A New Year in HadassahTHe BOARD’s MessAGe

Dear Chapter MeMbers,The unusually early Hanukkah this year made for the first day of the Festival of Lights and Thanksgiving occurring on the same date. We hope your candles burned brightly, your latkes were yummy and were served with the cranberry sauce which accompanied the turkey. We were here for a rare convergence of the two and will surely not be present when it occurs again in the year 79,811.

Our chapter has much to celebrate. Under the leadership of Carol Toobin and Valerie Frost, and with an outstanding Board, it has been a great year. A very generous membership has enabled us to meet the highest quota our chapter has ever been assigned. Programming has been outstanding. Three programs come to mind: From Darkness to Light, the music of Kurt Weill, sung by Robert Sinn, piano accompaniment by David Geist. Thank you Linda Krull for your underwriting and Sheila Gershen for your arranging for this sold out program. Our Membership Tea at the home of Joan and Jeff Less was another well attended event and the Annual Luncheon at La Posada was fabulous. Kudos to Lisa and Joan. Mah Jongg lunches also helped raise money. Carol Toobin, please promise to keep the cookies and rugelach coming. Every additional program has been special with interesting speakers.

So, our calendar year comes to a close and we begin to plan for 2014. The chapter will be headed by a presidium, Reggie Klein, Sandra Levine and Susan Feiner. We will meet often to make sure we are on top of things and will likely take turns conducting meetings or writing for the news letter. We will stay in touch with our DMR region and try to attend conferences. Lisa Sinoff and I are already planning to attend the winter conference in Tucson in mid December. Our board is outstanding and we look forward to a successful year.

Please plan to attend our events and to support our chapter financially. Hadassah and Israel need us all. Have a wonderful new year and may 2014 bring us good health and a more enlightened and peaceful world.

santa Fe Chapter of Hadassah wants to thank our long-time member Nora Segal for her recent $10,000

contribution.  This contribution is slated to benefit Youth Aliyah-Children at Risk.  Nora has been a strong supporter of Hadassah and Jewish causes for many years.  

Since she arrived in Santa Fe over 30 years ago, she has actively supported the growing Jewish community.  In recent years her generosity made possible the outdoor lighting at Congregation beit Tikva,  and she underwrote the cost of the ark there also.  A recent large donation there will also be commemorated in the naming of a soon-to-be constructed office for the rabbi in their new addition.  For those who do not know Nora, she made an art form of careful and creative shopping that benefited friends and family for many years.  She is one of our stalwart supporters.  Thank you, Nora!

Fall program in Review

Mel brooks and Joe papp in the Wings

thIs DeCeMber, the Santa Fe Jewish Film Festival is starting a new Christmas Day tradition: Flix & Chopstix. This year features a double header of two Mel Brooks classics, followed by Chinese food catered by Yummy’s, all at CCA! The fun begins on Wednesday, December 25 at 2:00 pm with the double feature and dinner after the second film.

In JanUary, New York comes to Santa Fe with Joe Papp in Five Acts. Described as “an admiring portrait about a transformative figure” by the Hollywood Reporter, this Tribeca Film Festival favorite shines a light on one of the most important figures in contemporary theater. An optional lox & bagel brunch precedes the screening, and there will be copies of the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle to make this

Hadassah was one of the sponsors for the SFJFF Cinema Cafe coffee at the home of Marcia Torobin on November 20th. Eyal Shechter, Israeli actor in the movie “The Matchmaker” and musician was the special guest. “The Matchmaker” was part of the first Israeli Film Festival in Santa Fe.

We want to see everyone at our Sunday brunch and Installation of Officers on December 22. Hopefully NO SNOW this year.

Congregation Beit Tikva is sponsoring an eleven day tour of Israel.

Travel to the land of Israel in May 2014 with  Rabbi Martin Levy, guide Yossi dagan, and a host of Santa Feans. Congregation beit Tikva is sponsoring an eleven day tour of Israel, including all the wondrous sites of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa, Safed, and the Galilee.

HADAssAH AliyAH CHilDReN AT Risk

Hadassah has long been involved with youth oriented projects. Because of the push in recent

years to finish the new hospital tower, these projects have not received much publicity here in Santa Fe. The following are outstanding facilities that we have supported for many years.

In 1923 the Meir Shfeya Youth Village was founded in the Carmel Mountains near Zichron Yaakov. It was a project of Junior Hadassah until 1956, when responsibility for it was transferred to our national organization. From the beginning it was involved with the absorption and education of new immigrants, as well as trying to provide services to Israeli youth requiring special services. They have 300 residential students and another 250 day students. The facilities include a junior and a senior high school, a library, computer labs, dorms, a dining room, a gymnasium, a synagogue, staff housing, a dairy, a chicken farm, a greenhouse, an organic, experimental farm, vineyards and orchards. They have sports facilities, a modern performing arts center that holds 500 people, an amphitheater, and a music center. They are home to the Shfeya Mandolin Orchestra and host numerous local and national musical andculturalactivities.Ithasanarts-center reputation in the lower Galilee.

