Synopsis 100 words:A six-hour interview with David Ben-Gurion, one ofmodern history’s greatest leaders, emerges fromthe obscurity of an archive where it has lainunrecognised for decades. It is 1968, and Ben-Gurion is 82 years old. He lives in the seclusion ofhis home in the desert, remote from all politicaldiscourse, which allows him a perspective on theZionist enterprise. His introspective soul-searchingis the focus of this film, and his reflections providea surprising vision for today’s crucial decisions andfor the future of Israel.
Based on archive material only, the film reveals the final yearsof Israel's founder, David Ben-Gurion. Excluded fromleadership, he allowed himselfa hindsight perspective on theZionist enterprise.

It is 1968. Ben-Gurion, Israel’s founder and first prime minister, is82. He lives in a secluded home inthe Negev desert, a symbol of hisdevotion to the settlement of thesouthern reaches of Israel, and theplace he will live out his days.
Nearly six decades after the filming ofthe interview, and now interlaced withnewsreel and other film archives, radiorecordings, and still-photographs, alldating from the events described, thefilm revisits Ben-Gurion’s opinions andhis prophecies.
FullSynopsis
The final ten years in the life of theleader, after he had declined futheroffice, and distanced himself from allleadership discourse, allowed him ahindsight perspective on the entireZionist enterprise.
From depths of an archive a stack of 35mm filmreels emerge. They contain six hours of a neverbefore seen interview with David Ben-Gurion, oneof the Zionist movement’s most iconic figures, andone of modern history’s great leaders.

Ben-Gurion was now able to express hisfrank opinions about all that was goingon around him, and to engage in trulyintrospective soul-searching. This wouldbecome the focus of the film.
Anticipating a future that would call forcritical decisions to ensure the survival ofIsrael, the film turns back in time, inorder to listen to Ben-Gurion’s lucidvoice and to seek answers for today andfor tomorrow.
DAVIDBEN-GURION
He sat for two hours a day, overthree consecutive days, and spoke inEnglish. He wore a turtlenecksweater, his casual uniform forcooler days. When the interviewersaid he was ready to wrap up thefinal session, Ben-Gurion protestedthat they still had 10 minutes to go.
But the reels of silent footage andthe soundtrack languished fordecades in separate archives.Excerpts from the recentlyrediscovered conversation form thecore of a new documentary, “Ben-Gurion, Epilogue,” in which theZionist luminary offers a raw, contemplative self-analysis of hislife’s work...
Interwoven with other footage fromthe period — of meetings withforeign leaders, a speech in Israel’sParliament, birthday celebrations —the film is, in part, a wistful ode to alost generation of leaders whoviewed simplicity as a virtue even asthey strove for giant goals.

It was April 1968, and “The OldMan,” as Ben-Gurion wasnicknamed for much of his life, had been largely abandoned byhis own political protégés. Paula, his rather brusque and devotedwife, had died that January, leaving him in near isolation in hischosen retirement home in SdeBoker, a remote communalvillage in the Negev desert.
“The most important thing whichI learned, I learned by living here,”he said. “I want to live in a placewhen I know that my friends, andmyself, we did it. Everything. It’sour creation.”

“There is an absence of leadership withthose values and that vision,” said YarivMozer, the Israeli writer, director andproducer of the movie, which premieredlast month at the Jerusalem Film Festival. The film, and the recent book by AviShilon on which it is based, Mr. Mozeradded, “reflect the interest of someyoung Israelis to turn back to our history,to our past, in order to find answers fortoday and maybe for the future.”

Yariv Mozer and Yael
Perlov uncovered the
lost interview almost
by chance, in the
Steven Spielberg
Jewish Film Archive in
Jerusalem. There,
while working to
restore an old feature
film about Ben-Gurion
by Perlov’s late father,
David Perlov, they
tripped across the
silent film reels. It took
six months to find the
soundtrack, which they
did in the Ben-Gurion
Archives in the Negev.

THE STORYBEHIND
Israeli Film Director, DavidPerlov (1933-2003), was thefirst and only filmmaker ever tohave made a film about Ben-
Gurion's life, but the film -
a fiction film - "42:6" (1970)
was forgotten andsubsequently vanished.
While working on thereconstruction of Perlov's film, together with his daughter,Yael Perlov, also a film-
maker and The HebrewUniversity's Spielberg Archive, Iwas surprised to unearth sixhours of rushes containing afilmed interview in English withBen-Gurion.
The interview was conductedas part of the pre-productionwork on Perlov's film. It was aunique interview with DavidBen-Gurion, in which he delvedinto many issues relating to theZionist enterprise.
The interview, which wasinitiated by the British producerof “42:6”, Melville Mark, hadnever been shown, and muchof its sound track appeared tobe missing.

