LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Welcome to the 92

nd Hazel Grove Musical Festival.

I am delighted to have taken on the role of Chairman and I am looking forward to my first Festival.

There have been many changes over the past year and thanks go to all the people who have retired and a big welcome to our new

committee members who have made this event possible.

Gordon Nightingale

Chairman

JOHN RICHES

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of John Riches in May last year after a short illness,

John joined the Hazel Grove Music Festival as a Committee member in 1998, assisting in various Committee roles. In 2002 he

became the Vocal Competitors’ Secretary, a job he undertook for the following ten years before becoming the Festival Chairman

until his death in May 2018.

During his long association with the Festival, and particularly in his Vocal Secretary role, he became a firm friend to count less

competitors both young and old. Above all was his own boundless enthusiasm and the encouragement he gave to others to

engage in singing. This was so apparent in the number of persons who attended his funeral service and a fitting testimony to the

person that he was.

His own particular involvement in Male Voice Choirs led to many an invitation to compete in our own Festival's Choral

Championship Class. To John this event was the highlight of the Festival. He always thought that a programme of Mixed,

Ladies and Male Voices, singing in friendly competition against each other, gave such enjoyment to both competitors and their

audience alike and really embodied the Festival movement.

It is particularly appropriate that in memory of John, the family has kindly donated a Memorial Shield in his name and this will

be awarded each year to the winner of the Choral Championship Class.

Light refreshments (hot and cold drinks, crisps and cakes) will be available, but competitors, volunteers and audience

members are welcome to bring their own lunches and snacks.

Hazel Grove has a number of shops and coffee lounges where sandwiches and hot food can be purchased; these include:
