de kunstwerken in het museum, bezoeken met hen een kunstenaarsatelier en experimenteren er op los Op het einde van de week is er telkens een toonmoment voor de ouders.

Lt venu, nous transformons dun coup de baguette magique pendant deux semaines le muse Dhondt-Dhaenens en un camp pour les enfants de 7 10 ans o sinvitent lart sous toutes ses facettes, un soupon daventure et, surtout, une bonne dose de plaisir (peut-tre mme de soleil) Un premier camp est prvu du 8 au 12 aot (7 - 10 ans), un deuxime lest du 15 au 19 aot (11 - 14 ans). Une semaine instructive, mais aussi riche en dcouvertes captivantes et nergiques ! Les accompagnateurs aguerris assurent une exprience inoubliable aux enfants. Ils s'inspirent des uvres d'art prsentes au muse, visitent un atelier d'artiste avec eux et exprimentent tous azimuts La semaine se termine toujours par un moment exposition pour les parents.

Woning Van Wassenhove is een ontwerp van architect Juliaan Lampens in opdracht van Albert Van Wassenhove, die er van 1974 tot zijn overlijden in 2012 woonde. Albert Van Wassenhove legateerde het gebouw aan de Universiteit Gent die het op zijn beurt in langdurig beheer gaf aan het museum Dhondt-Dhaenens. De restauratie van de woning in 2015 werd mogelijk gemaakt dankzij de steun van Philippe en Miene Gillion. In het najaar van 2015 ontving de woning haar eerste resident: Ives Maes. Villa DD/, gelegen langs de Leie vlakbij het museum, wordt in 2016 verbouwd tot een indruk-wekkend werk van kunstenaar Hans Op de Beeck. Het zal de bibliotheek van Jan Hoet herbergen en plaats bieden aan een resident. Vanaf 2017 worden residenties georganiseerd in Villa DD/. De residentieplaatsen zijn een bijzondere reflectieplek om in alle rust en isolement een bepaald project te conceptuali-seren, te realiseren, uit te werken en te onderzoeken. In

The House Van Wassenhove was designed by architect Julian Lampens and originally commissioned by Albert Van Wassenhove, who lived in it from 1974 until his death in 2012. Albert Van Wassenhove bequeathed the building to the University of Ghent, which in turn gave the long-term manage-ment to the museum Dhondt-Dhaenens. The restoration of the house in 2015 was made possible thanks to the support of Philippe and Miene Gillion. In the fall of 2015 the house wel-comed its first resident: Ives Maes. Villa DD/, located along the Lys near the museum will be fully renovated in 2016 and transformed into an impressive work by artist Hans Op de Beeck. It will house the Jan Hoet library and provide accommodation for one resident. Residencies will be organized in Villa DD/ as of 2017. The residency places are unique places of reflection where artists can conceptualize, realize, elaborate and explore their projects in complete quietude and isolation.

In het najaar van 2015 startte het museum Dhondt-Dhaenenseen residentieprogramma in Woning Van Wassenhove. Re-gelmatig zullen kunstenaars en onderzoekers in de Leiestreek verblijven en op het einde van hun residentie een lezing of toonmoment organiseren. Als Vriend bent u onze bevoorrechte gast tijdens deze ontmoetingen in de huiselijke sfeer van Woning Van Wassenhove (en vanaf 2017 Villa DD/). Elk jaar staat bovendien een jonge kunstenaar centraal die we met de Vrienden leren kennen aan de hand van een atelierbezoek, tentoonstelling of lezing. Deze kunstenaar krijgt ook de opdracht om een Vriendeneditie te creren, een kunstwerk op 300 exemplaren, exclusief en gratis voor de Vrienden. Tenslotte geniet je als Vriend ook nog van talrijke andere voordelen zoals gratis toegang tot het museum, kortingen op lezingen, Vrienden-rondleiding voor de opening van elke tentoonstelling en de postuitnodigingen.

In the autumn of 2015, the museum Dhondt-Dhaenens start-ed a residency programme in the House Van Wassenhove. Artists and researchers will be regularly invited to stay in the Lys region and organise a lecture or presentation moment at the end of their residency. As a Friend, you will be our privileged guest at these meetings in the homey atmosphere of the House Van Wassenhove (and from 2017 in VillaDD/). Every year, we will turn the focus on a young artist we met together with the Friends on the occasion of a studio visit, an exhibition or a lecture. This artist will also be commissioned to create a Friends Edition, a work in an edition of 300 copies, exclusive and free for all Friends. Finally, as a Friend you enjoy numer-ous other benefits such as free admission to the museum, discounts on lectures, the Friends Tour before the opening of each exhibition and the mail invitations.

JongDD/ richt zich tot jonge mensen met een ontluikende interesse voor internationale hedendaagse kunst. Elk jaar is er een programma met een aantal artistieke activiteiten, waaronder een meerdaagse buitenlandse uitstap, nocturnes in het museum en daguistappen met tentoonstellings-, atelier- en collectiebezoeken. ClubDD/ brengt een groep kunstliefhebbers samen die elkaar graag ontmoeten in het aangename kader van het museum of op n van de vele uitstappen in binnen- en buitenland. De begeleiding wordt steeds verzorgd door Joost Declercq (directeur). De Patroons zijn een groep kunstliefhebbers en verzamelaars die het museum actief ondersteunen en maandelijks samenkomen om te discussiren over recente tentoonstellingen, verzamelen en ontwikkelingen in de kunstwereld.

JeuneDD/ sadresse aux jeunes qui dmontrent un intrt naissant pour lart contemporain international. Chaque anne, le programme comprend diverses activits artistiques, dont un voyage de plusieurs jours ltranger, des nocturnes au muse et des excursions incluant la visite dexpositions, dateliers et de collections. ClubDD/ rassemble un groupe damateurs dart qui aiment se retrouver dans le dcor agrable du muse ou lors de lune des nombreuses excursions organises en Belgique et ltranger. Lanimation est toujours assure par Joost Declercq, directeur du muse. Les Patrons sont un groupe damateurs dart et de collectionneurs qui soutiennent activement le muse et se runissent tous les mois pour parler des expositions rcentes, des collections et des volutions dans le monde de lart.

YoungDD/ is aimed at young people with a burgeoning interest in international contemporary art. Every year there is a program with a number of artistic activities, including a multi-day trip abroad, nocturnes in the museum and day trips visiting exhibitions, artists studios and private collections. ClubDD/ brings together a group of art lovers who like to meet in the pleasant environment of the museum or during one of the many trips in Belgium or abroad. Joost Declercq, director of the museum, does the guided art tours. The Patrons are a group of art lovers and collectors who actively support the museum and meet regularly to discuss recent exhibitions, topics on collecting art and new developments in the art world.