Through this unique archive material we have uncovered, Iwanted to revisit the man upon whose vision and perceptionthe State of Israel was established and to represent his ideas.
In the midst of this present day period when several majordecisions impacting the future of Israel seem imminent, especially concerning the most fundamental of politicalsubjects and the Israel-Palestinian conflict, Ben-Gurion's visionoffers a clear cut, accurate and surprising point of view onthese core issues.
One cannot help but feel that if we were still under theleadership of a man as brave as he was, then reality wouldsurely look altogether different.
Director's Statement
The interviewer was Dr. ClintonBailey, a recent immigrant toIsrael, who had come to liveat Kibbutz Sde Boker in thefootsteps of Ben-Gurion.
The interview took placein April, 1968. Ben-Gurion was82. His wife had died only fourmonths earlier, but he continuedto live on his own, with hisbodyguards, in his desert home.
A long search led us to acclaimedBritish sound recordist, MalcolmStewart, who had kept theoriginal sound reels safe until heeventually donated them to theBen-Gurion University of theNegev and the Ben-GurionArchive, though he had noknowledge of where thematching picture reels of theinterview were.
We immediately began theprocess of matching the soundwith the image at the end ofwhich, for the first time, theunique and intimate interviewwith David Ben-Gurion wasrevealed.

The former prime minister had chosen theinterviewer, Clinton Bailey, who was then arecent immigrant from the United States. Mr.Bailey had been befriended by the Ben-Gurionsafter Paula invited him in for tea one day whenhe was wandering near their home in Tel Aviv.
Ben-Gurion helped Mr. Bailey secure a teachingjob at the academy he had established at SdeBoker, and Mr. Bailey would sometimes join theaging politician on his brisk walks around thekibbutz.
Mr. Bailey went on to become an eminent scholarof Bedouin culture — and mostly forgot aboutthe 1968 interview. Recalling the period, Mr.Bailey said the simplicity of the Ben-Gurions’ cabinat Sde Boker was “a statement,” adding: “ I don’tthink Ben-Gurion wanted the perks of power.”
For many years, in addition to his research andwritings on Bedouin life, Dr. Bailey haschampioned the cause of Bedouin rights in Israel. In 1994, he was awarded the prestigious EmilGrunzweig Human Rights Award, presentedannually by the Association for Civil Rights inIsrael.

David PerlovI N M E M O R Y O F ( 1 9 3 0 - 2 0 0 3 )
David Perlov was born in Rio de Janeiro andgrew up in Belo Horizonte.
In 1958, Perlov emigrated to Israel, settling withhis wife Mira on Kibbutz Bror Hayil. They latermoved to Tel-Aviv. In 1963, Perlov made a 33-minute documentary, "In Jerusalem", whichcame to be recognised as one of the mostimportant films in Israeli documentary cinema.
Although by 1972 Perlov had made two featurefilms ("The Pill" and "42:6"), his film proposalswere often rejected by the Israel BroadcastingAuthority and Israeli film board, which foundhis work too lyrical.
In early 1973, Perlov bought a 16 mm cameraand and began to film his everyday lifealongside the dramatic events taking placein Israel at the time. He continued for 10years until in 1983 the UK network, Channel 4,expressed an interest in the project. The resultwas Perlov's acclaimed work DIARY (Yoman).
From 1973 Perlov taught in the departmentof film and television at Tel AvivUniversity. In 1999, Perlov was awarded theIsrael Prize for his contribution to cinema.

Melville MarkI N M E M O R Y O F ( 1 9 2 1 - 1 9 9 7 )
Melville Mark, who has died aged 76, was oneof the unsung heroes of Israel's 1948 War ofIndependence. Born in Manchester, from hisearliest years he was associated with socialistZionist youth organizations.
Melville took part in post-war Jewishunderground movements in Europe, smugglingHolocaust survivors onto the ships that wouldcarry them to Palestine. He later joined the‘Haganah’ and fought in Israel’s battle ofliberation.
The end of the 48 war saw him enlisted inthe Mossad, using his six-foot height, ginger hair, and British passport in the noless dangerous role of secret agent inTurkey and elsewhere. The Mossadchapter has remained a closed book: hewould never discuss it.
He had established himself in Geneva as acorrespondent for United Press, and becameinvolved with film producers, setting up thefirst Montreux International Golden RoseTV Festival. In Israel in 1976 he established thefirst World Jewish Film and Television Festival.
In the late 1960s he produced "42:6" a filmbased on David Ben-Gurion's life story. Thecollaboration with Ben-Gurion in 1969consisted of filmed interviews, but Ben-Gurion was then pressured intowithdrawing from a joint publishingventure he and Melville had agreed.
In his seventies, Melville joined his architectson David in the Millenium Wheel Company, established to build the London Eye, however,he died in 1997, before its opening in 2000.