In 2002 they opened a special program for outstanding students in nearby communities in physics, biology, and math. They also participateinaprojectforunder-achievingstudentsingrades9-12thatprovides enrichment designed to help them pursue higher education.

In recent years they have taken onmoreEnglish-speakingstudents,

helping them to acquire Hebrew language skills and keep up in their Hebrew-languagesubjectareaclasses.Theynowconstitute10-20%ofthestudent body.

In 2005 their winery began operation and produced its first run of 5,000 bottles of premium wine in 2007. It’s run by a staff of 11th and 12th graders under the supervision of the agricultural director and a local wine maker. This wine is now for sale in the duty free shop at Ben Gurion Airport.

In 2001 Shfeya received the prestigious “President’s Award for Excellence in Education” from President Ezer Weitzman.

Hadassah Neurim Youth VillageThisfacilityisco-ownedwiththeJewish Agency. It has 400 students, evenly split between boarding students and day students. It was established in 1948 to serve pupils evacuated from the Ben Shemen agricultural village during the War of Independence. Some of the recently incorporated projects include therapeutichorse-backridingforthephysically disabled, a soccer program sponsored by Maccabi Netanya, and anOlympic-sizedtrackdesignedespecially for the talented youngsters from Ethiopia.

Neurim is often the school of last resort for students who have failed to succeed in other schools. By the time a student is admitted here they may have been through 3 or 4 otherschools,havelowself-esteem,have a history of poor scholastic achievement, and may suffer from learning disabilities. They offer a wide range of tracks, from vocational to academic, and have social workers

and counselors along with teachers on staff. They have a support center where students are taught in small groups and individual learning needs are addressed. The school provides strategies for helping to mainstream the students. Computers are a big part of the process.

The student athletes from Neurim are among the top performers on the international circuit and have participated at the Olympics level.Youcanfinda5-minutevideoon

Ramat Hadassah Szold Youth Aliyah VillageThis village is located near Haifa, outside of Kiryat Tivon. They have over300pupilsaged12-18.AbouthalfareIsraeli-born,theotherimmigrants, mostly from the former Soviet Union and Ethiopia. The school was originally founded by Henrietta Szold in 1949 to serve as a home for young holocaust survivors. Many of their students had troubles elsewhere, so in addition to regular classroom work they get tutoring in small groups. Formal teaching is also supplemented by a range of extracurricular activities designed to buildself-confidence.Theseincludearts and crafts, work on the animal farm, and again, a highly popular therapeutic horseback riding program run by a certified veterinarian and attendedweeklyby60-70students.They also have a cinema program, and are creating both actors and filmmakers. They emphasize education for values, with special volunteerprogramsandapre-armypreparatory program.

So we sponsor the Hadassah Academic College, which is the only accredited academic institution in downtown Jerusalem. It was started in 1970. It has special programs to help bridge the gap for students who do not have all the necessary requirements for major universities. They also work with older students to help develop research and critical thinking skills in preparation for future academic work.

There is a real emphasis on providing skills that allow the students to get professional jobs after graduation.90%ofthegraduateslanda job in their field within 6 months after graduation. About half of the students are the first in their family to achieve higher education. The major academic programs they offer

are computer science, industrial design and communication, management, and health and life sciences. They have 4 community outreach clinics as well. These are eye, audiology, speech and aphasia clinics.

In 2014 they are going to initiate anEnglish-languagesummerprogramof study. Each course will be worth 3 credit hours, and they will work to ensure the smooth transfer of the credits to the home university. Course offerings include: politics and communications, environment and ecology, hospitality, and photography. Detailed information about that is comingon-lineinSeptember,2013.

There is a nice video on the college on the Hadassah web page showing

graduates talking about their college experience. In the class of 2012 there were 350 graduates. Also, the mayor of Jerusalem talked about the importance of bringing young people into the heart of the city and having an institution such as ours there.

About half the student body is on financial aid, so they are always looking for donations to help out.

How fitting it is that Hanukkah and Thanksgiving coincide. The messages of religious freedom and gratefulness of both holidays complement each

other. So whether you served latke sweet potato with your turkey, or cornbread with your donuts, this was a special time in our lives.

Of course, this has even greater meaning for Hadassah, which has been rebuilding Jerusalem like the Maccabees for 100 years. Amidst the celebration, a deep and meaningful message has been our charge to carry forward for the last five generations of Jewish women, who—according to tradition—started the revolution against the oppressor in ancient times.

