INDUSTRIEEL ONTWERPEN
De masteropleiding industrieel ontwerpen is een vierjarige ingenieursoplei-ding met specialisatie in productontwerpen. Sinds de Europese Bolognaverklaring, die de 2-cycli opleidingen in het hoger onderwijs omvormt naar een tweeledige bachelor-master structuur, is er heel wat veranderd. Het academiseringsproces moet de academische bachelor en masteropleidingen tot volwaardige “academische” opleidingen omvormen zodat ze in hetzelfde kader als universiteiten kunnen beoordeeld worden.Niet alleen docenten en assistenten worden actief betrokken bij onderzoek maar ook bij de studenten wordt speciale aandacht geschonken aan het bijbrengen van onderzoeksvaardigheden. In het opleidingsprogramma gaat veel aandacht naar de onderzoeks- en ontwerpmethodologie bij het ontwerpen van nieuwe producten. Master industrial design engineering is a 4 year education program engi-neering education with a specialization in product design.A lot has been changed since the European Bologna process has started, which aims at reforming 2-cycli higher education programs into bachelor-master structure. The process of academic reform will convert academic higher education programs into the same framework as universities.This process has initiated the organization of university associations in Flanders and a mentality change in the educational landscape is noticed. Besides the fact that professors and assistants are actively involved in research projects, special attention is given to teaching research attitudes. In the education program, for example, special modules research and design methodology are being teached. AVC’S ALUFLAT
AVC’s trapsystemen worden ontworpen met het gebruik van aluminium profielen. Binnen het gamma van AVC’s alu trappen, maakt het bedrijf gebruik van een inox platform dat moet worden gelast, dit is een dure job. AVC wil van deze tijdrovende werkmethode afstappen door het gebruik van een slim alu profiel. AVC’s AluFlat is een modulaire bordes dat perfect past binnen het gamma van AVC’s trapsystemen, dit binnen de ontwerpgrenzen van aluminium extrusie. Deze bordes biedt enerzijds een oplossing voor de tijdrovende assemblagemethode en anderzijds een creatieve oplossing volledig naar de wens van de eindgebruiker, dit op basis van kennis en mid-delen aangeboden door AVC.
AVC staircase systems are designed with the consideration of using alumini-um extrusion profiles. Within the range of AVC’s alu staircases, the company uses a inox platform that has to be welded together, this is an expensive job. AVC wants to leave this time-consuming working method by using smart alu profiles. AVC’s AluFlat is a modular platform that is designed within the range of AVC’s staircase systems, this within the boundaries of alu extrusion design rules. This platform provides solutions as well for the time-consuming assembly method as for finding a creative solution entirely to the wishes of the end-consumer yet on the basis of AVC’s knowledge and resources.

FOHLIA
Tot nu toe had een parasol één functie, namelijk schaduw geven. Bij het hedendaagse gamma van schaduwproducten houdt men meestal een element over die verder geen functie heeft wanneer de parasol niet gebruikt wordt. Fohlia is uniek doordat ze twee evenwaardige functies combineert, nl. schaduw en licht, en biedt zo een meerwaarde doorheen heel de dag. Met de permanente voet en het losneembaar schaduwvlak zijn er drie verschillende configuraties mogelijk. Overdag biedt de Fohlia een ruim roteerbaar schaduwoppervlak, dat onder een hoek staat voor maximaal effect. ’s Avonds geeft de hele voet licht, al dan niet in combinatie met het schaduwvlak. Het schaduwvlak kan zelfs verplaatst worden naar een andere voet.
Up until now, a parasol had one function, providing shade. When the modern scale of shade makers isn’t used, a non-functional object remains. Combining two functions of equal value, namely light and shadow, makes Fohlia unique. By doing this it creates a surplus value through the entire day. The permanent foot and movable shade plane, make three configurations possible. During the day, Fohlia offers a large and rotatable shade plane, which is under an angle for maximum effect. At night the foot lightens up. This can be done with or without the shade plane, which can be moved to another foot if desired.

