Morningstar Atlas duurzaamheid landenAfgelopen oktober lanceerde Morningstar een serie atlassen van de duurzaamheid van landen op basis van de ESG score van bedrijven in hun hoofdindices. Prachtige plaatjes met overall: MorningstarSustainabilityMap (Portugal, Denmarken, Nederland en een Noord/West Europess feestje) Overall wordt sterk beïnvloed door controversies. Blik op winnaar PORTUGALBij Morningstar wint Portugal, een kleine index van 13 bedrijven volgens Morningstar*, door een lage controversy score. NB De Portugese hoofdindex heet de PSI-20 dat suggereert 20 bedrijven, volgens Euronext zitten er 18 bedrijven in: Indices/PSI-20* Sommige bedrijven lijken er 2 keer in te zitten**.

Interessant omdat het een Eurozone land is en samenwerkt met Euronext. Er zitten veel energie bedrijven in de PSI-20: ook Galp Energia Nom, fossil fuel hoezo geen controverse?, maar supercool EDP dat productie, verkoop en distributie van elektriciteit (88,5%): waterkracht, thermo, wind, warmtekrachtkoppeling en biomassa en nog meer renewable energy door EDP renovable EDP Renováveis gespecialiseerd in de productie van elektriciteit uit duurzame (wind) energie. **Volgens CSRHUb is EDP , 77.5% aandeelhouder in EDPR. REN - Redes Energéticas Nacionais is gespecialiseerd in de exploitatie en het beheer onder licentie van het Portugese transportnetwerk voor elektriciteit (en aardgas 30%).

Verder ALTRIGSP dat papierpulpproductie, bosbeheer en duurzame energie opwekt. 81,2% van de omzet wordt in het buitenland gerealiseerd. SEMAPA verkoopt mn papier en pulp en TheNavigator, verkoopt ook papier en producteert bosbouwproducten: voornamelijk electriviteit uit biomassa en hout. Nederland Nederland doet leuk mee bij Morningstar, 2e bij overall. Onze AEX is lekker schizofreen met duurzame darling Unilever als zwaarste onderneming met 14,98% en dan fossil fuel Shell met 14,18%***. Bijna elk AEX bedrijf zit in de Dow Jones Sustainability Index, zelfs Shell weer dat er uit gekieperd was vanwege de lucht-, water- en landvervuiling in Nigeria. Zolang Shell geen echte inzet toont op renewable energy doet dit wel wat afbreuk aan de reputatie van Sustainability Indices. Shell zit ook in FTSE4Good, de Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index (!?) en GoldmanSachs Sustain ESG rankings. Morningstar dat nu ook de duurzaamheid van beleggingsfondsen beoordeelt introduceerde de Morningstar Sustainability Index Series. 25 indices voor 'duurzaam beleggen via transparante benchmarks'. 10 regional, waaronder de Eurozone, 4 EmergingMarkets en 7 single countries, niet Nederland. Vraag en kostenVolgens Morningstar vraagt de markt 'om benchmark-gekoppelde instrumenten met een duurzaam karakter', Matt Gries, Morningstar Indexes Director of New Product Development en …. 'Daar hoort volgens ons ook een instrument bij met lage kosten, lage omzet en hoge transparantie.' Hear hear

ExclusiveMorningstar biedt de Index Series 'vooralsnog' alleen aan via zijn professionele platforms en (nog) niet via de Morningstar website-tools. ImpactAlpha, een interessante e-nieuwsbrief had een artikel over impact investing 'read this if you re not a zillionaire, impact investing for the rest of us ofwel inclusive #impinv. Omdat het voor de Amerikaanse markt is zijn de voorbeelden niet erg interessant of inclusive, maar de genoemde fintech platforms zijn dat wel. Ik neem 2 paragrafen over:

Going ForwardDistributing retail impact products through intermediaries remains a very time-consuming and costly process requiring financial advisor education, building product and manager track records. The growth in crowdfunding platforms and a trend towards greater automatization of the investment process can make it easier and less costly for retail investors toget engaged.

The advent of robo-advisors can make sustainable and impact investing less costly than going through a human financial advisor by automating the process and using algorithms to invest according to a customer’s preferences. In fact, robo-advisors offering sustainable investment options already exist. IEX Profs interviewt BlackrockBlackrock ziet ESG integratie nog vooral als een risk beperking strategie maar kijkt wel verder. Monique Donders ''Alle letters ESG moeten een positieve bijdrage leveren. Impact beleggingen kunnen buersgenoteerde aandelen zijn – bijvoorbeeld clean tech of infrastructuur – maar vaak zit er een illiquide aspect aan. Denk aan social en green bonds. Microfinanciering, waar veel belangstelling voor is onder particulieren. TRANSPARENCY & METRICS

Global Reporting Initiative SRSIn Amsterdam is 19okt de nieuwste versie van het Global Reporting Iniatiative gelanceerd. GRI is een initaitief voor meer voor Transparantie over niet financiele prestaties van bedrijven, hun ESG impact. With thousands of reporters in over 90 countries, GRI provides the world’s most widely used standards on sustainability reporting and disclosure, enabling businesses, governments, civil society and citizens to make better decisions based on information that matters. In fact, 92% of the world’s largest 250 corporations report on their sustainability performance. Op de database pagina staat: 9,892 Organizations, 36,131 Reports en 24,733 GRI Reports (ook met oudere GRI 123 versies).De nieuwste versie heet de GRI Sustainability Reporting Standards en vervangt vanaf medio 2018 de GRI 4.0 versie. The GRI Sustainability Reporting Standards will enable companies around the world to be more transparent about their impacts on the economy, the environment and society. They will also help organizations make better decisions and contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Simpele Metrics & SDGsThe Investment Leaders Group (ILG) is een internationaal netwerk van 10 grote investeerders: pensioenfondsen, verzekeraars en asset managers. De leden hebben hun hoofdkantoor in de VS, Zwitserland, het VK, Denemarken, Duitsland, Noorwegen, Zuid Afrika en Australië. Het initiatief is gestart in 2013 en werkt samen met het Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) en wordt ondersteund door academici van de University of Cambridge.