What does the word “Hanukkah” mean? It’s the word we use to dedicate a new building, the “housewarming” of a

home. Related to the holiday, we celebrate the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem and remember the original dedication of the ancient Temples. The light of the candles are both the light of the ancient menorah and the light of our future. Like the past, this requires dedication and commitment. So amidst the partying and celebration, this is an ideal time to recommit to Hadassah and our values.

Just last year we used the word Hanukkah for the dedication of the Sarah Wetsman Davidson Tower.

HadaSSaH NurSe BriNgS LigHt iN tHe PHiLiPPiNeSIf Ruven Gelfond’s name sounds familiar, it’s because he was in charge of the Israel field hospital in Haiti. It was Ruven who turned surgical nails into surgical screws to repair mangled hips.

He wouldn’t have been a nurse today if Hadassah hadn’tprovidedacoursetoretrainnon-degreemedicalprofessionals from the former Soviet Union when he made Aliyah from Soviet Georgia.Todayheisthemuch-heraldednurseinchargeof

surgery at Hadassah’s Mount Scopus operating theater and known internationally for his skill at running field hospitals under the toughest conditions.

I was able to catch him almost every day on his cell phone in Bogo City, which seems miraculous in itself. He was serving as an IDF officer in the poor city of 70,000 residents where provincial officials say as many as 90 percent of buildings were damaged by winds and rain. Crops were flattened and roads were blocked.

The IDF Rescue team treated 2686 patients. Many were trauma patients, injured by the typhoon, but others suffered chronic health problems and need of modern medicine.

You might say the team was going back to Hadassah’s roots,whenwefirstbroughtmodernmedicinetoapre-State Israel. A century of commitment, from generation to generation in partnership with the Israeli spirit has made Israeli the medical, biotechnology force that it is.

Whom did Ruven see in the ER? Women with high risk pregnancies who need caesarian sections are too far from larger provincial centers to get there on time. One woman was bleeding to death from an ectopic pregnancy when the militarymedicalteamsavedher.Atwo-yearoldboywithclub foot will now be able to walk. A man with a detached ear will now be able to hear.

When the word went out that the Israeli team was able to bring sight to the blind. In fact, Gelfond managed to create the delicate tools needed debris and growths in blind eyes. More blind patients began to arrive.

Ruven, 41, will be lighting the first candle at home with his wife Inna, also a nurse and children Yonatan and Sharon.

After 12 days of little sleep, tent sleeping in torrid damp conditions, working around the clock, he’s tired but feeling wonderful.

“We were bringing light to the impoverished, homeless people of Bogo City,” said Gelfond. “I feel proud that our small embattled country could cross the six hours of time zones and bring life and light to more good souls of this world.”

raMi FrOM BetHLeHeMMeet him on the 7th floor of the Bloomberg Mother and ChildCenteratHadassahEinKerem.Ahandsome,dark-haired boy in the high tech incubators of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. His “working name” is “Rami,” a

name used by both Arabs and Jews. He was found a few days old in a box in a street in Bethlehem. A bottle of milk was packed with him. Someone brought him to the Bethlehem Creche, a nearby orphanage which takes in abandoned newborns. Was this the child of a teenaged mom whose life would be at stake for shaming her family if her secret was found out? Or was it a family that discovered that there was something terribly wrong with their newborn son whose skin color was tinged with blue and who feared a life of crippling medical bills? “We’ll never know,”said Dr. Teresa Cilluffo , who is taking the place of a parent for him today and sitting by his side in the until. She is an Italian gastroenterologist who comes to Bethlehem to volunteer in the orphanage. “I came on a pilgrimage and lost my heart in Bethlehem. I was supposed to go back to Italy last week, but I changed my ticket to be here with him in Hadassah. The care is wonderful.” The nuns at the Creche brought Rami to Bethlehem’s Caritas hospital, where his condition was diagnosed as serious. He was born with coarctation of the aorta, narrowing of the major blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart to the body. Without corrective surgery he would die. “I received a call from the cardiologist and we said we’d find space for him as soon as possible,” said Dr. Eldad Erez, Hadassah’s pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon. “In a newborn, the heart is very small, the size of his fist. We plan out the surgery ahead of time and try to be as precise as possible. Rami’s surgery was a success and his prognosis is excellent.” Approximately 30 percent of the juvenile heart patients at Hadassah come from the West Bank and Gaza. Dr. Erez’s mother, also a physician, came to Israel on the Exodus 1947, the ship of Holocaust survivors intercepted by the Britishontheirwaytopre-StateIsrael.

He was born in Haifa. “I’m a father of four, and as a Dad, I feel particularly happy that a child that has started his life with the double obstacles of abandonment and a congenital heart defect will have a chance at a normal life.”
