MOVEMBERIt’s that time of year again when the upper lip grows a precarious amount of fuzz that’s an ode to the 1970s swag. While for many it is an instant lady repellant, it’s not all in vain – the annual fundraising month for men’s health issues ensures it is all for a good cause. Check nz.movember.com for more info.

2013 VODAFONE NZ MUSIC AWARDSThe glitz, the glamour and the Shortland Street stars are what we love about the NZ Music Awards. And the music, of course! This year, Shapeshifter and Aaradhna are the top nominees, while (predictably) Lorde makes an appearance for a number of awards, as does Fat Freddy’s Drop, Unknown Mortal Orchestra and The Phoenix Foundation.

WED 30 OCT

Part artist development, part event series, part digital product and so much more, the Red Bull Sound Select celebrates hard working artists, passionate fans, and the tastemakers that shape scenes. To celebrate the New Zealand launch, a special showcase is being held, curated by local music influencer Connor Nestor.

If you haven’t heard of Ekko Park, now is the perfect time to be introduced to the Auckland four-piece rock band. Described as “a ship captained by an Irishman and crewed by 3 Kiwis”, singer Joe had travelled the world before settling in here, where he teamed up with some Kiwi dudes to form a unique offering to our music scene.

Revelry are turning back time and getting down like it’s the 80’s this Halloween. Ghoulish drinks specials and prizes for best dressed are happening on the night. With DJ’s T Rice & Benn Morrison bringing your corpse to life, FrankenStyle!

Everyone loves a good cover – YouTube is full of people making a career out of fantastic covers. It’s not an unoriginal thought, in fact, it can take real skill to take a song and make it your own. The Miltones are a top Kiwi cover band, whose main goal is to get you up and dancing – trust us, you’ll want to!

Sherpa have just released a tasty new treat – their brand new single ‘Love Film’. These guys first captivated audiences with their colourful funk in 2012 with their debut album Lesser Flamingo. Celebrate Halloween with Sherpa and their three top-notch support acts Rackets, The Psychs and The Holts.

Dave Dobbyn, a recent Music Hall of Fame inductee, has been confirmed to join Hello Sailor for their Gluepot Reunion shows. Last year saw the first ever Reunion, where hundreds came to hear them play at two sold-out shows. And they had so much fun they are doing it all over again to form the supergroup with The Exponents & Hello Sailor hitting the stage.

Big in the ‘90s and still going strong, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony is an American hip-hop group from Cleveland, Ohio, whose raps made them a household name for their unique style. Of course, being in a hip-hop group doesn’t come without controversy, but reuniting in 2010 and delivering fresh nostalgia.

Celebrate the release of ABA’s latest offering, with over 60 artists and 50 tracks all mixed together by Optimus Gryme, featuring the man himself, MC Woody, CTFD [Calmthefvckdown], Frederick Crew & Ruffhouse Crew. It showcases why we have such a strong bass scene, including big names Shapeshifter, Tiki Taane, Optimus Gryme, The Upbeats and more.

Not content with one day of ghoulish behavior and wild nights, Golden Dawn is putting on a week-long rave of blood-thirsty music and drinks to satisfy even the hardcore Halloween fiend. It all about compulsory dress-ups, decoration overloads, candy in the punch, and a coffin-load of surprises. Includes Dr Crawley’s creep show, Spooky Sunday, The Cuda Sisters and more.

It seems kind of ironic or something celebrating a Pagan event at place called Chapel, but there you go. Come and celebrate the night of ghost, ghouls and spirits, thanks to Jagermeister. DJ Marina Katerina is on the decks from 7pm to late and there are prizes for the best dressed. Note, that does not mean sluttiest (necessarily).

A class Victoria crook and master manipulator.

The hotly-anticipated sequel to the 2011 blockbuster finally lands in cinemas in epic proportions. Hunk Chris Hemsworth is back and teaming up with his evil brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) to save his home and Earth from an even great power of evilness. Throw in his love interest Jane and it’s fun and fights all around.

With human fanatics now in open conflict with vampires and supernaturals, a plethora of threats arise for Sookie, Bill, Eric and their Bon Temps allies. Season six introduces several jarring storylines that threaten what little sense of normalcy remains in and around Bon Temps. Expect more sex, blood and carnage.

Michaela Strachan returns for a one-off Halloween special of the paranormal series Great British Ghosts. In this Halloween special, Michaela travels to Carnfield Hall to explore a house that dates back to the 15th century. Unexplained noises, thumps and doors shutting have been heard through the ages.