ILG produceert flink wat publications en research, mijn oog viel op 'In search of impact, measuring the full value of capital en dan vooral vanwege de genoemde basisbehoeften en de drie sociale thema's op de cover: -1- Food, water, shelter, sanitation scurity and basic freedom for all; -2- Enhancing health, education & justice equality & opportunity for all; -3-secure socially inclusive jobs and working conditions for all. Geen termen die je veel tegenkomt in bobo beleggings communicatie... Er zijn ook 3 milieu thema's en samengevat door ILG gaat het om: proxies chosen for their intrinsic relevance to people and society – jobs, health, poverty, climate, nature and resources.

SDG's en simple impact metricsDe doorslag gaf de directe verwijzing in de toelichting naar de UN's Sustainable Development Goals, want sinds dit voorjaar roep ik op om SDG bonds te ontwikkelen die dan hopelijk net zo'n snelle opmars maken als Green Bonds. It takes as its starting point the recently adopted United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and converts them through a careful process of clustering, prioritisation and simplification into a set of six impact metrics for investors. zo doen ze het: NB Er zijn 17 SDG's, doel 16 en 17 betreffen (supranationaal) overheidsbeleid en facilitering van duurzaamheid en het bereiken van de SDG's.

De 6 thema's worden met een 3 stappen aanpak en kwantitatieve meting beoordeeld: • Base: a quantitative measure of the impact on an asset (or fund) across its life cycle. • Stretch: an enhanced measure to be implemented when the required data becomes available. • Ideal: an enhanced measure allowing comparison of performance with the level required by the relevant SustainableDevelopment Goal(s).

De impact/bijdrage wordt in een 5-punts schaal gepresenteerd: Highly positive contribution, Positive contribution Limited to no contribution, Negative contribution en Highly negative contribution.

Voorbeeld: werkWerkgelegenheid in de private sector speelteen belangrijke rol in het voorzien inbasisbehoeften, tegengaan van ongelijkheiden werkeloosheid. Dit thema meet de bijdragevan investeringen aan 'secure, sociallyinclusive jobs and working conditions for all'.

De Base metric: Total number of direct jobs,adjusted for national rates of unemploymentand vulnerable employment, per $m. De 'base' meet niet de kwaliteit van het werkof het werk bij toeleveranciers. Het volgendeniveau 'stretch' heeft een vijf jaar horizon.De Stretch metric: Total number of jobs,direct and contracted, with compensationabove 60 per cent of the national medianwage, adjusted for national rates ofunemployment and vulnerable employment,

per $m. De 60% is een door de OESO gehanteerde norm. Contracted werk is het werk dat in de keten wordt gecreëerd zonder direct dienst-verband bij de investee.

De Ideal metric: Total number of jobs, direct and indirect (contracted workers and suppliers acting on behalf of the company or manufac-turing its branded products, plus jobs sustained through products/services), in formal open-endedcontracts with compensation above the living wage, adjusted for national rates of unemployment and vulnerable employment, per $m. Met een lange(re) tijdshorizon en oppassen voor dubbeltellingen. NB Median wage, gemiddeld loon is hier vervangen door living wage: a more sophisticated measure designed to address differences in standards of living and household sizes across countries.

Dit model met de base metric is toegepast op CAC40, de Franse index en die komt er niet al te best af:

CAC40 contribution to decent work Job intensity 4.6 jobs/$m Normal job intensity (no unemployment rate adjustment) 3.4 jobs/$m Categorisation Very low contribution to decent work.

European Impact Investing Luxemburg Afgelopen mei is het European Impact Investment Luxemburg opgericht, an open initiative supported by a group of Luxembourg-based firms in the financial services sector that seeks to:

• Contribute to the development of the impact investing sector; • Facilitate initiatives in this area within Luxembourg; • Promote the Luxembourg's financial centre's capacity to support a coordinate practice of impact finance;

The European Impact Investing Luxembourg wants to play the role of an impartial information exchange platform between stakeholders of the impact investing space. Its activity is currently structured in five working groups:

Crowdfunding: In the perspective of limiting the risks for the actors, the European Union is currently building the foundations of a European framework for crowdfunding so that its development will be regulated and harmonised in Europe. In Luxembourg no legal framework is yet available but a national specific law would surely position the countryas a first choice jurisdiction for the implementation of crowdfunding platforms.Blogger: Dat crowdfunding is opgenomen is opvallend, dat ben ik nog nooit tegengekomen bij impact investing publicaties. Impact Measurement

Foundations The sector represents a large amount of worldwide assets available for social purposes which could position foundations as key actors in the field of impact investing.

Traditionally foundations have a structure axed on two levels. On one side they invest their endowments and resources so that they fructify their capital and on the other side they give a percentage of their capital as grants and donations.

There was a progressive change of mind within the foundations, progressively integrating new approaches to improve their charity work. In integrating their for-profit investment activities with their grant making activities in a mission-related investment approach, foundations have evolved substantially if compared to their original modus operandi.Blogger: Nederlandse chari's?
