    HellenBrahane- A JASuccess

    Story

Tere was a stage in my life where I had only the interestof passing my exams. I was never engaged in any extracurriculur activities that were going on. However, the

introduction of the Junior Achievement in my formerschool, Sheikh Khalifa High School, Mombasa gave me aninterest I never had. I participated in the Company Programwhich was aimed at giving students an insight on how theycan start their own businesses and run them well. Tis was aturning point for me.I was chosen to be the chief executiveoffi cer of the Student run company where I discovered Ihad leadership ability. My team participated at the 2012Company Program Competitions hosted at Allidina VisramHigh School where we were rst runners up in the Biashara Award Category (Best Overall Student Enterprise).

Junior Achievement also gave knowledge on nancialliteracy and work readiness. After high school, I got aninternship opportunity within JA to support programs

at the Coast region .Being an alumnus, I had an ideaon how to conduct some of the work.I went to severalschools to educate them on entrepreneurship through thecompany program.I also got an opportunity to interactwith many students and teachers who helped build mynetwork and also build my capacity to interact withpeople. Moreover, working in an offi ce environment builtmy understand ing on how to have offi ce ethics and builddatabases where I lled in data.Te internship built me intosomeone I never thought I would be.I was now determinedmore than ever to succeed and learn more and more.

My K.C.S.E results were out and I managed to score an A-and I was admitted to Moi University to pursue Economics. My aggressiveness made my classmates to appoint me asthe class representative where I had the privilege to leadmy class and get in touch with several lecturers who laterbecame my mentors.

Tis was just a stepping stone for me.In theUniversity, elections were being held every year to choose

student leaders who would be incharge of running theuniversity with the help of the administration.I was atrst hesistant because everyone ,me included, viewed it asa position designated for only the brilliant students and itfelt unreachable.Later I decided to give it a try.It was themost trying time of my life because I had less resourcesto campaign among the ten thousand students of MoiUniversity.Nevertheless, the zeal in me made me to pushon. My friends helped me get funds to produce the postersand the banners for the campaigns.I went door to door toask for votes and laying out my manifesto to the students.I

    student leaders at MoiUniversity

had worthy competitors and hence I could not even rest fora second.

Te elections were held after a month and I gannered morevotes than my competitors.I was sworn in the next day andfrom then on so many students looked up to me.ogether,Iand the other student leaders made sure that the studentsgot access to all university equipment and their learningenvironment was conducive.Tis built my network and

I got the chance to interact with the chancellor of theUniversity and other administrators.

I had applied a scholarship to Africa Leadership Universityin Mauritius.Even though the selection process wasrigorous, they selected me among thousands of applicants. From there,I intend to work extra hard to achieve mydreams.

Tis is a testimony of how Junior Achievement hasimpacted me in a manner that I could have not imagined.