Set in Palestinian territories, a Canadian doctor’s sympathetic nature is challenged in a brutal and relentless way. Between checkpoints and stray bullets. Torn between the two sides of the conflict, wrapped up in the struggle, Chloé tries as best she can to build bridges.

It’s a typIcal day on the set of The Counselor – the European sun lights up the pool of a multi-million-euro villa in Spain. Director Ridley Scott sits behind the monitor as carefully positioned cameras capture every inch of the bikini clad partygoers. Enter the party’s host: Reiner, played by Javier Bardem. His honoured guest and the titular character, the Counselor, pulls up in a Bentley and before you know it, a live cheetah walks through the scene.

Wild cats, beautiful women, an acclaimed director behind the camera (whose notable work includes Blade Runner, Gladiator, and Black Hawk Down) and Pulitzer Prize-winner Cormac McCarthy in control of the pen – it’s moments like these that Javier realises what an “incredible” experience it has been working on the highly-anticipated flick.

“When you make a film, what matters are the people you are surrounded by,” he enthuses. “I was very lucky because Ridley creates a beautiful, relaxed but challenging atmosphere to work in. He works with a lot of the same people in his crew and you can feel that because it is very comfortable.

“There are many scenes in the movie where he uses that one take. And they are long scenes with just two actors. In that way it’s like theatre.”

Already familiar with Cormac McCarthy’s work – Javier won an Oscar for his role as hitman Anton in the Coen Brother’s adaptation of No Country for Old Men – the actor knew an original screenplay written by the acclaimed author would make for an outstanding piece of cinema.

“It’s the first original script that McCarthy has written and in the hands of Ridley, with this cast, of course you can’t say ‘no.’ It certainly didn’t take me too long to say ‘yes,’” he laughs.

The all-star cast he is referring to includes Cameron Diaz as Reiner’s sociopath fiancée, Michael Fassbender starring as the titular character, Brad Pitt swanning about as a womanising middleman and Javier’s real-life wife Penelope Cruz, who plays the love interest of the Counselor.

The contemporary thriller follows ruthless lawyer, known as the Counselor (Fassbender), as he is lured into the world of ruthless drug cartels with the promise of quick money. As he falls deeper into the

world of corruption, he finds the wrong moves take him further down the rabbit hole.

Approached for the role of Reiner, a charismatic entrepreneur with a dark side, Javier says he immediate had an image of the character in his mind upon reading the script – something that rarely happens for the Spanish actor. Inspired by what he “saw”, he accepted the role during filming of the James Bond movie Skyfall in London, in which he played the ruthless villain Raoul Silva.

“Reiner is the kind of guy who belongs to an alternative world in the movie,” Javier says of his character. “I think every character in the movie is in the middle of an accident. What happens to Reiner is like an accident and he’s the guy who doesn’t have to do too much with everything that is going on.”

Javier says he built his character’s attributes around Reiner’s often-used saying: “I don’t know” or “I don’t want to know” – particularly when it comes to his relationship with his out-of-control lover Malkina.

“It’s all based on a person who will always hide from the responsibilities of having the need to know and to know what to do. He doesn’t want that responsibility. I thought it was fun, for me at least, to play a person who is trying to detach himself from all responsibility in a world where you have a lot of responsibilities once you get involved in it.”

It’s a far remove from Javier’s real life, recently becoming a father for the second time earlier this year with his wife of three years, but he says working within the dark world of McCarthy is easy when the characters are so rich and unbelievably twisted.

“Cormac McCarthy’s work is beyond logic, it’s more poetry from the gut,” Javier says. “And you have to put your guts into it and maybe then you will understand many things that your logic won’t. It’s very dark humor, very McCarthy-esque. I think there are some great moments that are very dark but also very funny…that humor also helped me construct Reiner. He can make fun of almost anything, nothing is sacred for him.”

Love a good drop of vino? Craggy Range is the country’s specialist producer of single vineyard wines. The winery is family owned and a partnership between vigneron Steve Smith MW and the Peabody family, which began in 1997 with a shared vision, has seen world-class winemaking facilities built to create the perfect wine in their eyes – and the world’s.

Hidden upstairs by a gym, the central location boosts a 1930s theme and an intimate setting. This is a place for serious drinkers, with rich spirits made to be enjoyed on the rocks. It’s a nice place to bring friends, as you sink into the comfy armchairs and relax after a hard day at the office.

They are the specialist shop for discerning whisky drinkers and even new appreciators of a good brew. Browse their shelves of imported whisky: Single malt scotch, bourbon, and, of course, Irish whiskey. Sit with your friends in the comfort of one of their lounge areas and enjoy a few drams.