MOTEX
Motex is een plafondsysteem dat elke ruimte sfeervol en uniek kan maken. De modulaire opbouw zorgt ervoor dat het plafond volledig aanpasbaar is aan zijn omgeving. De basismodule kan in twee richtingen opgehangen worden, waardoor er patronen in het plafondsysteem ontstaan. Deze patronen kunnen versterkt worden door rechtlijnige verlichting tussen de modules te plaatsen. Daarnaast is het mogelijk accenten te leggen in de ruimte door volumes te creëren of door de modules te doen oplichten. De architect heeft een enorme waaier aan mogelijkheden om elk plafond aan de wensen van de klant aan te passen. Motex maakt van het plafond een multifunctionele eyecatcher.
Motex is a ceiling system that gives every room a unique touch. The modular composition makes it possible to transform the ceiling to the specific characteristics of the room. De basic module can be hung up in two directions, which creates a pattern in the ceiling. With extra lights in between the modules, this pattern can be intensified. At last it is possible to accentuate the room by creating volumes or by lighting up the modules.
The architect has the opportunity to adapt every ceiling to the wishes of the customer. Motex transforms the ceiling into a multifunctional eyecatcher.

GREEN REMOTE CONTROL
Voor het gebruiken van een afstandsbediening zijn batterijen een handige energiebron maar zij moeten worden veranderd of opgeladen worden. Dit zorgt voor een grote ecologische en economische impact. De E-mote maakt geen gebruik van batterijen zodat haar energieconsumptie, over de 10-jarige levensduur van het product, 30 tot 82% minder impact heeft op het milieu dan de huidige modellen op de markt. Bij de ontwikkeling werd gekeken naar de volledige levenscyclus met name de productie (gerecy-cleerde materialen), het verbruik (minimaal energieverbruik en geen batterijen nodig) en recyclage (gebruik van gemakkelijk recycleerbare materialen). Daarnaast is de E-mote ergonomisch verantwoord.
For using a remote control batteries are a practical power source butthey must be changed or recharged and so the disposal of batteries isgrowing. For this remote control you don’t need any batteries so the E-motedoes 30% to 82% better on its environmental impact involving energyconsumption, over the products 10 year life span, than current models onthe market. Also the whole lifecycle was taken intoperspective: the impact of the production (using recycled materials), theusage (minimal energy consumption, no use of batteries) and thedisposal (utilizing easily recyclable materials). This ecological approach will not influence the usability.

OmbraLuce is een tuinzetel, met creatie van schaduw overdag en verlichting ‘s avonds. Het schaduw- en lichtvlak kan gemakkelijk veranderd worden door de stengels onder een andere hoek te draaien, of door deze uit het meubel te halen. De innovatieve manier van verlichten geeft het product een exclusieve loungesfeer. De stengels zijn een knipoog naar de natuur en zorgen voor een gezellig en knus gevoel. Dit in combinatie met een strak design voor de zetel, zorgt voor een evenwichtige, frisse uitstraling. Als extra handigheid heeft het meubel een opbergruimte. OmbraLuce is een groen product, door gebruik te maken van RGB powerleds, is het verbruik zeer laag, terwijl het lounge gevoel blijft.
OmbraLuce is a garden seat, which creates shadow during daytime and light at night. The amount of shadow can easily be changed, by rotating the elements, or taking the stalks out of the furniture. The innovative way of illuminating gives the product an exclusive lounge atmosphere. The halms are a wink to nature and provide a nice cosy feeling. This in combination with a tight design of the seat makes a well-balanced and fresh appear-ance. As an added value, the furniture has a storage space. OmbraLuce is a green product, by using RGB powerleds, the use of energy is very low, while the lounge feeling stays.

LICON
Licon is een lichtarmatuur met een dubbel leven. Overdag doet hij dienst als zitobject maar wanneer de avond valt, krijgt de bank een tweede bestaan als lichtobject. Het beton komt tot leven door een lichtspel van lijnen. Dit effect wordt bekomen door de aanwezigheid van optische vezels in het beton. De vezels werden langs één kant gebundeld en van daaruit belicht. Het overige licht wordt gereflecteerd en zorgt voor een warme gloed rond de bank. Licon is minimalistisch met een warm karakter.
Licon is a light object with a double life. During the day Licon serves as a seat, whereas when the night falls, it reveals its second function as a light object. The light patterns in the concrete are illuminated and give the bench a vivid impression. This effect is obtained by integrating optical fibers in the concrete, bundling the fibers and illuminating them on one side. The remaining light is reflected, creating a peaceful ambient light around the bench. Licon is minimalistic with a warm character.

