MATERIALS TENDANCE FOR AUTOMOTIVE WEIGHT SAVING
3 TECHNICAL PATH TO REDUCE WEIGHT: part thickness (e) ↗ mechanical properties material density () material changing surface size (S) redesign parts, architecture changing
MATERIAL SOLUTIONS: 1 - HIGH and VERY HIGH STRENGTH COMPLEXE STEELS
Increasing of mechanical properties = thickness reduction = weight saving
2a - ALUMINUM ALLOYS:
STAMPED SHEET (BIW) CASTING (Cylinder Block, Chassis), FORGED (wheels)
2b - MAGNESIUM: Fundary
3 - Polymer Matrix COMPOSITES: - Glass, carbon and natural fiber reinforcers - Thermoplastic and thermoset plastics

2020 MATERIAL TREND
Use all the potential of steel technology
HIGH and VERY HIGH STRENGTH COMPLEXE STEELS
Weight saving potential :
material cost = reference = less than 1€/kg
~ 50/70 kg
Use more aluminium, specially on BIW
(powertrain is already in aluminium)
ALUMINUM ALLOYS
Weight saving potential :
Material cost increased + Investment impact
~ 150 kg
Study like alternative to aluminium and start to use
composites for structural parts
POLYMERS / COMPOSITES
Weight saving potential :
Material cost = x 2 to 10 /ref + Investment impact
~ 200 kg

CFRP is used predominantly in cars with an outspoken performance orientation
High-performance GTs and supercars
Substitution parts and after-sales market
Performance, as well as safety are primary goals of the applications
CFRP BIWs are currently used in cars with a price >> 200.000 €
Most applications of CFRP in structural parts in very low volumes (<<2,000/a)
Current production volumes limited by process technologies and costs
No supplier is geared to deliver for typical automotive series (>30,000/a)
Where do we stand today?
... and are there any new conclusions?
RENAULT Gérard LIRAUT – Guillaume GAZONNET 10 Octobre 2013 16
A little look down the timeline : Many projects showing high weight-reduction potential…
… but few have actually been transferred to large volume production
RENAULT Gérard LIRAUT – Guillaume GAZONNET 10 Octobre 2013 17
Except for Exterior Parts (bumpers, tailgates, fenders,…)

logiciels
