1964 geboren in Apeldoorn

Beeldtaal

Meaning of Reality Or: Looking outside in My work is based on the thought of reality. Reality does not exist as itself, but only in the eye of the beholder. Nowadays most images of reality are already captured for an archetypical idea of reality. These images are the interpretation of the realism around us; the touchable reality. I want to create an untouchable reality by using the same known images of reality, but use them for creating an inner, thought, reality. (Just like the “first Creator”, I try to materialize thoughts: …and the word was made flesh…, John 1:14). My work is looking outside to the inner world… For this I’m using the archetypical, recognizable images of reality and reload them with my own ideas of what could be an inner reality. All kinds of images are usable for sampling and combining; images from newspapers, other paintings, movie stills, nineteenth century photography, book illustrations, old prints, etc, etc, as long as it is already a two dimensional interpretation of reality. First of all I paint a background which is identifiable and not disturbing, which is comfortable to look at. After this I interpret this painted world as a stage on which the inside story can take place. The actors are made of linoleum prints that are first printed on transparent sheets, so I can check the best place on the stage, by moving them around until they are at their right spot to load up the image with the new meaning. Then I fix the whole thing by printing the linoleum cut on the canvas. By building my paintings this way I want to create a double world in which the painted background functions as the overall atmosphere, the “feeling” and the outlined, printed figures, like drawing or writing, as the meaning, the “knowing”. So it’s not clear if the printed figure is an idea of the viewer, by looking at the painted reality, or if the painted reality is an idea of the printed figure. So the question becomes: is the viewer inside or outside the painting? Are you in the real world or do you figure yourself in the real world? My work is a combination of romantic painting by the end of the nineteenth century (Casper David Friedrich, etc) and the surrealistic movement in the beginning of the twentieth century (De Chirico, etc), but translated of course to nowadays standard. Comic strips always have been of influence for my work (Robert Crumb) and by this the paintings of Philip Guston. Works of Morandi, for its deep, inner world. In nineteenth century photography I see a archetypical world that’s still recognizable by almost everyone in the western world (woman with long hair and dresses and man having beards an wearing hats).

We still accept these images as a concept of inside reality; they have become symbols for something. My inspiration also comes from country and blues music in which I see a connection in the fatalistic and deterministic view of reality. My paintings should look like a good sounding song with disturbing lyrics…

Press Releases (2008)

Versloot’s pictures notoriously oscillate between the real and surreal. First, they trigger a pleasant feeling of familiarity, often followed by a sudden upsurge of awkward loneliness or anxiety. His pictures are like a “Trojan horse” that intrude our minds by the initial but short cunning pleasure for the eye. An unsettling strangeness supersedes immediately, however, it repels us but simultaneously tempts us to enter the picture. Thick brush strokes of black paint create mysterious shadows. An icy white and a dark, uncanny wood-green mostly dominate the palette of colours. The inspirations for the depicted scenery sometimes stems from movie settings but in Versloot’s mise-en-scènes, the background only serves as the setting for his inner story. The imagery springs from his inner dreams, is determined by the subconscious and his version of reality only becomes concrete in different layers of acrylic paint on canvas. The characters depicted seem to be a void, empty, lacking any individuality and emotion. As hyaline, fragile figures they pose in the mysterious setting, somehow out of place. Does the background only exist in the figure’s imagination? Or is the figure only a product by the spectator’s mind? Versloot’s paintings suggest a reality, which is only illusion. Imbuing his paintings with a certain feel of fading memories, latent dreams and individual versions of reality, Versloot conjures up individual thoughts, fantasies or memories in us, he evokes scenes of a maybe almost forgotten or suppressed past. Versloot once claimed “Reality does not exist as itself, but only in the eye of the beholder.” In some of his new works, Versloot has even become more serious about the actual procedures and techniques of painting. Scratches on ice are realized by real engravings in the acrylic layer. Moreover, some of his new paintings seem to be devoted to our contemporary “copy-and-paste” culture. By misusing the canvas itself as material, the actual, concrete painting is transformed into the artistic playground. Versloot cuts figures out of the canvas, which are converted into templates, glued somewhere else, apparently randomly at a different spot on the painting. The black, faceless silhouettes in Going round seem to float in front of the green picture plane, unrelated to the oversized record player they surround. Copy, paste, copy, paste, copy, paste… The person reproduces himself but neither of these parts discloses his true identity. Because there is no single identity. How do you see yourself? How do you want to be seen by others? How do others actually see you? As there is no answer, Versloot continues to let his pictures roil with unrest. Ronald Versloot (1964) was born in Appeldorn (NL). He studied at the Koninklijke Akademie voor Kunst en Vormgeving in Den Bosch (1982-1987) and at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam (1987-1990). In 1993, he was awared the Jeanne Oosting Price. Ronald Versloot lives and works in Amsterdam.

(2012) In his works Versloot investigates the figure-ground problem: the relationship between the figure and the background and how to drive the division of the two into its extreme . While Versloot combined linocuts with acrylic paint in his previous works, in his new works Versloot uses spray paint to enhance the solitude of the figures, which never seem to fit into their surroundings. More than this, they seem to either float in the foreground or disappear into the background, hereby recalling pictures of ghostly apparitions. As only their silhouettes are shown, they lack all form of individuality. This is a trait they seem to share with their surroundings. Instead of painting specific places, Versloot is more focused on the memory or feeling of a place. The story of the paintings never become clear – purposefully perhaps. Versloot likes to seduce the viewer to enter a world of narratives which seem to float in this void. Ronald Versloot (1964, Apeldoorn, NL) studied at the Koninklijke Akademie voor Kunst en Vormgeving in Den Bosch and at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. He has had shows at .a.o: GAD Galleri, Oslo, Freies Museum, Berlin , Galleri S.E. , Bergen, Norway, Galerie Andreas Brüning, Düsseldorf, Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam, Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, and several times at AKINCI and galerie Maurits van de Laar, The Hague. In 1993 Ronald Versloot received the Jeanne Oosting Prize.