ZACK
ZACK is een product dat tegemoet komt aan de noden van daklozen in België. Het is een slaapconcept bestaande uit een rugzak met geïnte-greerde slaapzak. Een isolerende mat zorgt voor bescherming tegen de koude ondergrond wanneer de dakloze op straat slaapt. De slaapunit kan op een snelle en eenvoudige manier worden omgevormd tot een compacte rugzak waarin ze extra gerief kunnen opbergen. Op die manier kunnen ze zich verplaatsen zonder veel zakken met zich mee te hoeven dragen. ZACK is ondermeer vervaardigd uit een stevige nylon die zorgt voor een hoge levensduur en de gebruiker bovendien droog houdt op vochtige locaties.
ZACK is a product that meets the needs of homeless people in Belgium. It is a concept consisting of a backpack with integrated sleeping bag. An insulat-ing mat provides protection from the cold surface when the homeless sleeps on the street. The sleep unit can quickly and easily be transformed into a compact backpack in which they can store their belongings. This avoids the homeless to carry many different bags. ZACK is made of a firm nylon en-suring a long lifecycle and keeps the user dry when he lies on moist places.

HYDE: A BIN CONCEPT
HYDE is een nieuw concept van vuilnisemmer waarbij de problemen rond vuilnisemmers worden opgelost door in te spelen op het gedrag van de gebruiker in plaats van de fysische problemen op te lossen. Deze stevige en stijlvolle afvalemmer doet dit door zichzelf te sluiten en te ‘verbergen’ voor de gebruiker wanneer hij vol is. Door gebruik te maken van een klein mechanisme zal de afvalemmer de maximum toelaatbare hoeveelheid afval kunnen waarnemen. Dit zet een ander mechanisme in gang waardoor het deksel langzaam zal sluiten. Hierdoor zal de gebruiker eerder geneigd zijn een andere afvalemmer te zoeken in plaats van te proberen hun afval kwijt te spelen in iets dat niet direct aan een afvalemmer doet denken.
HYDE is a new dust-bin concept. Instead of trying to solve the many physical problems users have with dust bins, the problems get solved by letting the bin change according to the way users use them. This sturdy, smart look-ing dust bin does this by closing and “hiding” from the user when it’s full. Using a small mechanism, the bin will notice when the maximum tolerable amount of waste has been thrown inside. This triggers another mechanism which lets the bin close its lid softly. This will make the users search for an-other bin rather than trying to put their waste inside something that doesn’t remind them of a bin at first.

SOMNIA
Somnia doet ons denken aan dromen. Dit is ook juist wat de Somnia zal aanwakkeren bij de gebruiker. Door zijn vulling van lucht geeft hij het gevoel alsof je drijft op wolken. Hiernaast gaat hij ook nog de nieuwsgierig-heid gaan stimuleren. Op het eerste zicht lijkt de Somnia op een gewone opblaasbare ligzetel maar wanneer de gebruiker op de knoppen gaat drukken zal hij al snel merken dat de Somnia veel verborgen potentieel in zich heeft. Door te spelen en te testen ontdekt hij een totaal nieuwe wereld in opblaasbare meubelen. Door gebruik te maken van materialen die nog niet zijn toegepast bij opblaasbare meubelen (batyline, leer) verhoogt ook de luxe factor. Door deze materialen heeft de Somnia ook niet het uiterlijk van een opblaasbaar meubel.

Somnia makes us dream. This is precisely what the Somnia will encourage. Because the Somnia is filled with air, it feels like you are drifting on clouds. It also will stimulate curiosity. At first sight the Somnia seems an ordinary inflatable lounger but when the user is pressing the buttons, he will soon find out that the Somnia has much hidden potential. By playing and testing, the user will discover a whole new experience within the world of inflat-able furniture. By using materials that have not been applied to inflatable furniture yet (Batyline, leather), it will increase the luxury factor. The use of these materials also gives a different look that cannot be associated with inflatable furniture as we know it.

Klanten van Belle et Bien® vroegen steeds naar een goed product ter bescherming van gipsverbanden bij het baden en douchen. Door het analyseren van de bestaande producten werd al duidelijk dat het verbete-ren van deze producten niet evident zou zijn. Door gebruik te maken van een functieanalyse werden deeloplossingen gevonden voor elke functie. Uiteindelijk werden combinaties van deze deeloplossingen in prototypes uitgewerkt en zo is men dan tot het huidige product ‘Aqualeone’ gekomen. ‘Aqualeone’ vervult al de taken die het zou moeten vervullen en bovendien is het mogelijk om met ‘Aqualeone’ te zwemmen, dit vormt een niet te onderschatten meerwaarde voor het product.
Customers of Belle et Bien asked for a good product to protect their casts against water during showering or taking a bath. By analyzing the existing products it was seen that it wouldn’t be evident to optimize these prod-ucts. By using the Fast-diagram, solutions were found for each function. Combinations of these solutions were prototyped so the current concept ‘Aqualeone’ was born.‘Aqualeone’ is fulfilling the required functions and moreover it is possible to swim with ‘Aqualeone’, this feature is a high added value to the product.

USER-CENTERED BILIRUBINEMETER
Ziekenhuizen gaan in de nabije toekomst veel veranderen. Een pak nieuwe meettechnologieën worden op punt gesteld. Deze bilirubinemeter is hier een voorbeeld van. Met dit toestel kan men geelzucht bij pasgeborenen gaan opsporen zonder dat er bloed moet getrokken worden. Maar als zie-kenhuizen meer gaan digitaliseren en meer “handheld” toestellen krijgen, welke impact zal dat dan hebben op de gebruiker? Deze bilirubinemeter werd samen met het verplegend personeel ontworpen, met aandacht voor zowel de interactie, de vorm als de userinterface om zo te komen tot een user-centered ontwerp waarbij de noden van de verpleegster en de veran-deringen in de omgeving centraal staan.
Hospitals will drastically change in the near future. Lots of new technologies are being perfected. This bilirubin meter is an example of such technology. With this device jaundice can be tracked without taking a blood sample. But if hospitals digitalise strongly and more handheld devices are introduced, what impact will this have on the user? This bilirubin meter has been de-veloped in close co-operation with the nursing staff, in terms of interaction, shape and user interface. This is how this user centred bilirubin meter has come about. It responds to the needs of both the nurses and the changing environment!

Deze masterproef kwam tot stand in samenwerking met Procter & Gamble. De onderzoeksvraag werd gesteld door de productieafdeling van de Pringles chips, heeft betrekking op de shingling techniek en bestaat uit twee delen. Shingling is een techniek die tijdens het productieproces aange-wend wordt om de chips van een horizontale positie naar een verticale te verplaatsen. Dit gebeurt door de zogenaamde shingling guide. Dit proces verloopt niet altijd feilloos waardoor de productielijn regelmatig vastloopt en grote aantallen chips zich in een spoedtempo opstapelen.Het eerste deel van deze masterproef omschrijft het ontwerpproces van een handgereedschap dat de werknemers moet helpen de chips op een snelle, ergonomische en veilige manier van de productielijn te verwijderen.In het tweede deel wordt op zoek gegaan naar een conceptuele aanpassing aan de productielijn, die deze problematiek moet verhelpen.
This thesis was created in collaboration with Procter & Gamble.The research question was posed by the production department of the Pringles chips and distinguishes two parts within the thesis.Both parts stand in relation with the same problem: shingling.Shingling is a technique used halfway along the production line to shift the chips from a horizontal to a vertical position. This is done by the shingling guide. The technique used is not flawless and causes regular jams in the production line. In case of a jam, chips quickly gather together which can cause the production to stop. The first part of this thesis describes the design of a hand tool that should enable the employee to clear a jam in a fast, ergonomic and safe manner.In the second part, we are looking for an adjustment that can be made to the production line to solve the problem of shingling all together.

Het handvat bevat ook een unieke sleutel waarmee de connection clip wordt aangespannen om zo 2 afsluitingen te verbinden. Een handeling die een pak minder arbeidsintensief blijkt dan het aanbrengen van de huidige connectors. Na het plaatsen van de hekken in de gerecycleerde PVC blokken kan er meer stabiliteit en gewicht bekomen worden door de nieuwe module toe te voegen. Het eindwerk is een volledige ‘INNOWIZ methodologie’ case.
Tempofor U is an update of the current temporary fencing of Betafence. With the focus on the end user who has to set up the fence, this concept includes three products. A handle can be used while moving the fences, which prevents injuries. This handle has a unique key that can be used to tighten the connection clip and joining two fences in one act, making it far less laborintensive than fixing the current connectors. After placing the fences in the recycled PVC blocks, more stability and weight can be added by placing the new module. The thesis is a complete ‘INNOWIZ methodology’ case.

HYPAR is a parasol designed for use in the hotel and catering industry. The purpose is to relax and refresh during hot summer days. It is not the intention to use big pieces of textile to block all the sunshine.In HYPAR the shadow is created by stretching narrow pieces of fabric between an aluminum frame. The woven strips block the bigger part of the sunlight. The produced shadow shows a playful variation of intensity. In gen-eral the product creates a pleasant atmosphere. The wind can escape between the bands of textile leaving the structure unaffected. Therefore HYPAR is more wind-resistant than the classical over-arm umbrellas. The product structure is defined addressing the usability, assembly and the price.

Dit is een leeslichtje dat het mogelijk maakt (hoofdzakelijk voor schoolgaande kinderen) om te lezen en te werken lang nadat de zon is ondergegaan. Het licht is afkomstig van LED’s en werkt in combinatie met een uniforme lichtverdeler. Door te draaien aan de knop krijg je 10 minuten een mooi egaal verlicht oppervlak op uw pagina. With solar cells and their capabilities as the main focus of this project, a computer is developed. With the main focus on solar cells, the computer is rethought as an application for these cells. By designing an autonomous laptop that combines virtualization with an enormous freedom of movement, a clear extra value is added to the aver-age laptops. Het eindproduct, eVa, is een koker die aan de muur wordt bevestigd. Bij een noodsituatie wordt de koker omgevormd tot een mat die dan effectief dienst doet als evacuatieproduct. Deze is hanteerbaar met minimum één begeleider en maximum vier kinderen van 0 tot 18 maanden, op zowel de begane grond als op de trap. Daar de mat volledig symmetrisch is, kan de mat eveneens door twee personen worden gehanteerd en is verwarring uitgesloten aan welke kant de begeleider de mat moet voorttrekken.
From CKO De Koepel, center for child care Kortrijk, the question came to develop an evacuation product for child cares which evacuates as many children as possible with the assistance of a minimum number of educators.
The final product, eVa, is a tube which is fixed on the wall on several strategic places at the daycare center. When an emergency occurs, the tube transforms into a mat which effectively serves as evacuation product. The mat is usable with a minimum of one educator and four children of 0 to 18 months and can be used on the floor and on stairs. Because the mat is symmetrical, confusion is impossible. The product can also be used with two educators.

De ExtruSpher 4M8-Trix is een redesign van een Extruder/Spheronizer, een machine die gebruikt wordt om onderzoek te doen naar de productie van pellets in chemische laboratoria. Deze pellets kunnen bijvoorbeeld gebruikt worden om tabletten te persen of om op te slaan in gelatinecapsules. Dankzij de modulariteit van verschillende onderdelen en de transparante uitstraling van de machine; is de laborant in staat het proces beter te leren begrijpen en hieruit nieuwe producten te ontwikkelen. Om in te spelen op het gebruiksgemak en de ergonomie, zijn tal van handelingen vereen-voudigd en kan de ExtruSpher 4M8-TRix gecombineerd worden met reeds bestaande machines van het bedrijf.
The ExtruSpher 4M8-Trix is a redesign of an Extruder/Spheronizer, a ma-chine that can be used to perform research in the production of pellets in chemical laboratories. These pellets can be used, for example, to compress tablets or to store in gelatin capsules. Thanks to the modularity of different parts and the transparent look of the machine, the user is able to understand the production process in a better way, which can lead to the development of new innovative products. To respond to the ease of use of the machine, different handlings where simplified and the ExtruSpher can be combined with other products of the company.
